Decided to get a facial at Derma 180 the day before starting a new job as a way to celebrate and…read moreease my nerves. I've had maybe 5-10 facials in the past and loved them so I was really excited for this experience. I arrived at my appointment and the owner, Marie, was very nice. But things went downhill from there. First of all, with all the facials I've had in the past, I've always been asked to remove my shirt and lower my bra straps if I was comfortable so that the aesthetician could work on my neck and decolletage as well as my face. Not at Derma 180. Marie asked me to lay on the bed fully clothed which I found odd. We proceeded to have a conversation about how I have sensitive skin and a compromised skin barrier which caused my cheeks and chin to be pink. I also mentioned that I had just exfoliated my skin a few days prior so with these two factors, I asked her to go light on the exfoliation. She proceeded to put an enzyme (read: exfoliant) on my face which burned at a level of 3/5 but which I could tolerate. She then proceeded with another chemical exfoliant on my face which burned so badly (5/5) that my eyes were watering and I couldn't handle it. She then wiped it off with a cotton pad and it felt like sandpaper on my face and hurt really bad. Instead of using a wet towel to wipe off any remaining residue, she proceeded to put a mask on my face which she said would soothe the pain. Problem is, there were still traces of the chemical exfoliant on my face since she didn't clean it off properly and it still slightly burned, even with the next mask on. Also strange, between the mask applications, she just sat behind me in a chair in silence. During other facials I've had, this is the time when the aesthetician would take the time to massage my scalp, neck, arms and legs. Not here. There was no steam, the smell of the products was not great and Marie had a bright light turned on which was shining in my face 70% of the time. Usually an aesthetician will only shine a bright light in your face during extractions and then turn it off so you can relax. My face was really red after the facial but this is somewhat normal for me as I have sensitive skin and it normally calms down after a few hours. I am now 7 hours post facial and the redness has worsened on my cheeks and chin and they have swollen and are warm to the touch as if I got a bad sunburn. This has never happened to me before and as I've previously stated, this is not my first facial. Needless to say, I will not be returning to Derma 180. Marie is nice, the music she played was relaxing and she didn't pressure me to buy her products, which I appreciated. Other than those 3 things, I would consider this experience to be a major fail. I now get to start my new job tomorrow looking like a red, puffy faced Santa Claus. Whoo. My advice to Marie would be to visit top spas, experience their facials, take notes and replicate those practices in your own business.
