The neighborhood has definitely quieted down since my childhood days--a time when kids roamed the streets and claimed the ends of culdisacs in numbers on their bikes or rollerblades, both after school and on the weekends. Now however, you won't see much of that. Today the neighborhood is predominantly made up of an older crowd. In fact I don't think I've seen anyone younger than the high school age in the area for some time now, and my parents recently mentioned that they couldn't remember the last time they had a trick-or-treater. So if you're looking to start and/or raise a young family, this probably isn't the ideal neighborhood for you. If you're looking for a quieter more grown scene however, then look no further! As far as the West side of the greater metro Phoenix area goes, the Arrowhead Lakes Estates are by far the best place to call home and everyone knows it. The development offers both lake view properties as well as golf course properties with gorgeous views of the nearby mountains and of course, the lake itself. My experience living here has been on the water, and I wouldn't have it any other way! Who wants to pick up golf balls from your netted yard everyday anyway? The only a downfall to a golf course property. Almost every lake front property has a boat dock to fish off of and accompanying boats to boast which makes sunsets and sunrises all the more beautiful. At Christmas time there is even a light parade open to all who have a boat to participate in. Such a great way to kick off the holiday season! The lake winds around the development--essentially connecting all properties, and even has beautiful waterfalls aligning its path at various stops for your viewing pleasure. All in all, this is a gorgeous place to live, or in my case, get to come home to when I need a break from life.

With nicely maintained roads running out of Cave Creek to the lake it's always a pleasant ride. There is a cafe there if you want to have lunch, which overlooks the lake as well. Every time I am there it makes me want to get a houseboat and ditch city life. One of these days maybe.

We decided to drive over to check out the nearby Horseshoe Dam in hopes to catch the spillway…read morerelease and the waterfall it creates into the Verde River and then head over to Bartlett Lake to see the start of the wildflower blooms. Totally worth seeing both when in the area. The drive was beautiful. Water levels are a bit low, but still amazing. The flowers are already in bloom, but will be even better by end of February into March if you'd love to see them. I love poppies but there are so many more flowers also in bloom, to see the best area I'd recommend the area just before Rattlesnake Cove . There is a small trail with roadside parking if lucky. Or can park in the cove parking and small hike back up to area. You do need to pay for a rec pass if parking and spending the day. You can purchase at stores nearby or roadside spots you'll see along the way. Traffic wasn't too bad today but as it warms up and flowers more in bloom be prepared. There is also a restaurant near the boat dock as well.

There's so much wildlife here, especially today. It was fun having our bird app to help identify the different bird calls. We also saw 3 families of ducks with babies. So cute. There were also bunnies, quail, pelicans, and even a coyote today. If you haven't been here, it's a must see.

A group of us women "of a certain age" had been trying to teach ourselves flyfishing for a year…read morewatching videos and reading books then trying out what we thought we knew. Many lost flies, cuss words and no fish later we decided to seek some help. Google gave us a number of options but we chose Cinda Howard and Flyfish Arizona and Beyond because she guides in the White Mountains of AZ where we love spending time outdoors. Boy did we make the right choice! Cinda is personable, patient, funny and more importantly, one of the top casting instructors in the U.S. We went to a private pond to learn and by the end of the day we were overhead, side and roll casting like we knew what we were doing. We caught six beautiful Rainbows, enjoyed the scenery, the lunch she provided and the company. She offered to take us to a nearby stream in the afternoon but we decided to stay at the pond and hone our skills. Looking forward to our booking our next trip to learn the streams on the Little Colorado or the Black River! There's only one place where the birds can access water at the lake. I see a lot of birds try to…read moredrink water but they can't due to the tall ledge. Little ramp or platform would really help these birds. They are also residents here and deserve access to water when they mostly drink car wash water from the streets.
