Quick diver experience context: At the time of my booking I had logged about 70 dives, mostly in CA. I had just dived in CA the same week that I booked my dives with Satoshi (owner of Reef Pirates). I learned about Reef Divers through another shop owner, Gabe from Kaimana Divers. He does charters on Reef Pirates' boat. Contacting Reef Pirates was very easy. Satoshi was responsive to phone calls and texts. He also let me leave my gear at the shop so I didn't have to take it with me overnight. This was super convenient. I love the small group dive experience. Their rule is to not have more than 6 divers (not including staff) on trips so it makes for a really intimate experience with the dive groups your a part of. Captain Dan was super chill but also walked through all necessary safety protocols. I appreciate the motto, "safety first, fun second" when diving so kudos to Captain Dan! If there is any challenge with the boat experience it's that as a well-hydrated diver, not having a head onboard means you have to schedule your pit stops accordingly. But they work around it quite effectively. Because I only dove with their divemaster the one day with limited interaction, he was very attentive and on top of me during set-up and our dives. I appreciated that because it speaks to safety as a priority. Diving with the group was a great experience. The best sites that I dived during my trip was with Reef Pirates. The team does a great job pointing out underwater animals and taking you to sites that will force you to use your skills and experience. I dove beneath a shipwreck with three white-tip reef sharks and in a beautiful cave with a large skylight while diving with Reef Pirates. Absolutely gorgeous. Additionally, I have never seen as many octopuses as when diving with this crew. They had a knack for finding them and even got one to wrap itself around my hand. There was one minor incident that is probably more personal preference than anything else. I had set up my tank and gear and realized that my tanks were not Nitrox (enriched air). This made sense as it was a last minute request so I had to go back into the shop and fill out paperwork for the Nitrox tanks. When I came back out my gear had been set up on my new Nitrox tanks which in it of itself made sense because we want to move quickly and get to the dive sites. But they had also removed my snorkel from my mask and tossed it on the deck of the boat while also removing the adapter that connects the snorkel to my mask and unthreaded my snorkel strap. A little context, people rarely dive in Hawaii with snorkels (they just use their regulators) but when I dive at home in CA it's standard practice. I totally understand why they removed the snorkel because when it comes to dive comfort, not having one gives you better trim. But it was a conscious decision that I made to be extra safe and the way the gear was disassembled created a minor inconvenience to reassemble that I would have preferred not having to deal with. Having said that, when I come back to Oahu I would definitely dive with Reef Pirates again. They run an excellent operation and take care of their divers. read more

Went back again for another scuba diving with them over Thanksgiving. Sean has been responsive in answering my queries as usual. Will was the same dive master as last time. He is friendly, funny, but pays attention to details when providing safety instructions. It was just 5 (+ Will) divers - I really love this max 6 diver setting so that getting in and out of water would not cause 'chaos.' I was very happy to see shark and frog fish on our first dive! Dive boat was great and Joey did a good job briefing us on what to expect on the dives. My only disappointment is that 4 of us were experienced divers and 2 brand new (only 6 dives) and we only had 1 DM so our dive times were only 25 min, which was a killer because I was looking forward to drift diving the Wall. My boyfriend and I had intended to do a dive so he was looking at ones with good reviews for beginner dives. He's certified and I'm not. We had originally went with another one but they weren't able to confirm, and I remembered seeing a YouTube video from Matt's travel tips and he had suggested reef pirate so we call right away! They had good reviews with beginners and limited to 6 people a boat so we were sold! I honestly gotta give them so much prop for making my first dive easy. We had James, Lauren, and Chris (captain) on our boat. They had scheduled 2 dive sites, no more than 40ft each for about 30 min. At first I was really, really nervous. I kept hyperventilating and I wasn't able to control my breathing and I kept feeling I was being weighted down! (we found out I WAS actually weighted down bc they had put 10lb extra in my vest without knowing, but it's all good). But Lauren took me under water and did breathing exercise with me and I was much calmer. You really have to fight your instinct to breathe through your nose or else it'll feel like you can't breathe. Anyways, the crew really took care of me and made me feel as comfortable as possible. From gearing up, to holding my hands under water, to finding cool sea life so we can have a good first experience, to always checking up on us with "", I'm so glad they were so patient with me. Def recommending to friends and if I'm in the area again, will def go back to them. Ps. They also provided transportation from our hotel and that just made it so much easier when you're on vacation without having to Uber or bus. read more

Stop right here! Don't click on another company. This was our most memorial excursion in Hawaii. I was very nervous to dive, but now I am hooked. I can't stand to even snorkel so I wasn't sure if I would like scuba diving. I chose Reef for the simple fact that they don't take more than 6 people out at a time. My husband and I don't like big crowds and I was willing to pay anything not to deal with them. I upgraded for a photographer since I wanted to concentrate on swimming and breathing underwater for the first time. The last thing I needed was a camera. WELL WORTH IT! There were only 3 of us on the dive that day. Crash was our guide and he was Awesome. He made me feel very comfortable and was easy to talk to. Our photographer Orval was super cool too. Since we were not PADI certified we did the 11am dive. Suited up in our wet suits and headed out to the boat to meet our caption Noah ( Hawaiian local, gave us great hiking spots) I was the first in the water and was nervous to let go of my regulator under water, but Crash was very calming and i was able to get through the scary part. Once we made it to the ocean floor I was super comfortable. We saw tons of sea turtles on the first dive, the second one was plants life, statues, fish and more. we even got a photo of us holding hands in front of a cool Buda statue. If you're looking for a professional run dive shop...you found it! Our boat Captain, Chris, is a solid leader. Very safety conscious, alert, and very competent. Good vibes on the boat and, lots of laughs!!! Dive Instructor Dray Wilson is "top shelf." This being my first boat dive, he took the time and exhibited patience to not only guide me on boat etiquette, but dive protocols. Dray is a complete professional that thinks "three steps" ahead. He is vigilant in the water and safety is his priority. He made both dives extremely fun and memorable. His added experience and insights into diving added to the experience!!! What makes a good diving operation is the people. At Reef Pirates you will not find a better crew than Captain Noah (go Crusaders!), Supergirl, and Diamond. They are incredibly knowledgeable of the surrounding waters and knew where all the flora and especially fauna were located. The charters are small (no more than 6) which enhances the trip. This is true concierge leveled diving where they transfer tanks and look after your every need. I don't have any video because I didn't check how full the SD card was. Thankfully Diamond took some photos and she posts it on the Instagram account titled scubaheroes. If you are looking for a dive company that cares about you you can't go wrong with Reef Pirates. Reef Pirate isn't your run of the mill big tourist company and that's what I like about them! I have dove with a lot of different companies on Oahu and this is one that stands out. They limit the number of divers to 6 total. Due to their location, they can go visit the corsair plane wreck which is a welcome change to the shipwrecks that are sunk for artificial reefs. They also tend to reach the Koko canyons (turtle canyons) before the other boats which, allowing you to see a lot more sea turtles. The boat is a bit smaller than what you would expect and you do a backroll entry for the dives. I do enjoy this smaller group feel, it is much less hectic than some of the other dive shops in Honolulu. Crash took me and my husband out for a dive and was absolutely a joy to dive with. He has a great energy and was quick to spot interesting fish for us to see. When my brother came to visit Oahu a few months later, he also had Crash as his guide! You won't regret booking with Reef Pirates for a smaller, less touristy feel. They seem to find the spots with the least number of people for a more enjoyable dive. read more

My brother and I did a two day dive package (4 dives) with Reef Pirates out of Honolulu and couldn't be happier with a fantastic trip. First day was two dives on Buddha and Turtle Canyon and second day was a deep dive to the Corsair Wreck (105ft) and then Angler's Reef. All the staff were super friendly - Satoshi who helped us over email and phone booking the trip, then Aaron (instructor) and Captain Noah on the first day and Elise (instructor) and Captain Chris on the second day. Great dive locations and very professional but chill vibe all round. The Corsair dive was probably the most fantastic dive I have ever had (Advanced Open Water diver with 8 years experience). It is a sight to behold. Will absolutely recommend them to anyone who is looking for a fun dive or something more technical. If I am back through Honolulu I will def book with them again. When I booked our scuba trip with Reef Pirates we were happy they had dives for uncertified divers! Crash conveniently picked us up from our hotel and took us to the location where we loaded onto the boat and headed out to the dive site where we ultimately saw the Green Sea Turtles!! What drew me to this group was that they have a maximum of 6 divers in each group. Our group was just 3 of us and it was nice to have the one on one attention from Crash and Noah! While my husband did great on the first dive, I couldn't quite get myself down but Crash was awesome and supportive and had me practice my breathing just off the side of the boat. Once we hooked to the second anchor we all dove down and Crash showed us the beautiful creatures of the Hawaiian Ocean! Thanks Crash and Noah for an experience we will never forget! read more

Went out with crash, Noah, and joe. Had a group of five. Three uncertified and two certified divers. The crew was charismatic, knowledgeable, passionate, and gave us a wonderful experience. We had one diver that got really nervous and they were so patient and helped her to be comfortable enough to complete the dive. This is a great place for scuba diving! It was my first time and I really enjoyed the whole process. We watched a safety video before we went out on the boat. Then they went over some more instructions and guidelines. Once we got to the destination, we got into our wet suits, got helped into our gear, and jumped in. We followed our instructor as she took us around to see the creatures of the sea. The coolest part was seeing the turtles! We found 2 napping on the floor and two swimming around with us. It was a really neat experience. The session lasted about 20-30 minutes before we resurfaced and headed back to shore. The workers here were very lively, friendly, and positive. This was my first time, but definitely not my last! read more

On day one we had divemaster Greg who had a funky personality and reminded me of a king triton character who made sure everyone was safe and knew where to find turtles , octopus, eels. These guys are absolutely AMAZING!!!Compare to the market their price is very reasonable and their service were the best! So I was instructed by coach Natasha, and she was really an excellent diving superstar! We had our day 1 confined water training for learning and practicing all the basic skills, then 2 more day open water shallow dive for practicing the skills we have learned during the first training. I do really enjoyed the time that I was spending at Reef Pirate Diving, I had little sea sick on the first day open water diving my coach Natasha and Captain Noah were taking care of me so well and I fell like being taking care as a family member. That really impressed me a lot...every time before we go down to the ocean, Captain Noah always ask : you feel ok?are you ready? Is your camera ok? He was such a kind hearted and nice guy! He checked our equipment carefully and sanitize everything for us before we use them, I feel so safe here since they are rinsing and sanitizing everything! Lauren was a really cool girl on our boat, she was very good at taking photos and she helped everyone on the boat. So I attended two more diving with them after I got my OW, one was deep wreck diving and the other day was shallow dive, both of the trips were FANTASTIC! AMAZING and FUN!!! The last day diving I met coach Charles, He was taking us all along and exploring countless beautiful marine animals for us. He was a funny guy made us laughing all the way! The boss of the dive shop helped me to figure my schedule out and arrange me on the trip which fitting my schedule the best, I feel so lucky that I found them on google and I joined their classes. My wife and I are first-time scuba divers. We signed up for an afternoon shallow reef diving session. Reef pirates diving is located behind a shopping plaza (tricky to find at the beginning). Once we arrived, there will be a training session to learn all the necessary skills and safety information for scuba diving. It's straightforward, so don't worry about it if you're also don't have diving experience. After that, all the diving equipment will be provided, so you just need to bring yourself (and motion medicine if needed). They also have Gopro rental, you can bring your own photography equipment. While we're driving the boat and heading to the diving site, more training will be given. There will be two dives in different locations. Our captains on that day were Satoshi, Steph, and Jonathan. They are incredibly professional, knowledgeable, and fun. You definitely feel safe and enjoyable as a 1st-time diver. We had a really great time, we see a whitetip reef shark, all kinds of fish, and much more stuff, but I forgot the names. :) read more
