Had Jess and Chris as our guides in May of 2021 for a two tank morning dive. Both were professional and fun to spend a morning with. No issues whatsoever with equipment, safety, or general accommodations. Didn't have to lift a finger with these two on board either. Dives themselves were great too as it was a small group and we were the only boat at the dive locations. Definitely one of the best dive companies I've had take me out and highly recommend if you're trying to dive in Oahu. read more

I didn't even get to go! I booked a trip for two shallow dives for my trip to Oahu, but I had to cancel due to a sinus infection. Unfortunately with the Thanksgiving holiday it was within 48 hours of my dive when I realized I definitely can't dive, and they refused to refund me. They offered to hold my spot for me in case I get better, and told me I could save the trip for another time or sell to someone else, but wouldn't refund me because I canceled literally a couple hours within the 48 hour window. This really surprised me as it was actually a safety issue not only for myself but whoever ended up as my dive buddy, and no good divemaster would even allow you to dive with sinus congestion or a cough. I couldn't believe they suggested that I still go! I can't recommend this place at all since safety obviously isn't a priority, and they seem to care more about the money than providing an enjoyable and safe dive for everyone. read more

We dove with Reef Pirates this morning and I can't recommend them enough. We were looking to dive the airplane crash and we called some other places that actually recommend that we go with Reef Pirates. We had a party of 4 go out and they never schedule more than 6 divers at a time so you know that you'll be taken care of. The crew was personable, and made sure everyone was comfortable and safe through the whole trip. The plane wreck was amazing and absolutely worth checking out. Joe our dive master even offered to take photos of us in front of the plane. Next time I come to Oahu I'll be going with these guys for my future dives. read more

Hands down one of the best experiences I've ever had. I've been skydiving, cliff jumping, paragliding, parasailing and this topped all of that. The crew, James, and both Joe's were awesome. I loved my experience with this dive shop. Unfortunately my first dive was canceled due to weather conditions but the staff was easy to work with and they simply moved me to another time slot. They make a point of communicating clearly and are very respectful of each and every guest. My girlfriend rode along with the option of snorkeling. The dive sites that we did unfortunately were not snorkel friend (as the first one was a deep dive with nothing to see from the surface and the other had very rough waters), but they gave her the choice on the second site. The Captain was friendly and she still had a good time just talking with him on the boat while we were diving. The diving itself was excellent. We got to do a wreck dive and then a very unique underwater cave dive as well. We saw a lot of sea life and had a lot of fun. I'd highly recommend this dive shop to any and all divers and hope to do another trip with them if o ever get back to O'ahu. read more

"Safety first, fun's second" isn't just a saying with these guys. It was clear they take safety seriously. Their pre dive brief was complete, touching on all the safety points as well as a full dive plan. They allow max of 6 divers which is really great. Most of my other diving experience is on larger boats with 12-20 divers. This is a way better experience. Frankly, I was worried the smaller boat might be an indication of their level of professionalism and diving expertise, but I couldn't have been more wrong. Our captain was Dave and dive leader was Joe, both class acts. They sneak out of the harbor a little earlier than the others, too, which is great for getting to the dive sites first and having calm waters. I will definitely dive with this outfit next time I am on the island. read more

I would give these guys 6 stars if I could. I got certified for diving here with Jake who was awesome in his teaching skills as well as his approach. I was extremely nervous being underwater but felt very confident with Jake. Their Scuba equipment is top of the line ScubaPro stuff and is always new. They clean all of their wet suits and equipment, so everything is very hygienic. Their approach is safety first, which I really appreciated especially being as nervous as I was. I went on 6 total dives with them out of which 4 of them were to learn the PADI recommended skill set and the last 2 were for fun. We had 3 people in our group and 1 of us wasn't able to get certified and had to quit mid way thru the 1st in pool exercises on day 1. The owner was very accommodating even though he did not have to be and arranged for the us to have snorkeling for 2 at no additional charge. We recently tried the Discover Scuba dive with Reef Pirates and it was a great experience. We loved the fact that they do not take more than 6 people at a time. Art and Crash were super friendly and focused on our safety throughout the dive. Crash was very patient and made sure we had a wonderful time. Safe dives but sexist I picked this company because of the reviews. On the plus side, dive master Art picked me up on time, they have great equipment, they only take out 6 divers at a time, everything was done with a "safety first,fun second" attitude that I really appreciate. On the other hand, as a gender non-conforming female who wants to be treated with respect, this trip was challenging. The captain, Dan, kept calling me "sweetie " and "dear". He didn't do that with the male divers. I found it really offensive. There were other examples of unconscious sexism as well that I won't bore you with. Bottom line - if you are bothered by sexism, pass on this company. Otherwise they are great. read more

Reef Pirates took me on my first dive ever today and I'm glad I chose them to introduce me to scuba diving. Jake was our guide for the dive. He has been diving for many years and is also a U.S. Army veteran. He and the rest of the employees are great people and instructors and really know what they're doing. Even though this was my first time diving, I was comfortable and knew I was in good hands. I would recommend Reef Pirates to anybody from a first time diver to a seasoned certified diver. read more

I had the pleasure of diving with Reef Pirates today and they were absolutely fantastic. The smaller group size is a huge plus, as you always have someone with you (like, under a meter away and watching you all the time), so there is no reason to be nervous if you're a first time diver like I was. They go through a step by step process for getting the basics down and show you a comprehensive video on things you're about to learn and use in the water. The boat captain was excellent and really on top of things, he was managing his boat really well, organising shoes and items so they weren't in the way, ensuring everyone's gear was sorted properly, really good. We saw lots of wildlife and some rare things like eagle rays, with the dive instructors pointing things out to us as well so we maximised our time in the water, which if you can keep your breathing as normal and relax, will see you get around an hour under the water across two different sites which we thought was a perfect amount of time. We elected to get the underwater photography package as well and it was worth it. You don't have to worry about your own photos or taking your gopro or worrying about that stuff you can just fall backwards into the water and enjoy. Lots of offers of snacks and water as well, Reef Pirates just have it all sorted. I wouldn't bother with anyone else and can't recommend them enough. read more

I was giving my honest experience and review I hope people would know about so they or you wouldnt have to go through what I did. I was stating the dvd is almost 3-4 hours long so I don't know how a class could be taught watching the dvd and doing a pool session in such a short time the first day (5 hours? ) when I noticed that most dive companies have longer class and pool sessions full day. On the phone the person claimed to be the owner and the conversation I had I hope he recorded or his workers were there listening as he claims because the truth will be known to who it really matters to. Contrary to the owner's non-specific reply about weather, sea conditions, and safety, the issue at the time appeared to be the fact that the wrecks I wanted to dive are off Honolulu and Reef Pirates' boat leaves from Hawaii Kai (too far away to make the trip economical for them). Their website now notes that they rarely dive these wrecks, but lacked that disclosure at the time. If they'd bothered to be honest about what they did and didn't generally dive, and why, it would have been a much different interaction...but apparently getting business booked was more important than being up front about what divers could expect or not. Obviously I don't hold them responsible for the conditions, including viz. But I do hold them responsible for how they conducted themselves: poorly and defensively. read more

We had Michael as our diving instructor and he was great. My dad and his girlfriend are experienced divers but this was my first time. Michael made me feel so safe and was wonderful at explaining everything. We went on two dives and were fortunate enough to see many turtles. Just got back from an amazing vacation in Oahu, and Reef Pirates Diving did more than their share in contributing to my positive experience. My lodging was in Waikiki, so I really appreciated the courtesy shuttle to and from Hawaii Kai offered by RPD. Michael our driver (and DM) was professional, informative, and communicative on the ride. He provided an overview of the dives we'd be doing that afternoon and patiently answered our questions, which made this novice diver feel even more confident when I hit the water. The training video is easy to watch and understand. The gear provided by RPD is in great condition. Once in the water, Michael was both thorough and patient in demonstrating the information from the video; he then had each diver individually demonstrate mastery in the water too. We saw moray eels, sea turtles and some cool statues on the ocean floor! After 2 dives, Captain Bud navigated the boat to shore, laughing and joking the whole ride back. Next day went in the morning. There was only one couple, me, and the dive master. Went deeper and saw some sharks by the landing craft. My husband and myself were very apprehensive of going scuba diving. We wanted to do something different this trip to the islands and agreed scuba was "get over our fears" excursion. We did the afternoon reef dive, and had a great time! The group was small, we were able to stay down a long time. The owner, boat driver, and master diver were friendly and knowledgeable. There were snacks in between dives, and everything was executed safely and efficiently. Equipment is in great shape and prices are competitive. We saw lots of turtles, beautiful reef fish, some sea slugs, etc. I'd definitely recommend them! read more

I chose this company after I read on their website that they only take groups of 6 or smaller. Since I am an inexperienced diver this was a major plus for me. I was picked up at my hotel (my one negative being that their van does not have their name on the side of it and I didn't see they were there until they'd been there 15 minutes). We went to a World War II plane crash that looked amazing (sadly my ears wouldn't equalize so I couldn't get down there). The diver returned me to the surface and I waited on the boat for the end of the dive. While I won't go into details, I can also they are very prepared for almost anything from sun screen (which I didn't need) to how to cure sea sickness (which sadly I did need). The second dive was more shallow and I had no problem - I couldn't have asked for a better spot. This time they sent down two instructors and let me in first so I could be working my way down with my troublesome ear without holding anyone up. Once we were all in it was amazing - sea turtles and eels and sunken statues and colorful fish - absolutely breath taking. everyone loves the photos I took on that dive. If I'm ever in Hawaii again this is who I would use to dive, hands down. read more

I had an awesome dive with RPD today. I was SO impressed by the customer service, the emphasis of safety, and the comfort! They do not cram their boat full like other companies, they have 6 or fewer divers each time. AWESOME! I stumbled upon RPD through a local recommendation and I am SO glad I did! The staff was so much fun, so helpful, and again emphasized safety (which is incredibly important when diving!). They were WONDERFUL to say the least and got some awesome photos of us in action-- we saw whales, sea turtles, rays, and SO much more. I can't wait to dive with them again in the future! I had a great experience with Reef Pirates on 11/27. I booked the morning dive for me and a buddy as well as a full charter for the afternoon. Bud was very helpful over the phone as far as answering questions about experience requirements and dive site flexibility and all the other little things I wanted to know. It was seamless to book. The day of the dive, they picked us up at a hotel in Waikiki and drove us to the dive shop/marina. It wasn't the best day for diving, but they were very professional in now they handled it. The first disappointment came when we decided not to head out to a wreck because of the choppy waters. The decision was made to stay more in the protection of the bay where the water was a little better. We did our dive and began heading to the second dive site. After we got there, as one of the dive instructors was searching for the mooring ball, it was decided that the visibility was too low for a good dive, so our second dive was called off. I was disappointed, but appreciated that they didn't sacrifice the safety of us or the crew just for a dive. We headed back to the marina and Bud explained that they'll refund us 50% of the price. Luckily our afternoon dive was more of a success. The conditions had improved dramatically. Me and my buddy from the morning joined our novice friends on their first ever scuba dives! We did 2 reef dives in the afternoon and our friends loved it. Overall I'd rate the dives a meh. I may be a little spoiled as I've only dove large tropical reefs, but I think the conditions affected what we saw (or didn't see) down under. It had been windy for a week leading up to our dives and I think the high currents drove some of the fish away. This was, admittedly, something Bud predicted when I booked it. We saw a bunch of turtles, octopus, and a few eels, but overall the quality of the coral was disappointing and there wasn't a ton of wildlife. We actually went snorkeling the following day and saw much more, but again I think it was due to the conditions. I'd definitely dive there again, hopefully on a better day. I still want my wreck dive! read more

This is by far the best place to scuba in town. They will pick you up RIGHT from your house/hotel and take you to the place as well as a ride back. The instructor is giving you full attention all the time! With groups only up to 6 the instructor will give you his/her full attention. I personally got Jake as an instructor and 5 stars. For my experience, at first I was scared but the instructor showed everything I need. Pre course lesson that provides everything you need and how to use it. If you wear glasses bring your own contacts to put under the mask. I felt very safe because we all go down as a group. If you need something, you bet they will listen and fix the problem. You will be accounted for. There is a place next to it that does not pu attention to your needs. Overall, I would choose Reef Pirates over any other scuba place. With or without experience, this place is just right. read more

Three of us finished our open water certification (owc) with RP. Very friendly group of guys. Once we finished the two day course we got to see the good stuff! Sea Cave, Corsair, and eternity beach were a great way to end the few days of diving. This was my first diving experience and it was perfect. The crew was knowledgeable, friendly, and comforting. Initially I signed up for one of the 3 day dive packages Reef Pirates offers and had an awesome time. So awesome in fact that I ended up purchasing an additional 3 day dive package as well as 2 additional single day dives! Sean has a vast knowledge of the hottest dive locations (both beach/boat dive locations) on Oahu as well as all the amazing and abundant sea life.
