I'm writing this review late. I went to Red's about a year ago, and I was not impressed. Not only were they out of some items, but the food wasn't very good or tasty. I've now been to Belize eight or nine times and tried many different types of Belizean food, and they definitely missed the mark on everything. The service was okay; there was only one attendant when I went, and since the restaurant isn't very spacious, the atmosphere felt more like a pick-up-and-go place rather than a sit-down restaurant. That might have changed over the year, but at that time, it hadn't. The stewed chicken was very disappointing, and the rice and beans were also tasteless. Maybe they were having a bad day, so you might want to give them a second chance. read more

Redz replaced Tickies some years back and we are sooo sad. You only get one dry plantain on a small and a large dinner and pay extremely high prices. Their food is pretty good, most of the time, but the chicken can be dry at times. I hope they find Tickie or her recipes and implement them at Redz bacause we love to support small businesses and absolutely love Belizean food- and please add a plantain or 2 for the large dinners. read more

So delicious and authentic. I love that they have the smaller size dinners. They're perfect for a lighter appetite or lunch. They also have salbutes, which is rare. The thing I get most often though is the panades. They're like very thin. Very small empanadas. Yum! read more

I've been patronizing redz since it was called Tickie's. This establishment has fallen by the wayside. When you call to place an order, they never have anything ready. "Can I order an oxtail malcolm?" "Sorry, oxtails won't be ready for another three hours". "Can I have a dukunno?" "Sorry, it takes two hours to boil". I mean they literally have nothing ready when you attempt to place an order. Only thing that is ready is their dry-ass chicken; like chewing cardboard. I do enjoy their potato salad and when they have them, pork tamales. More than half the items on the menu they don't have which makes no sense whatsoever. read more

Today was my first time at Redz! I went with my son's father and we both got the small chicken dinner. We wanted to try the oxtails but that wasn't available at the time, which was fine. The man at the counter was super nice & got us in & out. We waited about 5mins for our order to be done and since we were on the move we took our food to go. The portion sizes are great and everything was SO good!! The food was fresh, the chicken was juicy & falling off the bone, the rice reminded me of arroz con gondulez AND my absolute favorite part was the plátano maduro (sweet plantain) & potato salad! I'm Puerto Rican, so I love a good plátano maduro & potato salad lmao. I'm super picky with my potato salad but man, best potato salad I've had in YEARS! OH! They also gave us this hot sauce, which was different from anything I've ever had- It was really good and had a nice spicy kick to it, but was also like a vinaigrette? Idk but it was good lol. The restaurant itself is a little small and there aren't too many tables to sit and eat BUT I'm sure if there were, this place would be fckn PACKED cause the food is so good! They also accept cash, card, zelle & cashapp- which is super cool to me and just shows they're keeping up with what works for people. For the small chicken dinner & 2 cans of pop, it totaled out to about $41- BEST MONEY IVE SPENT ON FOOD IN A LONG TIME! And I swear I'd do it again lol, definitely worth it. We came to get take out. I called earlier in the morning to make sure they were still open. They answered and the guy that answered the phone wasn't very welcoming. After I had called the second time to put my order in, they disconnected their phone. Not a smart move in my opinion. How are customers going to know they are open? They might assume that you're closed... Anyways they were only serving chicken and beef and no oxtail. Good thing for me, I don't care for oxtail, but I know it's a favorite. I ordered a large beef dinner and a large chicken dinner. For the beef dinner, we ordered it with rice and beans, and it came with potato salad and fried plantains. The rice and beans were good, but there was a lot of hard pieces. They definitely had potential. The beef lacked flavor and was too dry. The chicken dinner, I ordered this with stewed beans. It came with white rice and stewed beans on the side. The chicken tasted better than the beef, but still lacked that authentic Belizean flavor that I've tried before. The rice and beans were tasty, but also lacked some flavor. The fried plantains were good and the potato salad was ok, but was too moist, potatoes were mushy and not whole. Overall, the food was ok. It was very filling but I was disappointed in the lack of Belizean flavor that I've once tried at another Belizean joint in the city. Sadly there can only be room for one Belizean restaurant on my list and don't believe I'd be returning. read more

As far as I know, there's only 2 Belizean places in the city of Chicago (at least according to a quick search on Yelp). One of them is this one, which is far north over by Howard, and the other one is Garifuna Flava on the Suoth Side. I'm a fan of both of them, although I love Garifuna Flava more. This one's good though, although the food took a little long to come out, and they were out of some things like oxtail when I stopped by around 12pm on a Saturday. I ended up getting the hash fish breakfast, which came with fry bread, beans, and maybe something else that I'm forgetting. Fry bread is a big piece of freshly made bread (I know it's fresh because it's the reason my order took so long) with a hint of sweetness, and is just a fun thing to eat. The hash fish was good, although the portions could've been bigger. I also got a conch fritter on the side, which really yummy, and tasted like the conch fritter I'd had at Garifuna Flava. I'll definitely be back if I'm in the mood for Belizean and am closer to here than Garifuna Flava. One last comment - I was looking at Redz's website, and they said they greet everyone with a smile. That's pretty false - the man who took my order and the ones after me looked pretty apathetic. Service isn't a huge factor in my Yelp reviews, as I care more about food, so the four stars for Redz is really food and vibe, but their service isn't always the warmest depending on who you get. Redz Belizean Restaurant is small Restaurant located in Roger Park Chicago area. There isn't anything fancy about this place . There are about 3 tables that sit 4 if you decide to dine in. The menu is limited. They may or may not have what's listed on the menu. The customer service wasn't friendly and workers looked serious at all times. I didn't notice not one smile. The food tasted average. It's not anything to brag about. I didn't enjoy this suppose to be Belize Caribbean authentic food. I hope it taste better in the actual country. read more

Redz is a hole-in-the-wall off the Howard stop serving up homemade Belizean dishes. The menus are located at the front counter where you order and then grab a table. I was unfamiliar with Belizean dishes, but figured they would be similar to Mexican dishes. One of my fellow dining partners called it a mix of Mexican and Jamaican food and i thought that definition was very fitting. I ordered a side order of empanadas or "Panadas" which came with 4 very fried fish-filled empanadas. I also ordered a side of rice and beans which was just rice with some beans mixed in it, rather than rice and refried beans as I expected. My fellow diners ordered a side of 2 tostados "garnache", and plantains. The plantains were delicious, but the rest of the food was just alright. Lastly, the overall atmosphere of this place was not ideal. The tables were dirty and after ordering I stepped in avocado mush which made me upset. Additionally, the large TV taking up the front wall shows the menu occasionally, but most of the time I was there it showed videos of girls twerking in bikinis, not something I really want to eat lunch to. read more

You MUST come here, if you live within a 50-mile radius. If you love Central American flavors... plantains, stewed oxtail, seasoned rice & beans this place will knock your socks off. Or for those who've never tried Belizean food before, brace yourselves because you might fall in love. I just did. Came here for lunch, and I ordered the Oxtail dinner (that's right, haha) which comes with a generous helping of stewed oxtail, rice and beans, potato salad and a fried plantain ($8.00). The meat was tender and melted right off the bone, the sauce was amazing like it has been stewing for days... All the flavors were a punch and a kick. If I were any closer, I'd order carry out more often. It's a very small establishment, tucked behind the Howard station on Paulina, between an empty storefront and... I think a beauty supply store. I would have missed this place completely, if the staff at the Howard Area Community Center (across the street) didn't recommend it. I don't frequent this area often but now I would come back for another round. (And I'd also try to find that woman who walks around and sells home-made tamales!) Redz has chicken/fish dishes and breakfast plates (the breakfast plate came with some sliced avocado) and the food here is FAB. I don't know how people can make oxtail so good. There is seating (a bunch of booths on both sides of the restaurant) and it's a pretty small/simple dining area. After I finished eating, my plate was scraped clean: yum. This place is a true Belizean spot because they take 50-11 years to take your order and cook your food but on the upside, at least you know it's fresh! Even when I place my order via phone ahead of time and I come 30 minutes later it's still not ready (in their defense, they do warn you on the phone that it'll be "at least thirty minutes). As a Puerto Rican, I know that drill so it doesn't bother me plus don't really care but if you're in a rush go somewhere else cause they don't rush lol. It's worth the wait though. I've had the coconut stew snapper, peas and rice, rice and peas, plantain, potato salad, conch fritters, caramel cake. Everything was delicious, full of flavor, enough to feed two adults. I live a few blocks away and I've been there several times. Buy the bottle of pepper sauce to take home. I put that shit on everything. We've been meaning to check out Belizean food here for a long time, especially since we live in the area and when we finally got a chance, it turned out that the place changed owners and was remodeled. Overall the experience was not bad, but I hope the new owner continues to make improvements. The good part: - The food itself is really great. Very authentic Caribbean cuisine, as good as anything we've tried in Jamaica. Plantain, rice with beans, ox tail, all very good. The portions are generous for the price. Lots of good different sides to add at cheap prices (corn bread was excellent) - Caribbean/Reggae music playing in the background. A nice touch, nothing better on a chilly rainy/snowy Chicago February night. - People that work here are friendly. The less good part: - They must be on Island Time. Or short-staffed. It took a long time for someone to appear at the register and take our order. It also took a long time for the food to come. - It was not really clean. The place is very small and there was not a clean spot for us. The owner came out and was nice enough to wipe down a booth for us (without us complaining, so he understands, which is great), but we still needed to kind of wipe our table. The neighborhood is a bit rough here, so partially I understand, and maybe it's just better to get take-out from here, but still... I've been very happy with the food I've had in Redz. I've tried the oxtail and the chicken dinner and both were great. The oxtail was tender and the chicken was very flavorful. The dinners come with rice and stewed beans and rice tastes amazing. This is just plain white rice but somehow it tastes much better than the white rice I make at home! I also had the pork tamale and it actually has a large chunk of pork inside! For drinks, the place makes its own eggnog! It tasted creamy and delicious. read more

I love this place. Food is always fantastic. I made the 1 hr commute when it was Tickie's and I still make it for Redz. My favorite dish is the Tilapia stewed in coconut milk, but it takes 30 min so I usually call it in ahead. My only complaint is the service. Don't ever go during a typical rush hour for dining or carry out because the staff of easily overwhelmed. You might have to remind them to bring out your order/drink/or even silverware. Many a time I had to take it upon myself to grab my own drink or walk in the back for some silverware. I actually got a job near by and was excited to be able to pick up carry out for lunch. I called in my order 1 hr ahead and told them I would be on lunch break so it was important to be ready on time. When I showed up there was a line to the door &they hadn't even begun preparing my food. I had to wait 45 min and was late returning back to work. I should've just left but they kept saying almost ready. Learned my lesson &only go now when I'm not crunched for time. I keep coming back because I love the food & its a great price. I would love to see them move to a bigger location & hire more staff. I would love to host a party there. I bring any friends who have never tried it before but with the limited seating it makes it difficult. Great place but try to go at an odd time to have a better chance at good service. read more

My husband and I were in the northern end of Chicago during a weekday evening. We were starving but it was 4 in the afternoon, so our choices were limited. I found Redz Belizean on Yelp, read through a few of the reviews, decided that it sounded good, and we walked the few blocks over from our B&B. Our arrival into the restaurant was a little chaotic. There were quite a few people milling around the front counter. We stood around a bit until a man (a waiter, I suppose) leaning against the counter came over, asked if we wanted a table, moved some things off the closest table, wiped it down, and motioned for us to take a seat. Just as we sat down, a woman who had been sitting on a stool at the front counter rushed over and told us that we were sitting in her seat. The waiter had disappeared at this point, so we had to get up and wait for somebody else to leave (there are only 4 booths) so we could sit down. The ordering experience was a little chaotic too. We wanted to try the conch fritter, but were told that they were out. We ended up ordering the panades appetizer, the small oxtail dinner, and the small chicken dinner, which came with rice and beans, potato salad, and fried plantains. The waiter brought out this incredible onion-y, garlic-y sauce for the panades. The oxtail and chicken dinners were perfectly sized, and the gravy over the rice and beans was delicious. The plantains were the absolute best part, though. Fried and caramelized and kind of gooey in the perfect way. I would recommend: streamlining the ordering process at Redz, adding additional seating, and improving customer services. The food was great, though. If I'm ever back in the area, I'll probably get take-out over dine-in, for sure. read more
