Large chicken dinner w/ stewed beans
    Jose C.

We came to get take out. I called earlier in the morning to make sure they were still open. They answered and the guy that answered the phone wasn't very welcoming. After I had called the second time to put my order in, they disconnected their phone. Not a smart move in my opinion. How are customers going to know they are open? They might assume that you're closed... Anyways they were only serving chicken and beef and no oxtail. Good thing for me, I don't care for oxtail, but I know it's a favorite. I ordered a large beef dinner and a large chicken dinner. For the beef dinner, we ordered it with rice and beans, and it came with potato salad and fried plantains. The rice and beans were good, but there was a lot of hard pieces. They definitely had potential. The beef lacked flavor and was too dry. The chicken dinner, I ordered this with stewed beans. It came with white rice and stewed beans on the side. The chicken tasted better than the beef, but still lacked that authentic Belizean flavor that I've tried before. The rice and beans were tasty, but also lacked some flavor. The fried plantains were good and the potato salad was ok, but was too moist, potatoes were mushy and not whole. Overall, the food was ok. It was very filling but I was disappointed in the lack of Belizean flavor that I've once tried at another Belizean joint in the city. Sadly there can only be room for one Belizean restaurant on my list and don't believe I'd be returning.

As far as I know, there's only 2 Belizean places in the city of Chicago (at least according to a quick search on Yelp). One of them is this one, which is far north over by Howard, and the other one is Garifuna Flava on the Suoth Side. I'm a fan of both of them, although I love Garifuna Flava more. This one's good though, although the food took a little long to come out, and they were out of some things like oxtail when I stopped by around 12pm on a Saturday. I ended up getting the hash fish breakfast, which came with fry bread, beans, and maybe something else that I'm forgetting. Fry bread is a big piece of freshly made bread (I know it's fresh because it's the reason my order took so long) with a hint of sweetness, and is just a fun thing to eat. The hash fish was good, although the portions could've been bigger. I also got a conch fritter on the side, which really yummy, and tasted like the conch fritter I'd had at Garifuna Flava. I'll definitely be back if I'm in the mood for Belizean and am closer to here than Garifuna Flava. One last comment - I was looking at Redz's website, and they said they greet everyone with a smile. That's pretty false - the man who took my order and the ones after me looked pretty apathetic. Service isn't a huge factor in my Yelp reviews, as I care more about food, so the four stars for Redz is really food and vibe, but their service isn't always the warmest depending on who you get. A different man who rung me up was friendlier, and even made small talk with another customer about how old her baby was.

Redz Belizean Restaurant is small Restaurant located in Roger Park Chicago area. There isn't anything fancy about this place . There are about 3 tables that sit 4 if you decide to dine in. The menu is limited. They may or may not have what's listed on the menu. The customer service wasn't friendly and workers looked serious at all times. I didn't notice not one smile. The food tasted average. It's not anything to brag about. I didn't enjoy this suppose to be Belize Caribbean authentic food. I hope it taste better in the actual country.

I grabbed the 2 meat, 3 side special which included: stewed chicken, jerk chicken, rice and peas, cabbage and plantains. There's a solid amount of food and I'm going to be eating on this over the next two days. There's rice and peas were incredibly flavorful, moist and had a hint of spice. The stewed chicken's skin was falling off! That's how tender it was and I love anything with bell peppers and onions. The cabbage was solid with great crunch. Sometimes it can get too mushy, but this didn't. The plantains were just right!! Great palate cleanser as I transitioned to the jerk chicken! And the jerk chicken was a hit!!! Good amount of spice and flavor! And juicy! I also had extra jerk sauce on the side. Hmmmm I honestly enjoyed both chickens and would say if you're unsure of which to get, just get both... you'll definitely order from here again lol I ordered through uber eats and naturally was PRAYING that my order was correct and it was. A nice hefty serving and of course I also have a slice of the caramel cake. Mannn this slice of cake is so dang delicious. The two miles that I run tomorrow for this will be so worth it! I had never been to the brick-and-mortar location until now. I stopped in one Sunday afternoon to a restaurant that was not busy on the inside. I noticed there was a steady stream of individuals coming in for carryout. Nevertheless, I had a sit-down so that I could try a few items. I ordered the Belizean appetizer sampler. This came as panades, garnaches, and conch fritters. I liked the panades, which were corn patties stuffed with buffalo fish. They were nice and flavorful. The garnaches reminded me of Venezuelan tostadas. I think that what was a miss for this dish was the drizzle of ketchup. Since I stopped using condiments from grocery stores, the flavor of such tends to ruin dishes for me. I liked the conch fritters. I would order those by the bagful just to have for snacks. My main dish was the stew chicken with rice and beans and a side of plantains. Surprisingly, this was more like baked chicken. There was no hint of cumin, cloves, or garlic. There were no tomatoes. There wasn't a sauce or a gravy. There was flavor, of which I give them that, but the same stew that I've had in Belize and in my Belizean friends' home was not served here. It very well may be that the dish prepared here simply differs from that which I have had before. It wasn't a bad thing. Not everyone prepares every dish the same way.

I'm a Chicago native, but I live in LA, where I'm lucky to be surrounded by many delicious Jamaican food spots. But Jerky Jerk has the best jerk chicken I've ever had. When I say that the smoky, slightly sweet, tender, fall-of-the-bone experience hit the spot, I mean that it HIT THE SPOT! Even the rice & peas and cabbage were cooked and spiced to perfection. All three of us devoured our plates in about ten minutes. I also love the colorful and lively Chicago sports murals that fill each wall, as well as the hospitable and vibrant service from the owners. He was friendly, attentive, and even offered complimentary drinks and shots to my friends, while I was largely ignored. Things escalated when the check came. After I paid, my receipt was held up in a way that drew attention to the fact that I hadn't left a tip on the card. And, then he mocked me and said, "I'm sorry my service was that bad to the point, I didn't get a tip." Shortly after, my friends continued receiving drinks on the house--again excluding me out.
