Super divey bar that turns into an absolutely happening karaoke bar! Came here last year while hopping around Chinatown and enjoyed a quick and very strong drink. It was just our group and we sat at the bar, got quick service and then headed out. On our most recent visit, we stopped in right as karaoke was about to start, and what was supposed to be a quick drink on a bar crawl, turned into hours here singing our hearts out. The crowd was amazing, everyone was super into karaoke and took turns singing and getting into eachothers performances, it was such a blast! Chill ass bar in Chinatown. It apparently has been here a long time and looks like it certainly has. Red's Place is one of the cheapest places to get cocktails around here surely. Even though it's not as cheap as it was it's not bad. This seems laid back compared to the commotion that goes on outside. Apparently it's Chinatown's oldest bar. It's been around here since 1937 and looking at it you can believe it. This is certainly a bar for the neighborhood. Has that classic dive bar interior. Lots of wood. Clientele seems to be mostly Chinese, as expected. There's lots of local beers, mostly in bottles in the refrigerator. It's about $8 for a basic cocktail. They can make fancier ones like martinis. Has a lot of history. It's one of the oldest bars around, and has that family owned feel to it. There's no food, but people often bring in something. read more

If you come to Chinatown for a drink, there are several choices, but to me, the focus always seems to stay on Buddha Lounge (review: https://yelp.to/FWFpZOyKcy) and Li Po Cocktail Lounge (review: https://yelp.to/ga8MGK8BIK) since they both have prime locations on Grant Avenue and serve their own signature Chinese Mai Tais. This one happens to be Chinatown's oldest bar, so you'd think I would've been here before. However, despite passing by it dozens of times, nope, I had not been here until I decided to drop by on a random Thursday afternoon. Pretty quiet in here. First things first, there was nothing inside that would make you think you're in Chinatown except the greasy container of chicken chow mein a regular customer was eating at the bar. It was definitely the kind of place that attracts regulars regularly. No tourist magnet for sure, and that was a major plus. No Chinese Mai Tai either, but I'm not a huge fan of them anyway. The regulars not so much as they just talked just to each other despite Amy's best efforts to engage everyone. Well, Norm and Cliff weren't that friendly to everyone either. Such a fun place! My friends and I were walking around the area and came across Red's Place. It's a small karaoke bar with the nicest staff and adorable Christmas decorations. It has classic bar drinks at a reasonable price. There is no karaoke book, and you can sing literally anything. My friends and I went up and sang so many times (sorry to everyone who had to listen to us!). A few other groups were doing the same thing and everyone was having a great time together. It has always been great and this most recent time (last weekend) was the best ever. Both bartenders were super fun, friendly, cool, easy to talk to, and generous with the pours. Time to give Red's Place an updated review since my last visit. As with tradition, I had to bring out of towners to this place as they are a lovely dive bar in Chinatown! The place welcomes new and old people with open arms. They have remodeled the place too with extra outdoor seating as overflow. This place survived the pandemic and came out stronger than ever. It seems that the old regulars continue to visit and support the establishment. It was Jerry that took over the place after Bob's untimely death back in circa 2011. He reached out to me to let me know there would be a re-grand opening after I wrote the review. No longer a cash-only institution, they take credit cards now! Also the drink prices continue to be extremely reasonable which make this place a keeper in my book. read more

A funky, unpretentious dive bar with a great vibe in the heart of Chinatown. I had just finished dinner with a friend and needed to kill an hour before a comedy show at the Great Star Theater. I saw there were a few bars in the area, and decided to check out Lion's Den first. Much trendier, packed, and the back room was closed off for a private event. So went to Red's and glad I did. The place is classic neighborhood dive bar, but immediately the welcoming vibe hits you. There were a group of friends chatting and eating to the front left, the bar was pretty full, and there is another space with some tables in the back left. The bartender immediately welcomed me and asked what I wanted - I went with a bourbon. And a man at the bar said "the moment this man walked in, I knew he was a whisky man!" I basically just chilled by myself, but groups were talking with each other, the bartender was chatting with everyone, and even with the eclectic mix of people (ages and ethnicities), the vibe was great the entire time. Reading the reviews, I did check out the cavernous bathroom. As people have stated, it feels more carved into the bedrock than it does an official latrine, but it works. Plus I got BTiLC vibes. All in all, would definitely come back if I was in this part of the Chinatown. read more

A small little sports bar tucked away in the side streets of Chinatown. Walking in you will hear the familiar sounds of sports, dice cups, and Cantonese curse words. Happy hour daily from 3 to 8pm. I didn't expect a little bar like this to have 4 free taps of different beers. Honestly, most of the 4 stars from this review all goes to the bartender Ashley. Although it was only 6pm on a Saturday, she tries her best to chat with everyone and make everyone feel like they're at home! What also helps is that she's super cute! While wandering around Chinatown, we found ourselves in this bar. This is a spot that you'll probably find locals with a divey bar feel. The drinks were decent at about $10 each. The bar is small, but they do have a stocked bar. The biggest plus was the music playlist though. Also, if you find yourself using the restroom here --be warned now for a very interesting experience downstairs to say the least. Such a cool bar(oldest bar in Chinatown) tucked away on the corner of the street. It's nothing fancy, no crazy drinks, no ridiculous prices. It's a good old fashioned hole in the wall bar with a bunch of tvs and a bathroom that's like a dungeon. OGs were playing liars dice, customers just chatting with each other watching the game. We were waiting for a table at Z and Y and Keith said just check out this dumpling spot up the road since your wait is so long House of Xian. Red's is the perfect dive bar whether you are a SF local or you are visiting for a few hours. As the oldest bar in Chinatown, it is full of rich history and long time patrons that give this place a unique vibe. Jerry, the owner, greets just about everyone who enters the bar and seems to have a personal connection with most of his patrons. His hospitable attitude is shared by many of the regulars, making everyone feel welcome from the second they sit down. Red's is a cozy little spot, with only a few tables and stools, but there is a fair amount of standing room to consume your drink if all the seats are full. They have a standard bar selection and also feature some Chinese beers and liquors. A unique part of this bar that we learned during our time there is that regulars can purchase full bottles of liquor, and consume them at their own pace. Mediocre is the first thing that comes to mind. Beer on draught is normally priced for the city ($8-9) and the selection is average. Use of plastic cups was off putting on multiple levels, this isn't Saint Paddy's Day. Decor is underwhelming and staff aren't particularly friendly. Maintenance is required as some of the seat cushions are really torn. Interior could benefit from cordoning off and hiding storage. Outdoor area is somewhat redeeming and appreciate the touch of the Chinese lantern. read more

Be forewarned, this is a dive bar. In fact, it is a dive bar in Chinatown. That said, it's not so much that it's a Chinatown dive bar (like Li Po). It's really just a dive bar to get beer and cocktails, watch some sports and chill in an unpretentious spot. Here's why it gets 4-starts: $3 Bottle Beer from 4-8pm, every day. That might not sound like much, but some of those beers (as of March 2016) are Sculpin, 10 Barrel, Lagunitas, Anchor Steam, Sierra - all of which are a primo deal at $3. They do have a few drafts, including Denogginizer. I wouldn't anticipate fancy cocktails, but the bartenders are fun so they'll make fun drinks for your group. Bartenders are another step towards 4-stars. And, other than Li Po, the Chinatown Bar scene isn't particularly strong. This is a better option than Mr. Bing's, I say better than Buddha Lounge but I think that could be perfectly debatable based on taste. Counter-Argument: If you aren't a dive bar person, I wouldn't seek it out. It can have cool people, it can also have the 20-somethings who believe every word spoken by their crew is the FUNNIEST, THING, EVER. The ceilings are low, and the bar isn't that big, and the television views aren't perfect. And, the bathrooms are downstairs and while I don't have to touch much while in a bathroom, if I did I don't know I would want to. So, don't necessarily bookmark this place. But if you're passing by from 4-8pm, like good beer, and like a deal - you could do a lot worse. read more

You can order drinks like a value meal! With Li Po seemingly busier now after being featured on Anthony Bourdain's "No Reservations", Red's Place is a pretty good alternative to turn to in Chinatown. Why? Well, not only do they offer cheap drinks and a friendly bartender, but you can also order a shot and beer just as fast as ordering at McDonald's: - Combo A: shot of Jim Bean and a PBR for $7 - Combo B: shot of Jameson and a Budweiser for $7 - Combo C: shot of Sho Chiku Bai Sake and a Tsingtao for $7 - Comdo D: shot of Maker's Mark and a Lagunitas for $9 - Combo E: shot of Bullitt and a Lagunitas IPA for $9 Now I just wonder what would happen if you asked them to "Super Size It". **Side note: After going downstairs and ducking/dodging the low hanging pipes to get to their cramped, dirty little bathroom, I could only hope and pray an earthquake wouldn't hit until I was done. It's not often that I find a SF haunt no one I know has reviewed... but it's not often I find myself in the bowels of Chinatown and come out smelling like a rose. I've been spending time in San Francisco since [redacted] and only recently have I begun to enjoy it the way my friends who live there do. Place's like Red's is why. Red's isn't my typical kind of place. It's a little dingy. It's a little dirty. It's a little (a lot?) divey. It's not my kind of spot... but I really liked it. 1.) The folks who work here and the folks who frequent it, keep it real. I know that phrase is almost all the way played out but there's not an ounce of pretension on either side of the bar. SF startup money? Nowhere to be found. Dumba$$es taking selfies and pouting with duck lips? Not here. Smart-a$$ed bartenders who have no time for foolishness? Check. Strung out regulars barely able to sit upright? Check. Anthropological glee from yours truly? Check. 2.) I drank a Little Buddha beer. The taste wasn't much to speak of (think any green bottle beer from your college years) and I don't think it's authentic at all (Australia rather than Asia) but it's kitschy and tacky and I will love it and pet it and call it George. Plus, you know I had to drink beer out of a bottle at a place like this. My lips don't touch pint glasses at dive bars. It's a rule. 3.) It's a real bar. There's nothing else to it. There's no theme. There's no scene. There are no screaming woo hoo girls or frat boys making noise. There's no crazy markup on the suds. It's just a place to get a drink, either with friends or by yourself, and enjoy a beer or two. It's crazy to think that such a concept is groundbreaking but these days... it sort of is.
