Jamie W and I had thought we had exhausted all the options in our various Bay Area tiki bar adventures. So color me embarrassed that we had never ventured to this old-school tiki bar. We were on our way to Chinatown from the waterfront, and some remote part of my subconscious had me look on Google Maps and find it. It was about 6:30PM on a cold Saturday, and the bar was nearly empty. That made us happy. Sammi was the bartender, and we appreciated her industriousness. When more people came in, she never faltered in coming back to us. Very professional. Jamie ordered the $15 Painkiller, an ideal mix of rums, pineapple, coconut, and orange juice with a shake of nutmeg (photo: https://yelp.to/5kRkAWDm1s). Nice kick from two different rums. I saw the slushie machine in motion, so I went for the $13 Strawberry Slushie (photo: https://yelp.to/ePFcen57dJ). It was nicely blended but a tad too bland for a starter cocktail. The second round worked more in my favor. Jamie had the $15 Pretty Fly for a Mai Tai (photo: https://yelp.to/HmN6i-WBWL). Amazing what a couple of aged rums can do together with orgeat and curaçao. Served on the rocks, it had more of a kick than I was expecting. I think I ordered the drink of the evening, the $15 Surfin' Monkey (photo: https://yelp.to/z22tOccF5z). It was a smooth, milkshake-like blend of pineapple and spiced rums, creme de banane, coconut, pineapple, and fresh banana. The place started to fill but not obnoxiously so. At least not yet. The darkly lit decor was not quite at Trader Vic's level, but it had the right spirit. This one is definitely going into our tiki bar universe rotation along with Tiki Sam's and Zombie Village. A civilized alternative to the strip clubs on Broadway. COCKTAILS - 4.5 stars...pretty solid renditions of tiki bar favorites AMBIANCE - 4 stars...old-school vibe SERVICE - 5 stars...Sammi does her job really well TOTAL - 5 stars...classic old-school tiki executed well RELATED - Looking for tiki bars? Walked in around 1am on a Friday and was pretty lively. There is a DJ in the corner playing trendy tunes with a small floor space for dancing. There's a couple booths and a bunch of seating at the bar tops. I received quick service; there were 2 bartenders and got my drink within a couple of minutes after ordering. The drink I got was super refreshing and tropical! The only con was the booths were left unattended to. There were empty cups and dishes from the previous table that were left around. Overall love the tiki vibes, great for a drinks and fun time!

When I first moved to SF in 2016, my cousin who had already been living here took me out to his favorite watering holes. Bamboo Hut was the first one! Did everybody know his name? Absolutely! Were they always glad he came? Definitely! Is it a place to take a break from all your worries? Resounding YES My homage to Cheers... You're welcome. Now, Bamboo Hut is a small bar located in the North Beach area of SF. Nestled among pizza places and strip clubs! It's known mainly as a Tiki/Tropical themed bar and usually has a DJ mixing absolutely dope beats! Famous for their enormous tropical thirst quenchers like the Pretty Fly for a Mai Tai, Tropic Thunder, and the ultimate... Bamboo Hut Volcano Bowl! It is massive, pricey, but one of those and your liver is set for the night. The place is also available for private parties and they'll even hold a booth, or a whole section for you and your peeps! Drink prices are reasonable and in all the times I've ben there I've never had to do a double take on my bill! Plus, TIP the staff, they work hard to keep us happy! Just the "quick" tip... GO THERE. Get some drinks, have some fun, let loose, and make sure you either eat BEFORE or AFTER. Also use a RIDESHARE if your tiki is tipsy!

Stopped by on a Friday night, and really enjoyed the atmosphere at Bamboo Hut... the colors, lighting, and decor were festive and inviting. Everyone we interacted with was awesome, from the guy checking our ID's at the door to the bartenders serving our drinks, they were all so friendly and seemed to be very approachable. I loved the strawberry kiwi cooler, which came in a cute pineapple-shaped glass with a little umbrella on top. The drink itself was yummy, exactly what I would expect at a tiki bar, and a great way to end an awesome night. We stayed until closing time (which was 1am), and the employees didn't rush us out or make us feel uncomfortable in having to finish up and leave. Cool spot :)

Bamboo hut is a fun experience it's like walking into an episode of SpongeBob in the best way. The decorations were a vibe (especially the puffer fish). My friends and I got the slushy fish bowls and had a blast drinking from the bendy straws and watching the volcano eruption the bartender creates.

Came here around 10pm on Saturday night. It was a very cool vibe! The decor was so vibrant and the DJ was really good. His set was really fun that I wish the place had a dance area. There are lots of seating areas and standing tables. This place is great for groups wanting a chill vibe. We got the regular volcano bowl and chose to mix the strawberry daiquiri and pina colada. It was $45 for the regular and $60 for the large. The presentation was so fun with the fire and cinnamon sparks. The drink was really tasty. My group of 4 wished we got the large. I also tried the bars take on an espresso martini but I forgot the name they had called it. It was really good! Strong and creamy.

Came in on a Saturday around 6 with my friend and we were the only ones at the bar with only one bartender. They have daily happy hour which was $3 off cocktails. The inside was very cute and had tiki bar vibes. I had the sex on the peach and my friend had the beach please. We both enjoyed our drinks which were $12 each with the HH discount. Surprised it was empty on a Saturday but I'm sure it can get crowded later in the night.

I had so much fun a bamboo hut on Friday night! It's a tiki themed bar with lively music and drinks. It was pretty crowded and lively but luckily there wasn't a line to get in, and we were able to get drinks pretty fast. The spot had a great energy, and a bar that I definitely want to check out again!

Ask the Community - Bamboo Hut

Do I need to make a reservation to come here with a group of 20 people?

Reservations are never required for the Bamboo Hut. It is more of a “bar” vibe where people tend to stand and mingle. There is a reservation request form via our web site. We’re always happy to save space for larger groups whenever possible.

Would I be able to bring my friends that are 20 (under 21) with me to celebrate my 21st birthday?? Or does everyone have to be 21 to enter?

I’m sorry but everyone has to be 21. Let’s do next year!!

What kind of music does Bamboo Hut play?

Hi, We play a mix of just about everything, pop, throwbacks, hip hop, dance classics, anthems etc. . Upbeat and fun all night. Each dj bring their own style to the mix but…

Website says they are closed for repairs..are they open?

Re-Opened last night! Place looks great

I'd heard the back bar opens after 7, but when I was there the doors magically parted at 5:30 so my hubs and I relocated to a private hut for a cozier final round. 2) Delicious drinks -- the menu offers a nice selection of tiki standards, new takes on old classics and some Pagan Idol originals. Each drink is built from fresh, house-made ingredients and all potent yet balanced on the palate. Many are rum-based but not all so there's some variety if rum isn't your thing. 3) Expert bartenders -- the fella who made my drinks knew his stuff and answered questions about the menu patiently without an ounce of attitude. When I decided I wanto venture off-menu for my second order, he whipped up a daiquiri variation that he intuited would fit my tastes based on preferences I shared (and nailed it). Will definitely come here for my next tiki fix.

There's not a cover charge to enter, but if you sit at a table and "dine in", a $20 per person entertainment fee is added to the final check. I was really annoyed by this, especially because I didn't order anything since I thought we were bar hopping. In the end, the math didn't make any sense. I calculated percentages on the final receipt to determine what I owed the person who paid the check. The gratuity (15%) only applied to the food and cocktails my friends purchased, but tax was added to the entertainment fee ($100 for my group of 5) and just the food but not alcohol. In the end, I paid my friend $22 for the space I took up at our table. Music was extremely loud and not very good when I first entered but improved slightly when the live band performed on the boat. Overall, this place was not the vibe. It felt touristy, not surprising since it's located in a hotel. I can see how it could appeal to certain audiences, but still, I find it absurd to charge guests just to sit at a table with their friends. If the venue wants to recover the costs of providing the live entertainment, then they should set expectations up front by either charging cover at the door or making tickets available to purchase in advance because essentially, I could've entered separately from my friends, ordered a drink at the bar, and not paid cover, but what's the fun in that.

I feel that I cannot pass judgment on the Mocking Bird as a beverage since I asked for such an altering modification to the drink itself, but it was just not good without the lime. It tasted too strongly like actual alcohol. I get why they would make a rule about having one drink per patron here for the sake of their business, but I'm personally not sure if it's worth it considering even their mocktails are upwards of $15 with tax and tip. The trivia itself is very fun. There's x amount of rounds and each round is 4 questions, and you can pick whether you want certain questions to be worth 7 points or 3 points if you're certain of the answer. This pushed our team up from 9th place to 8th place! If you also are just not sure of the answer at all, the funniest answer gets a free round of shots. The night we went, the option was milk punch. I would say that it's a cute place to take people visiting from out of town or once in a while, there's also much more seating within the location than at certain other trivia bars.
