I'm a newer runner and I've been trusting local, dedicated running shoe stores for several years to choose the right shoes. I've never loved the shoes they helped me choose. The last pair was just not right, caused ITBS. Before that, they were too big....lost mobility. The first pair from the running store wasn't right at all. I'm not dissing the fancy stores. They're helping lots of normal, selective, and advanced runners. It turns out that I don't run in the same gait as I walk. The fancy shoe store tech just didn't work. For the prices, I'm expecting a near podiatrist (which is unreasonable, I know) This year, I must have tried on 10 shoes at the fancy store and REI. None of them delighted... my size was not in stock and I even ordered some in. So I went to Rogan's. I literally picked every running shoe in my size and lined them up. Hoka, Brooks, ASICS, Saucony, even Nike, Adidas.... Every single one. SELF SERVICE IS AWESOME!!! I tried high and low drop. Support and neutral. Wide and narrow toe boxes. Every config...every combo. I ran around the store like a fool. Staff was awesome, tolerant, and helpful but not necessarily knowledgeable. In the end, I found TWO shoes that were unexpected configurations that were AMBROSIA to run in and one was 50% off. Now I have both well padded trainer and a weightless race day shoe. My running distance doubled... I can't stop. My feet don't hurt and the ITBS is at bay. EAST HAS BIGGER RUNNING DHOE SELECTIONS. There's a huge selection of normal shoes. Huge selection of work shoes. Lots of good deals. Friendly service, albeit not really shoe pedagogs.

They also have the "good stuff" that other stores won't carry. Check the clearance rack for some nice clothing to wear otherwise - discontinued items can end up there.
