Love this place! Always a good crowd to dance and drinks are decently priced for what you're getting. I've never had a bad experience with the bartenders or security guards! They're always attentive and always make sure the patrons are safe. Any of the bad reviews I've seen on yelp sound like people who think their shit doesn't stink and that they should get special treatment simply because they exist. I went to Red Square for the first time in my entire Vermont life on Friday February 14th because a couple of girlfriends and I had dinner near there. I had high expectations since everyone told me this place was the best in Burlington. You should get there after midnight because it didn't start getting crowded until 12:30 am. It's a good late night place for dancing to trendy music. They have coat check where you can stack coats for $3 and cover is $5 so relatively inexpensive. My only gripe is I wish they had free cover before a certain time for girls. I'd be more motivated to go then. I'm going to divide this review into categories and rate them individually from 1-5 depending on what you want to do there. Dancing: 4 The music was trendy and there were good house beats that's very danceable. The people on the floor were energetic. I didn't like that there were multiple small spaces to dance because they were too small for me. I'd rather see one big dance floor, but that's my only gripe. The people are pretty touchy and if you're looking for a hookup, you definitely can find one. Drinking: 4 The bars are efficient. We hardly had to wait to get the bartender's attention and get our drinks. I tried my friend's cranberry vodka. I know typical college drink, but it was good. Usually they're too heavy on the vodka, but this was perfect for me. Had about 50/50. There are lots of places to sit so definitely a good place to sit down and drink too although it's more for dancing. Ahhhhh Red Square. I've been coming to Red Square for as long as I've been visiting Vermont and it just keeps getting better. I'm used to the party scene in Atlanta and NYC but I really appreciate the low key feel of my fave Burlington haunt. THe drinks are pretty decent and I can't recall ever having to pay $3 to get in. Dropped in for a pint and some music. The live music was a great thing to have. Added great atmosphere. The beer selection included a lot of Vermont beers on their 18 taps. Bottled beer is mostly the main stream fare. Nice place to stop in for a drink and some tunes. Check it out. read more

On an early Friday morning (November 3rd 2017) at approximately 12:51 AM, I was making my way through the club and bumped into a woman. She started saying I was touching her, and tried to explain not I wasn't. Before I could walk away, her friend -- a female member of the staff that with dirty blonde hair -- walked over to me, and said if I keep this up I am going to be thrown out of the club (she refused to give me her name). I said I am not doing anything and was trying to walk away. Suddenly a bouncer walked over to me and escorted me outside of the club. If this bar wants to treat its customers this terribly fine, I will not be giving it my business. First, we are in a crowded club and call me crazy, but you are going to bump into people. Second, I don't like being threatened because a defensive woman knows someone that works at the club. I would recommend people reconsider going to this bar until Red Square learns to treat people with an iota of respect, and not with such a knee-jerk reaction to the smallest thing. 12/7/2018 Red Square is the number 1 night club if you ask me in downtown Burlington. I have been going there for the last five years and as they say first impression is not the best or the last impression. But that said I fell in love with Red Square the moment I took my first step inside those double doors. I lovingly call Red Square my first love. Literally swept off my feet and it is still doing the same every time I walk in there. You have not one not two but three bars, the front bar, the back bar and the blue room whereby friendly faces await to offer you the best bar services. You have got live bands and Djs entertaining you and keep your feet tapping and letting stress leave your body and soul. The servers and the busters making rounds checking you are taken good care of. The security staffs making sure that you are safe and sound. And overlooking all the hustle and the bustle is one gem of a manager who makes this business an experience to really treasure. If you are in Burlington, Red Square is a must place to go to and just enjoy the good drink and good people who makes this business up and running. read more

Honestly let me start with sh*t and orange because that is what this place smelled like. For some reason the management has completely ignored the perfect storm of nasty. There are bathrooms with lines right next to the DJ on the dance floor where the not so classy clientele blew up the bathroom one after another while the bartenders and DJ spray natural orange air freshener to try and cover it up. This place is absolutely horrible. I tried three separate draught beers and they all had a sour taste. I was told by the bartender they were unaware if the lines have ever been cleaned or serviced!! The staff is beyond rude... I witnessed two incidents in my hour and a half of being there where the staff were not only unprofessional, but incompetent as well. After seeing a group of three aggressive male bouncers bully and borderline grope an overly intoxicated non combative female I had to leave. I came here to dance on a Saturday night: Too crowded. It was uncomfortable. There's no room to dance. Everyone bumps into you. A fight broke out while I was there. Music was ok. They played a mix of 90s and r&b and house music. I don't think I found one song that I really enjoyed. It was all just okay. I also found that there were too many creepers. This place is having an identity crisis...hipster? casual? divey? salsa dancing? My friends and I came here on a Saturday night because everyone said this is "THE place to go." I'm not quite sure what we were missing, but the place was awful. There were three types of music going on at once...and you could hear them all clashing with one another. There was some local band in one room, salsa dancing in another, and elevator type music in the third. The place was trying to cater to all crowds, but unsuccessfully. The place was so dark, which, I believe, was done so you couldn't see the filth on which you were standing. And to add insult to injury, there was a cover charge. read more

It was so old school and not really in synch with modern dancing styles so this was rather dissappointing. I did a weekend trip to VT with a couple people a couple weeks ago. Through word of mouth, we heard this was the place to go on Church St. I'm very happy we decided on this place. First of all, it was packed; the good kind of packed though! Secondly, the DJs (I'm pretty sure there were two) were pumping out the jams and finally, I never had a problem getting a drink. No wheelchair ramp...yet, but very apologetic and extremely helpful. Nathaniel was a DOLL! He picked my wheelchair up over the step, showed me where to go, waited to help me back down, and was incredibly sweet. Friendly and great to strike up a conversation with. Give that man a raise! The waitress was amazing as well, friendly and does a great job taking care of the customers. They even brought my service dog a bowl of water...how awesome is that? Now, the drinks. Umm, yes please. I asked for a filthy vodka martini, and they delivered...full to the brim! I asked for a silver tequila shot...so, damn, smooth. Good stuff, who needs the salt and lime?! And they didn't hold back. No tiny shot given here... So the price of the drinks? You're getting your money's worth! They had a fun, playful band on a Wednesday night and all customers had a great time dancing, singing, and making new friends. Red Square is a very relaxed, down to earth and comfortable night club. I always feel safe when I go out there because there are security at every corner that break up problems before they even start. You can bring your own food to enjoy with drinks. You don't need to be a VIP to have a comfy seat. You don't have to buy water it's available at every bar and you can get it yourself. There are always two DJ's playing simultaneously at night. One is hip-hop and the other is EDM. The crowd usually picks up between 11 and 12 depending on the night. There is always dancing and fun to be had here. The staff are interesting and unique and there is a group of regulars that keep things lively. Another great aspect of Red Square is that you can check your coat for a couple dollars. The drinks might be a little more expensive than other places on Church Street but they feature a variety of local craft beers and liquors. In the summer local bands perform on the stage outside and there is ample seating on Church Street and the alleyway. The staff goes the extra mile to make sure everyone is happy and safe. read more

I heard about Red Square when I was in town on a business trip. Previously, I had been to a few other places in downtown Burlington, but they were pretty bland. On one particular weekend night, a very nice cocktail server at Chili's and I began talking, and when she heard I was from out of town she actually ended up inviting me to go out to Red Square with her friends later that night! I met up with her at Red Square and was immediately enamored by the all red mood lighting. The first bar is just inside the entrance ($10 cover), which is a very narrow bottleneck of people getting in, out, or just passing by. Past that is a mini-dancefloor with another bar, but it is really awkward because it is also a major thoroughfare. So there are constantly people walking by while the others are pseudo-dancing around them. Finally, when you get to the back, there is a full dancefloor in what seems like a shack that was added onto the back of the building. The DJ is up on a 1.5-story podium, and they mostly spin electronic music (on weekends anyway). I had a decent time there, but it tended to get rowdy and sloppy. It is definitely a college spot, since U of V is so closeby, so the drunk kids were out in full force. I almost got into a fight because this wasted dude was trying to move through the crowd but was colliding and leaning on everybody. He ended up putting the full weight of his body on me, and when I shoved him off, he tried to make a move but luckily his friends stopped him. There are quite a few spots to check out in downtown Burlington, but I thought that this one was pretty cool. It's quite unique, venue-wise and music-wise, so I have actually been back a couple times after that. According to yelp, Red Square falls into the categories of "bars" and "dance clubs." While it's true that Red Square has a couple of bars inside, I certainly wouldn't call it a dance club. I'll save you the trip to Red Square by giving you a play-by-play of how your night will go: If it's a weeknight, don't go. No one else does because it's that bad, so why should you? This isn't the kind of place that you would want as your local watering hole. On the other hand, if it's a weekend, go for it. You'll be greeted at the door by one of the biggest jabronis you've ever met. If you're a female, expect to be treated like a piece of meat as they compliment you in the most misogynistic way possible. If you're a male, the self-proclaimed "security" at the door will size you up like you're an out-of-towner in one of those old western saloons where the music stops when you walk in. Then they take your money. $5 cover. Not an unreasonable cover charge for a place that purports to offer a good time. Hopefully that money just goes to the live band. Speaking of the live band, I have nothing but good things to say. The bands that I've seen in the few times that I've been here have been talented and professional. Too bad talent and professionalism don't rub off on the establishment itself. For example, when ordering a drink, you might seek a bartender with some talent. Well you won't find it here. And I'm not talking about Tom Cruise in cocktail. All I can say is, if you want anything other than a bottled beer, steer clear. On a good night they might be able to pull off a vodka soda, but then again even a blind squirrel finds a nut from time to time. In regards to professionalism, have you ever seen a charge on your credit card that doesn't match the receipt that you signed? Look no further than Red Square! That's right! And try going back and taking it up with the fine gentleman who calls himself the manager. He'll promptly tell you to go F yourself! Professionalism at its finest, keep it up Red Square! Ok, now let's remember, this isn't just a bar, it's also a dance club. It's actually my favorite kind of dance club (cue the sarcasm). The dance floor seamlessly blends in with the people flanking the bar. In other words, there's no real dance floor or area. When you finally wiggle your way to a space where you can get a little bit loose, something goes wrong... your foot gets stuck to the floor! I know, I know, every club on the planet has the occasional spilled drink. But at least other places clean up at the end of the night! I'm not sure what kind of standard this place holds itself too for cleanliness, but it's got to be somewhere between wet hot garbage and steaming pile of sewage (see "manager" and "professionalism" above). The grotesque floor is, in a lot of ways, a metaphor for the bouncers or "security" as they call themselves. The security (bouncers) at Red Square are absolute low-lifes. I don't doubt that their inability to perform a useful job function stems from the managers superb leadership skills, but sometimes it takes a little bit of moral compass to rise above the overall negative culture and these guys just don't have it. Remember, these were the thick-headed lugs that treated you like dirt when you walked in the door. If only you could turn back now. Since you're here, sit back and observe as they look longingly at the women and vindictively at the men. Now watch them go to work. Three of them will "break-up" a conversation between two friends because somehow laughter was confused for aggression. Not to be outdone, four others will drag out a guy who was dancing because "he's had too much." And God forbid if you'd like to leave on your own accord. As security clogs the exits and you offer a simple, "excuse me," you'll be lucky to get out the door without the police getting involved. It's the 21st century and VT is a progressive state. Unfortunately, Red Square attempts to turn back the clock on progress or at least stand in its way. You can do better, Burlington. And I am hopeful that some day you will. I wanted to give this place 5 stars, but I just couldn't bring myself to do it in light of everything I've seen. So 1 star it is. Good luck everybody. read more
