There's no other small music venue I have been too that has the same ambience and vibe as Light Club. They wrangle in some pretty great artists both local and touring (seen loads of friends here as well as Sean Watkins of Nickelcreek and Tom Brosseau plus found a host of new favorites). Food is from next door at Duino and it's fantastic. Beer list is pretty good (all bottles and cans) and the drink menu is inventive and delicious. They just recently opened up and raise the two front tables by the window which I am still indifferent about. I thought it was cool before because people could "take in" the music but still have a quiet conversation without being rude to the performers. Need to check out another show there before making that call. I love this room whether its packed or it's just me, the performer and the bartender (which sadly has happened before). Burlington just needs to get out and see more music and this is the place to do it.

So let me begin by saying that I went to the art show/local performance this past Thursday and had…read morea GREAT time. Both performers were really good, and the vibe was nice. The beer on tap was decent as well. However, when I went THE NEXT NIGHT (Friday/yesterday) I showed up with my friend and got carded by a teeny bopper security guard named Kevin. He took my ID inside to "further examine", and came back with his minion Steve in tow saying I had to leave because it was a fake and if I didn't like it then call the police. OBVIOUSLY MY ID LOOKS DIFFERENT BECAUSE I AM FROM MISSISSIPPI. So I understand the hesitation - However, BURLINGTON IS A SANCTUARY CITY. YOURE GOING TO IDS FROM PLACES WAAYYYY FARTHER AND THAT HAVE BEEN THROUGH WAY MORE THAN MINE. As migrants, we should not be subjected to the humiliation of standing in front of the club with police in full garb because you don't know how to look at IDs from places other than Vermont. At any rate, I digress. I proceeded to call the non emergency line for the police to validate my very real ID. They validated it via phone, so the bouncers handed my ID back but said I still wasn't welcome to come inside. I asked the police to come in person. While waiting for his arrival 7 different people passed with nothing more than a fist bump. The police finally arrived, and said that he was "too busy" to run my ID and even if it's valid they didn't have to let me in. After visiting a more worthy bar, my friend and I attempted to go back to Metronome to give it another try. This time, Xavier very rudely told us, "You already tried earlier. Leave." I spoke with Officer Ross who was standing in front of Metronome while on patrol. He agreed to call in and validate my ID. Once he did, he walked in and told Kevin, Steve, and Xavier that it is indeed real. I WAS STILL DENIED ENTRY. The police reiterated that they cannot force them to let me in. At this point, it was no longer about entry (the place has 25 people on a good night). It was ALL about the principle. I felt that this act was discriminatory, so I asked for the reasons my ID was singled out. The bouncers mumbled half responses about the fact that it was issued in 2015 and had a peeling layer. KEEP IN MIND: IT'S AN ID THAT EXPIRES EVERY FOUR YEARS. IF IT WAS ISSUED IN AUGUST OF 2015, IT WOULD EXPIRE IN AUGUST OF 2019. A four year old ID will not look brand new. In the end, the Sargent from the PD came. He was extremely respectful and heard my point. Ultimately, I don't really care that I couldn't enter this sorry excuse for a club. The real issue is that I didn't want anyone else who moved to Vermont seeking asylum from WHATEVER to be subjected to the same treatment. It's unacceptable. Ultimately, if you're going to scrutinize that hard then you should have UV lights and scanners or other unbiased methods to check identification. Having some bouncer who isn't even old enough to drink judging IDs off of his (lack of) worldly knowledge is not going to cut it in 2019 or beyond. Most people would say, "I'm never going back." But I'm saying quite the contrary. I'm showing up every single week with the same ID until it expires. If you'd like to play that game every Friday Metronome, we can. If not, I look forward to enjoying my time with the rest of the Vermonters, and especially the migrants. Think twice before acting on bias the next time.

This is a pretty typical grungy-in-a-good-way Burlington bar. Its full of college kids and there's a pool table. The simple act of keeping a creep out of a bar is more than 90% of bars in America, but I am thankful the staff and in particular the bouncer cares about peoples safety. They are tolerant, but when someone's behavior is egregious and obviously dangerous or disruptive they intervene quickly and respectfully. The OP's regulars are some of the most charming and compassionate people you will find in Burlington. The bar is often full of artists, musicians, and people you will get along with if you're the creative type. The drinks are cheap, the staff is caring and most importantly this bar cares about people first. If you want to go somewhere where being a predator is chill, go somewhere else. Many bars in the area pour especially strong or especially weak drinks that are not consistent, and that can make it hard to keep track of how much you're drinking. At Orlando's, the strength of my mixed drinks remains the same each time. The bartenders are professional, knowledgeable, and swift. 2. Their cocktail offerings are fun! They do some unique offerings with fun seasonal stuff that really gets you in the spirit of the season. Some other reviews mention that they don't have an extensive wine list-- it's not really that type of place. It's sort of like a classy pub, not a high end hotel bar. Expect to find cool cocktails and a moderate beer selection. 3. The vibes are cool! It's very speakeasy-underground-cool vibes. It's dark inside with old fashioned lamps and various types of seating, both at the bar and at tables. Some tables have old fashioned bar games at them like ring and hook. They have a stage for live music and a small space for dancing. I will say the one downside of Orlando's is that when they're doing music, either live or over speakers, it's so loud that it's hard to be social there.

I was in College and Phish was booming in popularity at this time. The Flynn is a small theatre and Phish was playing arenas by '97. I remember listening to this taped show and dreaming about seeing them in this intimate setting. Other notables included Hood and Slave --- what a show!
