Disclaimer: I'm a little drunk. Or a lot drunk. It's going to take me 20 minutes to write this short review, just because I don't want any typos. Anyway, I returned to Red Square for the third time on my short trip to Vermont and had a sensational time. There was an incredible band playing in the alley and we had the opportunity to dance and dance in the rain, which I don't think I'll ever forget. I mean, I let my hair go from straight to natural and was in a dress that cost half of my paycheck, but I had the most fun. There was a dancefloor inside that a DJ manned after th band ended their set which was also a lot of fun. Drink prices continued to be good and staff was friendly, if a little slow. Red Square is a very hip and popular bar. Dark ambiance, Good live music, lots of people. I enjoyed drinks here with my boss and another coworker, who swear by this place. I enjoyed a few glasses of Veuve and my partners enjoyed microbrews. This is a great place for dates or business cocktails. The staff was friendly and accommodating. Attempted to go here last nite with my girlfriend (I'm 29, and she's 27). She's from France, so she showed the "bouncer" (term could not be used loosely enough here, more like a motley crew of incompetent butterballs with ear-pieces) her French license. It was deemed unacceptable. Chief Butterball required a passport, because European licenses "can't guarantee who she is." So she showed him a color copy of her french passport, which was then deemed unacceptable because it was too "crumpled." It had been folded and kept in her wallet. After a brief verbal dispute, Chief Butterball yelled "Go back to France!" Take that for what it's worth... read more

Reconsider coming to this place. You will encounter discriminatory bouncers at the door who won't let u in if you are different. The have an attitude of accepting people who have bigoted behavior. The music is not always good and its very crowded. Also be concerned for your safety here. Ive seen people get hurt here by getting glasses smashed over their heads. This is probably the one of the only night clubs in Burlington but the management could really improve their service and make this place better. read more

I'm just not impressed with Red Square. It tries so hard to be the "cool" bar in town, but just like the poseurs in high-school, the minute you TRY to be cool is the minute you A'INT. The band on Friday (Strength in Numbers) was good. I'd seen 'em at Nectars last winter and I still wanna get with the singer (she's cute as a button). So, yeah, music was the highlight. Cons include: bouncers that let in WAY too many people; overpriced drinks (this is Btown not BeanTown); pretentious clientele. I'm not gonna shit on Red Square any more than I have to though. We had a terrible experience at this place. My husband (a regular beer drinker) ordered one of the IPA beers. Sadly, the beer was flat. We looked around for our waitress but since we couldn't find her, we grabbed the attention of another waitress. This young lady was nice and once the issue was presented, she quickly removed the beer indicating that she would take it back and would send our waitress so we could order something else. A few moments later, our waitress came to the table and asked: "So, what exactly is the problem?". We explained the situation to her and she responded: "Well, there is nothing wrong with the beer so, unfortunately, you'll have to pay for it!" We were puzzled and shocked at her response. We are not your regular super exigent costumer but when something is wrong, it's wrong. I told her that I was shocked by her response and I asked her if she had checked the keg before coming to us. She said she hadn't and that she just knew there was nothing wrong with it. I told her, that she should at least check it before coming at us like that. She then said: "Well, you know what! I don't care, I'll just pay for it myself". Now, when she said that, I assumed the management of that place is probably hard on their staff and very likely also stingy and that may have been the reason why she was giving us a hard time. However, she hadn't been nice about it either, so with my guard already up, I told her that was too bad and insisted that she should go to her manager to check the keg. By now, she was far gone with a puss in her face and had stopped listening. Needles to say, we all finished our drinks (including my husband who was in fact given a new beer. Looking back, who knows if he should have drank it after all). Even when we've experienced bad service in the past, my husband has always left a minimum 20% gratitude, this time, he decided not to leave one. After all, she only brought us one serving and her attitude simply sucked. When we got home, we received an alert from our bank (we are signed up for text alerts for any charges to the account) for a total higher than the amount of our bill. The new total was exactly 20% over the amount we had paid. We called the bank and were told that the charge was still on pending status and that once that changed, they could look into it. A few days later, the charge cleared only for the original amount. I'm not sure what this was about but it's definately the first time something like this happens with a transaction for us. We will never go back to this place. read more

So first off I want to say, this bars cover charge on the weekend is $5. Pretty cheap in the land of cover charges. I head here on a Friday night after Lincoln's closes (next door) and pay $5, get a stamp, head to the bar. Order two drinks, pay for them and five seconds later I'm told by security that "somebody at the entrance wants to talk to me" okay fine. It's my hometown, I'm visiting, I assume somebody recognized me and wants to say what's up. Go outside where they tell me I need to leave because I haven't paid?!!! I promptly show my stamp, ask the girl collecting money and the guy who stamped me to vouch, and they both did, and I'm let back in. Go back inside and five minutes later I'm approached by two security staff who tell me I need to go to the front again. Okay... I'm told by some guy that I FORGED my stamp and that I was seen by somebody in the alley. Even though the girl Who took my money and the guy who gave me my stamp were both vouching for me?!?! Long story short. Dude, this is Vermont, it's five fucking dollars that I paid, with a valid stamp on my fucking hand. How about you check that and check with the people who took my money before accusing me of anything?! ITS FIVE DOLLARS. Five dollars should not make anyone act DISRESPECTFUL to ANYONE no matter the situation. A simple check in with employees would verify my presence. When I asked for an apology after being let in they fucking scoffed at me like I was a piece of dirt. The discrimination I felt here was real. My experience could have been easily avoided with simple questions and verification FROM STAFF. Poo on you red square for making my visit home memorable. And not in a good way. Red Square seems to cycle between crazy dance party turned hook-up fest on weekends and awkwardly-empty-for-such-a-big-place dive bar on weekdays. I have to agree with a previous review that the place is basically a lot of wasted potential. You could do great things with this place, but so far nobody has. Overpriced, watery drinks, nasty bathrooms, nastier bartenders. You can do so much better at so many other places around town. My advice: Don't waste your time here. read more

I got here early & it was a fun band with a fun crowd. My waitress was very nice. Later when the DJ started it was different. The DJ was good, but it gets so crowded it's uncomfortable. The door staff was very rude to patrons. I went outside to have a smoke by the 1 ashtray they have for the establishment & was lectured about where I should blow my smoke by the door staff. I've been to Red Square quite a few times since I've been in Burlington and I have to say that this place is just a ton of wasted potential. The vibe in here is pretty cool, and it's got a pretty good setup. The music is usually pretty good, and there are always two types of music going. There's techno in the Blue Room and then usually something else out in the main bar. However, getting in there is an absolute chore. The bouncers are horrendously rude and pick on those coming into the bar. On many occasions, I've had bartenders laugh at my ID, try to mess with me about my birthday, etc. Also, the drinks can be pretty weak depending on the bartender, and I've never been charged for what I drank, unfortunately it's usually an overcharge. read more

Don't come to this bar. It's obnoxious and loud, crowded and sticky. Bartenders are curt and overall unpleasant. I also had a terrible experience with the people checking IDs in the front a few years back. I had just renewed my license that day, and they didn't believe it was real. Fine, so they brought out the guy in charge. At this point, I was calm albeit a bit irritated that they were not hearing me out AT ALL about my new ID. The middle aged guy comes out and is extremely rude and arrogant, acting like I've somehow messed up because they are being completely obtuse. All of a sudden the guy begins to freak out at me because he believed I was getting angry (annoyed maybe on a freezing night while my friends are patiently waiting just inside but angry????) and accuses me of wanting to hit him. They call for a female employee who is kinder then the rest of them but takes me aside and tells me I need to apologize. I asked what for and she said to just apologize so I can finally go inside. So drunkenly and regrettably, I go over and apologize to this guy who should probably be apologizing to me. As I am about to walk into the bar, he calls out "You know, this could have been avoided if you were prettier." That is the last time I will give business to this scummy bar hiring scummy people. read more

I go to Red Square with my friends a lot because it really CAN be fun and they have great outdoor seating-- but without fail EVERY purchase this summer that I've made on my debit card has been altered. An interesting place. It was not really what I expected to see in Burlington (I'm from New York State). We went there on a Friday night in February 2007 and ended up coming back the next night as well. It's probably a good place to meet single women. The drinks are okay priced. If you tip good the bartenders will remember you and make them nice and strong. Like Matthew S. said, same DJ each night, kind of the same crowd each night also, so I could see how it could get old if I was a local. Used to be a great bar. Then it became the scene, and so now it is an ok bar. Drinks are overpriced. It's a good spot to see live music, but the standard same-DJ-same-night-every-week thing gets old and the crowd is stagnant. We attempted to make our way into Red Square, which is supposedly a trendier spot in Burlington (whatever that means), DJs, extensive selection of beer, wine and spirits, but a look at their photos online indicates that everyone drinks PBRs. I say attempted because they were charging a cover, and we had no cash. If they don't want our debit cards, we don't want them! Besides the place next door looked more laid back and less date-rapey. I've lived all around the US, and truth be told, I Love the Red Square. Multiple live DJs and bands, upto 3 at a time. Multiple bars, upto 4 at a time. Outdoor seating and dancing, a rave light room, multiple heights for dance floors and different kinds of seatings (soft and hard, benches and chairs). Usually the best music in town, over and over again; and as it should be, Loud! Even if its not my favorite, people go to bars for, drum roll please, Alcohol! Red Square has some of theee strongest drinks in town, and if they don't, its cause the bartenders are good enough to read you as a pushover drunk and they take it easy on you. Sure, they are issues, but when you sardine pack a big club with the most intense party animals the city has to offer, day after day, you have to be a little intense and have some lines and some bluster. I'm sorry Burlingtonites, a lot of you would be dead bodies in a lot of other cities in the US, so thank the Red Square staff for keeping it real and still having a good time. Cheers! I stopped by for a drink while shopping on Church St. with my girlfriend. There was a small band in their alley playing and I decided to stop by later that night. Glad I left the girlfriend at the hotel! The waitresses and bartenders are all beautiful as are the girls in the techno room in the back. There were a lot of bouncers there but it seems like they did a good job keeping out the riff-raff. While sitting on couches on the front patio I saw some drunk bum get arrested after trying to steal one of their couch cushions. It was pretty hilarious. The band Cosmodrome was pretty good, and the DJ's in both rooms were awesome. The techno room was full of hot Eastern European girls that reminded me of studying abroad in the Czech Republic. If you're in Burlington for a night you have to stop by this place to catch the bands and DJ's. Great place to see and be seen. Number one in my trip to Burlington and will definitely be back next time I'm in town. read more

I went to red square reluctantly with some friends on a night out... I say reluctantly because I see it as a Tracy hub of Burlington that also charges a cover charge ( something the spots I like don't). I didn't feel up to dancing to their shitty music so I sat with my friends' bags- they kept coming up to me and checking in that I was alright. I kept trying to respond over the obnoxious, loud, bad music that I was just not super into the spot but they couldn't hear me. With frustration I rested my head for less than a minute when one of their employees came up to me and said "you lift your head up or get the fuck out". Stopped in his bar last night to have a drink....it was a Sunday night so the place wasn't too busy, but they had a handful of people. We sat outside because it was a incredible day. Ordered a switchback and before it even arrived we were noticing a fowl odor. This restaurant has the distinct smell of sewage wafing in your nostrils. Red Square is - hands down - the BEST example of spectacularly bad planning, in regards to inclusion and accessibility (read to the end, there is a punch line). Steps to get in. There is a ramp, but it's in a cordoned off area that can only be accessed from inside the bar. Plus, the ramp has a significant lip that can break wheelchair casters (and trip people with other mobility impairments, balance issues, etc.), so even if you can somehow get to it, it's not really accessible. The walkways inside the bar are incredibly narrow and not accessible. All of the seating is tall stools and not accessible. There are stairs to get up to the dance floor. Then there's another stair or two in the back to get to the bathroom. And...wait for it...the bathroom is "wheelchair accessible". Seriously?!?!?! read more

Love this place! Always a good crowd to dance and drinks are decently priced for what you're getting. I've never had a bad experience with the bartenders or security guards! They're always attentive and always make sure the patrons are safe. Any of the bad reviews I've seen on yelp sound like people who think their shit doesn't stink and that they should get special treatment simply because they exist.
