**important things to know** CASH only, ONLY beer & wine. So, first off I ask for Michelob ultra and if they have Chelada style. No chelada then they are out of Ultra. Ok, so how about vodka...nope, this is a beer & wine only bar. Fine...food - ask for a burger just with lettuce. "We don't have lettuce" ok, how about the wings instead - I ask if there's just one flavor, surprisingly there are multiple flavors. I just go for the traditional hot. Can I get blue cheese? "No, we only have ranch, this is a bar." Really?! A bar without a standard beer or vodka. Some bar, I'm currently drinking water. Wings came out of a frozen bag. Super. Not sure why all the reviews here are just so good. Oh and the lady behind the bar, zero smile so I'm also not sure where people get "friendly" from. A Rooster Burger is a Half Pound top quality meat, Carmelized Oniions, Ortega Chiles, and American Cheeze. The French Fries are nice and crisp. The Onion Rings are beer battered. Large selection of draft beers. Pool Table, Dart Board, Juke Box and yes it is a DIVE BAR. It looks a bit scary from the outside and a little creepy on the inside, but the burger is worth it and the bartenders and owner are super cool. One of my all time favorite dive bars! Since moving a few more miles away I have neglected the Rooster...But alas! I remember the "good ole days" when they had dollar bills with autographs of down home locals on the walls...Best burgers in town and would open a tab for a local without second though. Times have changed, and I still love the Rooster...However, in the years that had elapsed they got a new grill top (I'm pretty sure the other one had about 150 years of flavor baked in!), cleaned up the walls...And succumbed to the times and stopped opening up tabs for every schmuck off the street. I really can't blame them, but ti makes it harder to "get a good drink on" when you have to keep reaching for the wallet! They did re-do the back padio area which now sports a BBQ for events, a GREAT fire pit and several chairs and picnic style tables. Great to sit with a pitcher of New castle for a few hours on a steamy summer evening. You will find alot of loved locals here at all hours, but these are happy locals (Simpson's style bar locals that I love)not the Carni types you get at other bars farther up the street! I have lived in the area for 20+ years and had never been till the other week. A dive bar for sure but that is not why I will go there again. I can't wait till the owner sells the place so I can buy the grill. So far the best burger I have had in North County and I would say it is even on par with Rocky's Crown Pub. Somehow I've lived in Oside for 19 years and never been to the rooster. Got tired of everyone telling me how fucking great the burgers are so stopped in today to check it out ... Not sure what was up but the burger was more smoked out than tommy chong at the cannabis cup. I like a char grilled burger as much as the next guy but it was all I could taste, it was like the let the bun sit on the riser to absorb all the smoke from the fire, I've never tasted anything so smokey except for the carne Asada I cooked over dry wood chips when I was shrooming at Cali roots fest ... but The onion rings were fucking awesome - the PBR was ice cold - the dood bar tending was chill - and they let us change the channel from some stupid fucking reality show about tow trucks to hockey. I'm a have to try the burger again tho - maybe I just got the wrong dood cooking it or something ?? read more

When we first drove up, gotta admit we were thinking it looked kinda sketchy. But we decided to check it out. Pat was bar tending and cracking jokes to another couple at the bar. He came over to us and was super personable. We got a couple beers, fries with amazing seasoning, a rooster burger and a chicken sandwich. The food was incredible. Just a classic dive bar feel and Pat was the best bartender I've had in a very long time. Will definitely be back next time we come to Oceanside. read more

I really truly wanted to like this place as it's around the corner from us but.... Ummm, no. I like dive bars. I like burgers. But this place is just nasty. The burger was a frozen patty from Costco with a few sad, low grade fixings. Crowd was majorly dicey. Atmosphere, well, I've lived in Wyoming and Idaho and can't remember anywhere else this janky. The best part about dive bars is the complete lack of airs that people feel they need to put on. The Red Rooster is no different. The bartenders are straight up with you and don't try to pander for greater tips and are as nice to you as you are to them. The Rooster Burger is pitch perfect to go with the beers that are slung. I happen to have gone to the Red Rooster once. Once. I'm not sure how to describe the place. It was about as big as a tool shed you could buy at Sears on sale for like $149. I vaguely remember the place having a pool table. The bar had stools. There were a few tables where groups of two or three could sit comfortably, and any larger group will wonder why they didn't go someplace better. One thing that the place does have going for it is that because it's tiny, and because of the location, apparently it doesn't draw a crowd. The four or five customers who had been in the bar had to have been regulars, because I have no idea why anybody else would be found there. If, like George Thorogood, you drink alone, and when you drink alone you prefer to be by yourself, the Red Rooster would be the place to be. read more

Back again... So after a deployment of drooling over the delicacy that is a Red Rooster burger (and no, I won't go into the Syrup Nugget monologue), this place is still numero uno. After reading some of the reviews, I will say this. This is not a fast food joint, so don't go in expecting that it's going to be like your favorite fast food place. These are REAL burgers, not that sissy crap your palate has become used to. Couple that with their personable staff and a non-chain business atmosphere, and this place falls into a class of its own. This may be the best little secret in Oceanside. They have the coldest beers, and the BEST burgers. I found it when driving down Oceanside Blvd, after just moving to the area. The staff is super friendly, but the best bartender has got to be Patrick. A middle aged bald man, with lots of personality, jokes, and all around fun guy. He puts the dive in this dive bar, but in a fun way! He said he only works Saturdays because he looks after his elderly parents during the week, so if you can there on a Saturday to see him - the show is definitely worth it. read more

Okay, my first bad review on Yelp. I had been here several times and loved the burgers, so this Saturday afternoon I found myself in the area, hungry and wanting to just chill over my lunch. I had the bad luck to end up next to a table of 4 who were discussing politics in very loud voices with incredibly foul language. The conversation was hateful and vicious and it made it impossible to enjoy my beer and food. So I asked them to "please tone down the f-bombs." My exact words delivered in a pleasant voice. 3 of them seemed willing to quiet down, but the 4th said something like, "You're in a bar lady, what do you f-ing expect?" And continued on in a like vein for a few more minutes before I gathered up my food and moved to the far end of the bar where his hate talk wouldn't be spewed in my ear from 2 feet away. The bully then got up and stood behind my chair at the bar basically saying f**k over and over while the server stood on the other side of the bar and didn't say anything to him about it. Even though I looked her in the eyes and told her he was scaring me. The other employee (older man, a manager? Owner?) stayed out of it entirely. So I wrapped up my burger and left my beer on the counter and bolted out of there. I was shaking and near tears from this guy's verbal attack. There is no excuse whatsoever for letting a drunk and abusive bully chase a customer out of your place, no matter whether he's a regular or not. I don't care that this is "dive bar." Even (I might even say especially) dive bars have a responsibility to support the rights of their patrons to have a safe and enjoyable experience. I was threatened by this guy, expressed my fear, and yet I was the one who had to leave. No burger is tasty enough for this. I don't trust the employees at Red Rooster to manage drunks and violence. It's a huge safety risk to be there. Beware. Note: 10/12/17 Alrighty then. Now I'm being attacked by the foul-mouthed self-proclaimed veteran via Yelp commenting. Dear Red Rooster Owner. Please tell Devin W. to get over it and stop harassing me. It wasn't enough for him to harass me in the bar, but now he wants to bully me while I'm sitting in my own home. Oceanside Blvd is full of rolly-polly so Red Rooster may not be the best place to get drunk. With that being said, Red Rooster is a fun dive bar and they have awesome hamburgers to boot. Horrible service. We were told that they were changing shifts so the other waitress would help us when she came in. We waited at least 10 minutes & that same waitress graciously took our drink order. When she brought our drink she also took our food order. We read how great the burger & onion rings were so...we order burger, frings (basket of 1/2 fries & 1/2 onion rings) & a basket of mushrooms. The burger was so over cooked & the fried food was not worth the calories. We have been wanting to try this little place for so long...sadly it was extremely disappointing. read more
