While a cool venue in an artsy town that is a fun and easy destination for guests, our experience…read morewith the planning team was completely horrible. They were hands down the most unprofessional event planning team I have ever experienced. All smiles and good wishes on the onset, but 'oh-so-busy-all-the-time' thereafter. Expect unreturned emails and phone calls, petty upsells, strategic disorganization, no vision, some rudeness and a lot of weird math. After about the umpteenth 'now what' it sadly felt like this small-minded, sidewinder approach was what they thought was smart business.

BRIDES BEWARE: Hidden Fees, and unprofessional coordinator Parker…read more Renting the basilica for your wedding is very expensive, $13k expensive, but what they don't disclose is that $13k is just the start of the fees they will randomly hit you with. If you're like me and money is valuable to you, then please keep reading before you book. Here is a *short* list of all the ways Parker at Basilica scams you: -1) First contract included a caveat that IF basilica gets a liquor license within 6 months you must pay them and undisclosed amount for alcohol. Parker refused to give us an amount to budget for this secret clause. -2) Next issue was when Parker rented out the Friday of our wedding without telling us the amount we would receive back. She promised us we'd "split" the cost which would mean $6k, but in reality we only received $2k back, and the Friday bride still paid the full amount. When we said no, we were told it's too late to go back and she wouldn't even issue us a new contract detailing out the change because she didn't have time. At this point we knew our contract meant nothing. -3) Third issue was when we wanted to bring in all our own rentals, including lights, since of course the lights are extra. Parker told us it would cost us a fee to remove the lights, and that we had to pay to rent the lights from her. -4) Fourth issue was after we just gave in to paying for lights that we couldn't take down, we decided to add on tables. We originally ordered 20 to be safe but we got our final count and only needed 15. Parker told us we couldn't change the tables because the Friday bride needed more. -5) One week before our wedding, we were then told we owed tax on the rentals for the lights and table rentals, even after we had her confirm there were no more incremental hidden fees. -6) Lastly our "refundable" security deposit apparently contains a $400 non-refundable cleaning fee which we also found out days before the wedding. I pray that the Basilica hires a new, professional coordinator so no other couple has to go what we went through. Good luck!!

What a miracle this place is, really. Fascinating, meaningful programming and events. I find myself thinking that there might not be another place quite like this anywhere on the planet; it truly deserves the word "unique". We love to browse the art gallery before or after a show and, embarrassingly, have yet to check out the bookstore. Sure, some of the seating isn't plush but there's couch type seating and if you're a movie lover who focuses on more than your hiney, there's plenty to love. Don't just go, join and support this treasure of an institution. My only gripe, which may not be real, is that someone told me there was a swing dance event here and I didn't hear about it.

They have an extensive number and wide range of books, including art books, most in very good or better condition. The organization is largely by subject (and even then, assignment to a particular subject area seems somewhat whimsical), but within categories, they are not well sorted - so it does take some time to browse. Pricing is a very modest flat fee, given the condition and rarity of some titles (currently $4 per hardcover, $3 per paperback). Thus it's possible to find many titles, including first editions, well under typical pricing found elsewhere. The staff people are really nice. When bagging up my purchase, one of the larger tomes ripped the paper bag slightly, so the staff person got some gaffer's tape to repair the bad and prevent it from continuing to rip apart. Thank you, TSL!

Food-wise, we got the Spicy Greens + Eggs and the Boo Boo Breakfast Biscuit. Sorry, I didn't take a photo of the Spicy Greens + Eggs and only remembered to snap a pic of the Boo Boo after I had already deconstructed it a bit. The food was good, but the biscuit stood out the most since it tasted fresh and homemade. Even though the place had a nice, chill vibe, I couldn't give it a higher rating because the service could've used some work. You walk up to the counter and see the menu written on the walls, but the breakfast items didn't have any descriptions. When we asked what was in one item, the worker looked at us and said everything was written in the handheld menu cards in front of us. So we picked up the menus--only to notice that nothing matched. When I asked about another item, he looked annoyed and said it should be written there. I pointed out that these looked like the lunch menu, and that's when his attitude changed. He wasn't necessarily rude, but he definitely wasn't as welcoming or hospitable as he could've been--especially at 8:30 in the morning.

Talbott & Arding was chosen as our first stop on our girls' getaway journey. Tucked in the Hudson Valley, just an hour from the Berkshires, it was a sweetly energetic beginning to our day. We each chose a sandwich from the counter. My smoked salmon on focaccia was a delight. The bread, airy and light, beautifully happy yeast just bounding with lift, defying the constraints of olive oil which left my fingers gloriously glistening. I haven't had a focaccia as happy as that in a minute. Super thin radish, bright pickled shallot and fresh watercress all gave a nice vibrant touch. Ben's cream cheese couldn't possibly be creamier. And the delicate, silky, fresh, luxurious salmon... What a dream. So balanced. I filled my arms with goods- iberico salami, Aleppo chili oil, Blackstrap coffee beans, local chocolates, and an adorable Talbott & Arding puzzle. I'm sure I could have easily convinced myself to buy just about everything I laid my eyes upon. The cheese counter was an absolute work of art. It's clear that Talbott & Arding is a willing servant to the gifts of the surrounding earth and people. The homage it pays is palpable. Our stop at Talbott & Arding set the tone for an intentional, peaceful, vibrant, cozy, delicious, connected trip. I'll be back immediately.
