Updating review and dropping down to 3 stars..2 out of the last 4x here I've gotten fries now fully cooked...one time was sweet potato fries and this time it was the chili cheese fries...the fries were not crispy at all....I mentioned it to the waitress that that cooks are pulling the fries up too early,, and she told me the cooks won't listen to the waitresses...oh, and the chili was below average imo..it lacked any real flavor. Also they barely put any on the fries....The burgers here are good.

Bill Lewis of Vero Beach stopping in for lunch at the Red Onion Grill in Lee - Madison County - Florida.

Traveling from Tallahassee to Vero Beach, I happened upon the Red Onion Grill on Interstate 10, at exit 262, in Lee - Madison County - Florida. Stopping at Jimmie's for gas, I noticed the small truck stop restaurant attached to the convenience store. The Red Onion is open 24/7/365 and has an extensive southern style menu with dozens of breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert and other comfort style food selections. It was Wednesday and I decided upon the Red Onion meatloaf Southern Classic lunch special. Taking my food "to go," I decided upon fried okra and hash brown home fries as my "two sides" along with garlic bread. Food wasn't bad while it remained hot. I'm not sure how the Red Onion prepares it's meatloaf, but it had a slight liver taste. The okra and hash brown home fries were tasty and freshly made. No real issues with the food. Female server was friendly and polite. My "to go" order contained condiments, flatware and napkins. Plenty of parking in this "dated" restaurant/truck stop. I will keep the Red Onion in mind on my travels to and from Tallahassee. I wouldn't mind checking out some of the other country/southern meals offered. William E. Lewis Jr. Vero Beach, Florida.

So why all the bad reviews? I was On the fence from reading the others but I'm sorry to inform you that this place is pretty good. The service was fast and friendly. The food was delicious and a huge plus, a small well stocked salad bar. They have an extensive menu with a little bit of everything. I was surprised after reading the bad. I was going to give it a 3 Star for the blaring Fox News channel tv but I've learned to ignore it like a bad four year old. Enjoy.

Had to take a break after sawing through my first chop.

Walked in with a group of seven for lunch at around 1pm on a Thursday. They sat us at a round table in the middle of the room and were very accomodatiing. The service was fine, but the food was a disappointment. The daily special was pork chops. I don't order chops very often, but figured if it's on their permanent weekly special list, I would give them a shot. I ordered a one-trip bowl through the salad bar and a bowl of soup for my two sides. The food took a while, not a big deal as we were a large group. When my plate arrived, the plastic cafeteria-style tri-sectioned plate was set in front of me with two tiny over cooked pork chops that I could not cut with my knife and fork. The coolest part was, they came out stacked on top of each other, so I had two empty plate sections, with the little stack of cardboard chops occupying the third. My bowl of beef vegetable soup arrived after the rest of the plates were delivered to the table. I had a couple of bites. It was ground burger with an overly salty broth. The salad bar on the other hand was fresh and i am glad I ordered a bowl's worth. Hey, maybe I got the last two chops that had been sitting on the edge of the grill since mid lunch rush, but they were happy to throw them in front of me as one of their signature specials, so what does that say? Two stars because they had a tv on with old Match Game reruns playing (and people were seriously watching and playing along).

I called ahead of time and they had run out of the Tuesday special, the lady was a little short and didn't Give me any alternatives or other options I had to ask questions. My order took close to 30 minutes to be completed and when I received it was the wrong order! I was kind of bummed I wanted to try the Mac and cheese and beans but for the fried ochra And beans with fried chicken. Let me tell you if I had time I would have waited but I didn't and what I did get was ammmmazing the food was soooo good! I wish I would have been able to try the mac @ cheese! If you have to stop at the gas station try to order ahead of time, def worth the wait andddd they have daily specials! The prices are soooo good too! I would def return!

Alanta (my niece) goes to school there and we were so excited to shop, sip, explore and eat at Fancy Girl Farms! John and I actually went 2 days in a row- Saturday our plans had shifted to later in the morning- so I jumped up and said lets go check out the farm instead of sitting around waiting for the college girl. Coffee, farm stand, nursery & garden tour was what awaited us Saturday. I grabbed a coffee from their sweet little cafe- it was scrumptious. The stroll through the gardens was blissful- it had rained and was going to rain more, so next to no one was out in the gardens- peace and quiet, yes please! The farm stand/ nursery was loaded with goods and I was compiling a shopping list! We returned Sunday for lunch and there was a crazy line quick when they opened- great for business! All the big families were there early to make sure they got seats. We had a party of 6 and were one of the first tables sat. Our server was fabulous, she had our drinks out fast & bread for the table. We all ordered the fried chicken and all were smart enough to split plates (since we were all driving hours home that same day). Sides around the table- mashed potatoes, sweet potato casserole, creamed corn with bacon, collard greens, black eyed peas, mac-n-cheese, fries & I'm probably missing something. We all passed food around to try too- so those sides, I tried most of them! Chicken- we got the mixed chicken white and dark meat and it was juicy, salty, crunchy skinned goodness. Top 3 for sure (truly I think I've only had one better). Mashed potatoes- too dense, very flavorful- but needs milk, sour cream, something to help loosen it Sweet potato casserole- guess what, also too dense and also wildly flavorful! The textures did not match the flavor punch Black eyed peas- delicious, really the best I've had Collard Greens- the table was bragging about how good it was Mac-n-cheese- very creamy, just the way I like it Fries- cooked perfectly Creamed Corn with bacon- very good and I loved that you can tell it's freshly made, the color! Creamy white, not artificial yellow I completely forgot about dessert- even after hearing my sister go on and on about weekly cobblers! That and the 15 layer chocolate cake- fifteen! Alright, I'll just need to go back for dessert!

Nestled beneath an old growth canopy draped with Spanish moss and surrounded by a variety of camellias, sits an old Victorian-style home (1897) that is sure to capture your imagination. We didn't stay at the bed and breakfast, but still enjoyed a delightful bite to eat, some refreshing peach tea, wonderful hospitality and best of all, stories. The owners, Scotty and Cathy, live in the home. Scotty was a wonderful host and provided an overview of the home's past, detailed accounts of odd occurrences and pictures of unexplained aberrations. Scotty is a collector and has many of his prized items on display throughout the home. Scotty and Cathy have done a great job preserving the home, its legacy and the charm that is Monticello, FL.
