This is the third time we've eaten at The 406 in five months. This is a premium eatery in Live Oak, FL; $200 for dinner for two with apps and drinks. Each visit gets a little more disappointing. It's going to be a while till we go back. We've eaten there; Oct. '25, Jan. '26 and now Apr. '26. The menu hasn't changed once. Three seasons, exact same menu. The 'specials' are just the existing menu items with ingredients from other items. It just comes off as lazy, not creative when three dishes feature a Marsala sauce. Some of the food typically isn't up to snuff every time we've gone. I made a reservation for last night and arrived and seated at a two top under a fireplace mantle, immediately adjacent to a party of eight. There were no other parties in the restaurant. I don't understand why they'd seat us at a table so small when the entire restaurant was empty. There wasn't room to set the menus down without knocking the silver off. There was an arrangement on the table the size of a salad plate and a ceramic bunny along with a pepper and salt shaker that had more rice than salt in it than salt. I had the server take away the arrangement and bunny to give us room. The flatbread, with pear, Gorgonzola, arugula and balsamic is delicious. The sesame tuna tataki is consistently good. The blackened grouper ($32) was a bit overcooked. The Alfredo sauce broke and the pasta primavera had no fresh vegetables; canned artichoke hearts, sun dried tomatoes and canned mushrooms. The pasta was fine. I asked for the pasta primavera to have the Alfredo sauce on it with shrimp, for a total cost of $32. The stems on the asparagus side dish were unpeeled and woody. The mashed potatoes were fine. Portions are large and the service is excellent with a perfectly attentive server. The drinks were great albeit slow, which I feel was the bar not supporting the waitstaff, inexcusable since there were only two tables in the entire restaurant! Ultimately it boils down to what feels like an unmotivated chef that lacks inspiration or appropriate mentorship. Here's my recos. You're premium, act like it. Put the customer first! Every single element of this establishment can be so much better with a minor adjustment. Please clean the handrails at the entrance. My hand shouldn't get filthy entering or exiting. Right size the table arrangements/decorations. Adjust the lighting at night, it's not a library. Adopt seasonal menus, highlighting the freshest seasonal ingredients. The specials should actually be SPECIAL! It's not that difficult to get ideas on tried and true flavor pairings. Fresh, well prepared food with flavor complexities are table stakes at this price point. Fresh fish doesn't smell fishy. Broken sauces, poorly prepped vegetables, canned produce and over cooked fish are unacceptable, especially when there are only two tables in the entire restaurant. Do better because I'm paying for better than that. This country is at an inflection point and you need to be meaningfully different to continue to pull in consumers when the prices of everything are about to skyrocket. read more

We're here an embarrassing amount... happy with the food... just embarrassing. Been regulars for the past year. However, in October 2023 they upgraded somehow. We've been here twice since they reopened since the hurricane and WOW! The food somehow is EVEN BETTER THAN BEFORE!!! If you go, ask for Alicia. First time here and went for weekend brunch. They don't have as big as a brunch menu as other places I've been to you won't fond waffles or pancakes or a classic eggs benny, but some of the options were crab cake Benedict, French toast, mimosas - all brunch staples. What I got what was actually listed as a starter, the avocado toast, which was topped with eggs and hollandaise and got a side of potatoes. Everything was cooked perfectly and the outside dining area was amazing. All the tables had umbrellas to protect from the sun, but it was shaded anyway and very relaxing. I will definitely have to come back to try the dinner menu. The service was great but we came right when they opened so not sure how it would be once the crowds turn up. read more

Joined my brother and my sister here for the first time, this past Saturday. What a great experience from the awesome service, to the culinary delights 406 hit it out of the park. The inside dining rooms look very quaint and were full of Southern ambiance, but we chose to grab a table inside the bar area to be near the live music. The singer was amazing so after dinner we moved to an outdoor table on the patio to enjoy some deserts and a few expresso martinis. Neither disappointed! Great job 406. We will return ! read more

This amazing place was recommended to us by our real estate agent and it did not disappoint. The ambience was great and the service even better. Their cocktails were amazing especially the value. $10 for an Old Fashioned is a no brainer. The Crème Brûlée was to die for. What an amazing find while driving through Live Oak! Venue is a large historic house. Possible to drive right by. We both had steaks, I had a filet my husband a ribeye. Both came with vegetables and mashed potatoes. Excellent meal! Cooked well and delicious! Homemade rolls at the table with butter. The service was excellent, prices were fair about $30 for 6oz filet. My wife ordered the redfish which was cooked in a way I can only assume was with the passion of a chef who loves their craft so much, they have forsaken all oaths. I ordered the Cajun ribeye which was grilled in such a way that I will be dropping by Live Oak again for only the purpose of eating here again. We kind in the Deep South. The building of the restaurant was built in 1896. 122 years ago. It is treat to have the dinner here. Very historical. I like the giant columns in front of the building. The restaurant serve new south cuisine. Interesting. The restaurant address is 406 at the Duval. It is actual address. I started with crab bisque soup. It was pleasant to have. The appetizer is Smoke Shrimp. It is Smoke and spice sprinkle. I like this dish. We also has the bruschetta but I think it just average. The entrée is blacken scallops. The blacken is southern spicy Cajun spice. I love this way. My friend has the bacon wrapped scallops and grouper. All dishes were well presented and well cook. Flavor just enough for the enjoyment. At the invitation of another couple we made reservations for Valentine's Day. Having never eaten here before we were looking forward to a great experience. I had checked online and saw it was a limited menu with a fixed price, perfect. The building and atmosphere are very quaint, loved it. Upon arriving on time for 7:30 PM reservations we had to wait as they were very busy, lots of hustle bustle. Inquired about the bar I'd heard about, "well, it's full, you can't go in there." Ok, walked to the door, looked in and didn't go in. We were seated within 15 minutes and greeted by our Server, Jenn, was her name I believe. Jenn was not pleasant and was dressed in a hoodie sweatshirt & spandex/yoga pants.? As a matter of fact, not one person there who was employed could be differentiated from a customer. Street clothes, no uniformity, frankly she looked sloppy. She also knew nothing about the featured wines when my friend's wife asked some questions. The menu was pretty straightforward, one app per couple, then salad, soup, entree' & dessert (was looking forward to the bread pudding, heard it was great). Jenn told us prior to ordering that some menu items were no longer available; Crab Bisque, Goat Cheese, Cheesecake & Bread Pudding. We ordered the Heart-shaped Crab Cake, as did our friends. 3 Caesar, 1 House salads. 3 French Onion soup & a Bruschetta substitution for a soup. My wife and I ordered the Filet, 1 Shrimp & a Scallop. The appetizer of Heart Shaped Crab Cake arrived and I first thought it was a potato pancake, it was flat, somewhat burned and was in two pieces. Frankly, it was unappealing and not very good. We did not finish it. Three Caesar salads arrived and they all had different portion sizes. My friend's wife scooped some salad to him as she had so much. My salad looked like somebody took their hand and either caught it or pushed it across the plate, unbelievable. As we all finished our salads, plates getting collected, my wife's House Salad arrived. Someone forgot because the portion size for the house salad was ridiculously large and late, Ugh. Three French Onion soup's arrive. The soup was cold broth with some onions & salt. There was a large crouton in it and the cheese was a Asiago/Parmesan crisp that was just a big glob in the middle. To top it off, the plate that my soup cup arrived on was so greasy I could write my name. Abysmal, this is not Fine Dining as advertised. Just prior to the Entree's arriving the Bruschetta showed up, seriously? We took it home later in a box. My wife and I ordered the Filet, it was delicious. I would offer that in the future you not use an ice cream scoop for the mashed potatoes, looked cafeteria style. Dessert came, not my first choices, no coffee/tea offered, just as well. My wife and I paid a grand total of $228, cocktails included. The fixed menu price was $75 per person. I paid $150 for some of the worst food I've eaten in quite a long time. Our Server couldn't be bothered. The owners/managers clearly overbooked the restaurant. Fire your logistics person. The seating felt like sitting on top of one another, if I was bumped once, I was bumped 20 times. The community of Live Oak deserves better. Whether it's Miami, Chicago or Live Oak, people expect a higher standard when you say Fine Dining. Again, this was not fine dining and I certainly did not get what I paid for unfortunately. read more

Veggies and crab cakes were good and sweet tea was A+. Staff was friendly and place was clean. Although the building is an old house made into restaurant had I not looked on here to find it, I would have never known. No sign out front. It looks like a bed and breakfast. Wow what a perfect culinary experience I had there. To start I had the sangria and the crab cake appetizer, perfect amount of crab and the hollandaise sauce was delicious. Perfect mixed sangria by the way. For my entree I had the veal it came with freshly roasted vegetable's perfectly cookedand potatoes au gratin that had silky smooth cheese sauce. Everything was so rich and freshly made. I couldn't eat dessert but I'm going back, so I'll let you know. If you're in this part of town, it would be a crying shame to miss this place. The atmosphere here is nice, and it seems like they try to be a fine dining restaurant. Unfortunately, the boil and eat shrimp were somewhat mealy, and they were not deveined. So when you peel the shrimp, your fingers get covered in shrimp poop. The pasta entree was served cold'ish. When I brought it to the waiter's attention, he took the plate back to the kitchen, and two minutes later he brought it back to me. Still cold. I plowed through it, not wanting to make a scene. The crime brûlée was horrible. The sugar on top was a quarter inch thick solid crust the required a chisel to get through. It appears they pour hot melted sugar over the custard, vs hitting a thin sprinkle of sugar with a blowtorch. Considering the limited options in this town, The 406 is not the worst, but they could fix "the little things" and it would go a long way to making them great. read more

I've been here a number of times in the last year, most recently for dinner with some large groups. The service is always good, and you should ALWAYS check out the specials. The crab cakes are my favorite, but I also love to come on Thursdays for prime rib night. One thing that's a little off to me is that the bread tastes like laundry detergent, but I need to eat less bread anyways so I get over it.
