Stopped for dinner about 4:00 on a Saturday. Sat at the countertop. Both girls working were very nice and quick. Boyfriend had ate here in past and was very happy with food. Today he wasn't as impressed. He got the chicken fried steak and mashed potato's. Mashed potato's were out of a box and not what they used to serve. I had hamburger steak with green beans and greens. The greens had jalapeños in them and the green beans were the larger beans. Both had great flavor. The hamburger steak was just your average one but the brown gravy and onions on top were good. A hole in wall trucker favorite in Lee , Florida right off I-10. I saw a billboard on the way south to Port Orange, looked it up on Yelp and decided the picture of the onion rings was enough to stop for lunch. Ordered the cheese burger with onion rings. The waitress said they weren't homemade, but were really good. Well they sure fooled me, because these onion rings tasted so like fresh cut homemade rings! The cheese burger was delicious also. Updating review and dropping down to 3 stars..2 out of the last 4x here I've gotten fries now fully cooked...one time was sweet potato fries and this time it was the chili cheese fries...the fries were not crispy at all....I mentioned it to the waitress that that cooks are pulling the fries up too early,, and she told me the cooks won't listen to the waitresses...oh, and the chili was below average imo..it lacked any real flavor. We decided to grab lunch here when coming home from Tallahassee. We were waited on quickly and the staff is attentive. The food is amazing. It is cooked fresh to order. I had the cheese burger and onions rings and it gets 10/10. My husband had the fried country steak and fried okra, he said they were fresh and delicious. We ordered a slice of coconut cake to go-we were too full to eat it there. Our total bill was about $30, I find that to be a really good deal. read more

12/29/19 TLDR: STAY AWAY! I was starving and exhausted but I passed a lot of chain restaurants at other highway exits because I wanted to have a meal at an individual restaurant. I sat down at Red Onion and should have been warned when it took forever for anyone to even bring a menu. They were out of most of the dishes so I ordered fried chicken. The menu says that fried chicken takes 10-15 minutes and I waited patiently. 30 minutes later I asked about my food. I was told that it takes 20 minutes and I should wait. An hour later I was told it would take five more minutes. An hour and a half later I was told that it would still take five minutes. All this time I was waiting, no Wi-Fi, poor cell phone service, old food and filth on the floor, swatting flies away. After one and a half hours of waiting and swatting flies, I got up and left. An absolutely horrible experience. read more

Traveling from Tallahassee to Vero Beach, I happened upon the Red Onion Grill on Interstate 10, at exit 262, in Lee - Madison County - Florida. Stopping at Jimmie's for gas, I noticed the small truck stop restaurant attached to the convenience store. The Red Onion is open 24/7/365 and has an extensive southern style menu with dozens of breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert and other comfort style food selections. It was Wednesday and I decided upon the Red Onion meatloaf Southern Classic lunch special. Taking my food "to go," I decided upon fried okra and hash brown home fries as my "two sides" along with garlic bread. Food wasn't bad while it remained hot. I'm not sure how the Red Onion prepares it's meatloaf, but it had a slight liver taste. The okra and hash brown home fries were tasty and freshly made. No real issues with the food. Female server was friendly and polite. My "to go" order contained condiments, flatware and napkins. Plenty of parking in this "dated" restaurant/truck stop. I will keep the Red Onion in mind on my travels to and from Tallahassee. I wouldn't mind checking out some of the other country/southern meals offered. William E. Had dinner last night. Rib eye med rare with mashed potato and coleslaw(discusting) and coke $32.. served on plastic school lunch portioned plate. not worth it it's the only game in town so they got you. Then, breakfast. Cheese omelet with home fries toast and bacon also coffee. The cheese omelet look like plastic cheese an overcooked egg. And the coffee wasn't good at all. I thought I could salvage breakfast with a piece of this coconut cake I saw but when she cut a piece and serve it to me it looked like there were many layers of pancake covered with coconut cream. So why all the bad reviews? I was On the fence from reading the others but I'm sorry to inform you that this place is pretty good. The service was fast and friendly. The food was delicious and a huge plus, a small well stocked salad bar. They have an extensive menu with a little bit of everything. I was surprised after reading the bad. I was going to give it a 3 Star for the blaring Fox News channel tv but I've learned to ignore it like a bad four year old. Enjoy. read more

Walked in with a group of seven for lunch at around 1pm on a Thursday. They sat us at a round table in the middle of the room and were very accomodatiing. The service was fine, but the food was a disappointment. The daily special was pork chops. I don't order chops very often, but figured if it's on their permanent weekly special list, I would give them a shot. I ordered a one-trip bowl through the salad bar and a bowl of soup for my two sides. The food took a while, not a big deal as we were a large group. When my plate arrived, the plastic cafeteria-style tri-sectioned plate was set in front of me with two tiny over cooked pork chops that I could not cut with my knife and fork. The coolest part was, they came out stacked on top of each other, so I had two empty plate sections, with the little stack of cardboard chops occupying the third. My bowl of beef vegetable soup arrived after the rest of the plates were delivered to the table. I had a couple of bites. It was ground burger with an overly salty broth. The salad bar on the other hand was fresh and i am glad I ordered a bowl's worth. Hey, maybe I got the last two chops that had been sitting on the edge of the grill since mid lunch rush, but they were happy to throw them in front of me as one of their signature specials, so what does that say? Two stars because they had a tv on with old Match Game reruns playing (and people were seriously watching and playing along). read more

Was traveling thru here heading back to Sw Florida. The fried chicken is great, takes 20 minutes to get but really worth it. Waitress was friendly and attentive. I called ahead of time and they had run out of the Tuesday special, the lady was a little short and didn't Give me any alternatives or other options I had to ask questions. My order took close to 30 minutes to be completed and when I received it was the wrong order! I was kind of bummed I wanted to try the Mac and cheese and beans but for the fried ochra And beans with fried chicken. Let me tell you if I had time I would have waited but I didn't and what I did get was ammmmazing the food was soooo good! I wish I would have been able to try the mac @ cheese! This little hole in the wall is open 24 hours, and has great burgers and breakfast! The restaurant is in a truck stop, but don't let that stop you from coming in. It's very clean and homey inside. If you like home cooked and southern style meals, this is definitely a nice place to stop. The hubs and I were heading home from Tallahassee & we stopped here to grab a bite, and boy were we pleased! This place is great for travelers who want to grab gas, and eat a home cooked meal, rather than gas station food. The hubs breakfast sandwich had a burger, sausage, bacon and egg on it!! Sooooo good! I'm here in Madison cleaning up after hurricane Idalia and there isn't much to choose from when it comes to food so I chose Red Onion to eat. The food was fair, most the time it was over cooked but I can't and didn't complain about it and ate my food, I was hungry. I'd spend 4 nights a week there eating and I witnessed a lot of stuff. The cooks (a cook) was always occupied with the waitresses thinking he's god gift to women. He would corner them in places,like where they keep the salad bar plates and by the coke machine. It wasn't any of my business so I didn't say anything about it. I thought if they didn't want it they would've said something to someone about it. Tonight I went in there hungry after working 12 hours and ordered a half chicken to go and a salad. I ate my salad while my chicken was cooking and that guy was in there tonight. My dinner sat sat on a plate in the window under the heat lamps for 10 min. My waitress was expecting my dinner to go so she didn't think it was mine. She told that cook it needed to go, asked him to make it to go, so now my food has set for 20 min.... He walked away and didn't touch my food he then came back to the window and pushed my food almost off the edge of the window and said whose food is this? I spike up and said it's mine!! He then got this look on his face and said,, huh? I said that's mine and I needed that to go can you please make it to go so I can be on my way. He looked at me and said"are you talking to me" I said "yes" he replied back saying "you don't talk to me like that"! I said "sorry I'm just hungry and want my food to go it's been in the window for 30 min now". He then looked at me almost coming through the window saying "you're not going to talk to me like that you cracker". I stood up and left. I'm going to contact an attorney over this but I just want to get that off my chest and for anyone wanting to try this place all I can say is buyers beware enter at your own risk. read more

The 1 star is for hot food.... Customer service - doesn't exist. They were nice enough to take my order and bring out the food. But beyond that, nothing. No refill of water or ask if ok. I sat and waited for someone to come back to table to ask them for desert. Yet she flew by and picked up the empty basket without a word. As I cashed out, shaking my head, she asked what was wrong. I advised of the lack of service and wanted to order something else. I asked how could they be making money with such horrible service. She said they get paid very well and make plenty of money. I'm just going to write this at the counter - where I prefer sitting when one is available, ideally squared in front of the kitchen window. "It's all about attitude" is the most prominent sign I find in this diner - right about the hotlamps at the kitchen output shelf. A man I worked with 30 years ago had that as a mantra - so it's a nostalgic expression for me. Attitude here means all business, diminished pleasantries, eye-lids at half-mast with an overall "smiles aren't necessary here - we're good at what we do so general niceties aren't needed to mask inefficiencies around here" vibe. Ordered the Cheeseburger with onion rings (opted against the Jimmie Cheeseburger which would have been an unnecessary 1/2 lb). Onion rings were made from scratch (I.e., sliced, battered, deep-fried to order) and burger adorned and plates with rings in under five minutes. Not a smile in sight - it was as though I'd been transported to Northern France - in some Routier / Poids Lourdes joint. Refreshingly ambivalent in the largely saccharin rural Deep South which North Florida often is. I am definitely returning - and I'd encourage you to do the same. This quality of yesteryear diner is rapidly evaporating - and at risk of using two overused adjectives, I'll go ahead and use "iconic" and "authentic" the way they're meant to be used (judiciously and sparingly) You need to come here. read more

Got the special of the day - there were a few options but I chose the fried catfish based on the servers recommendation. Loaded baked potato and green beans as sides. Definitely satisfactory. Food was fresh and delicious. Served to me quicker then I anticipated. Sweet tea was good, and I got a cup of the beef veggie soup - that was very good - prob favorite thing about my meal. Is it the best diner ever? No. Does it deserve 5 stars? Yes, because there's nothing else to eat around these parts - unless you feel like Arby's is a better choice! read more

This is a truck stop so don't go for ambience but if you love old style Southern cooking, this is your place. Daily specials like fried chicken, country fried steak, catfish, shrimp...depending on the day include choice of two sides from a large selection including the best fried okra I have eaten in a very long time, baby limas, turnip greens, buttered carrots, Mac and cheese, blackeyed peas and many more. The servers are very sweet and friendly and there is a bit of a wait at lunchtime because they do a bustling carry out business. But we only waited about 10 or 15 min for our order and it was piping hot and well worth the wait. We are on a road trip and planning our return route to make sure we pass here when the Red Onion Grill is open. read more

I'm a over the road Entertainment truck driver, I have millions of miles on the road, this will be 1 mile I wish I missed. I had the fried chicken dinner with mashed potatoes and green beans. The green beans were fresh no seasoning what so ever, mashed potatoes straight out of box with salt added; gravy was just ok. Let's talk about the greasy chicken after eating what was lackluster, my plate had spoons full of grease on my plate. The $14 cost was way to much for what i got in quality. Southern soul food as well. Decent fare for a truck stop. Don't expect 5-star service or quality and I doubt you'll be too disappointed. Pretty standard Southern comfort food, lots of options. I am always skeptical of places with THAT many different menu items, but I've had a few of their dishes over the years, and they're acceptable. Beats Waffle House, if slightly pricier. If your arteries can handle it, try the "King of the Road" sandwich. Sausage, bacon, egg, cheese, more grease than a 15 year old's face--what's not to love? read more
