Red Mesa is a classic Northern Michigan spot, both the Boyne City & Traverse City locations are great! They have some of the best chips and salsa, awesome margarita options and new specials all the time! I can't count the number of times I've gone, and I've had a great experience every single time! The portions here are huge! The enchiladas are packed full & the guajillo sauce is smoky & has a little kick! Fajitas are always a show stopper, and Red Mesa's are packed with flavor & come out sizzling hot! This was my first time trying the birria bombs and I would totally recommend starting out with these any time you stop by! read more

Pretty good! Margaritas are top notch and hold up to their regional award winning reputation. The carne asada burrito was phenomenal, just a bit smaller than I'd like! Wait time was reasonable, and the vibe was fitting. Definitely a quality Mexican food find in the region. read more

Our food was great, our server was on top of things and it was a nice place to eat. We went for a Sunday brunch in Boyne City with family and preferred not to wait an hour so we ended up in Red Mesa Grill because Mexican food is good anytime. We weren't disappointed my shrimp enchiladas were great, my wife's quesadillas came just like she ordered, my brother in law's carnitas were outstanding and my other brother in law's and his wife's tacos were very good also. The portions were just right, the spice level wasn't too spicy for anyone and the food came out hot and timely. The place is decorated as most Mexican restaurants are with bright colors and the music playing added a nice touch, not too loud so we could talk. Our server was attentive and we got everything we asked for. A good stop. read more

Lively atmosphere, awesome margaritas, and very good waiter, but food was very sub-par. Fish was overcooked, burrito was served cold. Kitchen very slow and food seemed to have sat around before it came out. read more

I have never dined at a Mexican restaurant where they didn''t bring chips and salsa to start. I like shredded beef burritos but didn't see that on the menu. So ordered the bean and rice burrito. It was decent and filling My wife ordered the pork enchiladas. The pulled pork had absolutely zero flavor. Just flat tasting mush. read more

This was our first time here. It was recommended by our friends who live in North port. We loved our food and drinks. I had the Caribbean chicken quesadilla and my wife had the mushroom enchilada. The chips and salsa were very good and our server (Crew) was excellent. The next time we visit traverse city, we will definitely go there again read more

Food and service was good as always! Much better service than Lake Street Pub. This is the go to spot for Mexican in Boyne City. read more

Perhaps it was because my family ordered take out, because from other reviews they may wonderful service! But I was taken back when I tried their food and it was not yummy whatsoever as people have described. Granted I've tried Mexican food from Chicago and San Francisco which have great spots -- but we ordered the carne asada burrito, shrimp tacos, and nachos and they were pretty distasteful. With my burrito only have the rice and meat inside and the veggies and sour cream on the side?! And there's only two tacos an order for it being pricey. Red Mesa was unfortunately the bottom tear of my list. read more

Food was great. Decor great. Service was good I was a little bummed they had no tostada but what I did get was really good. We had party of 6 who all had something different and everyone raved about their food. Worthy stop read more

We have been going there for years and it's always a place we look forward to. There's usually a short wait, but it's worth it. If you like extra hot sauce to put in their salsa, ask for "the bomb" - which they give you with toothpicks and latex gloves. read more

Food just ok Not real Mexican. ...... other places with good food .. guacamole very hot .. salsa not good read more

Been coming to Red Mesa for over 10 years. Food was always good, however, after my experience tonight, I'm rethinking whether I want to go back. Ordered chicken fajitas and there was very little chicken and lots and lots of very greasy overcooked onions and green peppers. Beyond that, chips and salsa were always provided At no charge. That has changed. Now, if you want them, you'll pay extra. What happened to the Red Mesa? read more

This place was pretty good. I'm traveling with friends this weekend and we are staying in Boyne. We drove the quick drive to Boyne City for dinner and one of my friends eats gluten-free and vegetarian so we were looking for something that would accommodate all of us. I got the pina colada but unfortunately it wasn't as pineappley or coconutty as I wanted it to be. We had looked up the menu online and saw there was a drink that they light on fire, I was expecting something more dramatic but it was still pretty cool; my friend ordered it. I had the quesabirria tacos for dinner and they were pretty good. I really wanted the chicken pineapple quesadilla but I figured it had more dairy than the tacos; one of my other friends got it and said it was okay. My GF friend got the veggie tacos with a corn tortilla and a veggie side. Waitservice was friendly and fast as well. The restaurant is much more larger than it looks, it goes all the way to the back of the space. I would come back here again for Mexican food. We also got complimentary chips and salsa and both were very good. read more

I've been a customer for over 20 years...actually soon after they opened in boyne. They recently changed their menu and honestly not the the better. I know change is good to keep things fresh but you haven't changed it much in all this time. You took off all ground beef and pork, changed the nachos for the worse and I got you got a new chip vendor and now charging for chips, but too much change doesn't allow your faithful customers to enjoy their favorite dishes. Why are the wings off the menu?! That was one of the best things on the menu. Why won't you brong back more local whitefish dishes like the chili encrusted whitefish you ran frequently as a special? And don't get me started on the new menu...why in the world would you make people twirl a menu to read it? Please bring back the wings. more whitefish specials especially since some of the other dishes like the stuffed poblano which my husband always ordered isn't even cooked thru? I was there and ordered nachos the last time and they didn't even melt the cheese twice now. Train your back of house staff better, quality has been slipping for the past year. I will still visit but not nearly S often with the new menu. Sad read more

I ordered the Birria entree the other night to go . When I got home the food was still plenty hot, beautifully packaged up, tortilla chips crispy and plentiful. The portion was generous and the flavors out of this world! Here is the menu item. Birria...Chile braised beef, birria broth, cotija cheese, onion, cilantro, red onion mojo, sour cream, guacamole, corn tortillas, yucatan rice & black beans. Try it you'll love it! read more

Easy to get in with our group of 7 at 5:30 on a weeknight it did fill up closer to 6pm The drinks were tasty and had a marg menu with creative choices. We enjoyed the armadillo eggs and other things like tacos, burritos. Mango salad, enchilada etc. Not the usual Mexican rest as it had some less common Latin choices as well Our sever was amazing! Attentive and friendly! read more

Great food in a family atmosphere. Loud place... hard to hear others- but lots of fun and good food!

Visiting from out of town. This was the second time in two years and I hope to continue to make this a consistent part of our annual ski trip. Excellent margaritas served in a fun glass. Also recommend the Armadillo Eggs appetizer. It actually tastes meatier than the menu description. Offer fresh (not pickled) jalapeños read more

Unfortunately not great. Steak for fajitas was so rubbery you could bounce it like a ball. Guac was flavorless and chips tasted like they had been sitting out for weeks. Somebody in our party had fries and they were way too salty. Service was friendly but very slow. You're probably better off skipping this one, sadly. read more

Wish I had anything good to say about our experience at this restaurant. We were hopeful walking in due to the good reviews. Service was down right horrendous. Couldn't get anything to the table that wasn't just an entree. Waiter couldn't bring us water, chips and salsa, or any sides for our entrees. Wish it was a better experience, because I'm not one to make poor reviews, but even the food when it did arrive was 3rd grader quality. Even in a pinch, I wouldn't recommend this place because the turn around time on food, or service takes so long. read more

Our first time here. Our 17th anniversary trip. My wife chose Boyne City... I was gunning for Petoskey. My wife's choice was class A as usual. Place was near packed on a Saturday night. Mostly tourists like us we gathered. We walked in lady asked how many? My wife replied 2. We were ushered to our table and a young man named Austin took our order. Within 10 mins the food was served. The food was very good. A little spicey. Hit the spot. Austin checked on us frequently. Awesome service! While walking out the owner/manager asked where we were visiting from? I proudly replied, Van Buren Twp MI. We thanked him for an awesome experience and left. Yes we will recommend this place to all friends, family or colleagues visiting this place. read more

Visit to Red Mesa Boyne City, Saturday August 10th, 2024. We have been to this location a couple of times, typically go to the one in Traverse City. Asked for a booth, said they couldn't because they sit in sections put us at a table but sat the next two groups in booths, this was after not being greeted so we said hi and how many then someone just started walking to a table with menus. The table was in full view of the kitchen and the server area, which is not a good location nor good things to watch. Servers were scooping chips out of the bin with a scoop that stayed in the bin with the chips plus using their hands to hold the chips into the scoop and put in the basket...bare hands. Our server was really nice and was very apologetic that the appetizer and the food all came out at once. It was not that busy. We have had decent visits here before but will definitely stick with making the drive to Traverse City from now on. read more

My second time here and I can't wait to return. Everything is always fresh and delicious, but I LOVE the cherry margaritas. So unusual!

No just no not real Mexican food it's terrible service was okay but the food wasn't even close to real Mexican food it's just TERRIBLE!

Have not been here in two years, & very happy we returned. The menu has changed, but our very capable & professional server Justin helped us navigate it to our delight. Red Mesa should promote this young man to a manager training position. Although it would be tough losing him in his current role. Thank you Justin, everything you suggested wast fantastic! read more

Red Mesa Grill - Stuffed Poblano Pepper - Latin American Near Me - Boyne City, Michigan

Visited Red Mesa Grill in Boyne City this past weekend. We love sitting at the bar but had a poor experience with the bartenders. They were rude! Bartenders are first impression of any restaurant. I would not have these two women at the front of the house that way. I wouldn't recommend anyone to go here. Perhaps Red Mesa can use this as a opportunity to work with its staff and professionalism and etiquette. Not to mention when asking for 20% more in tips from customers. read more

My family and I came into town from Petoskey to enjoy the "stroll the streets" to listen to the live music bands and enjoy great food. This restaurant was the perfect location for the event; we ate outside and listened to the music and had a great time. The lady inside who worked there named "Brenda" was very helpful to get us seated and took great care of us. Because it was super busy, we waited like 15 minutes to get our drinks and somehow our ticket with our order was lost so it too took awhile to get our food. But when we did get it, it tasted amazing. It was fresh and hot. And my mango margarita was the best I've ever had. It has become my favorite margarita. Will definitely be back. read more

Right on the main dragon point city the staple of Boyne city has been there for over 25 years and it's been there for a reason because it's good. Magnum hospitality, also own son Café Sante' do a fine job here. The food is not Mexican or Tex-Mex. It's more central American so it has a little different slant on the way things are done, but it's really good. Margaritas are great and the service is always good. read more

Great food and service. Stuffed poblano and pork carnitas burrito were very tasty, as was the smoked refried beans.

I am here today to share my opinion on the red mesa grill in Boyne city Michigan I personally got some $7 Mac and cheese with fries the Mac n cheese was just boxed Kraft it was halfed cooked with chunks of cheese my brother and law said that the street corn tamales he said they were putrid they were dry and didn't follow the street corn flavor. My child got a kids meal and she got done with the puzzles in 5 minutes. But if you want a margarita or root beer it's a great place to go.sorry for the Grammer mistakes read more

Red Mesa Grill - My Mac and cheese and fries by the way the fries were dry - Latin American Near Me - Boyne City, Michigan

If you don't think of this place as a Mexican food restaurant, you will start with clearer expectations. They bill themselves as a Latin inspired restaurant, so that's fine. However, they should not label a dish "Brazilian steak" because they don't know at all what Brazilian style steak is. Theirs is skirt steak with guajillo sauce and garlic green chile. Whereas in Brazil, the most popular kind of steak is the crown of the sirloin and it would not have those aforementioned spices on it. It would be mostly seasoned with salt, pepper and a bit of fresh garlic. The chicken and chorizo stuffed poblano, had very good flavors, but it wasn't completely adequately warm inside. It may have been cooked previously, and then reheated, but part of the stuffing inside the poblano was tepid, and an end part was chilly. So, for some reason they didn't do the reheating process on the "oven baked" stuffed poblano. The guacamole and black beans were good. The front room is extremely noisy, so normal conversation is difficult. They need some acoustic absorption panels or lots of tapestries to muffle the noise. The second room is a bit quieter, and the back room is the best for conversation. If this restaurant were in a larger city, they'd have to compete harder to stay afloat, but in Boyne City they survive because of scant competition read more

This used to be a five star restaurant, but it has slipped over the years. Tonight it was awful at about a one star. Tacos were served in ice cold corn tortillas. If everything had been warm it might have worked. Tortilla chips were almost unsalted so not as good as usual. Unlike its sister restaurant they had no NA wine. read more

I got a bean and rice taco and my husband got a burrito. The best part of my taco was the corn in the salsa and the cheese. The rice and beans that were in the taco and on the side had a smokey flavor that I really didn't care for. My husband really didn't care for the rice and beans either but he's still raving about his burrito....he thought it was amazing. The chips and salsa were good and the service was excellent. Prices were kinda high in my opinion. I'm on the fence about returning. read more
