We've been coming here for 40 years and had consistently good food and service until tonight. Poor service and we sat at the bar? Bartender talked to her gal pals the whole time. Wings were bland, freezer burned and fried in old oil. Mixed veggies the same. We thought maybe a homemade dessert might make up for it...until we watched a waitress box up a piece of peanut butter pie while licking her fingers removing the extra fluff from the knife and then handling the slice by hand. She did the same after adding whipped cream and chocolate and again after slicing and serving 2 pieces of carrot cake. Since Hoppies Tavern is a lake bar/restaurant and the vibe had me feeling the water, I went with the fish. I would definitely recommend it. Would, waiter was over the top useless, he "repeated" an order back to me which i thought was nachos, order comes out to be a burrito, i accept that he probably heard me wrong, took one bite, tasted like absolute, "garbage", told him this, he said (4x)s thst he repeated my order. Regardless, my understanding was for an order of nachos. Never recieved an indication as to what was going on in the slightest. Finally just said I'd pay for it and take the plate away. We frequent Hoppies and partake in the Friday all you can eat whitefish or cod as we venture back to Topinabee very year or so. This year the cod was all you can eat, and was it as good as ever. The cod was nicely cooked just right with white flaky meat, not over cooked. We started with house Salads with homemade blue cheese that came with fresh chunks of cheese. We came here last minute on a Saturday after my grandmothers funeral. We called ahead and even though they don't take reservations, they were super kind and accommodating saying that they would get us into a big table for our party of probably 20 people. The food is ehhh alright we had onion rings as an app. For lunch we had a ham and cheese sandwich , wings, wet burrito, and a chicken quesadilla Way understaffed there was one waiter running around. The lady who was serving was a little rude but she was the only one there so I see where she is coming from We had to get up and get our own menus and refills because she was running around not paying attention. The place is decorated well like any sports bar. The portion sizes were below average except for the sandwiches which are huge. The wings looked and tasted like frozen chicken nuggets lathered in an interesting bbq sauce. I can't really count this against them but they don't have sweet tea and we are from the south... There tea is also from a fountain and extremely strong We were recommended this place by countless people and it was way out of our way so I am a little disappointed Last thing, the boat dock has no indication of what it's for and it is hard to parallel park at. COVID REVIEW: The staff followed the basic guidelines very well! There's hand sanitizer by the door, and most all the staff wore their masks correctly (except one young man who was wearing it over his mouth). There was also one man, seemingly the owner or manager? Who wasn't wearing a mask and was walking around, but other than him everyone seemed to follow the signs they posted! The food was actually really great, especially for being "bar food". I was at this place about a month ago. After waiting ten minutes for a waitress to take our order we left. The place wasn't busy and the waitstaff were fooling around in the back. Hostess was rude and unaccommodating. Very frustrating as Hoppies is definitely out of our way to get there and to be treated so poorly by staff soured us on this place. read more

Thanks YELP for another great dinner. Saw that Hoppies was known for authentic Mexican food so we drove 20 minutes to a Tavern in the woods north of Indian River. As usual the reviews were correct. Nice bar and beer selection. Plenty of tasty mixed drinks on the menu for my wife, and great atmosphere. Place is rustic and all the Big 10 flags were prominently displayed. Also all the Armed Forces. We liked that. Menu has changed slightly since it has been on Yelp. No longer have the stuffed shrimp Jammers. Don't know what else has changed, but the bartender was concerned enough to have me show her what needed updated. We started with Irish Nachos. I was leery of that but the waitress suggested it. Normally these are served on potato skins and l think that Hoppies were also, but they took the time to cut them into bite sizes pieces and season them. That made a difference from others I've had because these were very good. Had the server bring me a bottle of Sriracha and liked them even better. The Mexican menu isn't as authentic as advertised but has very good choices. My wife got a seafood burrito and I got a beef burrito. The salsa is homemade and is delicious. Would go back often if we lived in the area. Just a very nice hidden gem that we would not have found without Yelp. Food, service, atmosphere and FOOD! The waitress was awesome, the place was clean and the fish fry was great! Next time I might try the Mexican food if I can steer my stomach away from the fish because that looked delicious too. Decent little bar as far as atmosphere goes. The service was okay and the nachos were good. The thing that slightly irritated me is that they had obnoxious signs about wearing masks all over their front door and then the staff didn't even wear them most of the time. The bar tender would put it on every once in a while, but mostly just left it off and one of the kitchen staff was walking around the common area without it at all. Our waitress was the only one who wore a mask the entire time. All the customers seemed to be following protocol, so it was just weird that the staff didn't seem to care. read more

I really had a good time at Hoppies. The food was really good and the service was fast. I was very impressed with the food and atmosphere. I really appreciated that they had signage at the door addressing the COVID rules and asking people to wear masks. We were there a bit before dinner time, so it wasn't crowded and it made me feel like I was in a safe well managed place. We saw the staff wearing masks and wiping down the items on the table. I did notice a bartender that seemed to have a hard time keeping his mask on, pulling it down on his chin. I hope to see that improve. Not the best beginning for the night. We were a party of 10, and another party of 8 came in after us. We were seated at 2 tables of 5 , and they were seated at a table for 10 at the same time we were seated What the he-- ?? Very unorganized on the seating and table set up. I have been here many times in the past and have found it to be good food, good prices and good service. We came in tonight-called ahead-only a large group and 3 small tables of customers in the building prior to us . There were 9 of us: 6 adults and 3 children, one in a high chair. We were shoved up against the wall and very crowded. We asked to be moved to a different area but they couldn't accommodate us. Really?!! I ordered a glass of wine and asked for a fresh bottle. That was immediately rejected by our server telling me it has most likely been opened a few days ago. I inquired if this was SOP and she said yes. I was able to able to convince her to discuss this with the bartender. She did, he popped a fresh bottle and we decided to stay. (Everyone in our group was ready to leave.) It was too much drama for a restaurant that was less than 1/5 filled. We did not feel welcomed or that our business was important. Now most importantly to share here is that we are extremely experienced in the restaurant business. Beyond experienced. This attitude was unnecessary and left us with a bad view towards Hoppies. We talked it up to our visitors and Hoppies blew it! The rest of our dining experience was fine and uneventful, just as it should be. Nothing phenomenal. Good food, not great, a server with too many tables. Very basic. I was shocked and surprised with the attitude because Hoppies has always been near and dear to us. But considering we spent over $60 per group I expected a better experience; sadly it did not come. Perhaps we will eventually return, but not in the near future. Let me just say this, I walked out. I have never been more rudely greeted by the person seating people as I have at this place. Hoppies management, this old lady has probably been working there 30 years, but to be greeted at the door with, "How many?", "name", now this is what DISGUSTED me enough to walk out, this old woman immediately turned her back, and sat her fat ass at the bar, and left us just standing there. The place was busy, we expected a wait, I had to go up to this so called "greeter woman sitting at the bar and ask what to do. She snarky said get a drink and go outside, nothing about how long a wait, nothing friendly at all. It was my wife's birthday, I didn't want to make a scene, I did ask a waitress if that person was always that rude, and she immediately gave me a strong YES! We stood around another 10 minutes while I looked around for another place, and we left. I find myself flabbergasted by the review Julie C gave to Brandy. Brandy must have been having a bad night or something but I even find that hard to believe. Me and my husband have literally followed her from the Boathouse to the Thirsty Sturgeon to Hoppies because we love her so much. And she always remembers our drink order...in fact one time our drinks were waiting at our table before we even sat down. To be perfectly honest I am not the biggest fan of Hoppies, but my husband loves it...especially Mexican night. Brandy makes us feel like we're eating with family instead of in a restaurant. I read many of Julie's negative reviews and found there are quite a few that revolve around specific servers. Seems to me that if every one around you are jerks, maybe its not them, maybe its you. I've never had a disappointing meal here. Really enjoy their mexican food on their menu, especially their cheese enchiladas. The salsa is also homemade and very flavorful. Their green chili sauce is very nice as well the new airport location makes fantastic pizza. Not much mexican on that menu, but go for the meat lovers pizza.
