    Cheers to vacay

We went out of convenience but will return because it was amazing! Jenny made us feel welcome and did an amazing job with service. The food was delicious we all want to return for the burgers. It's a bright and lively atmosphere.

We frequent Hoppies and partake in the Friday all you can eat whitefish or cod as we venture back to Topinabee very year or so. This year the cod was all you can eat, and was it as good as ever. The cod was nicely cooked just right with white flaky meat, not over cooked. We started with house Salads with homemade blue cheese that came with fresh chunks of cheese. Hoppies offers a wide assortment of beverages to include local breweries.

Shar was our server as she has been several other times we've dined here. She is attentive, friendly, and knows her stuff. As always, the food was amazing. My husband ordered the feature rainbow trout almandine and loved it. I ordered the feature 12 oz NY Strip with my shrooms. VERY flavorful and tender. My baked sweet potato side was amazing. The building is iconic northern Michigan and a must see. The interior, though interesting and full of character, is tired, dark, and even grungy. It needs a serious re-do and freshen-up. We will continue to dine here every chance we can and hope to see an upgrade on the decor.

Downside- prices were very high for the quality of the food ( we have some great steak restaurants in chicago so that's our comparison). I had the 6oz filet and my husband had the prime rib. Both were fine - not the best or worst we've had- but for $50 plus per entree I expect a nice piece of meat. The entree came with broccoli- overcooked mush- and choice of potato. I love baked sweet potatoes so that's what I ordered. It was tiny, maybe two inches, and when I cut it open it shrunk to half its size, like the turkey in National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation! The dinner salads are extra and $14 for the wedge. Not unusual for a steak house, but the wedge was an 8th of a head of lettuce. I had a vodka soda and my husband had coke. My husband ordered the strawberry shortcake for dessert and loved it but it was $24. The kitchen/chef needs to up their game. We have no problem spending over $200 on a great meal, but not the quality that we got. Sides/vegetables are not expensive and pretty easy to get right. Not sure why they are cutting corners. Glad we experienced it but would not go back. The place is worth seeing but just have a drink at the bar and skip the food. Not worth it.

The main issue was that we were really hungry, having spent hours waiting on auto repair. The brisket tacos did not satisfy but to alleviate hunger. The flour tortillas were what my sister called 'raw'. They were not heated at all. The brisket meat was lukewarm warm. The cabbage slaw was raw. There was a dab of chunky plastic jar salsa already placed in the middle of each taco. Chips and salsa: the salsa was in a very small plastic thimble. We couldn't even fit a chip into the salsa. The best part about our dinner: the server asked if everything was good. I told her that it was definitely not my favorite EVER. The wonderful thing about this was that she asked me to explain. She did not show an animosity and was truly inquisitive about our dislike of the food. She said that she would tell 'him'. I am assuming that 'he' would be the cook. I appreciated her concern because the bill was about $40 and when my sister can't finish her meal that's a problem. It was about 430 and I hadn't eaten all day so I did finish mine but I couldn't say that I was not pleased with it. Although nothing was spoiled and it certainly could've been worse. I don't know if I could trust going back. I think that they could do a real light marinade on the cabbage to soften it a bit and if they fried the tortillas and maybe offered corn or tortilla in the beginning, it would be an improvement. Or how about if the salsa so called and in such a tiny vessel, it wasn't tasteless but clearly store-bought. Any restaurant should be able to do something with this information. I don't mean to be negative or demeaning, but I do intend to given an honest review based on my impression. Good luck Breakers. I was actually very happy to see that something was open during this flooding season. Unfortunately, I would've driven 50 miles further to have a better dinner.

To place a carry out order, you must come inside and sit down at a table, then tell your server that you want to place a to go order. Lisa was helpful, told me the order would be out pretty quickly, and she brought me a glass of water for while I waited. I ordered the mackinaw burger with onion rings, and hot ham and cheese with fries. I also ordered a coconut cream pie and a Dutch cherry pie slice. All of this was to go, and she packed it up and brought me carry-bags for it. The coconut cream pie was good. The Dutch cherry was ok but, I have had better. The French fries were good--crispy and lightly seasoned. The onion rings were large and hot/fresh, but they are battered (I prefer breaded), and they are pretty greasy. The burger was nice sized and cooked well done, which I like. It came with cheese, lots of pickles, relish, lots of mustard, and just a little ketchup. The hot ham and cheese was okay. I chose white bread rather than rye or wheat. The bread was not special--seemed like white bread you'd buy at any grocery in a plastic wrapper. There's an up-charge for the onion rings. I say skip that and get the fries. For the 2 sandwiches, 1 with fries, one with onion rings, and 2 pieces of pie, my bill was $51.36 before any tip added on. I get that it's a short season up north here, so I expect everything to be a little pricey. If the burger had a bit of char and came on an upscale bun, if the hot ham and cheese came on a thicker toasted bread, I'd say ok. But for what we got, it was overpriced.

A medium rare cheeseburger is served well-done Server was very sweet, but not knowledgeable at all. (We really don't blame her at all) We asked about 3 different items, and she was honest about not trying any dishes, maybe new? Day one training should have given staff a taste of signature food so they have something to share with customers. It was also obvious she forgot to put our drink order in and took forever to bring it to us. The place has a great view of the river, but we were so let down after waiting so long to get in. So many spoke so highly of this place, we were really hoping it to be a great experience-but it's really nothing to brag about. We finally came by during mid-afternoon while it was pouring, minimal customers and service should have been on point, but it wasn't. I can't recommend this place at all.
