We stopped here while in the area and were pretty disappointed. It has the typical diner feel but the food was not to the quality we were expecting. We love diners and tend to always visit when we have the chance but this one would not be on our list of ones to return to. The service was also not great. Greeted by a friendly waitress who quickly brought me a cup of (strong) coffee, I settled in a booth by the window. Red Hut was a nice diner on Rt. 46 in Rockaway. The service was very prompt and the food was good. My father goes here on a regular basis and I wanted to check it out. We had breakfast, however as with most diners, you can literally go whenever you want and get whatever you want - that is what makes them great. I had an omelette and my father had french toast. The french toast looked amazing and I instantly realized I had made a mistake! The omelette was also pretty good with homefries and toast. Excellent service on a busy Mother's Day! The place was packed so we sat outside. It was quiet outside with only us and one other table. Inside was very busy. The specials menu had a variety of unique and delicious sounding items. Stuffed French toast was delicious and obviously freshly made. Burger was cooked to temperature and also freshly made. Went here for lunch. The service of the place was excellent. Our waitress Jennifer was on top of refills and everything. I ordered a BBQ Brisket sandwich with a side of mashed potatoes and coleslaw and an iced tea. The Brisket was dry and tough. It didn't have enough sauce on it. The waitress brought gravy for my mashed potatoes and I almost put it on my sandwich. The sandwich should've come with more BBQ sauce on the side. The sandwich should've been sloppy messy with BBQ sauce. The ambiance was not that of a typical diner. I will not be back for lunch except maybe to try breakfast. I went there on Friday to start kind of a bland diet prior to a medical procedure and only got two eggs over easy. I did not get home fries but I did get Rye toast when I got the bill it said $7.50 so I went upfront to pay the bill and I asked the gentleman is this right $7.50 for two eggs he said yes that's right I said you have to be kidding me I said I didn't even get any home Fries I said to $7.50 is ridiculous for two eggs. Then I asked if I can get a military discount being a veteran and he said no, that's the price so basically, I'm never going to the red hut diner in Rockaway again. I know it's a good place to stop, if my wife doesn't yell, "NOPE!" first. She didn't. We were greeted by a friendly lady as soon as we walked in and we were seated in a booth by a window. Very clean restaurant and a nice atmosphere. We had great service and some delicious comfort food. I had a Texas Burger (without the BBQ sauce) and my wife had some type of omelette. The epitome of a middle of the road diner. Good. But not great. It's one of those diners where when the cashier asks how was your meal you reply, fine. I have been to the Red Hut a couple of times now. Once for lunch. Once for breakfast. For lunch I had the Greek salad topped with grilled chicken. The greens were perhaps a little better than average. However, the chicken was slightly below average. Middle of the road like I said. For breakfast I ordered the Greek omelette which wasn't spectacular. It was overcooked and undersized compared to Greek omelettes I order from other diners. On a positive note, the coffee is excellent. The diner itself is very clean, tastefully decorated and inviting. The staff is friendly and the service is pretty fast. All in all, I would consider going back but I wouldn't go out of my way to do so. read more

Came here with my mom on a weeknight. Wasn't too busy which was good. I ordered one of their wraps which came with fries. My mom ordered a bowl of soup and some quesadillas off the appetizers. Denville Diner is super limited on options and when it's open. Red Hut is the more traditional diner. They have just about everything under the sun and they do it pretty well. The decor, especially the tile work and the wood ceiling rafters, were beautiful! The service was very friendly. The parking very easy. The food I would say was average. I had corned beef hash with eggs and my wife had a BLT. The hash was nothing special, not like the last place I reviewed. The food was ok. I was passing through Rockaway at lunch time and had no idea where to go. I try to avoid fast food if at all possible. By chance I noticed the Red Hut Diner and quickly turned into the parking lot. I had never been here, but diners are usually a safe bet for a familiar and reasonably decent meal, so I took a chance. My expectations where for an OK meal, nothing more. Really good diners are rare, but OK diners are plentiful. I was pleasantly surprised. It turned out that the Red Hut Diner was one of those really good diners. Having said that, my meal wasn't what I expected, and it was a little odd, but it tasted very good. If you go here be prepared for that. I ordered a Reuben Panini. It seemed like an interesting and appealing change from the usual toasted rye bread version I'm used to. Now keep in mind that paninis are usually served on ciabatta bread and made in a panini press, so you can imagine I was more than a bit surprised to get a Reuben Panini made with pita bread and made on a grill (not in a press). I honestly don't know if I would have ordered it if i knew this, but it turned out that what I didn't know worked in my favor. It was delicious. The bread was very fresh, and even though it was missing the tell-tale sear marks of a panini press, it was perfectly crispy on the outside and warm and fluffy on the inside. The corned beef was surprisingly juicy and cut thick. I had asked for extra thousand Island dressing and that the fries be made extra well done. I always ask for this at diners, and I almost always have to ask again when it doesn't happen. Here they got it right the first time. My father ordered a grilled cheese sandwich with bacon despite the fact that every time he orders it, he's usually disappointed. This time he thought it was great. He was also loved their coleslaw (coleslaw is serious business for my father). He even went so far as to ask how they made it, and was told about how they brine the cabbage overnight. I should also mention how friendly and accommodating our waitress was. In fact, everyone seemed very amiable. Sadly, I'm not in Rockaway very often, but I look forward to my next meal at the Red Hut Diner when I do return. read more

I never like to try a place when it first opens simply because it takes time to work out the bugs, have the servers learn the menu, get the staffing correct, etc. If I DO try a place early on I won't review it as I don't think it's fair and bad reviews can certainly have a negative impact. That said, the stars aligned last night and I was able to finally try the Red Hut Diner. In my opinion, when you're ttying a new diner there's only one way to go...and that's to order your personal 'staple.' So last night we did just that. I started with Matzoh ball soup and my daughter ordered the French onion soup. If you can't get these right you really have no hope. Well they're good on the soup because both were great...not too salty, just the right amount of flavor...though the matzoh needed a touch of pepper. For our meals I ordered a Grilled ham and swiss on rye, my kids had an egg breakfast (scrambled) and a Turkey Club, and Wifey ordered a Rueben panini. My simple sandwich was done perfectly, and they grilled the ham before putting it on the sandwich...just how I like it. Generous portion of eggs and the home fries were very good, though I like mine a little more well done. Turkey Club was just right with nice crispy bacon and my wife's panini included a generous portion of very nice corned beef and was actually a little too much food for her. Kudos on the coleslaw as well, a little soupy, but the flavor was great. Service was not an issue, manager came by to check on us, and the ambiance is nice for a diner. Plenty of parking, easy to get into and out of on a busy road. Also comes with lettuce, tomato, two onion rings, and the most amazing crunchy/crispy, possibly battered french fries. Simple food, but well-made and so satisfying on a late night (popped in around 12:40am on a Sat night; we were the last customers) Total: about 18 bucks for two. One thing I will note: their cheeseburger prices on the menu were off by about a dollar compared to how they were rung up.
