Used to come to this spot all the time, and decided to check it out after an ownership change. But just keep in mind, the parking situation here sucks and it so limited on the spaces. So if you can carpool, its ideal. Location wise, blink and you'll miss it because it in such an unassuming building on S Tacoma Way. I usually tell people to look for the Harkness Furniture sign on the opposit side. Because if you passed that, you've gone too far and if see Olympic Grovery and Mart off 66th, you've def passed it. Let's get to the food. Ordered the special combo C which has one black bean noodles (jajajangmyun), one spicy seafood noodle soup (jjambbong) and you choice of cream or spicy shrimp, we opted for the spicy. This set is $70 before taxes. We also ordered dumplings, and tbh, I can't even remember which one it is. Food was okay for what it is and price wise. To me, the jjambbong had a more clean taste than before if that makes any sense. The shrimp was meh, i think more because they left the shell on... Service was okay, not bad but not good. There seems to be confusion in explaining the different menu items too. Hence why i dont know what dumpings we got bevause we ordered the steam buns but the regular looking steamed dumpings came out instead and they said it was correct? And as other people stated, sometimes parties who come after you get served first for some reason. read more

Red Gem is one of my favorite local spots for Jajeongmyun (korean/chinese black bean noodle), which is popularly paired with sweet and sour pork! As of recently they JUST added a combo entree where you get both. Before they were separate so I love this option. Went here with my mom ordered a dish and the party that came after us ordered a different dish ours was ready first, but the waitress mistakenly gave it to the table across from us. I knew this because they said that this dish was different and they ordered beef instead of chicken. They also said they would eat it cause it taste good. The wage is then proceeded to go to the kitchen, bring out their correct dish and then bring out ours that was given to the other table. When I asked her if she gave our dish to the other table, she denied it but from watching what other customers were ordering that followed soon nobody ordered the same dishes so I knew she was lying. It's hard to find good old-fashion Korean-Chinese food when you're traveling. If you're from Orange County, CA, you know the spot in Garden Grove. The Red Gem had a similar vibe. Jjam Ppong's spicy level was good and seafood flavor was much better here compared to home. I think you can typically ask to raise the spicy level. The service could be better but it's typical for Korean place. When I walked in, the lady asked me what I wanted to order. No menu was was offered. I would've got more food but I get it. I've been wanting to try this place out for years. My sister mentioned that this was her go to place for Chinese/Korean fusion. I am definitely impressed. I love being able to support our businesses during COVID. Atmosphere: spacious, big enough to seat 20 people. Clean. Staff: Korean is their primary language, friendly if not a bit hurried. They had 4 calls within the 10 minute wait, while I was there. A testament to how tasty their food is. Foods: I am extremely picky about my Asian foods. I do not like overly fried anything. No need to fret, this place is worth it! Sweet and spicy chicken: this dish was delicious, each bite was perfectly fried, with their signature dipping sauce on the side. The sauce is different than most "authentic" Asian places. It had just the right amount of tang, (from pineapple chunks, I think). Their sweet and spicy pork was phenomenal! Perfectly seasoned, and you can actually taste the meat, with no need to drink copious amount of water afterwards. I ordered the Jiajiang myeon, with their spicy seafood soup. They have a combo for that. The black bean sauce for the noodles were absolutely divine, different than the Chinese version, but nevertheless DELICIOUS. Cons: Everything was hot and tasty, but my seafood soup had one mussel, and about two bites of octopus. I was hoping for more of seafood medley. One of the best places in Lakewood where they serve meals just the same way you can order it in Korea. I have never been let down and will admit that I need to come more frequently but the drive is a bit far for me. They have the black noodles and the sweet and sour pork that is sooooooo authentic. Well, Jajang noodle (back bean noodle) was pretty good, I ordered sea food flavored and my husband ordered mix with Jajang and Jampong pong ( black bean and spicy noodle). I just noticed the menu was different from previously posted on Yelp. Waitress lady told me they changed owner about a month ago, sorry for the glare on the menu. I also ordered sweet and sour pork and I like the fact sauce and separate when they brought the food. Separately seeping is way better. So far, I like the noodles and portions size was good and good flavor. When my dad and I came here, it was my glorious cheat day--I get to eat whatever unhealthy food I want! And I was craving for some Chinese inspired korean food--JJAJANGMEON!!!! However a lot of places I've tried sucked. So I turned to my very Korean dad for some advice and he claims there's one place that's pretty good but it's located deep down in Tacoma. Onwards to adventure...! So it's pretty deep in Tacoma but I could tell this place would be better than other restaurants that I've tried because the parking lot was full! Like, packed. The place is like a hole in the wall- kinda dirty and old but hey, those are the places that have some good food. The prices were cheaper than other places. We ordered seafood gan jjajangmeon (seafood black bean noodles), shrimp fried rice and seafood jjampong (spicy seafood noodles). I asked if they can make fried egg and we will pay extra for it (because in Korea, they put fried egg on top of jjajangmeon--Busan style) but they said they don't do that. Uh, ok I guess you don't want extra money. So they're not so flexible with their menu. The ddakgwang (pickled radish) and onion with black bean paste comes out first as a side (it's delicious) and our food finally came. Holy moly they hook you up if you order fried rice! They were generous and gave us a huge plate of it (eventually we couldn't finish it) I had my black bean paste and it was way better than the other restaurants hands down! My dad's jjampong was pretty good as well. Fried rice was delicious! They hook you up with huge shrimp and other seafood in the noodle! The only downside is their service kinda sucked. My dad asked for more onions on the side but they never came with it. Yes, I know that they're busy but still, they never came and checked on us. The sauce is yellow vs red and I like the flavor of the sauce better. This place is out of the way for me but Im glad I tried it. The noodles had plenty of black bean sauce but could use some mire zucchini and meat and the sweet and sour pork was cut in good size pieces and were crispy. The outside of this place doesn't look so hot, but first impressions are often wrong. We arrived around 1:30pm and shortly after the place started to fill up! It seems like a pretty popular spot. Red Gem definitely has some great food! Hubby and I ordered the Jjajangmyeon and Jjamppong and it was tasty. We've tried a few Korean-Chinese restaurants around the Federal Way/Tacoma area and they've all been pretty crappy, but this place was definitely a hit. The prices are very reasonable as well. The jjajangmyeon cost $7.99 and the jjampong was $9.99 and the portions were a good size. We finished our bowls and were quite stuffed afterward. We'll definitely be coming back! read more

This used to be the best JJa Jang Myun spot in all of western Wa. I drove from renton to the sketchy part of T-Town just for JJa Jang Myun, and now it's ruined. They made my Gan Jja Jang myun with chicken... who da fuck makes Jja Jang myun with fuckin chicken!!! Apparently they swapped cooks... but dyam... chicken???!!! Hands down, the absolute worst General Tsao's chicken I've ever had the displeasure of choking down. It's like taking a cheeseburger and calling it a pizza. They use this nasty red sauce, and drench over cooked, ridiculously chewy chicken with. It's run by koreans, just like every asian restaurant in Tacoma. Their Jombo (probably spelled wrong), soup is very overpriced, and mostly filled with strips of over cooked beef, and a few strips of squid. Eating this General Tsao's chicken is truly torturous.
