T H A N K S G I V I N G Dinner - Superb We dined at Red Fish Hilton Head (one of our favorites HHI restaurants) for Thanksgiving dinner and it was a total success. We arrived early, parking was plentiful, and decided the enjoy cocktails at the bar before we were seated. Red Fish's house red (Bonanza) is very good, smooth, and wonderful flavors. Red Fish's Thanksgiving dinner is prix fixe ($78 for adults and $30 for kids) and a terrific value based on the large portions. We ordered our favorite white Viognier (Miner) for dinner. First course; Oysters Savannah (4 huge stuffed very filling oysters with shrimp, crab meat, bacon, and cheddar cheese) and Jumbo Lump Crab Cake with charred salsa and Chipotle ranch - delicious. Second course; Autumn mixed greens salad with cranberries, pears, pumpkin seeds, and balsamic vinegar. Third course; Fresh roasted free range turkey with pan roast giblet gravy and Roast Black Angus Prime Rib with au jus and horseradish cream - both delicious and flavorful. All dinner entrees came with ALL the following sides; homemade Jalapeno cornbread (yum), French beans almondine, whipped Yukon potatoes, sage & sausage stuffing, and fennel roasted vegetables. Desert; Caramel Apple Cranberry Tart with brown sugar cinnamon ice cream - WOW! We were so stuffed we split the desert and took the other to go! The restaurant is very pretty. I loved the wine collection and a great wine list. The service was great. We had a very friendly server named Petey. Unfortunately where the restaurant fell short was with the food. All of our dishes were so very salty and over flavored. We sent the fries back because they were all too salty and they remade them and added salt again so we just said forget it and did not eat them. The lobster and crab burger had so much old bay seasoning that it took away from the flavor of the seafood and all that could be tasted was the old bay so it was not good. The lobster Mac and cheese was very very good. And the steakhouse burger was also very good. The grouper was good but the beans were tough and only salty. No real flavor. Broccolini was fine. I was very disappointed with taste of the food. Especially for the price point. Would not return because of this. read more

Pros: the atmosphere is nice and service was decent. Bread at start was highlight of the meal. Good wine selection and decent bourbon selection. Cons: everything was overly seasoned. Like big time. The fries are almost inedible. The grouper was decent but sitting in a salt sauce for the red peas. The shrimp and lobster burger was also heavily salted and bay seasoned. This place is not cheap ($30-45 per plate average) so you'd think they would do a better job showcasing fish and ingredients. Would definitely not go back. read more

I normally don't review restaurants because food is so subjective. But after reading the last two reviews, I felt compelled to. My resort highly recommended this place, and I was not disappointed. I had my eye on the the red snapper, their signature dish, but I couldn't resist the pistachio crusted halibut. I grew up eating halibut, and I have to say, I have never eaten halibut like this, so well prepared with a broad pasta prima vera, and it just melted in your mouth. It wasn't over spiced, salty or anything objectionable - it was simply mouth watering. I am not a wine drinker, but the pearfection cocktail was amazing. Service by Marissa was also excellent, live music - what more can you want. I don't like to speak for others, but the lobster/shimp burger got rave reviews, as did the sweet potato french fries. read more

We were disappointed -- quality's gone down since I last visited and service was subpar at best. My ahi tuna was drenched in an overly sweet sauce and didn't seem to be super fresh. Didn't help that we were seated at a tiny table and felt like the server was irritated if we asked her any questions. read more

NO BONES ABOUT IT, THE RIBS ARE OUTSTANDING -- my wife and I have eaten at Red Fish every time we've visited HHI in the last 15 plus years. To-date, I've always gone seafood: sea bass, grouper, salmon and scallops. Decided to mix it up and go for the rack of ribs (or should it read raaaaaaaack of ribs). It filled a very large oval dish. Despite the size, the ribs were perfectly cooked, moist, tender, fell right off the bone. The sides of slaw and blue cheese potato gratin were great too. Well done Red Fish, well done. PS -- took half the ribs home and ate them for lunch today. read more

A very pleasant, fairly casual restaurant to enjoy with friends and family. Outdoor seating is available. The food was generally excellent, particularly the seafood dishes. Live jazz music was very pleasant although distinctly loud. read more

Another excellent meal. The chef does not disappoint. Cornmeal Fried Oysters with a remoulade sauce that was memorable. Jennifer was our server and was very knowledgeable on the offerings and attentive. We usually try to sit on the porch but due to the rain sat inside where the decor is very nice. They have an extensive wine selection and found our new favorites with Sea-Sun by Caymus both the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The halibut special and the blackened grouper were both excellent. You need to try the Blue Cheese Gratin potatoes as a side. Reservations are recommended. read more

Last night out in Hilton Head and we wanted to try some local seafood. Looked up Red Fish and decided to go. First we called in and made a reservation and the hostess was pleasant. The ambiance was warm and inviting. They had live music and wine decorated the entire place, it's beautiful. The food was great. The Chilean sea bass was great, full of flavor. The scallops melted in our mouths. I would say this is more of an adult environment, would come back but not planning on bringing the kids here! read more

If you are into loud live music, this is the place for you! If not, skip it much better places. The music is so load no table talk. Menu is large but full of spicy offerings with cilantro in them. The menu doesn't represent the name of the restaurant. So we selected items from appetizer section. Lettuce wraps with meat balls very good. Fried oysters & coco shrimp both good. Nice seafood offerings-was very hot outside so we had to eat inside-if you wait until the sunsets it would be a nice ambiance outside-lights and vine covered deck. We shared a bowl of the tomato soup which is served with creme fraiche. I'm not a fan of tomato soup, however I thought it was very tasty My friend had the crabcakes with sweet potato fries, which she enjoyed very much. The crabcakes are made with bluefin crabs, so they taste different then Maryland crabcakes. I had the shrimp and grits which is topped with kale and breaded and fried okra. Wnt back to Redfish for the second time and while the food was good, it wasn't the 5 star experience we had on our first visit here. Last night we started with the blue crab dip which is served with tortilla chips & pressed cuban bread. The bread is extremely good with this dip - I prefer it over the tortilla chips. For our salads, hubs went with Caeser and I had the special salad - which was called the Orchard. It had apples, walnuts, dried berries and feta cheese over a spring mix. The dressing was good but not great. I selected one of the specials for my entree - parmesan crusted red snapper over pappardelle and roasted veggies in a butternut squash cream sauce. It was good but not excellent. Hubs went with the scallops which are served with lobster shrimp mac & cheese and asparagus w/prosciutto. He said the scallops were bland. I tasted the mac & cheese and would give it a 3.5. It was not as rich & creamy as I would have expected. Overall, the food was good and service was average...but for this type of restaurant I expect excellent food & great service. I would give them 3.5 stars for this visit but rounding up to 4 because they had live music last night, which was festive. Dinner for the 2 of us was around $146 (including tip) and we are doing "Dry January" so that included no alcohol! (Hubs had tea & I had Seltzer water.) We also skipped dessert. read more

It was my birthday and wanted to try a new restaurant (to us) with our best friends. We made a reservation and my husband noted in the comments about it being my birthday. The vibe in the restaurant was excellent! Soft lighting, piano playing in the background and wine everywhere!! We were sat in one of the back rooms by the kitchen and a big party of 12. A little disappointed but not critical. Our server was the issue. She comes rushing up to the table and immediately asks us what we wanted to drink. My husband said he wanted the salmon appetizer but she said "drinks first" she didn't greet us..tell us her name..engage in any kind of conversation. We were not in a hurry and wanted to enjoy our experience but Lacy had other plans I guess. The only reason we knew her name is because we had to ask her! She knew it was my birthday but didn't mention it..nor bring me a little dessert to celebrate. Very rude! Now the good part! The food was excellent!! We had to smoked salmon appetizer and their calamari. Both amazing. I ordered the filet which was 8 ounces and cooked to perfection. My husband ordered the scallops which were also delicious. We will be coming back but will specify not to be seated in Lacy's section!! She put a damper on my birthday dinner unfortunately. read more

Wednesday is the night to go! A fabulous band plays every Wednesday. And they are so great!! This same band plays in Savannah on the weekends. The music they play is so perfect for cocktails and dining with friends. We were seated in the other room and could hear them clearly while still being able to talk amongst ourselves. This is my second time dining here and the food was consistently delicious and cooked to perfection. I've had seafood and steak during a prior visit. I can confirm both are worthy of the price point. This time the vegetable strudel caught my eye (Boursin cheese always does). My boyfriend had the broccoli and cheese soup with the wedge salad. Because it was our anniversary they gifted us a key lime pie so we also ordered the dessert of the day. Everything was spot on to expectation. Service is always wonderful. As is the ambiance and atmosphere. I would say the back room felt a little less intimate then the front rooms, but happy they have the extra seating. Opting for an outside venue, we selected Red Fish, which has a very attractive deck, plantings, white table cloths and is sufficiently away from the road to feel like a fairly quiet spot. However the deck is very warm in the early evening hours, and there is no sea breeze to cool you down. It's a moderately expensive restaurant, with many entrees running from $32 to $38+. We're always willing to pay the price for a great dining experience, but these restaurants need to elevate their game sufficiently to achieve a good value. On this Friday evening we ordered: * Cold Cucumber & Avocado Soup du Jour $8.00 * Shrimp and Grits $32.00: Creamy boursin grits, smoked sausage creole sauce, kale and crispy okra * Vegetable Strudel $24.00: Boursin cheese and balsamic roasted vegetables baked in a phyllo crust, asparagus, red pepper jam The soup was the best dish of the evening, cold and thick, creamy and nicely seasoned. On a warm evening, this was a perfect choice and a really well executed dish. Unfortunately, the entrees didn't keep pace with this fantastic soup. The grits were delicious but the shrimp was undercooked. The quantity of shrimp was substantial, but they were much too translucent for my palate. I expect there to be some pink in the shrimp, when it's overly translucent, the texture is mushy and unappealing, and that's what happened with this dish (we don't like to send dishes back and wait for a rebound plate). The vegetable strudel was a very large dinner, much heavier than expected. It was tasty albeit very sweet. My co-diner expected something lighter and more elegant, though if you like heavy and sweet, this might be the dish for you. Dinner cost $110 for one soup, two entrées and a glass of wine for each of us, which would have been fine if we enjoyed the dinners more. The service was very good until it came time to get our check, which took a while. I wish more restaurants would move to pay-at-the-table solutions. These are really common in Europe, faster and more efficient for everyone. They allow the waitstaff to bring a check to the table, along with a mobile payment device, and the transaction takes about 15 seconds. This was our first visit to Red Fish, and it could have been an anomaly, as some Yelpers have provided very good reviews. read more

Great place for an awesome meal. We were seated promptly for our reservation and started with cocktails. The bread that came out next, just knocked my socks off...ok, old terminology! It was spectacular...and served with yummy butter and chimichurri sauce. Fried calamari appy was great and served with 2 dipping sauces. Meals were nicely spaced from appy...bf got the steak burger with truffle fries. Burger was amazing...fries a bit soggy. I got their signature sea bass. Fish was perfect. Sides were nothing to write home about...ha. Another antiquated saying. We had to take a break, but finished the night with a scrumptious piece of carrot cake, coffee and after dinner cordial. Came here on our first night in Hilton head thanks to Yelp and open table. It was high of 79 today so sitting outside was so pleasant and picturesque! So many great things about this place! First, because they also sell wine, you can buy a bottle and pay a $10 corkage fee. Had a great Napa cab we hadn't tried before. Service was great as was the food with generous portions. We had the fried oyster special, strawberry salad special, Chilean sea bass and scallops that came with lobster/shrimp Mac and cheese that was amazing! Everything was delicious. Best of all, they had live music on Wednesday night so we took our leftover wine and sat on a bench listening to really wonderful jazz. Place was packed--regulars come every year when they do Hilton head to hear the music and eat the great food! So glad we found this place. read more

My wife enjoyed a perfectly cooked NY Strip, and we shared a delicious slice of Key Lime Pie for dessert. Service was outstanding throughout our visit, and our server did a fabulous job helping us navigate the restaurant's almost overwhelming selection of wine. We settled on a fabulous Russian River Pinot, and took note of more than a few other bottles we plan to try on future visits. The bar also offers a wide selection of cocktails, and looks like an ideal spot to drop in for an intimate drink, even if you're not having dinner. We loved this place! I have nothing but great things to say about our experience. Unfortunately we went on a rainy night, so we couldn't sit on their beautiful patio. There was a 3 piece band playing in the bar area. They were playing James Taylor kind of music and were really good. We sat in the main dining room but could hear them at a great volume during our entire meal. We had some wonderful salads to start. I had salmon for an entree and it was so good. The hash it came served on was full of great vegetables. At our table we also had lettuce wraps, fried oysters, and a Caesar salad modified with a huge amount of grilled chicken. They had an extensive wine list. The dining room had a warm vibe to it, which we loved. Our server Betsy was super friendly and attentive. I'd definitely recommend going! read more

Red Fish is a family fave. We go each year for our last night in Hilton Head. The Blue Crab dip is our favorite appetizer. I really like the scallops with lobster Mac n cheese. My husband always gets the lobster shrimp burger. Our grown kids tend to mix up their orders, but always seem to like their food.
