In an area that has a winery on every corner, the Red Eagle Distillery is a nice change of pace. The building appears to be a remodeled barn. The mixologists can expertly make a nice variety of adult beverages, and they do it with a smile. This was the biggest disappointment of my Geneva on the Lake trip! We came to the restaurant next door, wanting some lunch, but we had a half hour to kill before it opened, so we went over to the Red Eagle Distillery. Not a soul was in there, but that was okay, it was like noon, so that's understandable. The atmosphere was nice and cozy. Lots of small tables. The bartender was friendly enough. She informed us that the restaurant didn't serve food in Mondays. That was extremely disappointing because we were starved. But it was confusing why it would still be open on Mondays, just without food. Weird. Anyway, we were excited to try some bourbon Christmas cocktails, since this was a distillery. Again, a disappointment. Almost every cocktail was a vodka cocktail. Bummer! Not a big fan of vodka. Not of the cocktails seemed very appealing, but my husband and I both felt awkward, so we each got a different cocktail. They were both undrinkable. Seriously, yuck! We are both not picky, and are very easy to please. But they were not good. Then I asked to use the bathroom. And THEY DONT HAVE A BATHROOM. It's in a barn across a field. What? I felt like I was in some kind of PUNK'D, but alas, no Ashton came out of hiding. I absolutely do not recommend if you enjoy fine cocktails and/or anticipate needing a bathroom. I know Madison/Geneva is well know for their wines around the area. This place is a place we've been to 3 times in the last 2 years and we will continue to visit it! Great atmosphere, simple concept lots of great beverages. When you walk in, you can first grab a table before walking up to the bar for drink orders. No tabs, just pay at the bar and bring it to your table. We just enjoy sitting there and getting lost in the conversation or just enjoy watching the room. Most places close early around here and this place will stop serving around 9:30pm on Friday/Saturday. At least that's what we saw this night. Cocktails are great, they also mix it up per the season. I set out to try every item on their intriguing drink menu, that starts off with the "Dirty Hoe" but was only successful in tasting four. Although it was a fail for me, I find no loss for the Red Eagle Distillery. A beautiful repurposed barn sets a rustic atmosphere and the friendly bartender made us feel welcome. The bathrooms are outside, around the back of the distillery in a separate little building. This was no problem for us that day but I can imagine would be daunting if the weather conditions were unfavorable. read more

Cool space that had potential for greatness! The drinks were creative and good, priced a little high, but the place was filthy. They were busy cause it was saturday but there was not a soul maintaining the tables. We walked in and found a table and were there for an hour without anyone clearing it off from the prior guests, and they had poured their drinks into their paper food dishes. It was disgusting. Stopped in for a cocktail on Saturday, we didn't even know about this place. We were driving by and saw it and decided to try it. The place has a relaxing ambiance we only had 1 cocktail but they were good and our total was $20 for 2 drinks. I had a vodka soda with their vodka which is made from Concord grapes, I will say I was pleasantly surprised with the flavor of the vodka. I contemplated purchasing a bottle to go but didn't like the price of $27 for a 750ml bottle. Hubby got a bourbon sweet tea, which was made with Four Roses yellow label and sweet tea. The drink was good and had a heavy pour of bourbon which justified the $10 price tags for a relatively inexpensive bourbon. Overall a cute quiet place to sit and relax for a drink or 2. read more

After my visit to South River Winery - I had to stop next door for a visit to their sister operation - Red Eagle Distillery! Again, it was a cool, overcast Tuesday afternoon - not primetime visitation for many folks - I was the only customer at about 2:30 pm in the afternoon. The inside of the building is gorgeous! Lots of old, stained woods - absolutely magnificent! You get to select 4 spirits to taste out of the 5 available. I tasted the Bourbon, Rye Whiskey, Vodka and Red Maple spirit. All were enjoyable - I especially enjoyed their vodka. They have an impressive small distillation area in the back corner - including a very tall recovery tower. One of the tallest I have seen! I asked a lot of questions about the distillery of the young lady who was manning the tasting counter. She answered all of my questions - but she was not very friendly about it. It felt like I was interrupting her doing a whole lot of nothing. I'll give her the benefit of the doubt and chalk it up to not having a good day - but still - you need to be a little friendlier to your customers. They also offer a range of beers for those who don't like spirits. Overall, a good distillery and very nice spirits! Came here and wasn't overly impressed. We had a few cocktails and I tasted most of their spirits as well. The cocktails were very good, which upped my rating, but the straight spirits did not impress me. The bourbon and rye both tasted like some impurities remained, or they just weren't as smooth as my normal go-tos. The other spirits did not stand out enough to create any desire to return. The straight liquor is below average. The cocktails are solid and will be enjoyed. If you need a break from wine, worth a stop. Personally, I like the liquor in my cocktails to be something that I enjoy straight as well. read more

This is one of my favorite places in wine country, and wine drinkers beware. This is a bourbon and rye distillery! The 1800's barn has been restored and it's beautiful. The menu includes the above brews, summer and winter cocktails, and a few craft beers. We had a pineapple vodka smoothie-like drink that was outstanding. In nice weather you can sit on the patio and get a visit from the cat. The inside drinking area is very nice. I'm not sure if they have food. When finished take a walk through the vineyards to a nearby winery. The scenery is beautiful. read more

Our first experience with the Ice Wine Trail tour and the distillery was on our stop today. Cute place, however, the service was not up to par. It took the bar tender a very long time to acknowledge us. ( There were literally 6 people total in the place) never said, hello, welcome in, I will be right with you, nothing. She poured our drink, we had NO IDEA what was in the drink and served us a taco that looked delicious. We had NO idea what was in the taco/what it was made of. When it was time to leave there was no customers at the bar and she didn't acknowledge us. It was sad to be treated this way as we have had a great experience on the Ice Wine Trail. This place has a lot to offer. Charming atmosphere serving some delicious cocktails and friendly wait staff! The distillery makes is own bourbon and vodka. The bourbon is somewhat harsh just on it's own. But put it in one of their signature cocktails and it becomes amazing. They have about 6 signature cocktails to choose ranging from $8 -$10. I enjoyed coming here during an ice wine trail with my wife. The inside was a neat combination of seating, bar, and distillery equipment. They for sure made use of every bit of space so much so that the restrooms are truly an outhouse a short work down the path. During our trip we tried one of their signature drinks that was mixed with some ice wine and bourbon. The drink was solid and included a souvenir glass. It didn't take long for it to get crowded inside and so we decided to move on. The coziness inside probably benefits the overall atmosphere of the place making it easy to strike up conversation with strangers and have an interesting time. Would recommend stopping here for a sample if you're in the area, as well as South River Vineyards just a short drive (10 seconds) down the road. read more

I got the peppermint cocktail and it went down soo smooth. And then I had some of my Dad's pear bourbon drink, which was also delicious. My husband and I came here while on the ice wine trail. The distillery collaborated with South River Vineyards and created an ice wine cocktail with SRV ice wine and RED bourbon in a souvenir glass. When we walked inside, it reminded me of a place that could have been turned into a wedding reception venue however the barn itself is on the small side. There was a long bar extending one side of the bar while high top tables, low tables, and a sit up bar were scattered throughout the rest of the barn. It was evident that they do the distilling right on site as they had the tank on the main floor for people to look at. There was a stairwell leading to downstairs where product and distilling happen and was listed as employees only - again there was an area where you could look into the downstairs to get a feel for how the process occurs. My husband used the restrooms outback which were actually outhouses. This was not a highlight for him but it is good to be aware of if you are on the wine trail! Wineries themselves have flushing toilets and there are two in very close proximity to the distillery. read more

This is a cute little distillery surrounded by vineyards. It offers a nice respite if you become overwhelmed with wine. We visited the distillery in the midst of a wine tour and it was a lot of fun. The space so small but very cool. We loved the historic finishes and the country accents. There was not a lot of seating and it was very crowded. I would like to come back when it is warmer to see if there is additional seating. The area around it is very beautiful. They have a lot of really delicious cocktails available. Basic as I am, I tried the Pumpkin Spice Martini and it was ultra sugary but tasty. I don't think I could ever do more than one. Kevin ordered the Pear Nectar Martini and I got the Peppermint Cream Martini, both made with their house bourbon.....DELICIOUS!!! And I mean that! We also bought a bottle of the Rye Whiskey and Vodka to take home with us, but I suspect we will add a bottle of the bourbon before we leave. After visiting the winery next door, thought we'd make a quick stop into this distillery. Thankful they had signage and a large parking lot because it just looks like another red barn in the middle of the country. The bartender engaged us from the moment we walked in. She was friendly and was able to multitask, which can be a challenge for some bartenders, but not this one. She explained each of the liquors distilled in house: vodka, brandy, rye, bourbon, and rum. Hands down vodka and rum were excellent neat. The bourbon and rye were so earthy, it was like drinking hay (not an exaggeration!) Settled on a couple of cocktails: muddled blackberry lemonade made with vodka and an bourbon espresso martini. Both drinks were excellent! The bourbon tastes much better in a cocktail. Side note: vodka is made from grapes of the sister winery, South River vineyard. Prices were quite reasonable, drinks solid. Would patronize again! Knocked off one star for lack of ADA accessibility, the potentially dangerous step down into the bar area from the main seating, and having to walk outside to get to the detached restrooms. read more

They have an awesome assortment of drinks on the menu, something for everyone. Weird thing is that you can't order drinks with the actual bourbon that they make because of some law in Ohio that prohibits it. You can although do 2 tastings of the bourbon, which is great.
