a sign for natural grocery
Shane S.

The Red Barn is a solid Natural Food store in the lovely, funky, cool, and hip neighborhood aka the Whiteaker aka the Whit. I once ran a Mysore style Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga program in this neighborhood back in the day. The Red Barn not only sells a wide variety of produce including organic produce and bulk food items yet they have cool colorful natural material tote bags that I bought one here. There is a nice cafe in the back that serves both veg and non-veg food. Think sandwiches and smoothies. Kudos for having a couple of tables with chairs to enjoy your meal at. They have plenty of vegan options! I opted for a 16 ounce Spicy Mango smoothie. It was quite alright and had kale added to it. Staff here is friendly and like the atmosphere of the Red Barn. This is a solid option to stock up on groceries or a meal aka sandwich or smoothie if you find yourself in the Whit.

My lunch/dinner!
Stone Z.

Their house made banana chocolate chip vegan cookies are excellent! They've also got Oregon made hoagie bun subs pre packaged along with some house made sandwiches. I just made a quick trip to get some food but i strolled around a bit on the other aisles; lots of bulk buying, even with soap, and they sell all natural baggies and such. Tons of the all natural healthy for you type things, which is nice. I think the coolest thing is you can buy just one of any produce item. I tried my luck on a huge black fig they said was local and it was really good!

Sandwich and exploding kombucha
Jess M.

Bought a sandwich and komboucha for lunch. The komboucha exploded all over me and my coworkers when I opened. We are talking geiser level. Only about half the bottle was left after the incident. When I went back inside to try and recycle my bottle and told them what happened the response I got was "Oh yeah, that brand does that" Ok, maybe you shouldn't stock that brand then...(and it was a flip open top so you can't open it slowly like other brands). I was happy they had lots of vegetarian options though. The sandwich I got was pretty good, but it pre-made and not from their deli

Caper dill potato salad and green curry noodle salad.

The Deli has excellent food and menu unfortunately the service is very rude and unfriendly ... I think the owner should know about this

Great smoothies, good selection of groceries. May be a bit pricey but it's organic so I would rather pay extra

I do believe it is all vegetarian with heaps of vegan options. They have local produce and feel it is all organic. A wide variety of mushrooms and a great bulk section. The hot and cold bar are both phenomenal. My biggest grip is that when I lived here prior in years past the sandwiches were much better. I used to love the TLT aka tempeh lettuce tomato and reuben. Fast forward to the Summer of 2023 I ordered a pesto chick-unsandwich. I found it underwhelming. It was very dry and wasn't fresh. For $8.95 USD could have been much better. I also tried the Tempeh for another meal as I packed both for later. The Tempeh Reuben was only slightly better than the other sandwich. Both sandwiches were underwhelming and it is too bad they weren't as good as when I was last here. Pro tip: Go with the amazing salad bar and hot bar. Be sure to check the dates aka when the sandwich was made and best by date. Kiva aka natural food store downtown has sandwiches made to order. 4 stars for a one star reduction to the underwhelming sandwiches rounded up to 5 stars because Sundance is still one of my favorite natural food stores on Momma Earth for the friendly staff, folks who shop here, awesome store, and amazing salad bar and hot bar.

Parking is a little janky if you're not used to the area, but this grocery store is otherwise a hidden gem! It might be run of the mill for locals; I'm not sure if this is a large chain that's all over the place or if it's less common, but the produce, meat, and cheese departments blew me away. I just want to rave a bit about this particular section of the store - most everything else was similar to what your expect. I've never seen such a large selection of items in a grocery store deli before... it was honestly slightly overwhelming to pick just a few items to try. There are individually wrapped chunks of tons of different types of cheeses, dried meats and prepackaged ones, accoutrements like breadsticks, olives, mini jelly and jam jars, and more. It was amazing. The bakery case was a whole other story... I have the biggest sweet tooth and can't get enough of baked goods, and their displays were absolutely gorgeous. I unfortunately didn't purchase anything from this section, but I can only imagine it's delicious lol. Checking out was easy as it usually is when grocery shopping and the lady that helped me out was friendly, so I really had absolutely nothing to complain about during my extremely brief visit to this super cool store.

I've been here during different times and days and for me, the store is never overly crowded and I am always able to find close parking. The layout and spacing of the aisles is pretty roomy. I do miss the old Trader Joe's pricing. I get inflation happens, but for me, it's not as fun to go to trader joes and see prices go up to about a dollar for the things I usually get. Now i have to cut down shopping trips to once a week to either every other week or once every 3 weeks.

The frozen Chocolate Croissants are terrific, too... as long as you can avoid eating the whole box at one sitting, lol! The small single serving quiches are wonderful... and not overly expensive.

But other than that, it's a Safeway like most other Safeways--with the exception of the parking lot. It's terrible. If you enter from 18th, your inclination is to turn right at the first opportunity once you're in the lot but that's actually going the wrong way. It's so weird to me to find just about any parking lot with diagonal parking any longer since that's less efficient parking, but I guess maybe this lot is too old (a grocery has been here for over 60 years) and thus too small to have better parking. It's just annoying getting in and out, and it's tight to drive around, so it's not my favorite. But they have order pick up and that makes it worth a trip.
