ran in to grab a couple items for when i leave town and will be on the road for the next couple days. the vibe was friendly and it seemed like a neighborhood coop with competitive pricing on organic items. i noticed a lot of local brands and some more mainstream that you'd be able to find at probably most west coast natural grocers in other towns. what i mean by that is if you have dietary restrictions and are used to shopping elsewhere but stop in here, you'd probably feel right at home. it's a good place to know about! read more

The Red Barn is a solid Natural Food store in the lovely, funky, cool, and hip neighborhood aka the Whiteaker aka the Whit. I once ran a Mysore style Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga program in this neighborhood back in the day. The Red Barn not only sells a wide variety of produce including organic produce and bulk food items yet they have cool colorful natural material tote bags that I bought one here. There is a nice cafe in the back that serves both veg and non-veg food. Think sandwiches and smoothies. Kudos for having a couple of tables with chairs to enjoy your meal at. They have plenty of vegan options! I opted for a 16 ounce Spicy Mango smoothie. It was quite alright and had kale added to it. Staff here is friendly and like the atmosphere of the Red Barn. This is a solid option to stock up on groceries or a meal aka sandwich or smoothie if you find yourself in the Whit. read more

Their house made banana chocolate chip vegan cookies are excellent! They've also got Oregon made hoagie bun subs pre packaged along with some house made sandwiches. I just made a quick trip to get some food but i strolled around a bit on the other aisles; lots of bulk buying, even with soap, and they sell all natural baggies and such. Tons of the all natural healthy for you type things, which is nice. I think the coolest thing is you can buy just one of any produce item. I tried my luck on a huge black fig they said was local and it was really good! read more

We stopped in here a few weeks ago in the evening hungry, nothing sounded better than some hot soup. We had been a little under the weather, but still had appointments to be at around town, so we decided on soup. We hopped on trusty yelp. It brought us here. They sure did not disappoint. We both had the tomato basil soup, and we both had a sandwich with our soup. I honestly can't remember what he ordered, mine was a hot turkey, with pesto. Everything was delicious. I was going too order hot tea, I was so full, I decided against it. We also ordered a smoothie called the mixed tape. Oh em gee! Flavor explosion in your mouth. It was so delicious. I would go back just for the smoothies, the food, was very quality, and seemed like was made in house. I loved that. Would love to come back again, and enjoy another hot bowl of soup, sandwich, and smoothie. This place is a hidden gem. They have limited seating for places to eat, so if you can grab your food on the run, or eat in a timely manner so their tables, are not being taken over. This is an overpriced store trying to be fancy they do not honor their deals. Don't expect to pay the price that is posted when you get to the register. The clerk refused to honor the posted price on the soda, and called me a liar. I asked where something was and they just said, over there instead of showing me. The store used to be good but when the staff treats you like you are not a valued customer why come back? I just walked out without buying anything at all because of how they treated me. I want them to know that they lost my sale, about $35, to Whole Foods because of the way I was treated, and by the way, it was $23 at Whole foods for the same items, and a item added. When I get poor service and pay more, I am not likely to go back anytime soon. read more

The Whit used to be a very fun and friendly community but like most cool places the neighborhood changes when rents go up and people move to town. I think the staff at Red Barn are newbies to Eugene. I have never had such a poor shopping experience as I did recently. I came in to grab a few items for dinner and immediately a staffer, I think a manager was snapping at me to fix my face covering. No big deal. I messed with it and then looked at the sales shelf near the front door. I picked up a can of tomatoes and started going to the beverage area. She was following me down the isle. I'm not sure why she was so interested in me but I got the royal treatment. I picked out a juice and some cheeses and went to get some dry goods. There she was....creeping around the side (I could see her in my far peripheral vision). All I wanted to do was find a couple jars of food but felt like I was being treated like a criminal. I went to the counter and the lady was chatting w/ the cashier. I know they knew I was waiting to check out but it was as if I didn't exist. Whew this place. From any natural grocer you expect expensive, but this place is SO expensive. The vibes are very hippie, very pretentious for no reason. The smoothies are good, the food from the deli is average, and everyone has a pretty morose or just rude personality. They also get very busy very quickly, and the orders take a very long time to come out. But I will say again, the smoothies are very good, so check those out. read more

Bought a sandwich and komboucha for lunch. The komboucha exploded all over me and my coworkers when I opened. We are talking geiser level. Only about half the bottle was left after the incident. When I went back inside to try and recycle my bottle and told them what happened the response I got was "Oh yeah, that brand does that" Ok, maybe you shouldn't stock that brand then...(and it was a flip open top so you can't open it slowly like other brands). This is the cutest natural grocery store in the Whit, I'm walking distance to it; they have the freshest organic locally sourced produce and the staff is the friendliest you'll find in all Eugene. They have a nice Cafe area to have breakfast or lunch. Lots of parking too. read more

Sandwhich.....wow a must have. Came in and needed something healthy. Was amazed at the store and what is carried. Hit the deli and was overwhelmed. Many selections, def dont think one can go wrong with any thing. Got a sandwich with sprouts, red onions, avacado, hummus, and did the sesame shiitake tempeh. Way full of protein and so delicious. Does Red Barn take down payments? I feel my bank account cringing every time I set foot inside. Red Barn is super saturated with Eugenian hippie vibes - people in dreadlocks, Dr. Bronner's soap, house-made drinks that include "love" as an ingredient, prayer flags... you know what I mean. Yet it is so outrageously priced. I saw eggs that cost $8. Who can afford $8 eggs?! I only ever go in to pick up a couple snacks (nutritional yeast popcorn or Newman-Os) when I'm in the area, and to check out the damaged goods shelf. The stuff on the shelf is typically produce, although I've seen packaged products like wine and taco shells. Their discounted prices are what you'd be charged in a less cultured, perhaps "normal" grocery store. There's a bulk section, a deli, lots of beer, and shelves stuffed with organic brands of all kinds. The in-house stuff, e.g. Tree Frog Tonic, is really good, and the sandwiches are decent but (you guessed it) not cheap. Service is ok. Cashiers are friendly young adults in beanies. No problems there. I like to look at all the pretty packages but don't dare put any into my shopping basket. It's worth coming in to take a look and get some special items like local wildflower honey, although I would not recommend the average joe make it his/her regular stop for groceries. read more

Um, they have kombucha floats!!! Not only do they have kombucha on tap, but they have Coconut Bliss ice cream, to complete the kombucha float! It's awesome. This grocer has mainly local, organic, all-natural products. We stopped by here for some kombucha after seeing its sign that they had it on tap, and sat outside at one of the picnic tables on the balcony. This little Organic grocery store is quaint, and the closest store to my house (This I love). It is has great organic produce. I also like the sale staples once in awhile. The cosmetics, cleaners and soaps are always nice if you want to be kind to the environment. I would recommend making sure to check the dates on things if you are going to venture into the refrigerated section. It also has a great selection of good beer. read more

Thank goodness for the Red Barn, else I would feel completely cutoff from healthy food stores over here near River Road. Red Barn is just a few blocks off the bike path and they offer most of the staples for my kitchen, including a beautiful organic produce selection. They also see great juice that they bottle on site. Popular items seem to sell out quickly, though (Coconut Bliss Ice Cream!), often leaving bare shelves. I just moved here from Humboldt, so the hippy-dippy staff and the rando people talking to themselves outside make me feel right at home. read more

What a nice little natural grocery! They have a good selection, and the staff has been sweet and helpful every time I've been in. The prices aren't cheap, but that's to be expected from a tiny corner grocer. I'm willing to pay a little more for convenience and quality, and they aren't exorbitant. If you want to get a glimpse of what this neighborhood is all about, just come to the Red Barn; you will find an amalgam of the typical folks that reside in the Whit. They sell a lot of great fresh local produce, local beer and their deli food is pretty good. While the bulk section is great, I do feel like it lacks a little. Also, They do carry some meat however, I wish they carried just a little more. I don't typically do my weekly shopping here, I mostly pop in when I need a few things and don't want to drive to get them. All in all, this place is pretty darn good. I just love this place. I discovered it by accident one day. Eugene has a plethora of health food store choices and the Red Barn seems to go out of it's way to hire super friendly people. Prices are on par with small stores but the vibe is great. The also have a coffee bar in the back with small amount of seating. There's a lot to love about the Red Barn Natural Grocery. I wish I could say I loved the bakery and smoothies, but today was the third time that I tried to come in and order some lunch. 3 staff in the area, one eating, one preparing food, and one stacking snacks on the counter. I stood there for five minutes and was not acknowledged. This happens every time I go in! Genuinely confused, I asked, "Do I order here, or...?" "Everyone is busy doing other things... they'll get to you when they can." was the answer. All it takes is a quick, "Someone will be right with you" or "Hi! Be there in a minute" to keep a customer at the counter so you can earn a tip and make a sale. I gave up today and grabbed some fruit to eat. I wanted to spend a lot more money at a local business and have a delicious lunch. I want to bring out of town friends here, but I completely give up on the Red Barn deli. You guys made me feel bad about wasting my time here again, and your staff made me feel unwelcome. I'll just go to all the other neighborhood places now. read more

I just have to balance out the original review... This is a great small local grocery! It's a wonderful gem of the Whiteaker neighborhood. It has a good selection of bulk goods, produce, wine/beer, staples, and a small deli. Sure it is a bit small and doesn't have EVERYTHING but my experiences with the staff have been pretty good. I've lived all around but Eugene is home and the small neighborhood groceries like the Red Barn are an essential piece of what makes it such a great place. If it's true that's it's owner is a "yuppie" "from California" (nice labeling and discrimination!) then I ask the original poster... where else would you shop in Eugene that is 100% local, there are some spots but not IN the neighborhoods like Red Barn. The venerable Red Barn is open late and has great produce... ...that no one who lives in the neighborhood can afford. I don't live there anymore, but used to make the trek across town. Now the place has some yuppie owner from California, a website, and all the other things that I would've sneered at when I used to buy my avocados there back in the day. An "ice cream" bar featuring a truly atrocious gooey coconut concoction that the ancient freezer can't keep frozen is just one of the things that makes me shudder here. The unwashed, generally unhelpful staff is another. Cut and clean your fingernails and wash your hands before you handle my food, already - I am seriously not kidding - and please take home some Dr. Bronner's soap and take a shower! Plus, stop putting a chain across the exit. It's not only insulting to those of us who aren't shoplifting (as are the rude little reminder signs distributed throughout the store), it's a fire hazard. I know that sounds unkind, and I don't mean it that way, but for the prices the Barn charges these days, it should have valet parking - I don't think a minimal level of cleanliness and service is a lot to ask. The money clearly all goes into the owner's pocket, and not into fresh inventory (rotten cheese, stale bulk goods, and freezer-burned frozen foods are regular staples at the Barn), nor into employee salaries. Finally, one might think that a "natural grocery" would be green enough to encourage can and bottle return, but the Red Barn staff seems to think they're too good to handle this chore, and sometimes flat-out refuses to process returns, even though the corresponding products are still in stock. If you must have fresh fruits and vegetables in the 'Hood, well...you really should make a trip up to 8th and Van Buren, and visit the nice people at New Frontier. They have competitive food at much better prices, and the people are charmingly funky, instead of just funky. For shame. I used to love this place, and was one of its earliest customers. Another Eugene institution screwed up by uncaring out-of-town ownership. Only the glory of fresh, local organic produce saves Red Barn from the ignominy of a single star. ----- In response to fellow reviewer Shane, I offer the following thoughts: I have nothing against those who have migrated to Oregon from California, but it saddens me when they (or others) purchase cherished local establishments and ruin them. I'm not hating on the Red Barn, I just don't love the current version as much as the old one. Nobody much likes it when others exploit their cultural heritage just to make a buck. Ask any Hawaiian if you're having trouble with this concept. Second, there are quite a few independent natural food stores here in Eugene which have retained local values, local ownership, and local vibe far better than the Red Barn. Among them are New Frontier (8th and Van Buren - still more or less in the neighborhood), Sundance, and of course the Kiva...and then there's Lane County Farmers Market, which might be the coolest place of all to get local produce. read more

They are a small natural foods market in the heart of the Whiteaker neighborhood and are all about supporting the local community. They have a small produce section, snacks, skin care, refrigerated section and a small frozen section. They even have beer, wine and a deli! They are always friendly when I stop in and are eager to help you find what you are looking for. A few months ago I remembered their deli where I got a bagel and cream cheese and decided to get a sandwich. They make such tasty, hearty sandwiches that are well worth the price and made with care. You can even call in your order if you want to just swing by and pick it up at lunch time. They have coffee drinks, smoothies and even ice cream in their deli so don't forget to check it out. Their prices are on point for a natural foods store, you can't expect the same prices you would get at a Winco but you can expect better quality and know you are supporting local when you shop here. read more

Oh Red Barn, how you keep me cool on a summer's night with great bubblies and coconut bliss! The red barn is located in the whiteaker and is by far the most vegan friendly of our natural markets. They're small, but mighty. I once got picked up by a pirate there and had the time of my life walking to the rose garden drinking beers. You never know what can happen at the red barn!
