What a wonderful stop on our way home from Branson. The food was hot, fresh, home made and delicious! The burger was made from freshly ground beef on a homemade bun. Had several choices of sides. I hade the homemade potato chips which exceeded my expectations. My daughter had the Susie Qs which we are realizing must be a Missouri featured side. Those curly fries were freshly made from potatoes not frozen! My husband had the open face roast beef sandwich. Texas toast topped with layer upon layer of roast beef, home made mashed potatoes with skins and then topped with brown gravy. Service was great. Sarah was attentive and helpful in making our choices. Wish we had saved room for dessert because their dessert case looked very enticing. We almost didn't come here because of the posted 3pm closing time on Sunday. However, the buffet was still well stocked at 1:40pm, and the waitress said they're actually open until 8pm. The sign on the door does say 3pm. I'm not sure if they're always open until 8 or just today. You might want to call ahead if you're not sure. The buffet was small, but we liked everything they had. The stars of the show were the fried chicken and the mashed potatoes with pepper gravy. The small salad bar had plenty of fresh ingredients, and we enjoyed the dinner rolls and cornbread. Neither of us were big fans of their peach cobbler or bread pudding, but the vanilla ice cream was good by itself. My wife had a second helping of potatoes and gravy for her dessert. I went to the Red Barn Cafe & Hen House Bakery for breakfast on a Saturday morning. The food was pretty run of the mill but the service was seriously lacking. They offer a buffet but I chose to order off the menu. Each item arrived separately with the coffee being the very last thing delivered. Customers would stand around the register waiting for an employee so that they could pay and get on with the day. The only saving grace of this place was their humonungus sticky rolls. If I go back, I would stick to that and a coffee. read more

Our family had about an hour to kill before Forever Young show next door. We each ordered chicken nachos, fish tacos and a cheese burger. Waitress had no urgency. Our food took over 20 minutes to arrive and my fish tacos weren't done. We literally had 5 minutes to eat and got the rest boxed up. Their pies looked good and we're $1.99 a slice the day/night we were there. The nachos seemed like sliced American cheese was microwaved on and kinda gross. The fish tacos were very good surprisingly but had a lot of shredded cheese on them which I took some off. These were fairly cheap at $1.50 each. This place looks more like a bakery/ pie place. I believe the waitresses also cooked as it was so slooooooow to get the simplest order and it was dead inside. Go if there is no urgency. read more

Them pies, oh my! If you just stop here for a huge slice of pie and coffee consider it well worth the gas. But, you should really have a breakfast or lunch here with pie for dessert! As with any business. . . You get new management and they have to change what works. The dinner buffet is only open a few nights a week. And, there is much less to choose from. No salad bar. We loved the chicken and dumplings. And from the way it looked so did a lot of other people. They no longer serve them. The breakfast buffet is really slim! They put the giant cinnamon rolls on the buffet. They are so dried out you can not swallow them. At least the pie is still good. This is one of my favorite meals I've ever had. I had monte cristo sandwich. It was ham and Swiss inside dough, and deep fried, topped with powdered sugar, served with jalapeño jelly. Don't miss out on the jelly. Amazing. Also, I tried the coconut meringue pie, and chocolate meringue pie, along with the raspberry cake. Out of the three, the cake was my favorite. Usually I prefer pies, however, the cake was exceptional. The homemade raspberry jelly on it was great. I took my order to go. This place is packed. Yelp usually helps us pick locally owned places in the towns we visit. This one was a fail. I ordered a chicken and waffle...waffle maker was broken. My husband ordered a baked potato...after the food was delivered, we were told they were out of baked potatoes...although the table that came in after us got a potato a couple of minutes later. The substitute fries were grossly undercooked. Service: our waitress was on her 2nd day. But gracious, even with the grace we tried to give her, it wasn't very good. Stopped here for lunch today while traveling and asked for all of our fried foods to be extra crunchy and brown. They did it. We stopped in on our way to Nashville and Wow! Looks are deceiving, because the building is so humble you can easily pass it by, but the food was GREAT! We had breakfast and literally ate like truck drivers. The chicken fried steak is hand-made (I actually heard the owner tenderizing it in the kitchen). The eggs were fresh and even the gravy is made from scratch. Definitely a good place to eat! Wow! This hidden gem is loaded with scrumptious down home goodness. Sunday buffet reminded me of my grandmother's cooking. We did indeed try the honey butter and cornbread which was worthy of a great dessert, but I couldn't resist the divinely inspired Chocolate Pie which rivaled any dessert I've seen. This place was awesome. It is not too far off the freeway. I definitely recommend stopping by, you will be amazed. First thing we saw when we entered was the buffet style salad bar and lunch bar and dessert refrigerator. The staff was very friendly and seated us immediately. Drinks were accompanied with bread and sweat butter. We had the lunch special that consisted of three choices Country fried steak, Pork or chicken fried chicken. Accompanying each selection was mashed potatoes with gravy, beans and the salad/soup bar. The salad/soup bar had a pretty decent selection of items for a salad along with a few different salads (pasta, potato, broccoli and another pasta variant). There were three available soups. I had the bean and bacon soup which was fabulous. It was not too salty and had a good amount of bacon mixed in with the beans. The main course was a coated in white gravy on the fried item and the potatoes. The beans were in a separate bowl on the plate. Overall the meal was delicious. Very much comfort food that had a wonderful taste. We completed the meal with very difficult dessert selection. We selected the cinnamon bun, raspberry cheesecake and coconut meringue pie. All selections were phenomenal. The cinnamon bun was at least 6 inches by 6 inches, it was huge. The meringue was the biggest I had ever seen, at least 8 inches in height from the top of the meringue to the bottom of the pie. All selection tasted great. If we are ever in the area again, we will return. read more

a local dining Cafe that has meringue pies with the meringue about 6 inches or close to it. It's the tallest meringue I've ever seen. And it was delicious. We had the salmon with wild rice and they were fantastic. the salmon was crispy tender and perfectly cooked on a bed of wild rice that was also cooked perfectly. It came with a salad with a strawberry dressing. I didn't try the dressing but the salad was also good. the banana bread that they were selling loaves of however was not done all the way through. This place USED to be on our A list on road trips through the area. However, it seems that the ownership has changed and they have gravely underestimated the changes they've made. We used to drool at the thought of that plate of chicken fried chicken with generous, thick, and crispy filets with mashed potatoes and gravy, so tender that a knife wasn't necessary. Apparently those days are gone and we will have to find another favorite place. Sad, sad, sad. The last time we stopped in, we were presented with thin, tough and stingy servings. Other changes had been made to the salad bar and buffet operations which were just downright foolish.
