Not gonna lie, we weren't sure what to expect with a randomly selected coffee shop in Mount Vernon, but were pleasantly surprised. The inside is beautiful and smelled amazing. We both got an iced latte. The espresso was rich and smooth. The brownie was honestly really dry, but the gooey bar was so good. The service was pleasant, but not overly friendly. Adorable coffee shop that was my wakeup "office" for the morning, arriving at around 6:30 and not leaving until nearly 9:00. Two great cups of drip coffee got me going and I enjoyed powering my laptop and phone while writing a few Yelp reviews. This is larger on the inside than it looks with several different spaces and chair setups throughout. I found a comfy table in one of the back areas where I could still see to the register but it was quiet. A steady flow of customers coming and going. And I can see why. This is a neat little space! Fantastic Coffee. I had my usual iced mocha. Keen Bean's mocha was excellent. Prominent coffee flavor at the beginning of the drink that was not overwhelmed by the chocolate or over diluted by the milk. The flavor lasted until the last sip. After a week of gas station and hotel coffee on the road I just needed a good cup of Joe. Best latte I have ever had. Delicious! Just the right amount of foam and flavor. Prices are unbelievable compared to other roasters. The menu was easy to read and all the prices seemed very reasonable. The atmosphere was very laid back with lots of private little nooks or bigger tables. Too bad we had to get back on the road. This place is ADORABLE. Their lattes are great. Their brownies are delicious. The whole place is clean and inviting. The staff are super-friendly. It's close to the interstate so one loses very little time coming here, especially if you just take the business route 44 through town. They have a drive-through window, but why not come in and get out of the car for a moment? It's well worth stopping here instead of some chain place in a bigger town nearby. I tried to take some pictures but a photo just can't do it justice. A warning though: NOT open on Sundays - At least not during the "off" season. We were going to the Red Barn but chose the Keen Been hoping we could avoid adding to the already terrible scents that come with road trips. We ordered two wraps and the antipasto platter. Both wraps were filling and the platter had a secret sauce that balanced the salty goodness of olives, feta and tomatoe. They have shaded outdoor seating with ceiling fans. Also have a drive-thru where you're greeted with the 'howdy' we midwesterners love. If I was a local it would be a great spot for a meeting or get together. read more

First time at the 'Bean'. Easy to navigate menu. Mostly way to eat salads and finger foods. Salads appear to be their specialty. They also have a very local style Tapas menu. They offer a nice selection of very cold domestic and craft beer and decent wines. I had the cheese and fruit plate. Well....it was ok. Three cheeses two were dry, salty and the other was Colby/jack blend. There was one to many salty cheese. Maybe substitute in a Swiss or Jarlsberg? Very good musician. What is there not to love about this place? The coffee is spectacular, make sure you pick up a pound or two of coffee beans to take home! You won't find a better tasting and flavorful roasted bean in the world. The food is delicious, can't say enough about their soups and sandwiches. I think the Buffalo Rooster (chicken salad) sandwich on fresh roll is my all time favorite! And the staff is the nicest bunch of people you ever met in a restaurant. If you have a chance to drop in for a coffee or something to eat, do not pass up this opportunity. We visit family here 2-3 times a year and always look forward to one or two trips to Keen Bean! Stopped by on a road trip to Texas. Son got a mocha which was ok he said, but nothing to write home about. His cinnamon roll was delicious though. My chai was a little too sweet for my liking so I suspect it was from concentrate. However, I loved the spinach quiche. What fell short was the drip coffee, which both my son and husband felt tasted like hot water and a bit of coffee. Basically it was just very weak coffee. He tried every option there was too... all the same. He just couldn't drink it. Disappointing from a roaster. Our measure of a good coffee shop is always the drip coffee, if you can't get that right not worth a repeat visit. read more

I don't live near Keen Bean. Like, if I want to get a coffee, it's going to be an hour drive round trip. This is actually how I became a regular weekly customer here for almost a year--as a stay at home parent of two toddlers with a husband deployed with the military, there have been MANY days where everyone is crying, naps ain't happenin', mama hasn't showered or changed out of PJs and the opportunity to do so doesn't seem to be in sight so we load up in the car and just drive to chill the heck out and hopefully induce a nap. On one of our drives I passed Keen Bean and noticed it had a drive-thru. The only drive-thru coffee place near me is McDonald's, so I was stoked to be able to get better quality without having to bring my sleeping babies inside, not to mention expose my trash person appearance to the rest of their customers and scare away their business. I told the barista at the window, "I need the biggest vanilla latte you can give me." With a wink the sweet barista says, "I gotchu, girl" and returns with a massive cup of foamy hot goodness. Another visit I asked the barista to make me something sweet, but not vanilla as I was feeling a little extra but also too decision-fatigued from single parenting to actually make my own choice. She came back with a huge white chocolate toasted marshmallow combo and said, "I hope you like this! Taste it and if you don't, I won't charge you but I will make something else." I've been driving an hour, weekly, ever since for said latte (and cookies for the kids) because: 1) their customer service is impeccable 2) their lattes have like two inches of foam. Yum. 3) their prices are FAR better than other coffee shops, including chains. 4) they roast in house 5) I once went inside for a bag of whole beans and had a few questions about flavor. A woman (maybe an owner or manager, or just a really knowledgeable employee) came out and gave me a very in depth explanation of types/origin of beans, roasting process, flavors, etc. She even had me smell all the jars of beans, you could tell she was passionate about good coffee from source to cup. 6) yummy baked goods, smoothies (try the peach!) 7) it has a DRIVE-THRU. Every mom of young kids' dream. Anyway. It's worth the drive, so if you have to, make it. read more

This coffee shop belongs in a much larger town. It's an oasis. They have a variety of beans and teas. If you order a French press you can choose your coffee bean flavor from the jars on the shelf; they'll grind it and serve it to you in the press. There's usually around 10 beans/flavors to choose from. They run $3-$5. Smallest is has about 16oz, largest is probably 32oz (that's a guess). Standard coffee delivery systems are also available (drip coffee from a self-serve carafe) and run about $1.50 The quiche is also great! Comfey couches and plenty of tables. Unlike some coffee shops, you can pretty much sit anywhere without feeling like you're on top of the people around you. Go. Here. read more

I stopped by the Keen Bean for a coffee on a road trip and I'm happy that I did. The atmosphere of this joint is cozy, the service was great, everyone here was smiling and the coffee was exactly what I wanted. I was so excited to have found this comfortable coffee house that I decided to stay for a while. I ordered the Antipasto plate which was very tasty and also way more food than I needed at the time so I saved half and had it on the road later. I was also delighted that they have real honey here, a lot of coffee shops do not offer real honey as a sweetener. I got a large coffee to go and was back on the road, revitalized! :) read more

I am from out of town and wanted a nice, quiet, healthy bite to eat while traveling for work. I ended up at Keen Bean which was great. I had a Ceasar Salad and added chicken to it. I got the 1/2 size and it was plenty for a lunch meal. After that I asked the barista what a couple of drinks were and she explained them perfectly and even told me how much sugar was in one of the flavorings. As a coffee snob, the coffee I got was phenomenal and I wished I got something that tasted that good in Springfield on a regular basis. Keen Bean is reasonably priced and has the idea of what a coffee shop should be. I will be coming back when I come to Mt. Vernon. read more
