This place was busy! So the fact that multiple staff members took the time to connect with us was extremely thoughtful. Add to that, after walking a mile in cold temps, the food was still delicious! Previously, the burger was served on the side, the bacon was chopped up throughout the salad, and everything was tossed in a delicious black pepper vinaigrette. It makes the salad surprisingly difficult and messy to eat, and I don't think American cheese complements the salad at all. There does seem to be more lettuce now, which I appreciate, but unfortunately they also changed the dressing. At first, I genuinely thought my salad had been served without dressing because I couldn't see or taste any. I asked our server for extra dressing, and she mentioned that they normally charge $1 for additional dressing but wouldn't charge me this time. She also said she was bringing me a dressing that better complemented the salad...the black pepper vinaigrette, which happens to be the dressing they USED to serve with it. It was delicious and immediately reminded me why I loved this salad in the first place. For what it's worth, I've ordered this salad about four times previously, usually asking for extra dressing, and I've never been charged for it. One small container of the black pepper vinaigrette wasn't enough, so I asked for more. This time I was brought what I believe was called the "house vinaigrette," apparently the same dressing that had already been on the salad. Unfortunately, it tasted like almost pure olive oil. I really did not enjoy it and couldn't understand why they replaced a dressing that worked so well with the salad. I did ask them to hold the pickles and give me extra onions, and they gave me a generous amount of pickled onions. Those were DELICIOUS. I don't remember pickled onions being on the salad before, but that change is definitely an improvement. We also ordered another Burger Salad and substituted crispy chicken for the burger, which they were nice enough to accommodate. Unfortunately, the presentation had the same problem. Instead of slicing the crispy chicken like they used to, the whole piece was placed in the center of the salad with American cheese on top. Trying to cut it while sitting on top of a full salad resulted in lettuce flying off the plate. The old sliced-chicken presentation was so much easier to eat. This salad also came with the new house vinaigrette. My friend ordered the Caesar salad and felt it was extremely overdressed. It looked fine to me, but I didn't taste it, so I can't really judge, and I personally like a heavily dressed salad. The truffle Parmesan fries tasted great, but unfortunately arrived cold. I suggested sending them back, but the person who ordered them was fine keeping them, so that was her call. On the bright side, the grilled cheese with Idaho fries came out hot and was delicious. That seemed to be the one dish at our table that came out exactly as expected. I'm genuinely disappointed because I used to look forward to coming here specifically for the Burger Salad and that black pepper vinaigrette. The old version was flavorful, easy to eat, and felt thoughtfully put together. The new version feels like several unnecessary changes were made to something that was already working really well. Please bring back the original black pepper vinaigrette, chopped bacon, and burger/chicken served on the side or sliced! They did their best, but if this is the normal lunch crowd, they could use some more help in the front of the house. The kitchen was keeping up but the food was sitting on counter waiting for pickup. Again, not the staff's fault. They were moving fast and keeping calm. There was at least as much orders to go as for inhouse. This moment literally gave me time to relax and smell the roses...blessed. Moving on to my review. The Smith has so many diverse, new American dishes. No wonder others enjoy this mini-chain of restaurants.
