I was invited to play pickleball with friends that have a membership at Pickleball Kingdom. The…read morefacility is pretty impressive. I didn't count how many courts they have, but there were a lot! I got to the facility a little before my friends. I went to sit in the lounge area to watch the players. My friends arrived shortly after. The things I like about PK, there are lockers that you can use your own locks. There's a shower, though I did not check it out. But good to know if you had plans after getting all sweaty! I liked the fencing around the courts. We rarely had balls flying in from the other courts, and our balls tended to stay on our court. I liked the wide aisles between the courts. I liked the automatic scoring system, and how it shows the players names on the electronic scoreboard. Though I did keep forgetting to push the button. I liked the instant replay, though after reviewing, it was still hard to tell if the ball was in or out. I want to say the membership was a little less than what I pay for at the facility I belong to. But with my membership, I get 2 free guest passes a month. Also, I wish PK offered punch cards. I've already got plans to return for more pickleball play!

We decided to try their free Pickleball 101 class, and it turned out to be such a great experience…read morethat we're officially hooked. The class was fun, approachable, and genuinely educational. Our coach, Heidi, was fantastic--super informative, patient, and enthusiastic. She walked us through the rules, scoring, court etiquette, how to reserve courts, pricing, and even the social side of the sport with group events. She answered every question we had and gave helpful tips that made us feel confident jumping right in. The facility itself is impressive. It's spacious and thoughtfully designed with tons of courts, clean bathrooms with showers and lockers, a dink simulator, and an area for stretching and basic cardio. There's also a large upstairs room (accessible by elevator) that you can rent out for private parties or events, which is a great bonus. One of the coolest features is the tech integration. They have a system that tracks your score and server rotation--you can even input player names so you don't have to manage it yourself. There's also instant replay for those close calls, and they can automatically email you a video clip of one of your best plays. And yes, there's an app where you can manage your profile, reserve courts, and check in. Super convenient. The layout really makes you feel like part of a community, not just another customer. Parking is plentiful, which is always appreciated. Membership perks are solid too--members can book courts up to 7 days in advance, or up to 2 weeks with a team membership. If you're just dropping in, open play is $25, and they offer four open play sessions per day, which is great for flexibility. We ended up signing up for a team membership, which has a two-month commitment and a $100 initiation fee. Honestly, if you play about five times in a month, you break even after the first month--totally doable if you enjoy playing (and you will). We're already signed up for open play tomorrow and can't wait to get back. Overall, this place is incredibly well thought out, welcoming, and fun. Whether you're brand new or already into pickleball, this is an awesome spot to learn, play, and connect. Highly recommend! I find this place way more enjoyable than going to a gym but you still get a good workout.

One of the pieces of cheese looked rotten. In the room next to us, some unattended youth were playing and one of them casually screamed a racial slur. I'm getting up there in age, and friends my age have been transitioning to pickleball. I tried it several years ago, but my knees weren't having it. Decided pickleball wasn't for me. Fast forward a few years. A friend told me that there was a friend on Facebook that was starting a pickleball group. I asked to join the group. I like staying social and active in my old age. For our first get together we decided on a location that was centrally located of where everyone was coming from. I'm in Hillsboro, one was from Vancouver and another was coming from Troutdale. We decided on The People's Courts. I like that there was plenty of parking. I entered the building and it was spacious with plenty of courts, good lighting. I got there early and since I hadn't eaten yet, went to The Kitchen (I love the reference to "kitchen" in pickleball!) to see what they had. There were a few vegan items, I ended up getting fries and a coke zero while waiting for friends. When my friend that made the court reservation got there, there was a mix up with his reservation. He tried to reserve online, but was unsuccessful. So he called and spoke with someone. The problem was that the reservation was for last month. Availability was now more limited. We ended up getting an outdoor court for half an hour. I actually liked playing outdoors, though it was a warm day. We got The Bunker down in the basement for the next hour. I kind of liked it down there because it was private and had fun music playing! We didn't really know the rules, so we just rallied around. It was a great workout! Upstairs, it looked like plenty of courts, plenty of seating areas to gather and be social. Ping pong tables, corn hole thingies. I saw an arcade. Everything you need to have a fun time!

The park itself is everything you want it to be. Swings and play structures for the kids and a water fountain/splash play area popular in the warm weaver. Bathrooms. Basketball courts. Tennis courts. Walking paths. Covered picnic area and large open field. We attended one of the Music in the Park concerts and the band was Girl Can't Help It, a Journey cover band. They were absolutely fantastic! Totally rocked it! They are playing on the Spirit of Portland in September. There was a very large crowd gathered on the large rolling green field, but it never felt crowded; everyone had plenty of space. The Music was hopping so there were lots of people dancing in front of the stage. There were families and groups of friends everywhere picnicing and enjoying the music. What a fun evening! The free music and concerts in the park is one of my favorite summer activities. Now that I have discovered Tanner Creek Park, I will proactively seek out their schedule so I can enjoy music here often. It as just that good!

That is why most of my time is spent at Willamette Park.
