This is a cool place. I noticed that many of the reviews on this store are older so I decided to write one. I first came here on my way through the area before I moved to Columbus in May. A bit of exploration that day led me to find a new record store. I bought an Alvvays record and went on my way. Jack was chill and has a good perspective on turntables. I had alot to learn in life after that day but regardless kept coming back to this record store throughout! What stands out about RPM compared to all the other record stores in Columbus is the odd/rare finds. As someone who listens to a wide variety of music in order to encapsulate specific times and memories, it is no surprise that I buy obscure vinyls. And this store delivers! I have purchased Revelation (Brian Jonestown Massacre), I Disagree (More) by Poppy, Sinner Get Ready (Lingua Ignota) and Flow Goes the Universe (Laraaji) all at this location. I am excited to go back this month and hopefully purchase the new Poppy Album, Flux. It's also close to hardware store which is a nice juxtaposition! read more

I've shopped in all the stores in Columbus (and Ohio for that matter) and RPM is my favorite. The new vinyl selection here is unrivaled from any other store in the area. Imports, hard to find pressing, mofi series, box sets, they have it all. I've always been impressed with the selection here. If you are looking for a new turntable, either brand new or refurbished, they have it here too. RPM sells Rega, Thorens and Project tables which is very nice, and somewhat rare, to find in Ohio. In addition to new tables, they have a wonderful amount of classic, refurbished tables that will indulge that vintage bone in almost anyone. There are plentiful used sections as well, one that isn't graded (6 records for $10) and a section that is graded where the price varies. I've seen a few people say this place is overpriced but that couldn't be further from the truth. Most of the new vinyl that I've shopped is below the MSRP or in line with any other place, on-line or brick or mortar. I also think another thing that might add to this is RPM gets every version of an LP if it's available, and sometimes that means those more expensive limited editions, something most serious record collectors appreciate having access to. There is a debate I have heard about whether or not records are viable in the age of ipods and cells; they are either here to stay as a sonic superior media for music, or just some trendy fashion sign by hipsters that won't last beyond their "use-by' date. I hope it is the former, as I love the romance of the vinyl black circle on a spin, the concept of an album, and the amazing artwork of their sleeves. Not sure how long this place has been here but I found it walking down High. Records Per Minute has like records per foot because it is stuffed with albums. These are fresh pressed new vinyl wrapped and sealed. It had everything you'd think a classic record store would have: all the classic albums, indy stuff, box sets--John Lennon, The Clash, many more. The classical and jazz sections are really cool with some delectable fines. They are not wanting for titles. A retro space, the walk through is cool through brick arches and wood floors with records playing out the system, a typical old High Street store. They also have various ends of turntables for sale and a smatter of CDs. Above rock shirts of all the classic bands go for $20. If records are here to stay this place is too. Awesome. read more

This used to be one of the best locations in the nation to find audiophile jazz and other genres. I learned while shopping that some time ago it was sold. The new ownership has a different philosophy. For the budget shopper there looks to be a good selection. Every LP in the non-budget section is graded. Though VG++ appeared equivalent to Discogs VG. However, for those of us seeking audiophile labels and a large NM/M- selection, the hunt must continue elsewhere. read more

What a great place. Very good selection of records and a very cool old building. You'll find new vinyl, rare vinyl and everything in between, including a daunting 45 collection just begging you to spend a day with it, leafing through hidden treasures. They also have live music from time to time with the bands playing on just the other side of the brick archway at the end of the shop. As far as record stores go, RPM gets all the stars. My least favorite part of searching through stacks of used vinyl is the allergy affect most record stores seem to curse me with. There's so much dust, my eyes and throat are itchy and irritated and my nose goes berserk. It's no fun. But places like that tend to have a pretty good selection, at least in my experience. I've been to other record stores that are nice and neat and fresh (vs chaotic, cluttered, and the feeling that you're in a hoarder's basement) but they seem to lack the good used records and have 5 million copies of the same Bread album. RPM marries these two breeds of record store in a beautiful, organized space that has records on records, most priced at only $2.00. Most of my used vinyl has cost me more around $4.00 and $5.00. The assistant manager was helpful and friendly and very knowledgeable, well-dressed, and not bad on the eyes ;) Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the grizzled, apathetic, grunting record store dude just as much as the next guy, but it was nice to not feel either like you were wasting this guy's time or the alternative, getting sucked into a 45 minute conversation about the history of floor speakers. My favorite part of the space was easily the gorgeous brick archway dominating the back of the store. New vinyl was fairly priced and there was a section with nicer used albums that were worth more than the $2 of many of their compatriots. They had their fair share of 5 million copies of Elton John's Friends in the $2 sections and I wasn't having any luck there (which makes up most of the inventory but I was looking for pretty specific stuff), so I stuck to the $3 and over section and walked away very happy. They were also selling CDs and DVDs in the back as well as some receivers and other random things. They had some pretty awesome local show posters on the walls and of course were spinning records the whole time. The assistant manager even had to stall ringing someone out (on an iPhone of course) because he said you can't have a quiet record store. True that. This place rocks. read more

It all started when I drove by on my way to class and it was always closed, it wasn't till one sat morning me and my fiancé were eating breakfast at Jack and Benny's (which is amazingly close) and viola it was open! We had a wait for breakfast so we headed over to flip through some vinyl. We got sucked in and almost missed breakfast! This shop was clean and well lit. The organization was superb and steve was super friendly. My favorite was how he has a couple of demo stations where you can preview your purchase. Around the perimeter of the store every thing is 2 bucks! I wish I would have written this review sooner, but this shop is awesome! I love the atmosphere of this shop and their selection is top of the line. There were so many things to look at such as original band posters, books, t-shirts, memorabilia, and of course, records. I mainly collect The Doors, so finding new records other than their six studio albums and other easy to find releases can be a challenge. RPM's selection of Doors records and memorabilia literally blew me away. They had picture disks, imports, obscure live albums, and I could have easily spent over $500 on Doors stuff alone. ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC!! This was my first time walking into RPM and the vibe was great. Have some vintage vinyl spinning in the background and the atmosphere was amazing. Upon opening the door I was greated by a friendly gentleman. Nothing obnoxious. Just saying hi and letting me look around. I had a few questions and he was happy to answer them with hesitation. I ended up purchasing Jack's Mannequin - Everything in Transit 10th Year Anniversary for $30 completely sealed and new which is a great price. Should really be 2 and a half. Records Per Minute isn't bad, exactly, but it's not really good either. As LPs have become more popular, they have become correspondingly more expensive in many stores. In and of itself, this is not a bad thing. This has given record companies a strong incentive to re-release old classics on to vinyl, sometimes in thicker pressings that give them a better sound quality. Unfortunately, the run-away effect in price is getting out of hand, and that's a lot of that in this store. They do have a $2 section and there are certainly a great many records there, but if I had to hazard a guess it's picked over often enough that your odds of finding a gem are pretty small. It's a lot of stuff that people don't want. Then there are the new releases, and to their credit they do have a great many of those. However, the prices for some of them are simply ridiculous. $30 for a copy of Go to Heaven by the Grateful Dead? It actually got a little better for the brand-new stuff (only $25 for Veckatimest by Grizzly Bear), but still. You can find other record stores that are at least a little bit better than that. Lastly, the selection in certain genres is pretty thing. They have a lot of used Jazz, but the big-name, high quality stuff is very thin in terms of offerings. read more

Don't shop here. Spend your money at Spoonful Records or Magnolia Thunderpussy. The owner is very disagreeable and threw a fit when I wanted to exchange something I realized was a bootleg of something I already own the official version of. I wanted to exchange it for something that cost more so he got $5 more dollars out of me anyway so I don't know what his problem was but he made the whole situation very uncomfortable. I echo what's been said so far: I was so happy to have stumbled on RPM today! Steve is extremely nice, easygoing, and I applaud him for a focused selection of new vinyl (by new, I mean both newer titles and virgin copies). I'm not knocking anyone, but I instantly found three titles in the first five minutes that I had searched for the city over. Numerous "essentials" are readily in stock, and just a few days after Record Store Day, no less! I could also spend much more time in the used steals. You will be really disappointed if you find comfort in sneering unhelpful hipsters, overpriced used vinyl, daunting disorganization, or that awkward feeling you get when you really want to support your local record store but can't find a thing: RPM has none of that! Records Per Minute is a great record store. Not only do they have an excellent selection of vinyl - new, used, rare, local, etc - but they also have a nice selection of gear to listen to your wax on. Steve, the owner, has a superior knowledge of his catalog and he also has great suggestions on some other ear candy that you never knew you might be interested in. The location is great too, right in the heart of Clintonville's live music area (Kobo, and Ace of Cups). It's street parking only, but it's always pretty plentiful. read more

Was lucky enough to see this place driving by in the midst of a search for a new turntable. Stopped in and found that they had a nice selection of new players and Steve was a great knowledgeable help in selecting one. I purchased a new Pro-ject carbon, but there were a few used tables as well as some amps, pre amps, and speakers in the shop to check out. RPM is great as a spot for audio gear alone. Added to that a very nice selection of used and new albums which were well organized. I cant wait to go back. A must stop for anyone who is into vinyl. read more

I had high hopes for this place. I kept coming back. Now I've stopped. The selection is large and there is something to be said about the bootleg collection there, but the prices are unreasonable. New vinyl and collectible are just too expensive. There is a large selection of poor condition vinyl available - last time I was there the condition was not marked - so you have to take it out and check it (see my next comment). The business practices seem a little off too. Had an issue where the owner barked at us for trying to open a used, but sealed vinyl. Got it home, found that it was warped (unplayable) took it back, had a frustrating conversation just to return it. Brought up that he wouldn't let us open it. Didn't seem to care that me being put out to travel back down to his store was an avoidable inconvenience had he let me open it in the first place. He did finally accept the return but after the frustrating conversation I didn't quite feel like being there. Returned another time to be ran out of the store promptly 10 minutes before closing time. Head on up the street to Lost Weekend Records or one street over to Elizabeth's records for a much better selection and experience. read more

Worth stopping by frequently as the owner continually restocks everything from the $2 albums to new releases. Cool concert posters, collectibles, turntables and other stuff for sale on the walls, shelves, and in all the bins. Any music lover could easily spend a day or so here. Great prices (and if you aren't familiar with the going rate for new vinyl, then my advice is look around and find out for yourself). The owner knows the records and their background and provides an honest assessment of the condition of the used records. I really like the interior of the old building that they opened the store in, it gives the store character. This store has a ton of new vinyl as well as more vinyl box sets then I have even seen in any store I have gone in.
