I was visiting Columbus Ohio on April 11 and I decided to go into this vintage record store that had apparently been there for years. I bought five different T-shirts. The young man at the register asked if I was going to use debit or credit. I told him credit. He rang me up. Came out to $79. I was surprised why so much so I took a look at the receipt and he had charged me a service fee of five or six dollars. I asked him what that was and he said oh that was a service fee for using a credit card and I said to him you should've told me and after that he went silent and so did his associate. Neither of them said anything. They were very perturbed that I said anything. Unbelievable!! I will never be going back there again and I will let everybody know about my experience about them adding things to my total without mentioning it. This is unethical and flat out wrong. I could care less on the five dollars extra but he should've asked me beforehand. We are doomed with Gen-Z!! read more

I found a couple of LPs here but was non-plused with the selection. Most of their floor space was dedicated to CDs, not vinyl. It was a tight squeeze to look at albums because the displays were so close together. The young lady who checked me out was very friendly. I found their pricing to be higher than usual, but I don't know if that is typical for the area. read more

I love this place so much. Whenever I go downtown, I go to magnolia. Me and my girlfriend have spent so much time here. Staff is super super nice. There's a HUGE variety of vinyl, cd's, and cassettes. Some things are a bit expensive but it's vinyl what do you expect LOL. While in town, we decided to check out whatever record store was closest to where we were staying... But, I've gotta admit that the name of this place also was a draw-in. They've got a pretty large collection of music, it took us quite a bit to go through it. I found it to be really organized, and loved how they had a ton of tabs for popular artists in alphabetical order. Aside from their main attraction being vinyls, they also had a pretty extensive collection of CDs, cassettes and store merch. The staff were also friendly and pleasant to interact with. I walked for about four blocks to get here on a freezing cold morning, and immediately was greeted with a nice environment, mood, and a great selection of records. Prices are high, but it's a record store so that kind of thing is to be expected. I came here on my visit walking along the short north and found this incredible place. It gets a big star just because of its name. The store is a vintage heaven. There's so many vinyl tracks but they carry A track cassettes, CDs and various other music nostalgia besides clothing. Store is clean, staff is friendly and helpful. I had a very knowledgeable person assisting me. I don't know much about records but I think they have reasonable prices. I feel they have a nice selection of goods. I really like that they have a filing system to access content. I don't know... but I spent over $100 in there. I bought records, a pin for my collection, and my nephew a lunch box. read more

My boyfriend and I were in the Columbus area and wanted to find a Vinyl shop near by the convention center. This popped up! Come on, with a cool name like that, you have to check them out! Glad we did! We entered and I already liked the place! They were blasting Iron Maiden! YESSSS!!! The first thing we hit was the T-shirt area. We definitely wanted a shirt from Magnolia Thunderpussy ($15.00 each). I got a teal color and my boyfriend got a orange/red. There are more different T-Shirts in the back. The front is used CDs and when you heads towards the back is the vinyls. I was shocked that they had two rows of $.99 bins! I was in heaven. I was able to find 9 albums jazz/easy listening. Their records are organized and, catergorized and stocked. The shelves are not tight. My only con is that they have the used mixed in the new pressed vinyls. I think they should keep them separate. They have a good selection of R&B and mostly rock. Some Jazz and International. The employees were super cool and friendly. My boyfriend and I really enjoyed our time here! If we are ever in the area, we are definitely dropping by again! read more

This is a decently stocked tourist-centric store. Get your t-shirts or whatever, but if you're looking for something like a new used arrival, expect to dig through hours of total chud to find it. Simply putting that out separately would draw a specific and regular clientele, but perhaps the thongs, tiedyes, and trucker hats do the trick? High potential, almost always a letdown, but props to being in the game for so long. The band F-cked Up made it clear which store to visit in town. read more

Music Diner, Magnolia survived the disc and digital only era to come out into this tangible media revival with its greatness preserved. Records, new and used. T-shirts for the bands and pop culture references worth wearing. CDs, buttons, stickers, stereos and vintage audio gear...even an incense section near the front. Helpful staff that is almost a caricature of standard record store mavens...super helpful, knowledgeable, and friendly to a fault. And this place has a paid parking lot in addition to metered spots on the street...quite the rarity along High Street. Came here as a college student; brought my college student children here this week. What's old is new again, but some things that never left deserve more love than those who just jumped into the pool. And don't call records "vinyls." I love record stores. But I do not love this one. I don't care for the look or layout of this store. Like the poster display between the front half of the store and the back half of the store. It sticks out, and if anyone is standing there flipping through the posters, they're in the way. The vinyl section is really narrow so you can't comfortably pass by someone in the same isle. Definitely not handicap accessible. They sell a lot of things like pins, shirts, posters, and coffee mugs. They have an okay selection of music. I've been there a few times and didn't find anything I was looking for. I've noticed there's a lot of artists they should be carrying, but don't. And they really should ditch the poster display and instead make it a new release wall and maybe even include staff recommendations. read more

I spent several hours on this store's web site after finding a record I couldn't find elsewhere and put together a $200 order. Three days later, I got an email stating simply: "This order has been cancelled," and all but one of the titles now are "Unavailable." No explanation or "We're sorry." They obviously need to update both their inventory and their customer service skills. Edited to add: The store did send a nicely worded email explaining all items were backordered with an apology for the cancellation, which I appreciate, so I added another star. However, if they don't have the records in stock, they shouldn't be "available" to buy online. read more

Cool little record shop in the art district of Columbus. Things I liked about this place: The selection. They had a whole lot of stuff I was surprised they had. Weird and rare stuff that you don't normally find in record shops. There is a whole lot to choose from for cds, dvds, & vinyl. I was able to find a couple things I've been looking for for awhile. The atmosphere. I don't know, it just seemed really cozy in there. It was very comfortable. If I lived closer I could imagine going in there on a regular basis and just looking through things all day. Just a comfortable place to look through an extensive selection of items. The artwork on the side of their building is pretty bad ass as well. Things I didn't like about this place: They were pretty overpriced. I get that small independent record stores need to make a profit, but what is the point if a lot of what you sell is so overpriced no one is ever going to buy it. For new vinyl I would say the average price was around $34. That's pretty extreme. I think $20-$25 is a lot more reasonable. $34 is more than stupid overpriced FYE charges on average. There's got to be somewhere that could be met in the middle where they can still make a decent profit but not charge something so unreasonable. The customer service was pretty much nonexistent. The employees here seem to be off in their own little world and customers seem to be somewhat of a necessary annoyance in their world. It does, for a second, add to the charm of this place. But if you're looking for some help or trying to check out the charm quickly fades. Don't get me wrong, I really did like this place and definitely will go back when I'm in the area again. I just wish these couple of small issues would be addressed. I'm such a huge supporter of independent music stores, I would hate for a couple little things to cost them any business. A record store...right on High Street, in the Short North/campus area...in 2020?! Say it ain't so! Magnolia's been around since 1970 or so, and they still seem to be going strong. They've got plenty of goodies that are tough to find at other music shops (patches/apparel/etc.)...and their CDs are all organized alphabetically and labeled by artist (take note of some funny little jokes/commentary on several of the name tabs!) They've got an especially extensive metal selection, if you're into that kinda thing. New discs seem to outnumber used, so expect slightly higher prices than average. (I tend to favor CDs, so I can't really vouch for their vinyl selection). And disappointingly, they only seem to carry band shirts in "one-size-fits-all" XL (not all of us rockers are big burly brutes, ya know!). Altogether, though, it's a fun place for huntin'...and a great throwback to a Short North unsullied by corporate overlords. read more

Tons of music, lots of shirts, stickers, etc. Well-organized, fun to poke around in. I haven't been to any other campus record stores lately, so I can't compare to the current scene. One would expect the Short North to host a much hipper and obscure leaning record store, but once you realize that Used Kids has that part of the market cornered, Magnolia Thunderpussy makes a lot of sense. This is my first stop in Columbus when I'm in search of semi-obscure new releases that I don't feel like waiting to order off of the internet. The prices are average and usually depend more on what's set by the albums label, which is a huge step up from places like Johnny Go's House of Music and Singing Dog, which seemingly mark up their prices at random for no good reason. The used selection here is OK, but everything is stuck in those obnoxious plastic cases that most record stores only use on new releases. I dare you to try and sift through the used section in its entirety before you get annoyed and wander off in another direction. The prices are usually stuck around $6 no matter how bad the album is, too, which probably explains why the stock of 90's alt0rock one hit wonders has been static ever since I started shopping there over 5 years ago. One thing Magnolia has that most other places don't is cool extras like t-shirts, magazines, and a glass case full of tons of of awesome pins, patches, and stickers. I went as an emo scene kid for Halloween three years ago and managed to do most of my shopping right here at Magnolia. The staff is entertaining and rarely judgmental, which makes this a great stop during an afternoon of window shopping in the Short North. read more

I remember hearing about Magnolia Thunderpussy when I was in high school as THE place to go for music memorabilia. The name almost scared me away. But growing up in a tiny Ohio town with not even a Wal-Mart (it has one today, though), we had nothing even close to this. My friends and I would often drive down to Columbus as soon as we were old enough to drive to go to concerts, and if we'd get down here early enough, we'd stop here. Back when I was a teenager and just had to have everything sporting my favorite bands' logos, this place was heaven. They had everything; much more than the Sam Goodys and FYEs in the malls. I found a lot of cool stuff here. I remember my most exciting purchase was a rare band poster I still haven't seen anywhere else. It was like Christmas for me the day I bought it. I've bought CDs, T-shirts, all kinds of stuff from here. And I don't think the prices are that bad, really. I think they have just about everything here, but every time I went in I made a beeline for my kind of stuff. So all I remember is rock. And the name and the look of the place also scream rock, too. But their website seems to have an ad for Britney Spears, so I guess anything goes here. I don't remember seeing that stuff here back in the day, but I might have had my proverbial blinders on. Years later, now that I've calmed down a bit and just listen to (and download) my favorite music instead of also having to decorate my room and my body with it, I don't really come here so much. (BTW, what is it about being a teenager that makes you so crazy for bands? Maybe it was just us being bored in a small town.) If I ever need any kind of rock anything, I'd check here first, though. And the location is great. It's within walking distance of my place (so it's in the Short North) and it's right next to Skully's. (So you can use Skully's parking lot!) The kind of crowd that goes to Skully's looks like they would also go here, so that location is probably keeping them alive while other record stores wither away. The staff here has always been friendly and helpful, and I remember the day I bought that poster I talked about earlier. The guy at the counter could see my excitement and instead of making me feel like a stupid kid, he made me feel like this poster was some sort of secret that I was let in on. It was very cool. I wanna give Magnolia 5 stars, but I never go to record stores and think CDs are overpriced. But if I ever did need anything, I would go here first, hands down. read more

Gather 'round, kids. I'd like to tell everyone a story of the worst customer service experience I have ever encountered in my life. A few months ago, I purchased a very large record player that was on the fritz. Living in the Short North area, I knew of Magnolia Thunderpussy Records and thought they could help. When I called, the employee who answered told me that a man named Chuck, the owner, could come out to take a look at it, and order the parts that it needed. We agreed on a price for that service, and I said I would wait for his call. Every subsequent week that passed, I would call, leave my number, name, and reason I was calling, and I was assured he would get in touch with me. After many weeks of waiting by the phone, I finally just went into the store one day and happened to catch Chuck before he had left for the day. I introduced myself, to which he said "Oh yeah, you're the one that's been calling". Not off to a great start. "Yes, I'm the one that's been calling." I start to explain what is wrong with the player when he brings me over to a $100 new turntable and plainly states "this is what you need to fix it". "How could you know what it needs if you haven't even seen it?", I asked. "Because I know", he replied. I once again asked that he come out to see it for himself, like I had been assured that he would be able to do. We go back and forth on times and dates when we finally arrive on Monday evening after 5. He warmly expressed that that would be a good time to "get it over with". Monday at 5 rolls around, I call like he had asked me to, and he all but forgot that we had an appointment or that it was even Monday. He asked if we could reschedule for Tuesday morning at 10:15. He then asked for my number and my name, as if it hasn't already been given to him many times, and as if we hadn't met in person not even a week prior. Strike two. Tuesday morning at 10:15 rolls around. Then it becomes 10:30. Then the clock runs past 10:30 and I know he's not coming. I call the store to cancel my appointment and as it turns out, he hasn't even come to the store yet! I introduce myself once again, explain why I'm calling, and the employee cuts me off by saying "Well, he is the owner so he has to do what he needs to do", as if he was expecting my call and was already prepared to defend Chuck. If Chuck did not have time to make a personal house call, he should have let me know. I called no less than four times, and each time was an opportunity for Chuck or an employee to let me know I should take my business elsewhere. I can't believe how much of an ordeal it has been to essentially throw my money at these people to fix my record player and they could not have been more difficult or rude. I will never, ever, shop here again and I'll go blue in the face letting everyone I know not to go there either. read more

Magnolia ThunderWHAAAAAAT??? Well, I'll admit, the name alone made me wanna visit, and I'm certainly glad I did! This place is truly a haven for vinyl addicts! My lady and I stopped by during a day trip to Columbus and were thoroughly impressed by EVERYTHING! The selection of vinyls was very vast and easy to navigate. Plus they have one of the biggest 99 cent sections LOADED with hidden gems waiting to be discovered. The staff were all super friendly and knowledgeable too. Needless to say, we spent a couple hours here easily, finding all sorts of goodies. But vinyls aren't the only things to be found here. They also have tons of CDs and a plethora of music t-shirts all around. My lady and I scored a couple shirts featuring the store name and logo because we just couldn't resist it. This is definitely a destination to get your vinyl fix if you're a fanatic like me! The place really is as epic and unique as its name! read more

Large selection of vinyls, decently priced too. You'll probably find what you're looking for on 12" if you just ask or dig through the crates. Good selection of CD's as well, lots of underground artists that most shops wouldn't carry. There's a few racks with DVDs and a lot of music based DVDs. A few cool obscure cult/horror films in the mix. Cheap prices. In terms of music or movie based t-shirts, there's a great selection of both ranging $18-$20. From black metal, classic rock, punk, hip-hop, electronic, your favorite artist will probably have their shirt here. There's also patches and buttons for around $1-$5 Customer service could be better but what do you expect from a music shop? Nobody's jumping up to help you find what you're looking for, but if you ask they're more than happy to help...or at least type it into their computer and check the stock list. Girl working there currently was friendly and so was the younger man, but there is a grumpier dude with a mustache who was kinda rude but I took no offense to it like my girlfriend did. We were killing time before dinner taking a stroll down High Street and were drawn into the store because well, a) the name and b) the shirts they had hanging up in their store front window. "Call me Maeybe" with a huge picture of George Michael Bluth's face and "soft kitty warm kitty little ball of fur" I had never been in here before and had no idea what to expect. Apparently, they have new and used movies, records, cd's, etc for sale. And t-shirts. LOADS of t-shirts, ranging from comedic sitcoms to every band you could possible imagine. I didn't really check out the media prices, but the t-shirts ranged between $9.99 to 19.99. I really liked the feel of this store and I appreciate that there are still places like this left. read more

I stopped by today to purchase some records & look around. I'm a 49 year old female, was dressed nicely & came in prior to meeting my son for lunch. I purchased 2 items. After lunch my son wanted to stop in so I returned & ended up purchasing another album. The gentleman working there was by by far one of the most rude individuals I've ever met!!! I told him I was in earlier & showed him by bag & poster, he immediately snapped at me & said "You should've left them here!" "Show me your receipt!!" I almost thought he was kidding but then yelled again for me to show him my receipt!! His attitude continued throughout my sale, telling me it "smells like a Friday!!!" Whoever he is, he should NOT be working with the public!! My son told me I should report him & that I didn't deserve the rude attitude I was given. I will never come back, my son will never return as well. (Sad because he works within walking distance & loves music!) I'm appalled by how I was treated today. read more

I love this place. Lots of cool shirts, fairly underground. Bigger selection and much cheaper than hot topic or something like that. They have physical copies of music still. Vinyl records too. One my purchases here included the anarchist cookbook. If youre a fan of metal, punk, alternative, indie or whatever you'll really like this place. I would like to buy some posters, some shirts and other paraphernalia next time I'm here. The parking is limited. Beggars hang out in this area so watch out and lock your doors. read more

They have a great vinyl selection, almost anything you want they have in there. However, the staff and employees are extremely rude and not friendly. They show no willingness to help and act like the customers are idiots who don't know what they are doing. Overall, they have a good selection, but I'd try and find some other place. read more

I am beginning to really hate this place. Sometimes the selection is good, that's when I like it. Most of the time the staff is rude, sharing way too much of their personal life with coworkers and listening to crap music that makes me want to pull my stomach out through my nose. So bring headphones. Website states hours that the staff doesn't keep. I have had several occasions of looking up the hours online only to find the staff shut down early or hours have changed or they never opened on holidays (July 4 and Labor Day are a couple of recent examples). To end on a good note, a local brewery opened next door so you can enjoy a beer while reading the liner notes on your recent purchases (if you are lucky). read more
