Friendly downtown record store, with knowledgeable, chatty staff. Located very near the Ohio Statehouse. I am impressed that the folks that work here seem to have quite a good handle on the live local music scene, which is a nice distinction and helps him to really stand out. In addition to a great selection of vinyl, they also have some useful supplies available for dedicated record collectors. sometimes record stores can be "dusty" this one is well lit superbly organized, and a joy to visit. I've never been in this store that it hasn't been enjoying heavy foot traffic from other audio fans. Definitely came in here to look around with my brother while he shops for new records. They had a great selection of records to pick from. Though ther didn't have wha we were looking for they were able to take down my brother's information to call him about when they do get the record in it. we did walk in when they were about to close so I didn't wanna spend too much time in there, but it was so beautiful. AMAZING. RECORD. STORE. I was having breakfast at 4th & State, and realized that I placed far too much money on the meter. Noticed that there was a record store next door and figured it wouldn't hurt to browse their selection. I'm VERY GLAD THAT I DID. Simply put, this place was AMAZING! Normally, Hip-Hop sections in Record Stores are relatively small and leave a lot to be desired. So when I walked in and saw their extensive selection, I knew that this would be the place for me. R&B was also like this, as well. I ended up buying Morgan Wallen's Dangerous (Double LP) and Solange's a Seat at the Table. Together, that was about $60 and I thought it was a fantastic price/value. The staff members were kind as well, as I raved about how great of a find this store was. We even had small banter about the Nicki Minaj show I attended the night before. Excellent store and if I'm ever back in Columbus, I'll be here to add some new things to my collection. read more

I've been here twice and both times I felt so welcomed and appreciated. I used to go to magnolia when I wanted new records but when I first stepped foot into this shop I was astounded with how relatively cheap the records were. It's nice being able to pick up my favorite albums and adding them to my collection without paying an absurd amount for an album that's worth 20. Overall this is the best record shop in my opinion. We had a few minutes to spare before eating at Dirty Franks (around the corner), and were SO HAPPY to discover Spoonful Records! BESIDES the selection, including a bargain bin right up front (love those), let me tell you about the staff. THEY ARE SO KIND. Knowledgeable about their vinyl, they are also super friendly to visitors. I was dropping Ed and Lillie off to the Queen concert downtown at the arena, and asked them the best way to get there. I was glad I stopped in before heading out of town. I always like to check out a local record shop when I'm in a new city and I only had time for one while in Columbus: Spoonful turned out to be a solid choice. Lots of new and used and most of the used appear to be checked and cleaned which is nice. Prices are really fair--there are some bargains to be found. Selection isn't enormous but it's solid, most of what is here is worth having (e.g. not a lot of junk filler). The staff are knowledgeable and friendly. read more

One of the most remarkable vintage and new record stores I've visited during my travels for work. Very organized by genre and history, excellent music from various artists playing in the background (which helps remind me to search for them as I scour the store). Prices are very respectable and reasonable for today's buyers of vintage and new music. Brett and Elijah were very knowledgeable and friendly to questions and conversations. I called Spoonful Records the other day for a question about my record player and Xenia was just SUPER kind and helpful. I didn't realize it was about an hour away from me but because of how great she was and was able to give me a price right off the back for the repair I described I decided to make the drive. When I arrived the owner even helped with carrying my player into the store from the car. He started the repairs and was intentional about making sure my transportation back home would be safe and was great about informing me about fix. A quant shop in the popping, up and coming, East Long neighborhood, Spoonful presents inside its recess doors a classic record store space with an interesting twist in decor: a pea green color adorns the walls and flows back to a window dressed in a 'grandma' style curtains. Though it would seem to clash, the color scheme works well with the throwback feel of the slinder space with displays flanking the entrance harkening back to the age of urban street shopping. The bay to the right welcomes with strings of colored records and a retro Kodac advertisement, to the left stacks of records, players, and other stuff are displayed. With sigage using bouncy fonts, the clean lines of its widow decal, and the cute little record store street sign, Spoonful combines a midcentury nostalgia with a clean newness. Inside you will find friendly clerks. Inventory here is 95-percent vinyl albums of a healthy selection. There is a few compact disks on sale but this is a place for the better sounding analogs. To add to the sense of retro-ness two pinball games are available. Prices here seem in-line to the other few record stires left in town. Great selection of some personal favs. I unfortunately did not have enough change to feed the meter, so I was pressed for time to look around Spoonful. I first met the retired father, he helps his son and daughter-in-law run the business, and he was so pleasant. His name has slipped my mind, but I gladly encourage you to find him and introduce yourself. I wasn't looking for anything in particular, but he did direct me to the rock section (I love 60s music). Several caught my eye. The gentleman pointed out a CCR that I need to go back and purchase! Though I've neglected to play my stash over the last several years, I feel that vinyl records are something worth holding on to, perhaps passing on to a younger generation, in due time. I'll definitely make a stop back in to support Spoonful, as vinyl shops are somewhat few and far between, nowadays. read more

Super pleased that someone had the nerve to open a downtown record store on a stretch of Long Street that probably has not had much foot traffic since the Town and Country shopping center started ruining the urban core in the Eisenhower era. Risk deserves reward, so my friends and I stop in here regularly to check out the churn and to see if any gems have come in since our last visit. Bought four records and a new release cassette today. Owner Brett posts on Facebook frequently and notifies followers the interesting catches that have come in. You can shoot him a message to claim an item you want, but I really prefer the bin flipping. Who knows what you are going to find...you won't know until you look. Compilations, B sides, and forgotten favorites are what vinyl is all about...you can't get this stuff on MP3 in many cases. Spoonful will get to know your style and will remain on the lookout at your behest. Great cheap bin section in back with fifty cent to one dollar records that are still playable. Got my buddy a Conway Twitty from there as a joke, and he framed it and put it in his office. Used bins adorn the walls with a great selection of most styles of music. I find good punk and new wave here. My buddy finds classic rock and some hair metal. Another pal has found soul and folk. I found an EP single of a European new wave band, a track I had looked for forever, for $1 in the dance singles slot. Many new release vinyl is here, too. Pricier but on 180 gram pressings...got a Smiths, an Iggy Pop, and plan to get a Metric, the new Bowie, and an MGMT at some point. Turntable, speaker, and mini receiver sets for under $200 make a great gift for those who can't play vinyl yet, or if you need another system that doesn't take up the whole living room. Many special events with bands are held here. And there are two pinball machines set to free play. This is the textbook example of a small business that we should all go to. Even if you have no love of vinyl, buy an album with great cover art, get one of the record album frames, and have something that your recipients will hang in their place for the rest of the their lives. This record store is a wonderful place to wander and find the perfect new vinyl to add to your collection. The owners really let you take your time in the bins and don't mean mug you for touching the merchandise like some people do. A friend of mine told me about this place. She frequently goes here and I can see why. The store offers great service and the staff was friendly up front. I saw someone dropping off records, and it appears the owners really develop a relationship with collectors on both sides. They have even found a record for my friend before and held it in the store until she could come pick it up. I definitely recommend checking out the dollar section! You never know what you're going to find, and some records are priced under a dollar as well. Some items are priced at this discount rate due to record quality and some are just diamonds in the rough. On my first visit, I came out with 6 records for $22...not too shabby. Parking was kind of a pain, but there apparently is a lot right next door that my boyfriend and I had mistaken for being closed off. There are some things in this world more dangerous than drugs and gambling. The tediously procured record collection at Spoonful records will result in all your bills not being paid. The selection here is incredible, the owner Brett still spends time searching "in the wild" to amass the amazing collection he has for sale. If you are tired of looking through dusty bins of collections that resemble your dads tired classic rock collection then this place is for you. Of course all of the standard "best" albums of rock are here to buy including most staples of any good collection (T-rex, New York Dolls, Lou Reed, David Bowie, Bob Dylan, Iggy and the Stooges). The most impressive aspect of this place is the selection of Modern albums. I managed to walk out with Sufjan Stevens, Bon Iver, Neutral Milk Hotel, BLK JKS, and Regina Spektor. I unfortunately had to leave behind the White Stripes, My Morning Jacket, Can re-issues, Black Keys, Bitches Brew re-issue, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Andrew Bird and so on. Simply impeccable selection of new albums and re-issues. This is what a record store should be, a place to purchase and discover new music. I do have to say that the hip-hop and punk/hardcore selection is lacking if that's specifically what you are looking for. The jazz and country selection is healthy but not expansive; I am sure you would be able to find something that tickles your fancy in either category though because all of the greats in their respective genre are covered without much "filler" albums to pad the selection. Decked out in impeccable mid century modern furniture mixed with 60's era pin ball machines this place is a chill lounge to spend hours on end flipping. The prices rival online stores because he goes directly to the distributor and sells for a competitive price. Hands down I will be shopping here over Amazon. Also you can use their shared lot with B1 bicycles to park for free. read more

It has been repeatedly written--and to paraphrase Wolfe--that one "can't go home again", in other words, that the past is best left in your rear-view mirror. Vinyl was once king of music distribution but fell quickly and hard to the avarice and plasticity of the '80s, to the point, that even the biggest artists for almost two decades ceased releasing even boutique samples of their product... Then, unexpectedly, the Black Circle made its comeback, attracting those with a fondness for an analog and tactile representation of their fave choons or, even more so, those audiophiles that never wavered in their commitment and were now rewarded with renewed interest in a once-considered-dead format. Luckily for Columbus, Ohio, there were/are many brick-n'-mortar spots that ploughed through lean times while the NKOTB, Spoonful, popped up mid-'10 to offer a clean, well-thought out, and thoroughly researched experience for the neophyte to obsessive record nerd. With a family-driven staff, calming atmosphere, and a spacious commercial plan, you will be given the best and friendliest service. Requests are taken seriously and given priority. Prices are well-within (and many times far below) guide book yet each previously-owned record is lovingly cleaned and scrutinised for disposition. As to new releases (and there are weekly new releases), rarely is there a need to go elsewhere! And, to top off the retro-experience, ask about and, then, play the pinball machines--but be prepared to get an history lesson in arcade games...which is a good thing! In short, Spoonful Records is the sort of store that produces a flood of memories, taking one back to a time when weekly record store visits were commonplace and part of the familial bonding ritual. This place is great. I'm so used to going to record stores where everything is either way overpriced or there's just a lack of variety. I like Spoonful because they truly have it all. Multiple albums for each artist finally led me to a record I've been hunting for (Led Zeppelin IV) AND it was at an amazing price. Their bargain bin also has some actual gems in it! So, I don't own a record player or any records. I used to have the soundtrack from The Electric Company, but that was like 25 years ago. Regardless, I still really enjoyed this store!! The owner and his crew have transformed the space into a place you want to hang out. Mellow green walls and record racks, checkerboard floors, some loungy couches and chairs. The store itself has a wide range of music to choose from, whether you want local music (of which there is a fairly decent size of records to search through) or heavy metal to classical and hip hop/R&B there is something for everyone. They also sell turntables if you're in need of one to get your hobby off the ground. I just got home from selling some LP's to Spoonful Records in Downtown Columbus. I hadn't been to a record store in a few years, and I hadn't tried to sell any records in a very long time. I didn't have very high hopes for how much money I would get for them, since it was just one crate, and many of them were badly damaged (scratches, warps, poor covers). And I was right: the very nice young lady at the counter could only buy about half of them because the others were so rough. But I'm very happy to report that I still got a LOT more money for the good records than I thought I would...like, quadruple the amount I had in my head! This money is a Godsend to me. Money's real tight, thanks to the 'Rona. Not only will you get top dollar for your playable vinyl at Spoonful, you'll also be dealing with two of the nicest shop owners in Columbus. Both folks working there (I feel remiss because I did not get their names) were very welcoming, and we chatted about a range of subjects while she examined my stack of vinyl. They're very gracious and passionate about what they do, and especially about their customers. I left the interaction feeling like I had made two new friends. People think that they can't go to record stores if they don't have a record player. In most cases, they'd be right. But not in the case of downtown's Spoonful Records, a new vinyl shop that opened just a few months ago. Of course the store has a cornucopia of records: vinyl old and new alike. That's of course what you'd expect. The catch is, not all of the vinyl at Spoonful Records are for playing music. How can that be, you ask? Spoonful Records got extremely creative with their old vinyl and have lots of fun products that were made by a local artist out of records that are too scratched up and no longer can play music. They have cut, twisted, bent, and molded old records into everfyday items, such as sketchpads, notebooks, bookends, business card holders, pencil holders, desk organizers and dishes. I KNOW, fun right?! These items are PERFECT gifts that double not only as useful household items, but pieces of art! You just can't resist buying something at Spoonful Records, especially since they are very reasonably priced. It's fun to find items that happen to have an artist you like, as well. For instance, I got a sketchpad with a Bob Dylan record for the cover. It's great. The clerk at the store made an excellent point while I was there; there are not many places at all downtown if you need to step out on your lunch break and get a quick gift. Shopping is very limited in downtown Columbus. But keep in mind that Spoonful Records has a ton of fun ideas for music lovers! A pinball machine is like the cherry on top of the record store cake here, and if you want to buy records but have nothing to play them on, the store also has record players at pretty good prices! read more

Came here for RSD 2013 last weekend. Definitely an a-ok shop, and I am tempted to give them a star solely for having the gall to open a record store in downtown Columbus, where most shops unfortunately still close at 5-6pm because of the suburban flight that occurs at 5pm every day. Instead maybe I'll just say 3.5 stars. I never give half stars...not my thing. Anyway, It's a small shop. I prefer a bit larger of a collection so I can spend more time sifting through the used bins. While it was lacking a tad in the used department, the new releases were pretty on point. A very nice range of stuff spanning multiple genres, not just the indie stuff you'd expect. The staff was very friendly and talkative; one lady in particular didn't shy away from recommending some other local shops to my out-of-town friend I brought along. That kind of spirit goes a long way to building a better community instead of building barriers between shops. Some other reviewers have pointed out the layout and cleanliness, and they're right. It has a very good flow that kind of directs you around the bins and right to the register. Not an accident, I'm sure. read more
