Calgary's East Village is an up-and-coming neighborhood. It's development has been slowed down by…read morelower oil prices (the big industry in these parts), so who knows what this area will look like next year. In the meantime, there's enough construction here to imagine the possibilities. That includes the retail outposts like Liz & Lottie who have staked their success on their stylish taste and the promise of a lot more foot traffic past their shop. I wandered on a recent Friday afternoon and thoroughly enjoyed this version of retail therapy. Liz & Lottie is more geared perhaps to those who are "sugar and spice and everything nice", but for folks like me (e.g. snips and snails and puppy dog tails), there some interesting things, plus loads of gift opportunities. I also enjoyed their nice selection of local and Canadian items and their good taste in selecting and displaying their wares. Liz & Lottie was definitely worth the extra bit of East Village discovery exploration. Best wishes for your continued success.

My super stylish and in the know sister in law has been finding awesome gifts at Liz & Lottie for everyone in the family since they've opened and I have been following them on Instagram to keep tabs on the new items coming into the shop. The two owners are super kind and helpful, I've messaged them on Instagram with shopping requests/items I am looking for and they have sent me back pictures of products they have in store that match the request -- how nice is that! I often visit on my lunch break as they are tucked into the East Village at the bottom of one of the high rises but it's easy to get there either from walking through the river walk, taking the train to the end of the free line then going for a short stroll or driving right up there. On this visit I walked away with gift for four upcoming events! A sassy and slightly inappropriate valentines card for my husband, a baby shower gift, a gender reveal party gift and a birthday party gift. Trust me I could have kept shopping! Great place to find all sorts of treasures including local and Canadian makers which is so great to see.

I loved wandering around and imaging some gift possibilities. I was particularly struck by some of the wall art, and a few creative takes on books. When I first visited close to Christmas I literally bought all of the things and had so many positive comments on the unique local gifts that I picked up for everyone. They also host great workshops for everything from social media strategy to painting nights. I've attended two of the painting nights that they hosted with Heart & Swirl and loved every minute of it, the location is great and you can shop in between steps in the workshop.

Long story short, she ordered items before I confirmed, as I specifically asked for a quote first, and pressured me into buying them. I had emailed her asking specifically for quotes if I were to purchase X items, and she responded saying she had ordered a bunch of the items and told me the price in the same email. I was shocked by the price and could not afford the full amount I was looking for and initially felt bad, telling her Id take them off her hands since she'd already ordered them, even though I no longer even needed those items, but did not realize how expensive it was and that I just couldn't afford it. When I went in, she said it wasn't her problem and that she had ordered them just for me, and felt that I had led her on... all I had done was discussed the project with her and asked for quotes, and I had been transparent about not being sure about some things being my first project of this scale, but she went ahead and ordered BEFORE giving me the price, there is no obligation on my end to purchase at the end of the day. I could have not shown up at all that day but I am someone who keeps their word. She ended up giving me 10% off, which was literally just one of the 10 items free (I spent close to $1k there, you're welcome, on items that are literally $45 less at Michaels, and I will never be back).

She was helpful, efficient, kind and even offered me a discount on my purchases because they didn't have the quantity that I needed. I arrived almost at closing hours but did not feel rushed or judged. The store was clean and well organized. I was able to get in quickly and got everything I needed for my art project the next day. Why not pay a little more for authentic ceremonial pieces at Buhran. The store has a good selection of many things, prayer tablets, pillowcases, lanterns, so if you don't mind paying for what I know is a huge mark up on all these items but love Tibet then this is your store.

The clothes are beautiful and can be fairly expensive considering their quality but they have decent sales. But to be honest, I don't go for the clothes. I love the buddha statues which are just beautiful, the prayer flags, the gemstones and the jewelry. It all feels unique, and the family that runs the place is just lovely. It's always worth a peek.
