So I was trying to surprise my gf in these rough times and brighten her birthday, so I started emailing with them about a new black wing pencil that my gf wanted since they were closed and she was amazing at the time then over a month later of emailing back and forth my gf gets a call when I get home and here's Trish calling her to say the pencils are in completely forgetting about my prior engagement to buy them without her knowing. So now surprise ruined so I email her back asking what happened and she say sing sorry we had your gf's (Duy) under lee a guys name so we apologize but there is nothing we can do cause of the American dollar and tough times so we can't help you out or do anything as it's not our fault So yet I go pick up the pencils that now my gf paid for on her credit card and you call and the owner will come out and meet you but I get there and he comes out and only car there is a 2019 Range Rover..... tough times hey! This Reid's is obviously run by tiny people as demonstrated by their Christmas decoration display that I had to dodge at every turn. What kind of place tries to strangle its customers? Anyway, the girls working the front end didn't have time for those kinds of questions. They were too busy discussing the necessity of obtaining more "squirrel stuff" for a new display. I have no goddamn idea what that meant, but they seemed quite passionate about the whole thing..... Reid's is confusing in a way. At the back is a very serious office supply shop with paper, nice pens, stationary, etc. At the front is a bunch of female junk (ornaments and figurines that possess no immediate use), mixed in with silly stuff like a "grow-your-own prostitute" and do-it-yourself drug test gum. This place is also crammed with as much stuff as could possibly fit in the place. Which means they have a decent selection of useful things and stuff that doesn't matter.... The back end offers high quality office items at slightly higher prices than some places, but it is quality. read more

Reid's is a cute little novelty shop with many party favours and odd little gifts, as well as a bunch of office supplies. Whether you're looking for a giant card, or a rubber chicken, Reid's has got what you need. I find it entertaining to stroll through Reid's. It's a pretty large store, but doesn't have much room to move around. If you meet someone halfway down an aisle, more likely than not you'll have to turn back and try a different one. I think it's amusing, being a tiny person myself. Another reason I like walking through Reid's is because they have funny things to look at. Even if I'm not buying anything I'm sure to find a way to entertain myself for a few minutes... or half an hour. They've got so much crap (I say crap because stuff and things just don't seem summarize what they offer as well as crap does), you could be looking for hours. The problem is the salespeople aren't that ambitious to help you find what you're looking for. You may very well have to spend 15 minutes in the place just to locate what you need. Another negative is that some of the items can be a little pricey. I went in to find a giant balloon for a birthday, but was disappointed at how much it would cost me. I ended up using a regular sized balloon that I already had at home instead. Reid's seems like it's better suited to entertain people walking down the street than it is for actually buying stuff. The windows of Reid's were all fogged up and my honey and I were commenting that there must have been some "action" going on in there. I half expected an erotic or adult store but what I saw instead was a store that had customer action happening. Reid's is a mishmash of everything, office, stationary, paper items, Xmas and journals but what I really got a kick out of the most was the gag area and the corner of toy novelty items. This is a large store; upon entering you are welcomed by some very entertaining gag gifts. How about "The Ex" knife holder which has knives stabbed through a human figure at five different angles, or a rubber like bowl with edges that looked like spilt milk. There is a huge aisle dedicated to hundreds of journals and diaries; this is fantastic, all in different shapes and different colours. But my favourite area which appeals to the inner child in me is the toy novelty area; I was toying between "The Giant Pipe Cleaner Party Kit" or the "Penis Cleaner" which is basically a large ring. Yes I have a warped sense of humour and yes it is just way too funny. With all these novelty items is the juxtaposition of these glass encased cabinets, under lock and key for the more upscale designer items. Four shelves devoted to solely Allesi designs and another cabinet just solely for crystal glassware. Reid's is mind boggling, it is quite an unusual store, but does not lack in entertaining you. There is more room to shop here than Steeling Home and Kricket which makes for more enjoyable shopping and I was definitely finding things that I didn't find in other stores. Definitely a place I will return to if I need a unique gift for a friend. read more

It's hard to say what they sell, it's too all over the map. The first part of the store is all party favors and goods, with cheap toys and fun things and then the second part is all stationary and pens. They have cards, scrapbooking supplies, facepaints, candy and a whole wackdoodle of things. It's fun to go look around. My problem is their staff. I've been there many times over my lifetime of living in south Calgary, and I've never had an employee there that was decent. Whenever I go in there, I'm usually ignored and I can't get help even when I go asking for it. I don't even get a nice hello when I walk in. I get rolled eyes and crossed arms. I only go in when I need to. For birthdays and Christmas, it's a pretty useful all in one store for decorating, throwing parties and presents. But expect staff that think they are better than you, it is 17th ave after all. read more

The first time I went in here, I asked a friend about it and he gave me a brief description. I found out later, that he had basically paraphrased Wendy's review about Reid's. HDU. It's like when you ask someone about a book you never read before, and they try to slyly give you the Wiki synopsis. You've been Wiki'd! Yelpiki'd? Reid's is your standard party store, with plenty of things to make your simple get-together look like you watched at least one episode of Martha Stewart Living (don't get photography tips from her, though). You've also got an array of ribald greeting cards, fake moustaches, animal masks and costumes. Staff is pretty friendly and well-versed in their wares. Not just Yelp-versed ;). read more

Strolling down 17th Avenue often results in us stopping to look at the Reid's window dressing, which is often following by a "I'm just going to pop in for a second..." Reid's is a great place for buying gifts, because they have a variety of novelty gifts as well as serious gifts like crystal and leather-bound journals. I've purchased gag gifts from Reid's before, like football key covers for my brother-in-law, and some over-the-hill gag gifts for my dad's birthday. Reid's has the best selection of cards in the city in my opinion, including serious and funny cards. It would be a great place to stop by on your way to someone's house for Christmas if you forgot to get them a gift, because it's all under one roof, even wrapping paper. They also have a big selection of party supplies like themed napkins and plates. It would take forever to see everything in Reid's, plus they always have a seasonal section, so the store changes everytime you go. You are charged a premium for these one-of-a-kind gifts, though, but sometimes it's not about the money, it's about getting the gift-buying over with in one stop! read more

In places like NYC, window displays are an art form. Reid's is Calgary's version of those very stores -- they definitely get my gold stars for Best Window Display! Every time I drive by, I always check out what they have creativity splashed all over the front (usually it's seasonal). Inside is one giant PERUSE waiting to happen. I mean, what is this store about? It's so jam-packed full of weird lil things that you couldn't possibly catch it all. I mean, primarily, if you're after a great card, you'll find it here. But maybe you need a gag gift? A novelty sensored lil figure that says obscenities (the things you wish you could sometimes say like 'wow, you're a _____bag'). Weird pens. Princessy things for lil girls. A costume for Halloween. Seasonal decor. Pinatas. Birthday/party/wedding invites, decorations, etc. Yeah, weirdness. Randomness. No rhyme or reason. But that's kinda fun and definitely worth a look. read more

We had the most unfortunate experience with our last visit to Reid's. As we've done in the past we had ordered some numbered birthday balloons for pick-up. After paying and placing them in the car the one numbered balloon popped within 2 minutes of being in the car... ripping right along the seam. The balloon had not touched anything sharp... it just ripped open. We called Reid's back right away and asked if we could come back and if they would kindly give us a replacement one. The reply by the lady on the phone was "no. That is the nature of balloons. If we wanted a new one we could purchase another one for $22." She was extremely short with me and very unsympathetic even though my husband had just left the store moments before. I was actually in disbelief. While I completely understand that balloons popping is within their nature, this happened within 2 minutes of leaving the store and was not because it was punctured. Additionally these balloons weren't cheap and the notion of simply going back in and paying another $22 10 minutes after the initial purchase seemed ludicrous. Needless to say I was not impressed with the customer service provided and unfortunately will be looking to shop elsewhere in the future. read more

We had a fantastic experience at Reid's today. Our 11 year old was buying his first fountain pen - with his own money. Staff spent nearly an hour with him, educating him, letting him write with several pens and exposing him to the array of ink colours. It was a wonderful experience for him and we have Reid's to thank for that. I will admit I had to touch a few of the beautiful papers! Remember when one bought high end paper for your resume or a special letter? Loved that! Makes me wish I did something artistic just for the pens, high end pencils and gorgeous paper. Worst place for writing instruments enthusiastic. Yesterday I bought a Lamy Swift an this pen cost me C$80.00. This pen was meant to be a gift to a friend of mine, however he already has this pen. So, I went back to Reid's (less than 24h after) to return this Lamy. The manager didn't refund me because they have a policy of no return to writing instruments. If I knew this policy at the time, I had never bought it. This store has NO focus on customer service. Thank you Reid's for the greatest experience. Enjoy the 80 dollars and the Lamy because I'll never going back into your premises. read more

Truly great place with wonderful service. Parking is a bit dodgy, but nevertheless Reid's is definitely worth a visit if you're looking for party supplies or fine writing instruments aka cool pens or really great and unique stationery (there's linnen paper, parchment paper, etc) I recently bought a fountain pen there and the person I spoke to was one of the most helpful people I ran across in a retail environment. This is my go to place for fountain pens, ink and paper. They have a good selection from everyday to limited edition pens. If they don't have what you are looking for they will track it down for you. And if you have anything that needs repairing they will handle that as well. Trish and Kari are extremely knowledgeable about their products and are a pleasure to deal with. What do I say well, I walk in the front & so far so good then get greeted by a wonderful person at the counter then it all goes tits up. The absolute disorganization of product placement, the fact that some employees don't even seem to speak English (not that matters but where serving customers is supposedly the top priority, the language spoken should be that of the country or at least City in which the shoppe is placed) & simply walks away with a dismissive attitude. Then there are the outrageous prices not that there is a legal precedent for what you must charge but when a store orders from China and Ali Express and pays $3.00 for a lot of six products then sells them at $60.00 each item it gets a little irritating. It is a shame that one wants to support local business especially a family owned Local business but the only actual merchandise that seems to be worth the money they are charging are their pens. The staff seem to completely ignore customers unless they are clearly "wealthy" in appearance, except for the young lady at the register at the front. Then there is the absolutely uncomfortable feeling one as a customer gets when they are in the store and trying to find something & they can see & hear all of the staff but one hanging around in the back talking rudely about others aren't workers supposed to be working & helping one another out? Why are you berating workers instead of helping them? I asked for help, the young lady who doesn't speak English simply said I don't know then simply walked away. Then when I asked an older lady at the back of the store she dismissed me until finally once again the short young lady in the front helped me & apologized for the wait. It seems that there is a private club of people hanging out in the back whilst one person appears to be doing everything in the front & I am confused by this. But mostly the disorganized look of everything, the fact that not a single person working in the back seems to be interested whatsoever in helping customers unless they drive an expensive car, the blatant dismissiveness of those in the back will keep me shopping at Stealing Home down the street where you pay a far more reasonable price for the same products without the rudeness of the so called family business. I independently review stores over a several month period to see what the real habits and business practises of stores are before reviewing and giving my opinion & I can tell you that while there are some neat things in the store paying seven times the price and being treated so dismissively at that shows me the "family" business here is only interested in making money money money & have forgotten their Family Business ideals that made the original Reid's so loved & well respected in the past. I had a great first experience at Reid's. I went looking for a fountain pen to give to my boyfriend for his birthday. After first walking through the mountains of stuff piled at the front of the store (including lots of notebooks, knick knacks, and things that should never leave the store) we made it through to the back where all the stationary supplies were located. This part of the store was not crowded at all, instead very clean and well lit to help you decide on your personal pen. I had only walked a few feet into this section of the store before someone came and asked if I needed help with anything. Thank goodness she did! There is so much choice here, it totally blew my mind. There are lots of pens in tall glass cases, with price tags anywhere from 30$ to over 1000$. The worker who helped me, Tricia, was absolutely wonderful. I told her my budget (not over 100$) and that I was looking for a pen for my boyfriend's birthday. Right away, she brought out a 30$ pen in a gray color. When I said I was looking for something a little different but that gray was his favourite color, she took it and ran with it. Within about 20 minutes she had shown me pens made with aluminum, brushed silver, black lacquer, all between about 80-120$. I narrowed it down to a few that I thought he would really like. Tricia then put away the "no's" and came out with a few more in the same style as the ones I had narrowed it down to. She told me that the one I really liked was German made and a very good pen, even if it wasn't as pricey as some of the other ones she had shown me. I really appreciated her honesty because I wouldn't have been able to tell the difference. After less than a half hour, I was out of there with a fabulous birthday present. The best part was that she extended the exchange policy for me in case he doesn't like it (his birthday is in the middle of May, so she extended the policy from 7 days to close to 2 months) and wants to switch. They don't have a return policy, it's exchanges only, but I would gladly go back and spend more money there. read more
