I would strongly recommend NOT renting from Strive, also known as Latch Realty. I lived in one of…read moretheir properties for a little over two years and by the end, I was beyond frustrated with the lack of communication and maintenance.
When I first moved in, the apartment was absolutely filthy and I spent almost a week cleaning it myself. There was dried dog pee on the walls/baseboards, two broken blinds, broken glass in the dishwasher, mold in the fridge and washing machine, rolled blunts left in the kitchen cabinets, a hole punched in the pantry door, and the HVAC filter was literally black with about half an inch of dust and debris on it. The property also had an ongoing rat problem that neighboring tenants on the same property told me had been an issue for years.
The AC was probably my biggest issue. It had problems basically the entire time I lived there and was never permanently fixed. I discovered the AC didn't work just two weeks into my tenancy and was given the runaround when I requested immediate assistance getting it repaired. During one heat wave, my apartment got up to 93°F inside and I had dogs living with me, including my allergen detection service dog. I had to call out of work and buy my own window unit because I was concerned about the heat becoming unsafe for me and my dogs. Strive also declined my request for reimbursement for the window unit while I was waiting for them to address the AC.
Communication with Strive was horrendous and continued to go downhill throughout my tenancy. Despite reaching out multiple times, I would receive intermittent communication from Jen, the office manager, and Brian with maintenance. I was given the runaround several times, especially with the broken AC.
After Zef, their old maintenance guy, left the company, maintenance went completely downhill. Zef was honestly great and clearly kept things afloat. He communicated, showed up, and actually fixed things in a timely manner. After he left, I regularly had maintenance requests go unanswered or unresolved, and getting anyone to communicate with me was incredibly frustrating.
The part that really got me was when I moved out. After being handed a filthy apartment when I moved in, I made sure to deep clean everything before I left. They still took $100 out of my security deposit for a generic "cleaning fee" and never explained what supposedly needed to be cleaned.
Getting my security deposit back was another headache. I surrendered the apartment and provided my forwarding address on July 20th. By August 14th, I still hadn't received my deposit or an itemized list of deductions, so I contacted Strive. They apologized for the delay and told me the check would be prepared and mailed. When I finally received it, the paperwork stated that it had been mailed on July 28th, but the envelope was postmarked August 15th. Make of that what you will.
Also, beware of the steep rent increases. They tried to raise my rent by $300/month upon the second renewal of my lease, but I decided to move instead. After I moved out, the unit was listed for $400/month more than I had been paying. In my opinion, that property is nowhere near worth $2,200/month, especially with the ongoing AC and maintenance issues. By the end of my tenancy, it felt like maximizing profit via rent mattered more than actually maintaining the property.
After two years of dealing with them, I would never rent from Strive again. Save yourself the headache and look elsewhere.
