Under PT Xu, Ben, Nurse Annie, and OT Debbie's professional guidance and instruction, my older family member has already been making remarkable progress and now can throw/kick balls/balloons, do sit-to-stands, sing & speak loudly, brush teeth, comb hair, and spends most of the day mentally & physically stimulated & engaged in activities rather than sleeping on the bed. Our older family member's progress would not have been possible without their expertise, support, and perseverance. Nurse Annie is incredibly compassionate, smart, and detail-oriented & improved our family member's lung function and bedsore treatment/prevention. Debbie & Ben are diligent and creative with their PT/OT approaches, tailoring it to each older adult's interests and abilities. Stephanie is meticulous in cleansing and taught us all sorts of techniques to more feasibly do regular cleanings. We are grateful for amazing and experienced healthcare personnel like Dr. Xu, Ben, Debbie, Stephanie, and Nurse Annie who go the extra mile to take care of their patients. I am recently home after a two week stay following surgery for a broken femur. I think I will…read morebreak down my review by area, as the rating is very different according to what was going on. PT and OT: Excellent!! 5 stars. I can't say enough good things about them. You don't always get the same one day to day, but it really didn't matter. They are wonderful . Facility: The rooms are kept fairly clean, with staff sweeping, mopping and emptying the trash twice a day. However, it's obvious that the owners don't really care about fixing minor issues. The pull for the light switch over my bed was broken, so someone had rolled plastic bags into a rope and secured it to the end. The curtain that separated my bed from my roommate's didn't go all the way to the end of the wall, as it wasn't attached to the rings. Not too much of a problem except when I had graduated to using a commode, which was on that side of the bed. I felt a little exposed. One of the ice machines was broken the entire length of my stay, and I was told it hadn't been working for some time before that. So sometimes you were able to get an ice pack to put on the incision and sometimes you weren't. Care Nurses: Most are kind and caring, only one or two that weren't. I was surprised that they aren't taught to greet you when they come into your room. If I'd pulled the call cord, they would come in and just say, "You called?" Not much warmth. And they seemed woefully understaffed. Not ONCE in 2 weeks did a CNA offer to wash my hands, and there was no hand sanitizer within reach. After a week, one of them wiped me down with a damp towel, no soap. I had my husband bring me wipes which I used. I also was surprised at the lack of training that they had regarding moving my body for a diaper change. You need to roll onto your side, so the diaper can be placed under you. At first, they would push on the surgical incisions on my hip and thigh, causing me to scream in pain. I ended up showing each CNA the pictures from the x-rays of the break, to hopefully get them to be more careful. By the end of the 2 weeks, I had them trained. Mostly they came pretty quickly when I called for a change; however, twice I had to wait an hour after a bowel movement. And of course if you then pee during the wait? Messy. I was told my CNA was with another patient. Fine, but there were staff talking and laughing the whole time in the corridor. Get one of them to help out. RNs: Mostly caring, some concern, but they sure aren't warm and fuzzy. There seemed to be a breakdown in communication sometimes between the nurses and doctors, and between shifts. Eye drops were scheduled 2x day for scratch in eye. First day yes, then for 5 days nothing. I had my own eyedrops which I used, although they weren't the medicated kind I was supposed to be getting. Pain meds were to be every 6 hours. Sometimes it took 7-7 1/2. Once I was told I didn't have anymore by an aide, then the nurse came back from lunch and said sorry, my fault. The meds that I normally take daily at home were also on my schedule. Sometimes I got them, sometimes I didn't. I finally had my husband bring them from home and took them myself. I had both a heat rash, and a rash brought on by an allergy to the adhesive in bandages. When I asked, some action was taken, but it didn't become a part of the routine. No one asked about it, and I had to keep requesting the cream. Food: Ugh. Very little fresh fruit, overcooked vegetables, and most everything looked extremely unappealing. Friends and family would take turns bringing me lunch, which was usually enough to have half for dinner too. The kitchen was shut down for at least 2 days for a health issue. They set up in the courtyard and served hard boiled eggs and plain bread for dinner and breakfast. Noise: It's hard enough to get sleep when you are in pain from surgery, and I am glad they would come in when it was time for my meds, but the noise level at night was unbearable. It seemed like the staff were standing near the doorway laughing and talking-like a party was going on. Many nights a patient would call out "Shut up". I got noise canceling headphones with a white noise app on my phone, and that helped. I would certainly never go there again, or let any of the family.

My dad had to stay here for almost 2 weeks for rehab after being transferred here from Kaiser. The place was clean and is in a really good neighborhood and is within walking distance to restaurants and shopping. The CNAs and nurses were very nice. I forgot one of the nurses names, I think it's Helen. She brought my dad a packet of hot chocolate for later and always said hello when she saw him. Another CNA or Nurse named Star was also great with my dad. My dad was well taken care of here. If you ever need to put your loved one in a care home whether it's temporary or permanently, I trust this facility.

Instead of providing a clear rehabilitation plan, setting measurable goals, and actively working through obstacles, there was often little guidance on how patients could advance toward recovery. Equally concerning, the physicians appeared reluctant to provide clear medical opinions regarding therapy needs, rehabilitation potential, and the most appropriate path to recovery, despite being in the best position to guide these decisions. A rehabilitation facility should be focused on problem-solving, collaboration, and helping patients achieve the highest level of independence possible. Unfortunately, our experience reflected a lack of leadership, coordination, and commitment to patient progress.

I have found Kim, the Director of Nursing at Empress, to maintain the highest quality of care for all residents (patients). She continually strives to ensure her staff follow her high standards of care. When I was choosing a nursing home for my Aunt who has had Alzheimer's over 20 years, my first choice was Empress Care. I knew from my previous interactions as a Department of Health investigator, my Aunt would have great care. They have improved my Aunt's life greatly ensuring she walks several times a week with staff. She was a walker her whole life, but then became bedridden with her last caretaker, so to see her waking again is wonderful. Whenever my Aunt states she needs to use the bathroom, staff bring her immediately to the bathroom and give her the opportunity to try to use the toilet, even though most times she is incontinent. When they would take her to dialysis they'd leave her in the cold for way longer then she should've been & she got a pneumonia twice while being there. So so much more. DO NOT SEND YOUR LOVED ONE HERE !!! SHUT THIS PLACE DOWN.
