Room was large (and AC was working fine) but decor was random and impersonal. King-sized bed was very comfortable and tiled shower bathroom was clean and functional. Note that the Inn is FOR SALE (last 500 days), so this may explain lack of attention to anything more than basic accommodation. I was unable to speak to anyone in management about having a late checkin -- they only respond to email (not phone) and not promptly and not on my first attempt. This was very odd. For the price ($281, with taxes), I think it should have been a lot nicer. Town is very quiet (actually pretty dead) and many businesses appear shuttered. There is however, a lovely park at the end of the property (after the tree swing) called Paradise Park. This made for a nice walk in the morning. I was glad we discovered this on our own as the innkeepers were non-existent. Pleasant enough, but .... not exactly what I was hoping for at this price.

A real treat for city-folk!) The staff is friendly, but not intrusive, and helpful when asked for advice about the area. While the Inn is pricey, you get what you pay for. Our room (Room 7 on the 3rd floor) was huge, with a mix of country and mid-century furniture, a very comfy king size bed with crisp clean-smelling sheets, bureau, and windows on two sides looking out over the street and grounds. It was painted a muted light green with white moldings and doors, and wide pine floors. There's a big LCD tv on the wall, with cable as well as a blu-ray player with access to Netflix, Pandora and YouTube (if you have accounts.) Also a few dozen movies in the Library to borrow (we watched a couple movies.) I peeked into several other rooms, and i don't think you could go wrong with any of them, all huge and very nicely appointed. The room was immaculate and also featured radiant floors in the 4-peice classically styled bath, which included a claw foot rub (outfitted with bath salts), a subway-tiled shower, and a quirky exposed beam running through one corner of the space. They have L'Occitane products A small vase of fresh flowers in the bathroom was a nice touch. The room had an efficient, quiet spit AC / heat unit, as well as supplemental old-style radiators (for winter stays). There is free, open WiFi throughout the house. The continental breakfast was what you'd expect - bagels, pastries, yogurt, cereal and boiled eggs. It's included and held in the spacious dining room. There is tea and coffee available there 24-hours. For the money (this isn't a cheap place), it would have been nice to have something like hot eggs, bacon set out as well, but the breakfast was perfectly in line with many B&Bs. There's also cookies left out in the lobby all afternoon, till they are gone, a nice touch as well. There's also a library / living room on the first floor to relax or read some of the volumes, and two porches as well. There were a couple small issues, which i wouldn't count as major: The windows didn't have screens, so you couldn't really open the windows to let the cool night air in (my partner wondered if the historic nature of the building was the reason), there wasn't a mini-fridge in the room, which i really like (it could fit in the closet easily). A note on the town itself: While the town itself is somewhat of one-stoplight town, there are a few dining spots around (inexplicably, no restaurants are open anywhere around on Monday night!), the longest covered bridge in the world, the Simon Pearce glass HQ, a Harpoon brewery, and the sort of new agey but fun "Path of Life" sculpture garden, also within a half hour drive: Hanover NH (Dartmouth College), quaint Woodstock, VT, and Quechee Gorge. So there's plenty to do for a weekend trip. In fact, we did quite alot in our two night stay, and my only regret in staying there was i wasn't there longer to have a change to just relax and read, walk around the pond out back, and generally enjoy the house. And if it hadn't rained the 2nd night, i'd have liked another chance to star-gaze, since i didn't have a wish ready when i say the one shooting star the first night.

The innkeeper was very friendly and personable and I highly recommend staying here if you are visiting the area. The main building has four guest quarters on the second floor. We had a HUGE room complete with sitting area, large windows and a spacious adjoining bathroom. The rest of the main building consisted of a large entry room, receiving room with lots of Vermont products for sale, kitchen, dining, game room, and a larger family type room. The whole house was surrounded by deep wrap around porches. There is also a cottage with two additional guest quarters, barns, a screened gazebo, a swimming pond full of frogs, horses, and some additional outbuildings. The property backs up to Quechee Gorge. Breakfast was different and very tasty each day. The first day was a spinach and egg dish, served with granola, fruit, coffee and yogurt. The second day was stuffed baked french toast with the same accompaniments. The innkeeper made reservations for us for dinner the second night we were there, just another great touch. The decor of the rooms was a little more modern than most B&Bs and I rather enjoyed it. Our room was outfitted with two nice leather chairs with ottomans, a substantial king sized bed with white, red and black linens, and some interesting artwork (little pewter and copper figurines on a shelf, etc). Such a nice time, I think we will splurge next summer at full price to get a weekend away here.

We had the top accommodation ( nicknamed the penthouse ) all to ourselves and at first glance, we found it to be really nice. The building itself is quite old, but the space is overall well maintained and the rooms were large as well as nice. The space had more than enough room for all of us as well as a decently sized kitchen and a living room. The amount of room we were given was more than sufficient for 8, but we were without water for the entire stay. It was revealed after we checked out that a plumber had uncovered a leak in the pipes which was why the water was failing to get to our unit at the top, but overall, it left us feeling very discouraged as we couldn't shower, wash dishes, or even flush our toilets. We were compensated $100 at the end and were allowed to use another room's shower for the second night ( not the first though since they were fully booked ), but the first night definitely felt rough as we had skiied and snowboarded all day without the ability to shower. The food for breakfast was pretty decent - I enjoyed the complementary meal both days, the first day being a buffet style and the second day being more of an order whatever you'd like due to the smaller crowd. It was pretty standard with eggs, bacon / sausage, pancakes / French toast, and a variety of juices as well as coffee. I would only not recommend the French toast as it was just like bread dipped in egg rather than having the actual flavor of French toast. Overall, I wouldn't mind booking the space again as the staff were kind enough and doing their best, but probably not with the penthouse out of fear of not having water again.

This almost extinct religious sect has influenced our culture in many ways we can imagine. From the exquisitely simple and sturdy Shaker furniture, to the development of Pentecostal charismatic religion, to some of the sturdiest architecture in a new nation, to the notion of equality of the sexes. The Shaker Village in Enfield is one of three large communities that were founded in the early 1800s. As their community expanded, new colonies expanded along the shore of Lake Mascoma. Their growth made possible the economic development of the entire area, the advent of the railway in Enfield, the construction of a bridge over Lake Mascoma to bring goods to the rail, and the growth of chattel industries in the area. All of this is eloquently stated by the guides in their tour of the village. Their dedication to the preservation of Shaker legacy is praiseworthy. The tours are fascinating and instructional. The shop downstairs is magnificent. And their use of the second floor of the lodge as an inn is a superb idea. Worth every second while visiting the area. It has become one of the "must see" places to take my guests when they visit.

You enter at the front and the tickets are sold in the gift shop immediately on your right. The lady selling the tickets was friendly and chatted with us. She said there was a tour starting at 11 a.m. Another guy wandered in who turned out to be the guide. After a little confusion, he led us through the building to a sunlit room towards the back. Here they had some chairs set up facing a TV. He first discussed a bit of general Shaker background with us and then started the ~ 10-minute video about them. It was interesting. The video ended at about the same time that another group of 3 German tourists was escorted back by the ticket lady. Our guide seemed a bit torn, and asked if we wanted to see the video again. We deferred, figuring that we could wander around outside for a few minutes (it was still only around 10:40 a.m.) before the tour. He then started the video for the new group. We walked around some of the buildings and took a few photos now that the morning fog had burned off. We then went back in and asked the ticket lady about the tour, as it was then around 10:50 a.m. She said that it may have already started, so we walked back to the video room. The guide was indeed discussing a topo map of the site with the Germans. We joined in and the tour then began. This was interesting; he discussed how the building was laid out (mostly to allow separation of the male and female Shakers). He showed us the basement workshops / storage areas as well as the common dining room. An older couple passed us at one point early in the tour and headed inside. A couple of minutes later, the ticket lady led the couple back to the tour group. They had intended to join the 11 a.m. tour (at 11 a.m.) and were somewhat irate that they had missed part of it. The staff tried to be helpful and offered them a refund, but in the end they settled down and just joined the tour. I sympathized with the couple in this case - if you state that you have an 11 a.m. tour, it seems like you should at least designate where to meet (presumably at 11 a.m.). The tour here just seemed to coalesce at some time in the neighborhood of 11 a.m. We continued touring the ground floor and then made our way upstairs to the 2nd floor, where there was an even larger central room for worship services. The way the builders included cabinets in almost every part of the interior walls, and how they arranged shutters for the windows, was quite interesting. Note that one of the 'simple gifts' that the builders were not able to include here was an elevator. Hence, if you have mobility issues, climbing the stairs between floors may be something you should factor in to your planning. The tour then headed next door to a church that the subsequent owners (a Catholic organization) had built. The interior was interesting with plenty of stained glass. Our guide wrapped up the tour with quick stops at a couple of mostly gutted outbuildings. It was about 12:10 p.m. at that point. I thought this was an interesting site. You should just allow some flexibility on tour timings.
