The whiting was horrible, it tasted old. (Came with 1000 fries) The fish and chips was okay. ( came with 2000 fries) The mushrooms were horrible The shrimp was good They give soooooo many fries because they know the fish is gross. Maybe one day yall won't be so nasty. The service was great though! read more

Ray's Shrimp House - Rays fry to meat ratio. Don't nobody want ALL of these fries, I'm throwing 85% of these fries in the garbage. - Seafood Near Me - Gary, Indiana

This is my favorite fried shrimp place! They have everything you need for fried fish dinners. You have to wait for you food but it always comes out fresh. read more

Well my Mom's appetite has been sort of poor lately and I knew that she was tired of that hospital food. I know that she really enjoys Ray's shrimp so I placed our order and surprised her with it when I went to visit. I phoned the order in and at first I thought that I might have called the wrong number because the person who answered the phone just said hello; I paused for a moment and said I'd like to place an order please. Sorry, yet I digress ; I picked up our food and went straight to the hospital. I ordered Mom a pound of shrimp and for me, a half pound of catfish nuggets. Mixed sauce on everything (hot & mild) even the fries. I was so hungry that I failed to take any new pictures of the food. My Mom was so happy that I brought her some Ray's shrimp because it's her favorite and she hadn't eaten all day. The meal was delicious as usual and we both enjoyed it immensely. Ray's shrimp house is not a sit down kinda restaurant but there is some seating inside; but I guess when your food is that Good you tend to overlook all that stuff. Overall experience is four & a half Stars if I could give a half. read more

I had not been to Rays for 20 years. I made the drive to get shrimp and gizzards because they were always the best. Nothing has changed! The lady who took my order was so nice and friendly. I only waited 10-15 minutes for hot fresh food. Still the best shrimp and gizzards I ever had!! I will be back soon!! read more

"Eeeeeyuck" doesn't even begin to cover it. My family in-law, who I'm now actively questioning, swore this place was the best and I had to try it. The reviews seemed promising, but what arrived in the boxes was an edible tragedy. It went like this: Fish and Chips: Nasty AF. Catfish Nuggets: Nasty AF. 1/2 Whiting: Nasty AF. 1/2 Shrimp: Nasty AF. The Fries: Yes, even the humble potato turned its back on me. Nasty AF. This establishment is screaming, "We've been here for years, we're seasoned pros!" but their food is whispering, "We gave up trying in 2003." My $40 was not spent on dinner, it was spent on a cautionary tale. I recommend you eat literally anywhere else, perhaps the McDonald's up the road. read more

I was a little worried about trying this place based on some of the reviews, but I visited today. It was absolutely delicious. I had to call a couple times before they answered, but they were extremely pleasant. They said my order would be ready in about ten minutes. I got there a couple minutes early, but they hadn't dropped my order. I had to wait about ten minutes or so after I arrived. They have a fairly small menu (perch, catfish, shrimp, chicken and some sides like fries, mushrooms, cheese sticks, poppers)...I ordered the perch and fried chicken gizzards. Since I had a 25 minute drive to get home I tasted a piece of fish in the parking lot. It was so good. It was crispy and hot! The only critique I have is that they need to season the batter more. Even though the fish needed more salt, it was still delicious! The staff were polite and friendly. The restaurant lobby is tiny, but they have chairs for people while they wait. Not really dine-in. Would definitely recommend. read more

Ray's legendary shrimp is worth traveling to.I eat there everything I'm in town. Delicious!

My friend is from Gary and swears by this place - to swing through on our way back from Chicago to Indianapolis. It is a "hood-spot" to grab-and-go (no dine-in available). The service shears good in the handful of times I've visited. The food, itself, is good (3.5 to a 4 out of 5). read more

Literally thee best shrimp ever! Anytime I'm in town this is a MUST have. We visited twice in one day this last trip. Don't let the photos fool you, the shrimp and sauce are delicious. My only complaint is, I wish they offered sides like greens or green beans. We seriously just be eating shrimp with crackers & nothing else at times. The servers are polite. It's best if you call your order in. This place is so popular the line is always to the door & crowded inside. read more

It is quick and delicious seafood fast food place. I use it as my fish place especially 1/2 pound ocean perch.

One of the long time traditions in Gary. I had made this my go to spot when I didn't want to drive to Bob's Shrimp but the last 2 times were a bit disappointing Last time I had the shrimp, which is the only thing I order, I had to drown the shrimp in sauce to give it a flavor. (THE SAUCE is a tradition of its own)This time I noticed they changed the batter and are now using planko I don't like it! The flavor is STILL missing! I don't think I will give it a 3rd strike! It's really too bad because I like the easy to eat on the go container the shrimp comes in BUT $20.00 per pound doesn't justify a convenient container over taste. Anyone have suggestions for good shrimp in Gary area other than Ray's or will I have to make the drive to Bob's Shrimp when I'm in town? read more

Never disappoints! One of the few places in Indiana that is following Covid protocol. The patrons were wearing masks and social distancing while awaiting their orders. As for the food, can't beat a pound of shrimp and fries. Their sauces are great, I like to mix them. Shout out to Ralphie! Hey Ralphie! read more

Just had this for the first time with a group. We had fish, shrimp, gizzards and livers. All of it was good!!! Not a lot of seasoning which the flavor of the meat came through. Plus you can dip them in one of the sauces which are awesome!!! My friends have told me about this place and I never seem to make it over there. It if it always tasted like this I will be going out of my way to have it again!!! read more

Like most establishments of this sort depending on which day you decide to visit can depend on the taste & quality of your food. With that said this is 1 1/2 of the best fried shrimp places in northwest Indiana. I have been coming here since I was a child & whenever I'm anywhere near this neighborhood I never hesitate to stop & grab a full pound of this expensive fried shrimp. At almost $20 for a pound it's quite expensive however I love it. I always choose it with mild sauce on the shrimp & oddly enough it's served in a Chinese to go food container. The secret is to open the container as soon as possible otherwise the steam within the container will cause the shrimp to become a tad soggy. They too have daily food specials but I believe it never includes the shrimp. After all these years embarrassing as it may be to admit I've never tried any other dish other than the shrimp. It's made to order & quite simply is the bomb. read more

The jumbo shrimp are not jumbo more like medium. Also the breading was soggy not worth the $20 a pound

This is one of my important stops when I come home to the region! Forget the fact that they have plexiglass barrier between you and the servers. They're just trying to stay safe. And if they're safe, they're back there cooking up some of THE BEST food you'll EVER have! They have daily specials so that's great. But no frills. Just good food. Try the mushrooms, catfish nuggets and fries, and make sure you get at least 1lb of shrimp if you have to share. And get hot and mild sauce, you'll want it. So good! read more

My must have whenever I am back in town! All I can say is mild sauce!! I always order the pound of shrimp and sometimes I'll get fish and chips to have later. This time I got the fish and chips for the road and got the shrimp for later so I left the mild sauce off and had it on the side. I reheated it in the oven and added the mild sauce and it was just as good. I have heard that the cooks changed but I cant tell, maybe its because I only get Rays when I come to town. read more

My girlfriend picked up a catfish filet dinner for me, and when she arrived home I asked her if she had ordered the right thing and she said yes. When I opened bag the catfish was steak and not filet. Not only were the cuts wrong the cuts were super thin. I tasted one of the fries and it was soaked in grease and had no salt. The coleslaw tasted fishy as well. This is my second time eating there and both times have been horrible. Save your money and go somewhere else. read more

So I'm 50 years old and I been coming here same spot same location since I was 18. The shrimp taste damn near the same but they sold the business and the service is crappy as fuck. I'm from Chicago. That's why I love the food, the food remind of Chicago food. shout out to Lawrence Fish-man in blue Island.

Shrimp by the Lb! That's how we do it at Ray's Shrimp House! In my circle, everyone knows that if you have a few extra dollars and would love some good food, get to Ray's Shrimp House when in Gary. I am sure they have catfish, whiting, etc. However, I only get the shrimp by the 1/2, 3/4 of 1LB. God, it is so good! forget what you know, this is it when you what fried shrimp in GI. The shrimp is always so tender and juicy. The breading is always cooked to perfection and the sauce on top make it all finger-smacking good. Now, like I said, Ray's Shrimp House knows their worth and will charge you a pretty penny. However, I do not know anyone who has complained too much about the prices. You get what you pay for. I love Ray's Shrimp House and so glad I do not live closer to this location. I would really, really start putting on the Lbs and having less change in my pockets each pay day! read more
