This place is pretty good if you are looking for a home-style old-fashioned diner. We were hoping for some po'boys and we usually frequent Papa Joes po'boys in Ruston but they were closed for the day. With some out of towners visiting and really craving some Louisiana Cajun food, we yelped the next best thing. Ray's PeGe popped up on my Yelp app. The reviews seemed pretty decent. So off we went for the 20 minute trek to get some cajun food. We walked in to Ray's a bit surprised at first, some of the lights are missing outside and it just says Ray's P i think. We were instantly greeted by a friendly staff member. She took our order at the counter, as the signs prompt you to order first. We saw the paper menu had all sorts of seafood po'boys (oyster, crawfish, fried shrimp, grilled shrimp) but on the real menu only shrimp was shown. The owner came over and said that only shrimp was available. They told us the grilled was better and bigger. So we all ordered the grilled shrimp, come to find out, they were all out of them. So our orders were switched to fried shrimp in the end. It was kind of a challenge to order as we split our orders and had a small mishap, miscommunication with the worker at the front... but it all got figured out. We soon after sat at a booth. The food came out quick and we all had no complaints about our fried shrimp po'boys, mashed potatoes, green beans, and sweet tea. Everything was delicious. The owner (I think she was) came over and chatted us up a bit, was very nice, and offered us some homemade fresh ice cream to finish our meals. We left pleasantly happy and satisfied. However, was it the best po'boy or food I've had? Not really. Was it worth the 20 minute drive? I doubt it. But overall, it's worth it if hungry and in the area. read more

A local favorite. Famished, as I was passing through Monroe, I yelped and was led to this place. Some people seem to think this is some really awesome food. I purchased a shrimp po'boy and, it was fried shrimp on a sam's club bleached, generic style hoagie and served with frozen french fries. My girlfriend, got the catfish option with curly fries (which were also from a bag). Not impressed, my girlfriend puked later. Fast-food with a personable old building and a loyal fan-base. I guess what I'm trying to articulate is I was expecting something 'home-made' or 'authentic' and what I got was Wal-mart deli grade food and styrofoam containers. couldn't drive through louisiana without chowing down on a poboy...ray's pege was the best possible place to stop at! as well as the only one open past 5 pm on a sunday. the restaurant is very quaint. the staff were super polite and friendly; the cashier served my drinks (DO try their sweet tea), brought out my food, and even gave me a free sample of their homemade ice cream- which is probably some genius marketing scheme because i left with a whole cup of the vanilla. i ordered the fried shrimp poboy and my boyfriend got the roast beef poboy, which is what they're famous for. personally i preferred the shrimp poboy to the roast beef. bun toasted to perfection with melt in your mouth shrimp, i contemplated ordering another. the roast beef was tasteless without the gravy, which they give you a cup of with every order along with straight or curly fries. the fries are meh but the quality of their seafood sandwiches (at least) leveled out the mediocrity of the other food i had. i promised the cashier i'd stop by again if i was ever in town- if only for the fried shrimp and homemade ice cream :P read more

Disclaimer: I'm no expert on po-boys... in fact, this was my first one. We stopped in Monroe for the night en route from San Diego to Atlanta in June, and some quick Google searching turned up Ray's as a lunch option for the next morning. Beef po-boys, home-cut fries and the fantastic brown gravy contributed to us eating way too much food. I'd read the bread pudding was good too, but seriously, we were stuffed. Simple, but delicious, and worth a stop if you're in the area. read more

We pulled into the parking lot while talking about the nifty retro sign that has been there since I was a kid and saw the lady at the counter of the walk up window staring out at the green Mini Cooper we drive. It was as if she just saw a spaceship land in her parking lot amid the behemoth pickup trucks and SUV's. This place hasn't changed much in the decade since I last went here, but somehow I remember it being better. My grandmother makes roast that's got more subtle flavor than the roast beef here. Got to love your meat, what can I say? Also, the gravy has got a lot of starch or flour in it, and not any of the dripping. Not expecting au jus, like NOLA but definitely something substantial. Regardless it is part of the culture here. I would like to see it update just some of the recipes, and fix the outdoor seating--that looks like crap. Plus it would be nice if people smiled more, but maybe it was the rain. read more

Gravy and fries. That alone should be enough reason to visit Ray's. A small dive of a place that has some of the best food in the area with a great staff and quick service. Ray's is one of those places that doesn't bother with menus, when you walk in the door just look at the board and decide what you want before you sit down anywhere you like. The lucky ones will get Debbie as their server that not only treats you like family while you're there, but kinda makes you miss her when you have to leave. We headed to Ray's PeGe for ice cream with my husband's side of the family when we were visiting a couple of weeks ago! The building is small and has a definite "Mom and Pop" feel, and had a really old, spinning sign in the parking lot reminiscent of the 60's diners and dives. The sign needs some repairs, but it was nostalgic to look at and imagine the teenie-boppers who would cruise up to Ray's PeGe for burgers and poboys so many years ago! You know a place has excellent food if it lasts for 40+ years! As you enter the restaurant, a large menu is up high on the wall. We were there for ice cream, so the kids and adults ordered either chocolate and vanilla twist cones, or cups, and I decided to try the strawberry Sundae, and our son tried the strawberry milk shake. There was steady lines of people coming and going to either pick up and order or place an order to wait on. They also have a walk up window where you can order and wait outside or in your car. The ice cream took about 10-15 minutes to come out to our table. There were 8 of us. I was delighted to see a beautiful strawberry Sundae coming to me, and the twisted cones looked so yummy! I was unfortunately disappointed in my Strawberry Sundae, because it was not real strawberries. The pecan nuts on the Sundae tasted stale, and the fake strawberry syrup was watery and did not taste good at all. I really really like the vanilla ice cream, however, and so I did enjoy that part of the dessert. I tried my husband's vanilla cone, and loved it, and that is why I'm still giving them the 5 stars. My son did not like his strawberry milkshake very much either, and that was because of that watery fake strawberry syrup they used to make it. Real strawberries would have made both of our items taste great! The ice cream is top quality and very rich, creamy, and delicious! Overall, I really was impressed with this place, and my husband has been going here for ice cream for most of his life! He has special memories from going out to Ray's PeGe, and so it was a great experience overall. My recommendation is good and high, but I do not recommend the strawberry Sundae. read more

Just passing through on our way to Dallas--the gravy that comes with the Po-boy is as good as everyone says, and the bread is also excellent. I had the roast beef and husband had the Philly. I was super happy with both, but frankly I could have just short-cut the whole process and ordered a pint of gravy as a beverage. Such a nice alternative to road-trip fast food. read more

I have some of the best childhood memories of eating here. The roast beef po-boys with gravy on the side were the ultimate good food. The bread was always just perfectly crusty and soft at the same time. I've been eating at Ray's PeGe since the ... wow... the 70's I guess. I still go there when I'm home. Atmosphere is diner-city but the food is so good. You gotta get the fries too. If you like seafood, get a half-n-half dressed (that's fried shrimp on one end and fried oysters on the other with lettuce, etc.) Okay. Great. I'm hungry now and about 8 hours from Ray's. We had a shrimp po boy & a ribeye po boy and my mom said it was the best she'd ever had mind you these were our first ever but in either case the food was very good. Found this place as we were passing through on our way home from vacation. We will definitely make it a regular stop when traveling through LA. It's about as close to home cooking as you can get. I have no idea what a PeGe is, but this place is wildly popular among Monroyans and is well known for its roast beef po-boys. I wouldn't say their po-boys are the best I've ever had (I'm from south Louisiana so I've had many good po-boys over my lifetime), but I've yet to find better in the Monroe area. The gravy is awesome. Unfortunately they don't have any seafood po-boys which I love. Other than that it's mostly just your typical diner fare; good burgers, sandwiches, fries, etc; I think they even serve breakfast if I'm not mistaken. It's located way out on the east end of town, almost in Schwarz, and it's very small and crowded on the inside and usually hard to find a seat. I recommend calling ahead for takeout. read more

This is a wonderful hole-in-the-wall place with amazing Po-boys. Whenever I am in town, I have to indulge in a delectable half shrimp, half oyster po-boy. They have regular large french fries, but I would definitely recommend to get the curly-q's instead. Yummmmmmmm. I love the po-boys here. And the gravy. Dipping my fries in the gravy. The ice cream-soft serve. I miss this place. And always make an attempt to eat there when I go visit my dad. NOW, it's dirty, and you usually have to wait for a table, so don't expect fast, and don't expect a nice place. It's an OLD fast food place. Visiting Monroe for a wedding and stopped here for a lunch. They handled our group of 12 with no issues. Great shrimp PO Boy and fries with gravy. Great sweet tea as well. I've had this place twice since I moved to Monroe and it doesn't disappoint! I've never even heard of an open face cheeseburger before, coming from Lafayette, LA, until I was recommended this place. The lady working the register was so sweet and service was good. After we finished our meal, we were so full and satisfied but the lady offered us a sample of their homemade ice cream.... Down and dirty hole-in-the wall burger and sandwich joint. It's a tradition in Monroe and it's easy to see how the place has survived so long. Do a couple things really well and try to keep the quality high. The place is straight out of the 1950's and has had exactly zero remodels in the last 60 years from my observations. I love places like this! My shrimp po-boy was great and the burgers, and other food was all good to great. I hear they have a two for one on Tuesdays that would probably be something I would search out regularly if I lived in Monroe. Worth a stop by for sure if you are in the area and want to grab a quick down and dirty meal. read more

Had a burger, fries and shake...... Everything was delicious. Fries were some of the best I've had in Monroe. The service is a bit slow but good. Hamburger seems to be frozen and reheated- not made fresh. This isn't what they specialize in, so I understand. Can't wait to try a po-boy next time. read more

Get the Roast Beef Po Boy and fries with extra gravy. YUM! It's the only thing I've tried and don't really need to try anything else. Unlike most places around here, they don't treat you like you are inconveniencing them when you walk through the door. Years ago, when Ray was still running the joint, it was pretty good. Once he retired, it went down hill fast. The icecream is still top notch though. Better poboys are right up the road at Danken Trail. Someone mentioned the BBQ sandwiches. They are really cheap. 3 for $1, but I have got them 4 for $1 before. Buy a dozen and eat them at the football game, or in the boat while fishing. This stuff comes premade out of a tub. Smoke a pork shoulder yourself and you'll blow them away easily if you have any bbq sense at all. After Ray retired and sold out I have not been back. read more

If you are traveling though Monroe and are hungry This is where you should go. I grew up eating the incredible Po Boys and Fries. I took my wife and kids there on our recent trip to La. and introduced them to the one place in my hometown I had to eat at. It was funny seeing the looks on the kids faces when I ordered for them. There was only one thing I wanted them to try. The Roast beef Po Boys were the same flavor and freshness as when I was kid. PERFECT. All was quiet as we ate except for the Mmmm...Ahhhhhh.....Oh My! Just Perfect........The gravy brought back memories of college back in the NLU days.....Duck hunting lunches after Highway 15 reservoir hunts and Bass fishing! Truly a Monroe La. treasure! The Big Duck picture on the back wall brought me back into my childhood and memories of my Mom and Dad sitting in the booth talking to everyone who walked by! Just awesome! And then the waitress surprised us with HUGE swirled soft serve Homemade ice cream cones. I had forgotten about those....I left knowing all was well! read more

I ate ray's pege all through grade and high school, when the fries and gravy & poboys were a monroe treat. After living out of monroe for ten years, and coming home recently boasting of pege's reputation, my husband and I were sorely disappointed. Overcooked, too thin burgers, overdone too crispy fries, VERY dry roast beef and don't even get me started on their version of a fried shrimp poboy. I had exactly four shrimp that tasted of old grease on my sandwich. I was very disappointed. Legend has it, the good cooking I associated with ray's pege of yore, is over at Magic Grill these days. Consistency is the name of the game. Always order the same thing as do most patrons: roast beef po boy. I can't remember any particular sandwich being better than another; they have all been exceptional! If your ever in Monroe/West Monroe, this place is worth a visit.
