I have stopped bringing my vehicles here after witnessing employees treatment of customer's cars. It seems like the younger mechanics think they're cool whipping through the severely pitted, gravel parking lot in other people's property. On more than one occasion I've seen these mechanics speed though the lot, full of potholes, with 0 regard for the wear and damage that could cause to care, especially to smaller vehicles. What an amazing auto center wow!! I took my 2010 Toyota Corolla in, the front desk lady was super nice and accommodating. Very responsive!! I got my car in and had many things serviced such as the brakes realigned, rotors resurfaced, brand new battery, oil change, new brake pads, new serpentine belt, etc for a great price. It only took them less than 24 hours to do all of this I was so impressed when I got my car back it drives SO smooth! Went in for an oil change for the first time and came back with an extra charge for an air filter replacement without my consent. Extra $40 dollars out of my pocket. I also had an engine light on after the oil change and they said that it's like visiting a dr and it just appears. I have my car for over 7 years and never had a check engine light come on. Makes me question the times I had my car fixed there and had to go back to get something else fix because an issue arrises after service was down there. Not going back ever. read more

I took a used car to Ray's for a pre-purchase inspection and I was very favorably impressed! They got me in within a day, and worked around my flaky scheduling without complaint. Steve, the mechanic who did the inspection, was obviously extremely competent, and turned around a very thorough inspection in about an hour and a half. Steve explained everything he found to me in non-mechanic terms and contextualized the results considering the age and mileage of the car. Seldom have I spend $150 so wisely. His evaluation allowed me to negotiate an equatable price from a position of strength. I strongly recommend Ray's Auto Center. read more

When my alternator went out at my work in Lakewood, I'd intended to ahead r it towed across town to the Japanese Auto garage I'd taken it to before--see my review of South Tacoma Way Honda---but especially as if just joined AAA again the night it happened I only had a five mile radius. I had thought I remembered someone saying Rays is good..and the Tow driver was clear that he was convinced they were. And they are. Diagnosed it right--we'd thought it might've been the fuel pump before bringing it in. Rachel at the desk has a consistently delightful voice and is pleasant. We took our 2001 Jeep Cherokee to Ray's after admittingly trying the dealer first for a "no bus" odometer condition. This is a condition where the gauges all go to zero with no fuel, temp, volts, oil pressure, tach or speedo gauges while driving down the road. The dealer charged us almost $1000 to "try" to fix it and it lasted 15 minutes. A call to the dealer was made and they said, "we tried." Next was a nearby auto center who, after seeing the situation decided that they didn't want to even try to work on it. Ray's Auto Center has been used by my employer and I decided to give them a try. I waited for the "we can't do it" phone call, but instead Steve kept working on it. He would fill me in on the progress or attempts tried but never gave up. Forty four days and 2 hours later, I got a phone call that it was fixed. Lots of time and effort went into the repair and I couldn't be more grateful for their tenacity and never give up attitude. And on top of that, they didn't charge and arm and a leg. We will continue to go to Ray's as our first choice. Now on to the front driveshaft issue. See you soon Steve! read more

My truck was broken down and had to be towed in. They fixed the issue and charged me less than I was expecting. Very professional. The only reason I went 4 stars instead of 5 is because it took them two weeks to get around to fixing my truck. Since it was towed in it was lower on the priority list so be aware of that if your repair is time sensitive. Still 5 stars for sure. Gabe and Steve are fantastic. After yet another mechanical debacle with my car, this time a $3k+ Repair. The guys let me keep my car there far longer than they should have while I figured out my car situation. They have great advice on what used cars to look for from a reliability standpoint. When I found a car they were able to do a prepurchase inspection with little notice. They spent a little less than an hour inspecting my new car. Then a few weeks later I stopped by with my new car because a TPMS light came on. Gabe checked and filled the tires, even the spare, and then drove it a few blocks to make sure everything was ok. Josh (the manager) is very accurate in diagnosing my vehicle and took the time to review what the mechanics found while working on it. the shop manager is always rude, and this morning when asking if I could simply wait while my truck was scheduled for a head light change.... pretty simple, and wouldn't be worth finding a ride over, I got told "like i told you yesterday, drop it off. you cant wait with your vehicle"?, just weird being they have a waiting room that I've seen people waiting in before. Even asked if I could bring it back at another time....Bottom line, haji's in Iraq treated me with more respect than that p.o.s. did over nothing. Did me a favor anyways, tried fixing my truck twice previously and failed both times and the mechanic at Blue Panther at the round about at 66th and tyler fixed while i waited for 50$. Great mechanic, always friendly and always willing to stop what he's doing and help. I will never step foot at Rays again. Acts like its the only shop around. Can't believe how rude he just was over nothing. too early for this shit. read more

I had some noise coming from under the hood, as well as the belts being extremely loud squealing sound. I took it into Rays. Steve and Wally did a great job with it, they looked around, looked for leaks, tightened the heat shield on my Catalytic Converter (that was what was making the noise under my hood). They also tightened my belts, and checked for leaks in my coolant system. The best part of it was, they did not even charge me for the labor. How many places that you take your car for them to look at, they do not even charge you? This is the local friendly service that everyone loves to have. read more

Ray's Auto Center cares for people who care for their car. Here's what I mean; I drive a well cared for twenty year old car. Wally, Steve and Gabe can see I take pride in keeping my machines running and looking well past the normal years. Well running old machines are quite revealing of the owner who are usually value oriented. With experience I can plan ahead for repair. Recently I came in for a synthetic oil change and the price turned out to be identical to any of the quick lube changes stores. Plus at my request Gabe pointed out some suspension components that will be needed soon. Because he works on a pit crew and repairs race cars, besides being the son of an excellent mechanic, Gabe knows suspensions. So his guidance is important to me before I choose what components to have him install. He knows to ask intelligent questions about the sensations I feel while driving. Then how to preserve the good feelings of control and remove the bad feeling and noises. A wonderful oil and filter change plus undercarriage inspection and planning suspension tuning shocks and springs for the future. I can be mad about the price of driving and repairs. But I'm thrilled I found Ray's to save me thousands of dollars a year driving the old car I love. Honest Quality Workmanship and surprisingly reasonable prices. Have taken my Corvette (a 30 year old with lots of miles) there several times for repairs. When I dropped it off, had an unusual request - work on this AFTER fixing cars for people who need their cars. First time there, had an intermittent issue, sometimes it wouldn't start. Told them to keep it as long as needed, try to start it every day until it wouldn't start. It finally didn't start, and they fixed it. About a year later, the water pump went out. Had a nice waterfall under the car, they fixed it. I think they are honest, good people. (My 'Vette had a major clutch issue, and I sold it. I think Ray's will be glad to not see that car again.) Replaced the 'Vette with a BMW Z3 (my wife picked it out), I hope these guys can work on BMWs. read more

They called me with a price quote that was accurate to the penny. They were straight forward, honest, courteous, and were flexible with me in making arrangements that allowed me to pick up my pick up after business hours, so I can be ready for the next day and not have to worry about how I'll get to work on a Friday morning. Ray's is amazing! The prices are very reasonable and the work they do is in good time and done well. My family car came here growing up and I have taken my car here since I bought it. They gave me the option to rebuild my transmission or get a used one and didn't charge diagnosis since it was an easy find. Ordered the used one and put it in asap. Then they were able to fix my speedometer sensor and walked me through all the questions I had without making me feel like I was asking silly questions. I recently had a great repair experience. Something major with my air conditioner broke down. To replace it was over $1100. For my 2005 Saturn with 145K miles...I don't want to do that for A/C in Puget Sound region. One of the long time mechanics pitched a creative solution--using a smaller belt to bypass the a/c. I didn't completely understand what was being done...but it was much cheaper to do this, and the repair has held up. I've gone to Ray's 8-10 times. Sometimes it seems like the cost is too high. But when all has been said and done, it's a good place to go. I've always been treated well and honestly. read more

Ray's has been really consistently a good place of business for our cars. They are very easy to work with and the mechanics are easy to reach and talk to. The prices are fair and it never takes too long to get an appointment or have work done. The front office could use a little more cleaning. I sat at the puzzle desk and there is a lot of cobwebs under there and a giant spider by the front door. However, I don't go there for housecleaning, so it's minor. read more

Dropped off my car just to have the transmission fluid level checked (my vehicle doesn't have a dipstick for it). They not only checked the level (found it was full), but ran the error codes for the check engine light that was on, and told me I'd be better off taking it to a Dodge dealership and using my powertrain warranty for repairs. I had not even thought of that, and they could have easily taken advantage of me. Charged me next to nothing, were quick and courteous, and they are close to my house. I'll be back! read more

Had an oil pan and suspension replaced on a 2008 Ford Escape. This involved lifting the engine and addressing maintenance on issues as they presented. All told this this was between 2-3000 dollars. She got it back with the hood put on uneven. I was out of the country at the time and my wife was pregnant working full time. At the time that she had a a second to try and address the issue she was hung up on twice mid conversation. When I came back in person to address the issue (a water leak into the cab was discovered at this time) the woman at the front counter was rude and told me that it was impossible that any of this could have been their fault. This of course would be impossible from such professionals that don't even put a hood back on straight and treat customers rudely. My initial review from 2015 got taken down and it was truthful. The owner of the business never tried to reconcile the issue with me. I only have one other review on an establishment. Yelp or the business didn't at least try and contact me before taking this down. Especially after I spent nearly 3k at this business only to be taken advantage of, poorly treated, left with a lovely mildew smell in my car, and a lopsided hood. Was driving up from Olympia and had an awful scraping noise from my wheel. I stopped in to see if it was safe to drive back home. The mechanic (Ray?) checked it out and told me it was the brake pad scraping, so I may need a new rotor as well. I needed to get it done ASAP, but it was safe to drive 20 miles. This place is a little something else. I recommend you not going here unless YOU KNOW what's wrong with your car or more about cars then I do. My husband is military and I was trying to get our other car up and running before he got back from training. So I got it towed to Rays Auto Body. Before the tow guy even put it on his truck he said the brakes were locked from sitting for so long. Which I understood. So I took it to Rays told them that I would start anymore and that before it would start anymore it would only go between 35-40 miles and hour before it started shaking and that at every stop light we would come to it would feel like it wanted to take off. They said okay, we'll figure it out for you. They called me the next day or so and told me that I need new brakes and stuff(because the back ones locked up) which I understood and that I needed new stark plugs and it should start running just fine. So I said go ahead and do what you need to do to get it done. Few days later I got a call it was done so I went to pick it up and once I got a little ways down the road I realized it would go above the 35-40 just fine but still wanted to take off at stop lights and the service engine light on . I called them right way and took it back. Next day I got a call saying it was the mount in front of the engine that needed to to be replaced and that I just needed a new gas cap and the engine light should come off. I then got a call saying it was all good, the very next day. So I went and picked it up and everything was fine. My car was running like it use to before all the problems. I put gas in it that day and the VERY NEXT DAY THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME BACK ON!!!! I didn't even bother calling them because at this point they just seem to just keep getting me and my husband for our money. I mean they did fix the things to help my car stop doing the things it use to but it just seems like they didn't REALLY know what was wrong. Definitely after I told them to do whatever it took to get it fix. So I now I'm stuck trying to find a place that runs diagnostics on cars(which I knew nothing about) to see what is ACTUALLY wrong with it. I gave them 3 stars because they did get my baby running smooth again but I wanted them to fix EVERYTHING so I wouldn't have to go to another place to find out they missed something else. Just glad my husband is home so we can figure this out. read more

When my wife and moved here from Colorado in 1985 our car was blowing smoke and I was all but sure we needed valves and possibly rings... what a drag. I didn't know where to go in our new home, and someone pointed us to Rays. I left my car with them and prayed... Went to this place after failing an emissions ,because at the emissions place they were not able to get any readings off of my vehicle ,so a certified mechanic had to check it ,so went to rays auto because it was the closest Ase certified place to me,had a really bad experience was told the mechanic Wally the issue he told me the cost 160$ then left did not explain anything all I was told was that I had to wait 45min, after the waiting I was finally told they too were not able to get a reading, but I still had to pay the full amount for the test that could not be done, was told that it needed a thermostat and it would cost me 160$ for them to replace it,so pissed off already I just said alright and left ,the mechanics did not wipe their oil stained hand prints off my vehicle,did say anything just left ,so as I was driving the hood popped opened because they did not shut the hood all the way, called the place back no apology did not care,So this place has really poor customer service and Wally will try and sucker people to paying more than they need too. A thermostat cost 12$ and takes less than 10 min to replace .I would not recommend this place to anybody read more
