I called Rayner Landscaping after having had a really bad experience with a previous gardener. Eric Rayner, and his foreman, Gonzalo, showed up on time for our first appointment. I found Eric to be not only charming but extremely knowledgeable about plants and their various characteristics. After agreeing to Eric's proposal, which I found to be quite reasonable, he was able to get a crew on my property within an hour or two. Eric had promised me to have the work finished within a couple of days and much to my surprise, I came home after about a four hour departure and found that Gonzalo and his crew had totally finished my project, much to my delight and surprise. As only was the work done in an excellent fashion but the crew even removed several yards of dirt from my driveway and totally cleaned up any evidence of their work. I cannot be more pleased and delighted and very heartily recommend Rainer landscaping to anyone interested in having a beautiful, well planned and irrigated garden. Stupendous! My wife & I could not be more pleased. We took a "normal" backyard with grass in the middle and shrubs along the sides and converted this to both of our dream yards - fun, colorful and whimsical, complete with a water feature and fire table for her and a miniature Muir Woods for me with Redwood trees, ferns and benches. Each side transitioned into the other. From initial design, removal of the old yard, to implementation of the plan, the work was handled flawlessly, down to exacting detail (and this comes from an anal guy). Eric, Michael, Gonsalo and the rest of the guys not only did what was agreed to, they went beyond without asking and did little touch up work with unbelievable attention to detail. Eric and his crew were amazing. I recently had two very large and sick trees removed from my front yard and the landscaping there was non-existent. Eric listened to what I wanted and then drove me around to look at yards similar to what I wanted so I could get some ideas. Once I decided to proceed with Rayner Landscaping, Eric drew up a landscaping plan and a crew of six was out the next day. The entire project was complete in three days (would have been two days but we had to wait for a few of the plants that were not in stock). His crew prepared the area, removing all the wood chips from the tree removal, installed irrigation, and brought in soil, plants, rocks and mulch. They also replaced a fence and repaired our walkway to the house. Eric was there for a long time every day, even working with his crew, and he made sure everything was installed just right. They even pruned some of my other trees and cleaned up other areas of my yard without charging me extra. Can't say enough about their professionalism and attention to detail. We have been so pleased with the work that Rayner Landscaping did for us! They are true professionals. We had a very big landscape project and we were feeling very overwhelmed by it. We were re-doing and re-designing our front yard, back hill, and side yards of our home in Novato. Eric Rayner, owner of Rayner Landscaping, reassured us that it would look beautiful in the end, and it definitely does! Eric knows so much about plants and landscape design. At our first meeting, he came to our home armed with a wide variety of gardening and plant books for us to get some ideas of what we liked. He told us to look at the photos and pick out plants that we liked. When I pointed out a photo of a flower or a shrub that we found interesting, Eric talked about the plant like a botanist would. He is so knowledgeable about plants and knows what works best and thrives in this area. In our new design, we wanted to have some grapevines, and Eric designed a small little "vineyard" for our back hill. We told him that we wanted some herbs and a vegetable garden, and Eric made it just perfect! We incorporated a spa area into our side yard and Eric even gave us an excellent referral to a local spa company as well as a beautiful cement and flagstone deck design. Eric's employees are also wonderful. They are courteous, professional, and very willing to make sure that every landscape design and job gets done correctly and neatly. They also consulted with us when they had any questions, and they would also make design suggestions, which we found to be extremely helpful. Avoid Rayner at all costs, or it will cost you! Owner will sell you the stars and deliver poor quality execution. Halfway through projects you'll learn that you actually have to pay more money for things that should have been included. I would say that maybe 14 of my plants and shrubs have had to be replaced because the morons didnt even connect the irrigation system up correctly. Add to that, when I had disputes with the owner over the qulity of the work, he filed a mechanics lein against me (which I later had removed). These guys are AHOLES! Look elsewhere read more

Eric and crew totally redid our front yard last summer (2013). They were very fast and the work quality was A+. When the existing irrigation controls didn't work after the remodel, they came right out and fixed it for free. Six months later Eric showed up with his crew and doubled checked the systems, fertilized the yard and even added five new plants. What a great surprise. Well, once again, Eric Rayner, gets away with my money. I sued him for the botched job he did on my front yard. The judge went over the contract, not the evidence, of the botched, poor, unfinished job Eric and crew done for the thousands of dollars Eric took from us. The trial lasted 15 minutes more or less I was told at the Landscaping material place "Good Luck" suing Eric (BS), he knows a lot of people in high places! I can see it now. I would not recommend Eric at all. Be aware of this know it all man. Eric should not have a Landscape California license. I guess now days, any can get one. Needless to say, we hired a different Landscape Company, they were great, professional, able to follow the plans, fixed all the bad unfinished job that Eric Rayner and his crew done. After reading yelp reviews we called Eric Rayner on a Saturday morning and left a message to call us during the work week. Within hours Eric called back, came to our home and spent two hours reviewing our initial plans. Eric took our plans and came back within in days with recommendations that not only improved our project, but decreased the cost. Eric and his crew started our project on time and finished when promised. As many as five of his crew were there every day. The crew is knowledgeable led by Gonzalvo who is expert at everything landscaping and irrigation. The large area we had landscaped is beautiful: 160 plants and trees. Eric promises a lot but he delivers more. He went the extra mile to trim and prune areas not in the contract, just to make everything look better. I strongly recommend Rayner landscaping for projects large and small. So refreshing to have a contractor fulfill all of his promises in a timely fashion at reasonable cost. read more

Called up for an estimate. Booked a date for the estimate and was called to reschedule only a few hours before the meeting time. After rescheduling, Michael came out on time and spent about an hour reviewing the work. Said he would get me an estimate within two days. One week later I called him up and asked how the estimate was coming along. He said he would email it to me that day. Three weeks later still no estimate. Have no expectations of receiving an estimate. This was a complete waste of time. read more

Took over 4 weeks to get someone to come out and meet with us (several promises to "come out right away" made by Eric Rainer and his team via phone calls and emails in that time frame). Finally shows up and most of the conversation was bragging about his status with the Pacific Sun paper/rag. As others, I don't think much of this propaganda rag except for it's use in the bottom of my bird cage. Some people obviously have lot's of patients for Rainer's tactics and business practices. Do yourself some due diligence and read DEEP into the HIDDEN yelp reviews. We did not, and it would have told us the real story and not wasted our time waiting for this clown. Eric and his team did a fantastic job landscaping my backyard. Eric is very personable and I could tell that he really enjoys his work and takes pride in what he does. He took me around after our first meeting to various of his projects, asked me questions about what appealed to me, what plants I thought I might like and took notes about my likes and dislikes. I then worked with Michael, the landscape designer who works with Eric and he did an outstanding job creating a design that was in line with my vision. He really listened to my concerns, made suggestions and really followed through on everything that we had talked about. Gonzalo and his team of workers did much of the work tearing out the grass, building stairs, creating pathways, and did a wonderful job.
