We're almost finished working with Ian. He's drawn up our final plans for our 2.3 acre Napa lot which was completely neglected and filled with weeds and rocks. He's now helping us decide on which installer to use. We've found Ian to be very easy to work with. A good listener. His original design was right on, great design, and we made very few tweaks. He did not nickel and dime us. He never made us feel uncomfortable asking questions or making revisions. He also understood we are budget conscious and never made us feel uncomfortable with wanting to do certain things on a budget - he totally got it. Great listener. We moved to our new house a few months ago and had a good amount of apprehension submitting our plans to the HOA approval committee - you hear the horror stories often. After interviewing three designers, we chose Ian and I'm happy to report that our plans were approved within 48 hours of sending them to the board. One neighbor, who used to serve on that committee, said "these are the most detailed plans I've ever seen". Ian's attention to detail had to have been a major factor in their decision-making process. What we liked about Ian was: he was able to easily and quickly share examples of other designs he had created; he told us that his fee would include revisions, he wouldn't nickel-and-dime us; and he has established relationships with many/all contractors that we'll need to complete the work. I'll update this review as we go through the process...we're only at the approval stage now. We need to have a good portion of the backyard demo'd before the work can begin. But so far, so good. We had Ian design the plans for our front and back yards. It's quite a big project as we live on an acre that's largely unfinished and/or in disarray. Ian's plan's encapsulated everything that we asked for, along with some wonderful touches that we hadn't thought of. He included a variety of beautiful drought tolerant plants, lovely seating vignettes and perfect pathways. Ian was very responsive, and accommodated all of our changes gladly. My husband and I were very happy with our recent experience with Hall Landscape Design! We worked with Ian and Corey to put together a plan that was just what we were envisioning for our backyard. Ian is enthusiastic and very knowledgeable and was able to take our ideas and incorporate them into a plan we are excited to implement. We enjoyed working with Ian on our backyard project. Ian listened to what we wanted to accomplish with drought tolerant plantings and also added a water feature to our plans/thoughts. Obviously the Covid crisis delayed the project from start to finish, but that wasn't a huge concern given that we weren't going anywhere in a hurry as time has shown. The new design really picked up the appearance of the yard and has made it more inviting to sit outside and enjoy. I was researching landscape designers/architects for a few months before I was fortunate enough to find Ian Hall. After reading the Yelp reviews I spent some time on his website and was truly hooked by his testimonial; it showed me that Ian truly cares about his work and his customers. He spent some time getting to know the canvas (totally non-landscaped, bare and primitive back yard on a 3/4 acre lot) with which he was to work, and he interviewed me to understand what I was looking for. I don't write Yelp reviews very often, but when I have an exceptional experience, I like to share it so that others may benefit. We engaged Ian Hall about 2 months ago to create a master plan for our backyard. Our yard is currently a disaster and very small. We had a laundry list of desires - waterfall, stream, feet-dipping pools, pergola, fire feature, hardscape, built-in benches, and bocce court. We said we wanted a natural "Sierra Nevada" feel for the water features, but also a contemporary/clean/Japanese vibe for the rest of the yard. It would take someone creative and brilliant to pull that hodge-podge together. And, in fact, Ian is brilliant. He nailed the atmosphere we wanted to enjoy in our backyard, while creating a fantastic entertainment flow. His aesthetic instinct is terrific, and even more impressive is his ability to listen very carefully to his clients, grasp their desires, and create precisely what they want. In browsing his website, I had noticed how varied his designs were, which I credited to his being able to reflect client wishes, rather than imposing his own aesthetic. Ian's knowledge of plants is very impressive. His selections for our yard are a huge part of creating the peaceful mood we wanted, and he delivered on our wish for low-maintenance landscaping. Our daughter is an ecologist, and she was impressed that his selections reflected our tastes so perfectly, with so little direction from us. Ian has already iterated our plans several times to accommodate our minor requests and is working with contractor(s) to refine details and address questions. She was able to take mine and my husbands jumble of ideas and wants and put it together in a beautiful and functional design that will grow with our family for years to come. After meeting with other designers who were pushy and didn't listen to us, it was wonderful that Hannah cared about what we wanted and helped us stay within our small budget. One of the best, if not the best, contractor experience I have ever had has been with Ian. Both my front and back yards were in bad shape, with the front barely acceptable and the rear yard never properly improved. When I decided I wanted to launch a major re-landscaping, I quickly realized I had no clue about any of the major decision points. I interviewed a few landscape architects, none impressed me. Then, through a referral, I was given Ian's name. As soon as I met him I knew I could work with him. When he came back with the preliminary plans, I was blown away with the both his ideas and scope. In addition his fee was very reasonable. He simply transformed both my front and back yards from dreary spaces to rich scenes of eye candy. He worked within the existing trees and shrubs I wanted to preserve as well as taking into consideration a planned, future arbor. His design included both hardscape, landscape lights and a water feature. One aspect he focused on that I never considered, was to make sure I had some plants producing color year round. All, of course, are drought tolerant. He came for the planting to help confirm the plant locations and then came back multiple times afterwards and helped me fine tune as we replaced some plants and re-positioned a few others. Recently, it had been a year since the project ended so I asked Ian if he would come by and review the progress of the plants. He is an extremely busy guy yet he came over in short order. I can't recommend him enough- he is extremely knowledgeable about his craft and has a real talent for seeing the potential in a space and then coming up with a great design. Then we found Jim at Hall Design and we knew we had our guy! We just finished up our design project with him and couldn't be more pleased. I found Ian Hall on the internet and took a chance due to the locals (Davis) being busy. Ian listened to our prelim vision for our typical-sized Davis backyard and was able to spec/create a space that we are excited now to construct. He gave us constructive input on things that would make our yard smaller, and emphasized a focal point from the sliding back door. He has an artistic flare and I can't wait to see our low maintenance water recycling urn in place (the focal point!). We had a backyard with a pool and a lot of brick and concrete surround. While it was functional, it looked horrible. Originally, we were going to go with a "design" that a paver contractor had drawn up, but it just didn't seem to capture what we wanted. Ian Hall of Hall Landscape Design came over, took measurements, and created a design that completely transformed our backyard. We now have an organic flow to our yard, with planting areas to soften up the hardscape, fountains, and plants that complement the look and feel.
