The stellar reviews on Yelp prompted me to contact Michelle to make an appointment. Very smart business decision to require appointment only service. By doing this, the customer is given undivided attention and no interruptions by people walking in. I brought in two unique photos I wanted matted and framed. Michelle's artistic and creative approach to finding just the right mat and frame for each photo was impressive. She has an eye for detail. The frame she found for the shipwreck of the SS Monte Carlo off Coronado Beach is phenomenal! And the frame and matting she put together for P-22, LA's Most Famous Mountain Lion is striking. Michelle's attention to detail, visualization and conceptualizing what the end product will be is a hallmark of her style. A top notch professional. Mike Kirkeby Little Italy read more

THIS PLACE IS GLORIOUS. BIG shoutout to Ray Street Custom Framing for such an excellent experience all the way through. From the very first email exchange with Michelle, to visiting the shop and working with her and Dave, to them wrapping up and loading the pieces up for me to take home, the entire experience was first class. I've never been so excited to part with my money, knowing that the results would blow me away. And blow me away they did. The piece in the photo is a thangka painting I brought back from Nepal. It was Michelle's idea to hang it as a diamond, and wow. To see the enormous scale, Michelle offered to take a photo of me next to it. I audibly gasped when I first saw it, and just sat staring blankly for 10 minutes as I took it in. GOOSEBUMPS. There's another one I got framed (I'll add a picture soon) that is done perfectly, as well. Great care was taken to make sure that the mantra - om mani padme hum - and central symbol - om - was not upside down and would be readable even as a diamond. It's non-glare acrylic so that it remains lightweight, protected, and legible. And for the other one, great care was taken to show off the yak brush marks in the margin while keeping it centered in the frame -- no easy feat. I am so happy. May this shop be ever overflowing with orders, forever and ever, amen. read more

Not a full service framer. Only accept pictures or art work that are unframed and unmated.

Did an AMAZING job on this artwork! It had been damaged getting it back from comic-con, and being in cheap frames for too long... Expensive, but well worth it! I was sorry to have to take it off their wall and take it home.... I have other delicate antique artwork that needs archive framing and will definitely bring it here! read more

If I could give more than 5 stars, I would. The Ray Street team's work is exquisite. I have taken 4 very different pieces in, and each one comes out beautifully framed and highly personalized. They can handle big and small, from sentimental keepsakes to fine art. In addition, the owner, Michelle, is absolutely lovely to work with. She will help prep ideas before your visit or let you run the show if you know what you want, and it's so fun to play with different options in her shop! I won't go anywhere else now, and I strongly recommend them to anyone! read more

Michelle and team did an amazing job reframing two family heirlooms. The entire experience was top notch! At our initial consultation it was clear Michelle understood our goals in framing these pieces, and the end result was better than we had even hoped for. What amazing attention to detail - the framing has breathed new life into the artwork. We look forward to returning to Michelle for many years to come for our framing needs. read more

Just wanted to update my review: Michelle has now framed two pieces for me, and both of them are really the nicest things I own! This second piece was a document of my late father and of great personal importance. Michelle really understood that. The very first frame that she suggested could not have been more perfect. I honestly do not think I could have found a more perfect frame anywhere. Between the frame and the matting, the piece is just beautiful and a perfect way to honor my father's memory and his continued presence in my life. I would not have trusted this document to just anyone. Michelle has a wonderful instinct and attention to detail. Yes, it costs a bit more for professional framing, but the quality and end product are so worth it. You will end up with a piece that you will treasure for a lifetime. read more

Best framing store in San Diego! We've been using Michelle for many years, and every time we come to pick up our framed piece, it looks even better than we had imagined. I would never trust our artwork or photos to anyone but Ray Street. read more

I would like to respond to the owner. Why would I even think I need to make an appointment at a store open to the public. You were rude and inflexible. I only asked to come in for five minutes and there was nobody else in the store. No need to keep responding. I'll make sure that all of my friends know not to bother with your place at all. read more

I recently purchased an original piece of art from a talented artist/painter in San Diego, and I wanted to put a frame around it that would bring out the primal colors that I loved most in this particular painting. I work in Kensington, and I therefore decided to take a quick jaunt over to Ray's Custom Framing to see if they could realize my vision for this work of art. Lo and behold, I walked into the store for the very first time and was taken aback with how kind and hospitable the staff were. Moreover, I was really impressed with how passionate Michelle and her employee are about art work, framing, etc. I just picked up my artwork moments ago, and I am really impressed with and appreciative of their great work!! They managed to accentuate the colors of my painting in a way that exceeded my hopes and expectations. This is a homey, warm, and friendly family-like local business that clearly loves their craft, and they're exquisitely talented at what they do. read more

I framed some pictures that I've had sitting in my closet for years. They look amazing! I am glad I waited as long as I did to get them framed because the one on one experience that I had with the owner was priceless. She helped me pick the frames that best matched my artwork. I could not be happier with the staff and experience. read more

Michelle was absolutely amazing in helping me figure out a solution for three prints I had just bought. I think it says a lot about a business when they're just willing to help you in any way they can. I'll definitely be going here for my next custom work. read more

Michelle and Wendy helped me frame an old wedding photo. Wendy has a wonderful artistic vision and is skilled at combing frames and mats to create something awesome! She also was able to spend time playing around with different options in order to find a combo that fit my style and budget. Tip: They ware super busy right now, sooo plan ahead!! My one piece required 3 WEEKS to complete based on their high volume. Luckily this was not an inconvenience for me, but FYI. Wonderful store with a personal, friendly feel. If you need any piece framed, go here! This is as good as it gets. read more

HANDS DOWN, BEST FRAMING SHOP IN SAN DIEGO. HERE IS WHY: Price: I had originally gone to Art of Framing on Adams Ave and was quoted $80 just to have a common stock matting placed in a frame I already owned, and to have a paper backing put on it. When I went to Ray Street Custom Framing Michelle (the owner) quoted me $35/40. That's more like it! Customer service: Michelle is awesome!! She is very personable, friendly, genuinely cares about her customers and what she does, and she is an artist herself. She has also employed someone named Susan who is also AWESOME and a talented artist. That these women are artists matters to me because they have more of an "artistic eye" when it comes to framing pieces that typical frame shop personal wouldn't. When I picked up my piece it looked awesome. It even looked better than I imagined it would. The frame I had brought in was one I bought at a junk shop, and they glass was a bit dirty (I hadn't noticed). Susan cleaned it for me, which was great and I really appreciated it. I will never go to another frame shop again; Michelle's shop is where I will go from now on. In fact, if Christ himself wanted the Shroud of Tourin framed, he would seek out Michelle for sure. Trust me ;) Thanks Ray Street Custom Framing!!! read more

This morning I walked in the door of Ray Street Custom Framing with a weird, tiny drawing in need of a frame. Michelle greeted me like a friend, had an inspired vision for my project immediately and stayed well within my budget as well. Honestly, I wish more businesses were this great at what they do! Michelle clearly has an awesome relationship with local artists & collectors alike & really puts her heart into her work & into building a relationship with her clients. I would recommend this frame shop in a heartbeat. read more

They are SO helpful and have an amazing selection of frame options. You'll definitely find what you need here. They will work with you and, again, they're so helpful, friendly, genuine. You can tell they care how your piece turns out. I'll be coming back for all my framing needs! Yes it's expensive but custom framing always is and they do it in-house using high quality materials. It's actually not any/much more than other places (Michaels, Aaron brothers) but you get to work with local artists! Highly recommend Ray Street! read more

We've had a couple of frames done by Michelle and her staff and they're simply incredible. The final product is as much a piece of art as the painting itself. A well deserved 5 stars! Michelle framed a gift for my husband - a 2 page newspaper article - and it turned out SO nice! I have had some not so stellar experiences at mainstream framers in Mission Valley, so when I decided to have my husband's article framed, I looked on Yelp for some guidance, which led me to Michelle. I felt so welcome from the moment I walked in, and was able to stay well within my budget without sacrificing quality. I have already referred friends to Michelle. Looking forward to working with her again! read more

I had gotten a custom painting made for my partner as a present. I was not in town and I had yelped and found Ray Street and sent my partner to order the frame so it would be ready when I returned. I had asked him to see Michelle (based on Yelp reviews) and she did a wonderful job picking out the frame. I was very pleased that she had picked a golden rim to catch the twinkling night lights in the painting. The canvas was also well stretched. We are happy with the outcome. I had sent the picture to the artist who was very appreciative of Michelle's talent. It is custom framing and so it will take time but so worth it. read more

Really, extremely talented framers and fantastic customer service. It's not cheap to have artwork custom framed, so if you're planning on spending 10 dollars on a frame for your Bob Marley poster, maybe check out Michaels. could not be more happy with this place! from the beginning it was super easy to schedule an appointment and the initial consultation with Michelle was so enjoyable. it felt collaborative the entire way through and your vision is always the priority and somehow executed beyond what you see in your head. the results were so perfect and i can't wait to get more stuff framed here! read more

Edit: It is perfectly all right for friends to review a friends' place of business and craft work. I doubt there is a review on Yelp that does not contain a friend's rating of a friend's business. With that in mind, if you feel the need to judge Michelle's work because her friends (who have all witnessed or bought her craft work) are biased, then do what you must. But if you are a potential customer who likes to review an artist's work before you purchase, you are on the right track with Michelle. I own a piece of her artwork, custom-framed by Michelle. It is lovely and a great addition to my house. I say that because she is not just my friend, but talented and dedicated to great art and great product. -Signed, Liane M Pollard, friend and customer of Ray Street Custom Framing. (8 Nov 08) Can you put a price on thoughtful, artistic and quality products? If you are pinching pennies, tell the owner/artist/operator Michelle and she will work with you as best she can, within reason. Even the most basic framing job will be worth your investment. If you have money to spare, Michelle will do your piece justice - no matter what. She definitely thinks outside the box as a natural habit. Actually, to Michelle there is no box. The benefit to you? A piece of art or a memento that will be complimented - but not overshadowed - by her careful handiwork. read more

I cannot say enough about Michelle and her expert staff at Ray Street Custom Framing. I had 2 signed pieces that were extremely important to me and I was anxious about leaving them with someone for a couple of weeks to be framed. Michelle not only put my mind at ease, but she designed the most INCREDIBLE frame design that truly captured and showcased how great my items actually were. I never imagined how great these items would look framed - Michelle is a true artist. Her and her staff created the perfect texture and color to compliment my art without taking away from the art itself. Ray Street Custom Framing will be used for ALL of my future needs. read more

I worked with Michelle to put together a shadow box for the founder of the Clinic where I work. I consulted a few places but, ultimately, chose Ray Street because of their creativity and budget understanding. We had a project that needed to be done fast and Michelle went above and beyond to make sure we were happy and getting the best bang for our buck. She didn't upsell, was very open about cost, and, despite a busy shop, made me feel like my project was her priority. I highly recommend them and will definitely go to them in the future. read more

I really can't say it was worth the money or the wait. I purchased a $700 frame and couldn't even get the color I wanted. They said they'd call me when the frame was ready in a week and weeks passed and I never heard from them. When I called in to see if my frame had come in, they said it would be available tomorrow. I ended up having go spray paint the frame to the color I needed it to be. read more

I am so glad I chose to use Ray Street CF over other options I was looking into. Michelle is incredibly talented when it comes to matting, and framing art... And helps you find something that works within your budget. We need more businesses to operate like this one does: skilled professionals with great customer service values, and quick turn around time for pick up. Framing is expensive anywhere you go, as an artist I know this as fact. It is so nice to find a place that takes pride in thier work, and it shows. Edit: I recently went back to Ray Street Custom Framing with another piece I wanted to frame for a gift. Unfortunately my budget was very tight. If you want your art framed well, have it framed by an artist. And that is exactly what Michelle is. Outstanding attention to detail. I had 2 beloved pieces framed here and I seriously could not be happier with the work she did. It was a huge deal to go from tacking a poster into an IKEA frame (zero shame there, I still do it with some of my posters) to having these 2 pieces professionally framed. But it was worth every penny. Love it. Love her. So happy I can say I have my very own frame shop. read more
