I looked up the sandwich months ago and it appeared to be a juicy chicken breast between sliced cabbage on thick, fluffy bread. What I got was some beat up, flattened GREEEEEEASY gummy chicken that wasn't the least bit appetizing. It reminded me of frog legs and I was pretty much grossed out after the 2nd bite. The bread was exactly the same as Astesano Bakery Bread and didn't seem "home made" as their menu states. Maybe it is, maybe it isn't (home made) but it sure seemed like the same bread I buy at Safeway. Needless to say I was BEYOND bummed out. I guess that's partially my fault though, I mean... I saw a picture they used to have posted on their menu (it's no longer there) and had expectations that it was going to be exactly the same, which it most certainly was NOT. If I could sum it up in 2 words: Gummy & Greasy. Yuck. The best part was the cabbage so, that's what I ate and ditched the rest of the "sandwich" to the trash. So yeah, $13 + tip for some cabbage. Awesome. With that said, I don't recommend this place for the Sando's but! I may return for the egg rolls. They look good in the pictures however since I got 100% duped this time around, I think I'll ask if anybody I personally know has tried the egg rolls first before I spend any more money here. I do like their outdoor dining and if they could move the ginormous trash bins away from the outside dining tables it would be a great place to dine (who wants to eat next to trash cans??) I'll end on a positive note and say, I did like that they have an option of indoor or outdoor dining, if they move the trash cans, that would be my preferred place to eat.

Today I just tried the Hmong sausage and Thai tea. The lady working was sweet and let me sample the tea to test its sweetness. I think it's spot-on. The sausage is perfectly juicy, spicy and savory. It's rich, flavorful, and reminds me of the holidays.

After the lunch rush, there were several tables that still needed to be cleaned, which made it harder for people to find a place to sit. The outdoor patio was nice, but there wasn't a lot of shaded seating. Overall, we had a really nice visit. The food was fresh, the drinks were great, and the staff was welcoming and helpful. It's easy to see why this place is so popular. we went for lunch, which i am told is not the best time to go for the full experience. the experienced chef's are on the clock for dinner, not sure what they got going on for lunch....looked like college kids. came in around 2:00pm on a saturday and the place was about 60% full, which i found to be a good sign. seated promptly and service was solid. our eatery gear (plates, dishes, cups, etc) were quality...none of this plastic or cheap crap. all of these were good signs for a solid meal. we got the following: - edamame: good. salted just right and a generous serving. - Jasmine Green Tea: they get their teas from Pete's Coffee, so nothing too special here. they brought it out in a nice tea pot, though~ - Philafornia: Not spectacular - Tempura Seafood Roll: Very tasty, but i think it was more in the sauce than in the roll. A good way to finish off the meal. - Rainbow Sashimi: Consisted of Hamachi, Maguro, and Sake. The sake was goooooood~, maguro average, hamachi had a fishyness to it...which i guess makes sense, cuz it's fish and all, but that's not how i like my sashimi. - Mr. Hamachi: didn't even remember ordering it and don't really remember much about it. - Spicy Tuna: good stuff. instead of shredding up the tuna like most places, the tuna is in chunks and the sauce isn't over powering. - Salmon Slam Roll: there are CARROTS....and it was the CARROTS that threw it off for us. you'd take a bit and you'd think, "yup, that's a carrot". too much carrot action for me. spicy tuna and salmon sashimi were the winners, today. the tempura seafood roll was also noteworthy. all in all, i think for chico, this place is ACE....but my Davis friends were sayin there are better rolls at Osaka's (davis) and Mikuni's (Sacramento) and i agree. i should state again that we went for lunch and i think for the full experience, you gotta go for dinner. i've got a friend who swears by this place and knows how to eat and for that reason, the Rawbar is definitely visit-worthy read more

I've eaten at each sushi restaurant here in Chico multiple times and Rawbar has the freshest fish in town by far! I can't get enough of their sushi. The sushi rice is always cooked to perfection- it's soft while not being over-cooked and gummy, and they nail the flavor- mildly sweet, sour and salty- just enough to bring out the flavor in the fish without overpowering it so you can taste the freshness. Every roll here is made to order so during busy times you may experience a wait for sushi but at least you know your roll is fresh and not preassembled and getting soggy like some other places. If it's busy I make sure to order a small ap or miso from the kitchen (which has an amazing menu as well!) and that usually gets to the table promptly. When I'm really in a hurry I just let the server know and they always direct me to what's fastest. The garlic wokked egg noodles are addicting, vegetarian spring rolls are hand rolled in-house, and they have a true miso (not from a powdered base)! The miso is so satisfying -you get a bit of crunch from thinly chopped pieces of napa cabbage, a bit of soft rich buttery-ness from shiitake mushrooms, and the garnish of scallions and touch of citrus oil accentuates all the goodness :) It's the best miso! Happy hour has killer deals! You can fill up fast on high quality food on a budget. Or just get 5-10 $2 oyster hot shots, because they're amazing. $2 for a shucked oyster and flavored shot of sake? YES. Everything on the menu is made in-house. I haven't ordered something that did any less than make my senses do a happy little jig. Try the Korean tacos, the shaka tuna, prawn peanut noodle salad, pork shrimp mango rice paper rolls, I could go on and on....! I've eaten here twice in one day with no shame. read more

Wow, just finished reading a few of the last reviews posted to Rawbar. The theme seems to be cheap. I have been eating sushi for years and there is one thing I have learned.. you get what you pay for. The rawbar has always had (in my experience) extremely high quality standards, and if I am going to eat something raw, it better be the best. Cleanliness is also key and I have eaten at all the sushi restaurants in Chico as well as all over California and lets face it..they are not very clean, especially in Chico. The Rawbar's food production is right out in the open, front and back and I have always been impressed with the cleanliness. I also am surprised to hear someone remark on the size of the sake pours?? I have personally had two or three of their chilled sakes and they were poured in a stemless wine glass almost 3/4 full. As for the hot sake , it is served in the "everybody has one" sake carafe for I think $7. I know I sound defensive but I really love this place and do not want the last few reviews to be considered credible, at least in my and my friends opinions. Try Safeway next time guys..if you want cheap. read more

So, tried it a few times and finally writing a review on 3 visits. chicken rice bowl -- chicken is a "perfect" piece of chicken that does not look natural. Dry, unflavored and blah rice. Put together, it was not an easy thing to eat. Also, same day, ordered a sushi roll. So expensive and the roll size was smaller than 2 pencils put together in girth. I've paid less for rolls with more fish, avocado than here. $50 for the rice bowl and 2 sushi rolls that I sill had to go eat elsewhere to get a feeling of being somewhat full. Also, one blonde waitress would constantly open the sliding glass door to go out, and leave the door open. Excuse maybe: hands full. Okay, understand (just thinking). But coming back in, she walks right in with empty hands and leaves the door open still. It was colder inside the restaurant towards the back than outside with the heaters on. She continued to open the door going out empty handed and leaving the door open which made it very cold inside. I don't recommend this place. High price, small tiny food and blah in flavor with a chilling cold during winter. read more

Rawbar has some of the tastiest sushi in the area and unlike some of the others mention (I don't know what they're on!) the prices are much like every other sushi bar on the planet and the rolls are just amazing and the perfect size! The miso has perfect flavor and the hot sake is really cheap! It tastes great and only costs like $7 or so for 3 or 4 people, depending on how much sake you like to drink, of course! The staff is friendly, who cares if they're asian? The rolls are made correctly and the sashimi is sliced right, too, so what's the big deal? I've gone to plenty of other sushi places in chico that have asian sushi chefs that haven't been so great, in fact, when you walk into a sushi joint and it smells of old fish, you should run away! I've never ONCE had that problem at Rawbar. They're clean, friendly, and have awesome sushi. Try it and I'm sure you'll see that I'm right! read more

Wow, update unbelievable I got no response to my very honest and specific scathing review actually expecting management would care enough to say they're sorry or offer us some thing a Exchange instead several many times I've called I finally got a hold of a supervisor. I did not introduce myself because I'm already feeling a little defensive and guess what he called me by my first name and I have not introduced him and I said I did not tell you my name oh well it comes up in the color ID I said I'm almost 70 how dare you so now I'm adding get one more thing I can't believe the robber wants to train it's supervisors and it's managers as while I was there to be intimidated and less then as an older lady and clearly on the phone so in my mind, Robert , you just double earned all this loss of reputation. We headed up to Chico to stay the night and pick up our new bee colonies the next morning in Orland. It's a 4 hour+ drive one way so breaking it up and hanging out together is always fun! After checking into the Hotel Katerina and hitting the happy hour we Uber'ed over to Rawbar. Wow it was Fantastic! The raw kumamoto oysters were exquisite, the Hokkaido scallops were delicious and everything else was fabulous, especially the rice paper roll. We sat at the bar to eat and Jaime the bartender was an excellent host and never skipped a beat making beautiful cocktails. Service was impeccable. Highly Recommended!! read more

This used to be one of my absolutely favorite places to go... Now I wouldn't even waste my time going back. The food is still good, but I am assuming like with every thing else shrinking with the way the economy has been so has the Rawbar's portions. The crusty roll used to be so big and filling and now its just a shrunken down fried cali roll. Really this place has just lost every thing that made it so great. For people who dont know how it used to be here they would love it but for people like me who know how the food used to be before the shrinking, its a real disappointment to say the least. read more

Best sushi I've ever had! This is one of the first sushi places I've gone to in Chico where you can taste the freshness. Each type of sushi I ordered had its own distinct flavor - not like other places where eel, yellow tail and tuna all taste the same... They could have an orchid or two and maybe a large plant, even add some curtains to soften up the atmosphere and make it feel more cozy, but overall, it was pleasant.
