After two nights in the bunkroom, I switched to the private room (once it became available), which was definitely worth it. The vibe during my staff was kind of "do your own thing", which was perfect. The outside areas were exactly what I needed - a ton of grass, some hammocks, etc. Location is great for Gunnison. We spent the few days walking around town, using computers at the local library, getting snacks at the supermarket, eating breakfast and dinner at local restaurants. Super walkable location. I reached out to the hotel directly before posting a review because, as locals, I wanted to give them an opportunity to address our concerns. The response explained dynamic pricing and that rooms can range from $49-$385, depending on the room and time of year. I completely understand how dynamic pricing works, but that explanation didn't really address why we had just paid nearly $300 while hearing "the best room in the place" offered for $182 during the same check-in period. I was also disappointed that the clogged toilet was characterized as something that was "easy to miss by housekeeping." At this price point, a functioning bathroom feels like a pretty basic expectation. We really wanted to like this place and hoped, as locals, it could be somewhere we would return to or recommend to others. Unfortunately, between the price, the room issue, and the response to our concerns, the overall experience left us feeling like the value simply wasn't there.

My mother (65+) had the best of intentions to book a stay here for our family including my 90 year old grandmother. She booked it a month in advance and was asked to pay ~$300 in advance for a "suite," and room for all of us. As a word of caution, it is never ok for a hotel to ask for all the money up front. A deposit is normal but not the entire amount. After driving for hours we arrived. Upon arrival, the entrance was not clearly marked. Upon searching, there was a gate with a cell number to call to check in. I called this number and a man shows up in beatup truck with a dog in tow. He immediately told us that he had given part of our room reservations away. There was never a phone call to let us know about this change. He also told us that there were two beds in one room without a bathroom on the bottom floor but we could use the shared bathroom upstairs with 3 other rooms. (I believe that this is a hostel situation?) When we expressed concern about my grandmother's mobility, he offered us a bucket to use. When he showed us the room, the stench of urine punched us in the face. I am not sure other guests elected for the "bucket offer." Additionally, the mattresses appeared to be in accordion arrangement with dirty linens. As tension built, one of the people in our party requested restitution for the inconvenience of getting there and our room being double booked. When this was requested, the owner told us that we needed to leave. According to many reviews we have read in retrospect, this is a common pattern from the owner of this hotel. In the midst of this chaos I took my grandmother across the street to get a soda and food. We learned more about this business from the owner of the restaurant. We learned that he has been in conflict with other business owners in this town. Avoid this place at all costs as nothing good can come from doing business with this hotel.

Our room had a queen bed that was so comfortable we slept great. There are multiple bathrooms on the floor some private with shower, private with only a toilet, or shared with toilets and showers. It's also a great location where we could walk to get food in downtown. We recommend Columbine Bar and Grill and Fahrenheit Coffee Roasters.

Having so many of our best friends all staying together in one place made the weekend even more special, and the after party was SO much fun.
