Admittedly, it's been a few months, and I can't find her name, but it was a hyphenated last name...She didn't have a great "bed-side manner", but she told me that I "could wait until next year to get my cataracts taken care of". Well, that was the 1st I have heard that I had cataracts, and I told her there was no way in the world she was going to operate on my eyes. She said that she may not allow me to drive. Now, I can decide if I'm safe to drive or not. I asked her if she was legally required to report it to the DMV and she said no, but sometimes she does - well, first, that's illegal. That is against HIPPA. Second, I am NOT going to let anyone bully me into something I am not comfortable with - especially with SOMEONE I'm not comfortable with. For that, alone, I will never go back to them. Also, though, the visit before that, I think I got the wrong script for my glasses because the glasses I had were not good, and she said my eyes got better - I know for a fact that was not true. First impressions: not good. I was referred here by HHC UC Berlin for an eye problem. I was placed on hold twice and when a representative answered, I was belittled by being asked why I even NEEDED an appointment and what time frame did I expect to be seen. After being placed on hold a third time, I was told that no such appointment was available and to look elsewhere. For a place that apparently exudes customer service, I felt absolutely none. I brought a friend to see Dr. Oropesa for a second opinion on a very rare eye disorder. My friend, who is not fluent in English, was treated with nothing but kindness and respect. The doctor, as well as the entire staff, took their time to explain in detail every single aspect of her care. The doctor even went as far as to call my friend the day after her appointment to give her additional information on her case. I've only been treated with patience and respect by all staff at Ratchford Center. Dr. Chin is a wonderful doctor, he removed my cataracts and he also helped me with an eye issue which is resolving now; my point being that Dr. Chin is very gentle, and has the perfect approach to people, for me. He is clear and thorough. Not crisis oriented, which he could have been considering the issue I'd had. Doctors should all know how to approach people, in order for patients to be receptive to their recommendations. read more

The doctor's office is wonderful, the staff is great and good with children. Unfortunately I have had nothing but issues with eyeglasses: First, my daughter got her first ever pair of glasses. I took pictures of her in the frames she selected, however when the order arrived - it was a completely different pair of frames! She kept the new ones, eager to wear glasses. Then, I ordered glasses. The arm fell off within a week - I took them in to get fixed. One week later - the arm fell off again. I ordered a different set of frames. Within 2 months of the new set of glasses, the coating on the lenses started to come off. It progressed quickly, and was blurry to see. They ordered replacement lenses. THREE sets of glasses - 100% issues with them. I don't know if it is the lab they use ... I will not get glasses there again. read more

Dr. Napoletano was kind, helpful, and thorough during my first exam here as a new patient. I also think their framed selection is fantastic and their protection plan can't be beat. I tried. I shopped around and compared and online I did get a possible better price but no option for breakage coverage. Here I am covered even if I lose my glasses which I've never heard of in a plan. Best of all, if you don't use your plan and get new glasses after 2 years, you can transfer the plan to a new pair of glasses for $1! Yep. You read that right. You don't need new glasses--- yet! Their prices are also better than the mall stores like LensCrafters. Obviously, they are more expensive than an online only retail outlet but I have read you need to be careful with these as the lens quality can be really poor. Very pleased all around with the front desk staff, doctors, & optical shop. Will definitely be back. My husband is coming here next. I also love that if I were to ever have an eye emergency, I have access to an on call doctor- even on the weekends. Speaking of weekends, they offer weekend and evening appointments which makes them even better. They are also easy to get to off of Route 9. I have had several good experiences with the doctors and medical staff at the Eye Center, however the reception staff (which is plentiful) is useless and rude. Constant problems with inaccurate billing. On the last visit I was told I couldn't be seen because I needed a referral which the insurance company confirmed was false information ( I had to call, they couldn't be bothered to do it). Really poor service all around, lazy and rude reception staff, not patient focused. Do yourself a favor and go elsewhere. There are a lot of great eye centers to choose from. read more

The doctors here are all very nice and personable and so are most of the techs that begin the exams it's just too bad that 95% of the office staff are just completely miserable and it seems as though you're being a bother to them. Also it's quite a racket for glasses and contacts and fittings and measurements.....be prepared to pay additional for these services. Ratchford eye center and specifically Dr. Ratchford and her team are amazing! They literally saved my daughters sight and we did not even know that anything was wrong. She had a tear in her retina and no symptoms. It was picked up at a regular exam, they made an appointment with a specialist for her that same day (the Friday of Memorial Day weekend) and Dr. Ratchford accompanied her to the surgeon to make sure that everything was ok and she was not afraid. Not only should you use this office but you should make sure that even if everything is ok you check your eyes every year. read more

I believe this is the first review I've written for a health-related service. I'm extremely pleased with the opthamologic exam I received from Dr. Ratchford. And from an optometrist perspective, Dr. Napoletano is doggedly persistent in making certain that I have the best contact lenses for the best vision correction. This review is in regard to the eyeglasses/optical aspect of the business. When I first bought frames and lenses (about 6 yrs ago), the staff were enthusiastic about helping me choose and selling me frames (with expensive lens options), 2 yrs later I wanted my new rx put into the same frames. Could barely get eye contact with the staff. I felt like I was a bother to them. Yesterday I went there to fix a problem with the lens/frame/and a brown screw. You know the type of screw. If you wear glasses, you know that tiny screws of various types of tiny-ness are standard material. The woman who greeted me first asked me if I bought them there. OK. Already that's a fail compared to lenscrafters. I say yes and then she must look me up. Then she looks at the frame info to let me know how old it is and that "coverage" has expired. I say that I know that. I just want a little screw to fix it. Then she says that they don't carry that frame and she didn't think that they have the right size screw. But she will check. Then she goes into how the frame might break, yadda yadda. I say, I'm hoping you have the little screw, and you can just hand it to me and I WILL PUT IT IN MYSELF. no no no she says and goes off to do something with it. Comes back with an imperfect fix and she clarifies that she had to cut off a screw that was too long. And the "fit" of said modified screw isn't perfect. I might have been ok and ecstatic with the imperfect fit if this woman hadn't exerted so much effort to discourage me from a solution and seemed ignorant about basic frame components. I have walked into lenscrafters in the past with an eyeglasses malfunction and they have embraced the opportunity to fix the problem and rescue me. Me, a potential customer as important as an existing one. The three stars are for the very good experience with the doctor who does my eye exam. read more

They are the best! Dr. Napolitano has been working with me on my ridiculous Keretoconus eyes and really got me dialed in. Ashley at the front desk is always smiling and is completely undaunted by a 30 minute search and rescue of your insurance information. They even bird dogged a clinical trial for folks with my eye condition at another eye center because they knew it would help me. You couldn't ask for better service, deeper knowledge, or a higher level of professionalism. read more

I had two cataract surgeries with Dr. Ratchford within a one month period. I am soooo pleased that I chose her to work on my eyes. She is absolutely amazing and now my vision in both eyes is 20/20. I no longer need my thick glasses that I wore for 40 plus years. I was so anxious to have my eyes worked on, but Dr. Ratchford and her staff (Special thanks to John and Emily) put me at ease. I knew I was in good hands. If you need any kind of eye surgery or eye care, you should really consider Dr. Ratchford, you won't find better!! Her front desk staff was also wonderful. The doctor and staff seemed competent but the glasses purchasing was frustrating. They argued with the Doctor about a certain type of glasses that he'd suggested and the staff said were not available. Then when I finally ordered my two pairs of glasses I had to return five times to get them right! Then one pair broke. When I went for a replacement part I was told (with no empathy) that my model was no longer available. I'm looking for another place, but willing to give them another try if I cannot find something better. At least I know what to watch for here. read more

I was a patient of Dr Ratchfords when the office was in New Britain and she is great. I ended up following her to the new office here on Farmington Ave. Nice new big building. She is always a pleasure to deal with. My recent visit was about 2 weeks ago and I guess she is working with different patients so I was referred to another doctor in the office that works with her, Dr Brett Kjellen. He is great also. This office has many problems. The receptionists are rude. The woman that does the billing screws it up EVERY time I go,(codes things incorrectly to up the bill) and bills me for annual exams (which are covered by my insurance policy). Every year I have to call and argue and tell them to resubmit, and she is never in the office....I have to keep calling back. The ONLY reason I stay with them is because Dr. Chin is an excellent Doctor, and his assistants are good as well. read more

This office was recommended to me by an assistant inI a medical office, as I liked her glasses. I was pleased with the professionalism and the state of the art technology. I was very overdue for an an exam and a prescription update. My previous doctors were old men with old school offices and technology. And the staff at one office was rude. Ms. Napoletano was professional and pleasant! I noticed how all the staff encouraged me along the way, never did I feel stupid or like I was an odd ball! You know that awkward feeling of "am I getting these answers correct?" I was referred to another Dr in the office. Dr Chen was also very thorough and pleasant. When I needed a referral to retina specialists, the staff ha dueled the appointment for me. The two people who worked with me for new glasses were incredible. No pressure. I worked with one the first day and another the second day. There was no worry about who got the sales commission! (The two sales staff have been working together for nearly 20 years) Upon picking up my glasses; again they were so helpful. I was also pleasantly surprised that my order came in several days early!! I went to this office for a eye exam as a new patient . With my current insurance I am not required to pay CO-PAYS on routine eye exams. After a month I started receiving bills for a co pay amount .I attempted to contact the office to resolve the problem. When i said i don't pay vo-pays on "MAINTENECE thier response was "WHAT IS MAINTENCE", Jus a small example of the attitude I had to deal with . Then I was told "call your insurance company" . Upon calling the insurance company. I was told that the doctors office submitted the bill incorrectly. Which doesn't surprise me. So I called back directly after the insurance company called and asked CARA "can you explain what's goin on " mind you this is directly after the insurance called Cara's response "what are you talking about and why are you talking to me this way" . HOW BOUT BECAUSE 1. YOU office made me call my insurance company which made me wait a EXTREMELY long time to tell me that they should have never had me call them .. Two you INCORRECTLY SUBMITTED A BILL and now are looking for me to pay for your ERROR and LASTLY YOUR ATTEMPT TO BE A SMART ASS ON THE PHONE WITH SOMEONE ALREADY AGGITATED WITH YOUE OFFICE ...So NEEDLESS TO SAY I'm not goin back . I've bee not to several other eye exams and never had any issue's as far as billing is concerned.my experience with doctors offices is a lot of UNNECESSARY BILLING issues are caused by INCORRECTLY billing the insurance company. Some of the staff is nice enough, but the front staff are mostly nasty and rude. The one girl I liked doesn't work there anymore and I've heard them bad mouth her for no reason. They need to be aware of what they say, we can hear every word in the lobby. I've also heard Dr Ratchford yelling at staff. If there is a problem, she should be talking to them behind closed doors. It is very unprofessional. Emily, Becky and Dr Kjellen are all very nice. The managers should really look at who they have at the front. read more
