I called Heartfelt to see if they had any paper heart cut outs or die cuts, and the woman I spoke with say I could purchase paper and cut out the hearts with their die cuts machine myself! When I got there and she realized how many I needed, she offered to have her team cut them out for me see i needed 100. She was already doing it for another customer and did it for me too! They were ready within an hour. The store itself is super cute. Lots of arts and crafts and scrapbooking supplies, and a bunch of tables to the right when you walk in. I'm new to the game, so my impressions are pretty uninformed. You've been warned. Every bit of me strained to remember where this was. And by remember, I mean figure out. I just couldn't place it; this entire development on the east side of Redwood is like a black hole, though. I think there may have, at one point, been an Indian restaurant in here but even that is shaky. And even though I've driven by here a hundred times I would never have been able to tell you that there's and AMC Theater at the back. It's sneaky. So when the Yelp app pointed me here when in search of some thread, I just had to believe. And when it told me that they are open until 9pm on a Monday night, I also had to believe as it was almost 7pm and I thought for sure that's when they would be closing. I found it, parked, and on my way in was warned that "you better hurry, they close at 7pm!" Once inside I asked an employee who corrected me and said that yes, just as listed on Yelp, they are open until 9pm. Inside it's a fabric store, straight up. Whereas some of the bigger box stores have more crafts and branch out into pillows and decor, this is fabric. Cottons, fleece, blends, quilting, fat quarters, fabric, fabric, fabric. On the one hand, if you're looking just for fabric then you might appreciate the no frills approach. On the other, if you are looking for a broad range of supplies, know that the selection will be limited. The thread I was seeking was pretty minimal. Oh, you're better off here than a big box department store, but if you want a wide selection of thread materials and more color choices, as well as more quality choices, you'll need to find a bigger store with more options. I was looking at a simple mending project, so I found what I needed and got out of there pretty quickly. I'm not sure if they play the coupon game like other crafty spots. That seems to be the norm, but I didn't stick around long enough or have fabric needs that would have clued me in. But I do know that when I start sewing more again in the fall, I have a new stop where I can go to look at prints and patterns that will work for what I'm after.

Based on all the colorful quilt kits I tend to see them assembling, I'd assume Sewtopia caters to an even larger online presence. While the shop has a small footprint, they're neatly organized, all arranged by color, and packed to the gills with all kinds of rad modern fabrics in all the latest designs, in every color way. The shop exudes coolness. Oh! And along the top shelves, there are hundreds of bolts of cotton solids. They carry every Kona solid color! If you know fabric, you understand how impressive that is. The employees are all very knowledgeable about the various fabric lines and the artists that design them. They're all so friendly and helpful every time I come in. I've heard them call some of the customers by their first names, which I think is cool. Just shows how personable they are! The first time I went in and bought a bunch of fabric, I quickly realized how competitively priced Sewtopia is. I paid {and continue to pay} roughly $1-1.50 less per yard than any of the other local quilting/fabric shops. Their fat quarters cost ~50¢ less than other shops, too. These guys are smart. I can tell that they really understand fabric trends and what's going to sell well -- as a result, they're constantly rotating in new stock, but also maintaining a good supply of popular fabrics that have been sold out elsewhere. The classes are taught by Denise, who's pretty much a sewing celebrity in my eyes. :) This year's BOM choices are batik and Christmas themed. Denise is so patient in her teaching the entire roomful of quilters, ranging from beginner to advanced. She explains things well and I appreciate that she demonstrates the block assembly steps with a closeup camera on the projector screen. When I go in, most of the ladies and Logan are kind and personable. Sure, sometimes they're busy, and can't really talk, but they're helpful when they have the opportunity to engage. On a personal note, I think some of these negative reviews are unfair and kinda prejudiced.. Perhaps their own sour attitudes have been projected onto these ladies that spend their work days cutting lots of fabric and answering calls. They're not catty or mean, as portrayed in certain reviews. No offense, but it's not their fault that you don't know how to thread your inherited sewing machine. Look on YouTube or consult your manual. It's not their fault if you don't monitor your own machine's warranty. Read your paperwork. It shouldn't hurt your feelings if an employee tells you Nuttall's doesn't sell yarn.

But the bigness of the company almost works against them. One of the reasons I often choose local companies is because of the kind of service and attention I get. When you order with them, there's a real push to do it online. That's great if you know what you need and what you're doing, but for someone who doesn't have this stuff made every couple of months it could be difficult and you may find the service at a smaller shop to be more up your alley. In a world where online printing companies are now super, super, UBER cheap it's often going to be more affordable to just send it off to Texas or California, even with shipping. I mean, if I'm submitting it all online anyway it becomes a pure price game. The good news is that they are local and real people do work there, so you can work a little closer with them if you need to. They've been around a long time and can handle just about any size project. And it's not just banners--they do tablecloths, car wraps, stand up banners, window banners (decals? wraps?) and a whole host of other promotional or products. Give the website a whirl if you're curious, but realize that if you're going to get a banner or project done just online, you can do a little research and save some money. Hopefully they'll be willing to walk you through it if you go in or pick up the phone.

After manning a table at a couple of events I was hooked and sought to improve the professionalism of our presence. The first thing I needed was signage with a stand. A Google search led me to Sugar House which had the largest selection of banner fabrics and stands, I designed what at that time was an awesome piece, they did a beautiful job of printing it, it arrived in plenty of time for my next event, and the durable banner and stand continue to serve me well. Their after-sale service was incredible - I received several emails asking if everything was to my satisfaction and requesting a photo of my banner in action. This photo is still on their website! They're not the cheapest, but you can't beat their quality, selection and service. I would definitely use them again and highly recommend them for full-service banner work.
