Warm Black Rice Pudding-ultimate comfort food
    Sonia K.

This is a composite review for several visits over 15 years. I'm glad to report that it's still a beautiful and comfortable dining experience with fresh and delicious interpretations that make me a repeat customer. Seating and ordering food ends by 2:30 for lunch before reopening for dinner. Even with a late lunch Yousef was an attentive and helpful presence. The masala chai was more black tea forward. Palak chaat is always a tasty treat; I still remember the first time tasting it here over fifteen years ago. All the tastes and textures still create a dopamine rush. The okra was more astringent than I recalled. The roasted style reduced the mucilage, which many people prefer. The crusted two tandoori lamb chops were a generous size so made it more filling. The lemon cashew rice was tasty also. Feel like a little kid to report that my dessert was probably my favorite part. The warm black rice pudding was delicious comfort food and something I will remember for a while. Unctuous and crunchy with stewed raisins and cashews, I will add this as something to order each time.

The best Indian in the US in my opinion, and they've been consistently good since they opened over 20 years ago. That was probably the last time I visited the restaurant before this trip, and the first thing I did was order the spinach dish, Palak Chat, which had changed but actually improved. This dish is outstanding and a must for every visit. Everything was prepared perfectly, the chicken so tender, mushrooms flavorful, lentils perfect flavor and consistency. Our server was extremely attentive and polite. Ask for the front booth if you have a large enough party. It's the best seat in the house.

Cauliflower Bezule was great as an app to munch on. The Sweet Potato Samosa was like Thanksgiving in a samosa, and it was a unique pairing we didn't expect to enjoy as much as we did. Definitely try it if you can. Got the Gosht Ahuna which was well made, and the lamb pieces were very tender. Chicken Makhani was average, good but not exactly a memorable dish in my opinion. Truffle Naan was a bit of a miss and didn't really pair that well with our entrees, but the Garlic Naan was pretty good. We got the Kashmiri Sour and Ginger-Pom Pisco Sour for drinks, and they were both well made and paired really well with our meal. The Kashmiri Sour was definitely our favorite drink of the night between the two. Overall, service was great and the staff was attentive. It was also pretty easy to get a reservation.

I'm going to be honest, Indian food isn't my first go-to but Rasika changed my mind about it. I was hooked with the appetizers, especially the Cauliflower Bazule! The Sweet Potato Samosas were also surprisingly delicious. The Chicken Tikka Masala was savory and had the perfect balance of spice. Don't forget to order Garlic Naan because IT IS GOOD! The ambiance is great for a date night and service was amazing. Would I come back here? Absolutely!

Regardless of type of cuisine, this Indian restaurant seemed to be the most recommended place we've gotten! We went during lunch time and every waiter and staff there was friendly and nice to us. They also have a pretty extensive menu to choose from!

Went here with a friend for dinner. The lighting is very, very dim with candles on the tables. Still, it is quite difficult to even read the menu. The service was very prompt, and waiter was kind and answered all of our questions. I was excited for my dish, but I promptly noticed that it contained a very high amount of cilantro. It wasn't listed on the menu, and I didn't think to ask the waiter. Four stars for good service, the food I did eat was great, and also for having allergy and dietary information on the menu (for gluten free, vegan, etc.).

The best meal during my most recent trip to DC!! A friend raved about how amazing the Palak Chaat was at this restaurant. She said I had to try it the next time I was in DC! I love recommendations so I had to come check this spot out. We were able to make a reservation a day in advance for 5pm on a Friday. We arrived a few minutes prior to 5pm so did have to wait to be seated. They were nice enough to allow us to wait inside. We were quickly seated , and our wait staff approached our table shortly after being seated. To our luck- we dined here during restaurant week. This meant that for $55 we were able to enjoy an appetizer, entree and dessert. My friend and I decided to order different items so that we could try more items. We ordered the following: Appetizers 1.-Palak Chaat -Crispy baby spinach / sweet yogurt / tamarind / date chutney 2. Andhra Tawa Shrimps-Shrimps / Guntoor chili /peppercorn Entree 1. Black Cod-Fresh Dill / red wine vinegar / star Anise / dill Potato 2. Chicken Tikka Masala-Onion / tomatoes / dry fenugreek Dessert 1. Gulab Jamun with Ice Cream 2. Chocolate Mint Pudding The food came out quick and I was impressed. The star of the show was for sure the Palak Chaat! I can't compare the taste to anything else- but if you are considering ordering it- I highly recommend that you do. I was not a fan of the shrimp- too spicy for me. The black cod was ok-i have had better. The chicken masala was well done! I appreciatey the taste of the masala- it was not over powering. The chocolate mint pudding dessert was good! It was comparable to a bread pudding. The ice cream that accompanied the gulab was amazing! Our server highly recommended that we don't skip the ice cream! I have to admit I am glad we took his advice! Overall the food was memorable , the service was comparable to Michelin Star rated restaurants. Our serve constantly made sure our water glasses were full, cleared our plates promptly, and wiped off any crumbs on the table-- highly impressive service! I would say that Rasika is worth patronizing! I know that this spot will be on my list to visit for my next trip to DC!

My friends and I booked a reservation here for dinner. We were greeted at the door and sat at our table by a kind server who made our entire experience wonderful. He carefully explained how I would be able to get a vegan version of the multiple course meal, and each dish was delicious! Our table by the window felt like a private room within the restaurant so the vibe was perfect.

Had been meaning to return to Rasika for some time now, but were never in the area when it was convenient to do so. We had a show at Wooly Mammoth last night, so that was the perfect excuse for a pre-show dinner. We had a reservation and were seated right away. James was our server and he took good care of us. We had the goat cheese kolcha, the palak chaat, mixed grill, purple potato dosa and black cod. It was all very good. The black cod and palak chaat were our favorites.. In fact, the food was so good that, even with the mediocre cocktails, we still gave our visit 5 stars. Also, thank you Rasika for circling the 20% service charge on the check, as to not trick patrons into waaaay over tipping. We still added a tip, but it's nice to see Rasika being up front about it

Loved the place with amazing vibes and great food with amazing presentation . Service was quick ... server well understood the requirement and suggested the food options . Worth the visit

    Neluta G.

Great ambiance fantastic bar tenders they could make any type of cocktail or mocktail you want. Appetizers OK, I don't like cold food and some of the appetizers were cold. I had the lamb chops which were fantastic, nice presentation and cooked beautifully. I don't try anything else but it seems like the entire team loved their food, based on the empty plates. Dessert good. Beautiful decorated restaurant it was packed on a Wednesday night so a reservation is a must. Why 4 stars because of the naan it was OK. I love the layered wheat naan, they did not have it and the rest of the naan we had was thick not thin. Definitely a must if you are in the area and please make reservations unless you are alone and want to dine at the bar.

Perhaps my favorite aspect of this spot is the ambiance- it is fancy but not pretentious, with romantic lighting and a cozy feel. It's a great place for a family night out or a date night. They also have a variety of meat and vegetarian options as well as some vegan ones. Most of the cuisine is traditional North Indian fare but they also have some unique options, like a Gujarati Undhiyu (vegetables in a tangy, creamy sauce). Our favorite items were actually the appetizers (esp the green garbanzo tikkis), which are twists on traditional Indian food and beautifully presented. We come here once every couple years and will definitely be back!

Lovely setting, attentive service, quality food. Hub and I indulged ourselves big time; ordered multiple dishes. Most of them are very tasty. There's a lot of hybrid approaches here, hence the "Flavors of India" in the sub-name of the restaurant. I'm open to a "new take" on an old favorite--provided it doesn't lose the essence of the original. Rasika has also put together some unique, modernist creations and throws them out there for consideration. I believe that what Rasika offers comes from a place of confidence, love of food, and culinary artistry. For the most part, it succeeds. From the Tawa-Griddle: The crab pepper masala appetizer is out of this world, explosive and flavorful. From the Sigri-Barbecue: The truffle seekh kebab is delicate, earthy, and deftly prepared, not over-done which is so easy to do. From the Entrees: The tandoori lamb chops are below par. The marinade of mace, cashew nut and cardamom proves to be too much; it prevents a good char from forming and the meat is somewhat mushy. From the Vegetarian Entrees: The cabbage kadhi is creamy, slightly crunchy and elevates this plain vegetable to another level. The eggplant kozhambu is slyly spicy and sneaks up on you. I'd certainly return.

Are the helpings decent sized and worth the prices? Or they small like at a lot of "fine dining" Indian places?

It's between small and medium size. Taste is worth the price but not the quantity.

Is this restaurant kid friendly (9 yr old) in terms of pacing and ambience or is it really just for adults? Is 1.5 hrs enough time for dinner here or longer?

During Covid, Rasika implemented a no kids (I believe under 8 or 9yo) policy. Not sure if that policy still exists but it's obvious they don't really care to have kids there. You can bring your kid (since he/she is of age) but by no means would I… Read more

Can they make dishes that aren't spicy? I have allergy to spicy pepper (chili, jalapena, black, white pepper)

Yeah most dishes are not spicy

Are there many gluten free options? Are many of the protein dishes gluten free?

Don't see any GF options mentioned specifically in the menu.

Do they have Valet parking service?

They have valet parking but only in the evenings, and it is awkward to stop in the street given the location. There are, however, several parking garages in the vicinity so you can do whatever is most convenient for you.

    Is this place halal?

    I do not believe so

What's the dress code here for dinner? Will I be able to get away with jeans and a nice top?

Yes, you'll find a mix of people in terms of dress code. Some dressed in suits and some in jeans.

    Do they have free parking?

No have to find street parking around there and that can be a nightmare depending on the day and time.

Jumping into my experience. I didn't make reservations and the hostess was so kind to accommodate me and inform me of other great opportunities to visit, one being their Pani Puri experience. Needless to say, I'll be back! I sat at the bar and received A+ service from Amanda who was supported by Renee. Amanda's personality is what you'd appreciate in a bartender, she knew the menu top to bottom and was excellent with recommending dishes and cocktails. Drinks: Kaapi Martini- a rich flavored Chai espresso martini. This drink, while delicious, was more on the creamy side and needed a half ounce more of liquor to take it from latte to cocktail. Other than that, the rich Chai taste was certainly divine but I like to have a break from sweetness or milky drinks when enjoying cocktails. Malabar- the STAR! This smokey drink was made with elite status in mind. It's the type of drink with a perfect credit score and a few properties in the Maldives-gosh this was amazing! The tequila stirred with Campari, fresh lemon, rose, and mezcal were paired together so beautifully, each supporting the other without canceling out in taste. It was the perfect balance and the smokiness added a mysterious flavor to the mix. I absolutely loved it! Golden Hour- another divine drink. Its bright color brought a festive vibe to the atmosphere and the vodka shaken with herbal liqueur, Indian turmeric, sweet pineapple, and fresh lime balanced well. It wasn't too sweet but it carried the right flavors with the turmeric and pineapple setting the tone with a citrus/warming feel. Food The Chaat and Street Food section: SPDP-toasted puffed up puris stuffed with potato, red onion and cilantro and topped with sweet yogurt, tamarind, and green chutneys. The final component was sev added on top, which is crunchy chickpea noodles. This dish, while messy to eat, is exactly what you want to order. IT WAS AMAZING! Let's explore the flavor profiles on this dish....first, the balance of sweet and spicy was insane! Imagine taking a bite and your mouth is hit with some sweet heat, that's what the sweet yogurt and tamarind offered all while the green chutney cooled down your mouth. It was ridiculously flavorful and divine! The Pav section: KFC sandwich aka Kashmiri Fried Chicken sandwich- the BEST chicken sandwich in town! As someone who adores a good chicken sandwich, there is a lot to be said about one whose flavor profile sweeps you off your feet with just one bite. The chicken breast was the juiciest and most perfectly seasoned!!!!! Brined to perfection, this chicken breast was amazingly juicy. Placed on a sweet toasted buttery bun and topped with Maggi-mayo and sweet pickles, I was stopped in my tracks by how delicious this was-my goodness! Sweets Gulab Jamun- This is the way to conclude a beautiful culinary experience. The Gulab Jamun was impeccable in taste and I tried a scoop of their ice cream on the side, sending my sweet tooth on the wild side. Both were perfect. Would I return? YES! You probably can't keep me away from this place!!!!! Do I recommend? ABSOLUTELY! Please support businesses that take the time to make their customers feel good all while painting a beautiful story through their dishes.

The Chai espresso martini was GOLDEN! If this drink were to go up for cocktail of the year, it would come out on top. My boyfriend raved about his Pili margarita and talked about how excellent it was to taste fresh mangoes, a burst of citrus, and spiciness. A beautiful culinary combination Safe to say that both drinks were our favs!!! I also had a glass of their white wine and it was dry and refreshing. Well done! Food: we ordered several dishes from the happy hour menu. Please note that they aren't shy of providing excellent portions. Manchurian wings: a star dish! The fry on the wings were perfect but the seasoning puts this dish over the top. Highly recommended! Vegetable samosa: flaky dough with the most delectable sautéed vegetables. You'd definitely want to try a few of these! Gobi manchurian: a beautiful dish for non-meat eaters and meat eaters. Similarly to the wings, these cauliflowers were perfectly fried and seasoned to perfection. Actually, at one point, I thought that I was eating a meat dish because it was so tender and juicy inside. Please don't miss ordering these! Spicy chicken tikka: the dish that makes you ask "what spices are in this? They're EXCELLENT!" Such a juicy and tender cut with the perfect blend of flavors. Order, order, order! I think it's safe to say that we enjoyed ALL of our selections and appreciated the modern twist on Indian food classics. They didn't stray too far from the beauty of these dishes but added just enough personality to win you over. Lastly, we ordered dessert! We originally went with their bread pudding which came with cardamom ice cream but the amazing host, Dave, surprised us with their special Gulab jamun. The cardamom ice cream was AHHH-MAY-ZIN (spelled how I need you to say it!) it was amazing! But let's get into this bread pudding. I have so many questions: who is the pastry chef? How did they master such perfect bread pudding? Also, why is this dessert SO GOOD?! Best bread pudding and ice cream EVER! And I don't say that often about much bread puddings. The Gulab jamun was also my favorite because it wasn't sweet as the others and I felt so satisfied taking bites of this with the beautiful ice cream they placed on top. It's a no brainer that I'm coming back soon and that I'm going to try their dinner menu next. Please make the reservations and go support this spot, you won't regret it!

Jab's version ($10) is the best dupe I've ever had! I ordered it as a carryout item, and I was wary that it wouldn't hold up to the transport and would be soggy. Jab packaged it thoughtfully - all of the sauces were served on the side - and the flash-fried spinach stayed perfectly crispy and wasn't greasy at all! Serving the sauces on the side is actually even better because then I was able to customize the sauce levels and flavors. I would definitely come back and order this again. I also ordered the Chicken Makhani ($20) because I'm basic like that. It comes with rice. You can customize the spice levels, and yes, I ordered mild (...I SAID I was basic). The butter chicken was good but doesn't crack the list of my favorites. The chicken was a little dry and they use a grilled/barbecued chicken which gave it a smoky flavor. The mild was quite mild, I actually think I could handle a slightly spicier level here. I'm happy I tried this place - will come back to try more.

Ordering from the kiosk was easy and the staff was very helpful with answering questions and making suggestions too. I got the BahuBali burger and it was HUGE! This dish is bursting with flavor! My friend ordered a chicken wrap and he said it was really good but, could not finish it. I made sure to order some butter chicken to take home for my wife to enjoy! However, that's a front for what I think is some of the best south Asian food I've ordered in DC. Check out the dosas here! They gave us sauces, but it was totally unnecessary, the food is so good by itself. I don't think I've ordered the other stuff here. Altogether, I had an amazing meal for under $15, which almost never happens. They also have a heated patio that's really cute, making it a great option even on cooler nights. Service was a little slow with fewer check-ins than we would have liked, but the space is cozy and the overall vibe feels more laid back. For my detailed review below, typically above a 4.5 is in the two or three Michelin star category and 4.2-4.4 is a Michelin 1 star. For all my other adventures visit: https://www.instagram.com/food_for_chu?igsh=Zjk3ZDlrNTAxY2J0&utm_source=qr D.C. Michelin #1: For our first stop in our nation's capital, I am reviewing the Indian restaurant, Rania. This is actually my second time at the restaurant, however I only experienced the 3 course option that time and opted for the full tasting experience this time. Ambiance: 4.2/5.0 The restaurant is simple, yet elegant. The noise level is moderate and you don't have to worry about listening to someone else's conversation all night. I have yet to travel to India, but I imagine a fine-dining establishment there to look something like this with the goblets, arches, and see through walls! Service: 4.4/5.0 In my first trip to Rania, I actually had to bring my golf clubs which the host stored for me and even carried it out when I was leaving (it is extremely heavy). In my second trip, the service was again top notch. The waiter was attentive and enthusiastic making me excited for the full tasting experience. The pace of the meal was also perfect. Food: 4.3 Amuse: Two incredible small bites starting with a Sabudana Vada, a warm and spicy fritter that was soooo good. Next, a Chana masala that had that same incredible warmth but a tomato kick instead. First: The first dish of the tasting was a yellowfin tuna tartar and Pani Puri. The crunch of the pani puri complements the tuna so well and the yuzu vinaigrette was not overpowering. I will say, that there wasn't a wow factor for this dish however, but still tasted good. Second: Next up was a scallop dish with an Amritsari (cooking style that blends spices for a burst of flavor) sauce. The scallop was cooked perfectly and sauce is no joke. At first the flavor is subtle as you really taste the scallop, but then the kick comes in and it is delicious! Third: The next course was a Nargisi Kofta quail egg, Swiss chard, truffle cream, and pickled mushrooms. Think of a scotch egg with chicken as the outer covering. This dish was surprisingly spicy (you see a theme here), but the creamy sauce complimented the crispy chicken so well. If it's too spicy, make sure to eat the chard to give yourself a break. This was fantastic, but be warned, it's deceptively spicy! Fourth: I then had a Shrimp momo which is a shrimp dumpling. The dumpling sits in a moilee sauce which is coconut based. First off, I will admit that shrimp dumplings are not my favorite, but it was perfectly cooked in this dish. The sauce has a great savory and nutty flavor. However, there was a bit of an aftertaste that I couldn't wrap my head around. Fifth: For my fifth dish I got to eat a Lamb Seekh kabob. The lamb is incredibly tender and the Kashumber (cucumber in yogurt) is a perfect compliment. I will say that the flavors weren't as strong, perhaps because the previous dishes were so powerful. Sixth: The last savory dish was my selection of the duck vindaloo (chose over the squab tandoori). Vindaloo is a spicy curry and think of the duck like a duck confit. The skin is so crispy and the meat is extremely tender. The duck also comes with naan, rice, and lentils. This feels like a traditional Indian meal but elevated to the max. So much flavor, perfect cook, and the best accompaniments, my favorite part of the meal. Dessert: To wrap everything up, dessert was a chocolate tart with masala chai ice cream. The chai flavor balanced out the dark chocolate fudge to perfection. As someone who doesn't really like chocolate, the chai itself made me want more. Overall: 4.3/5.0 Just like my first trip, the food was great, ambiance serene, and service superb. There were a couple of dishes that didn't wow but overall I can't complain at all. As someone who loves Indian food, this experience elevates while keeping true to its roots. Rania is absolutely deserving of its star, and I can't wait to return!

The low light really brings a intimate and exclusive mood to your experience here. Service: Before being sat, being greeted and being sat was slow, there was only us and another group and the venue was not packed or busy. We waited quite a while to be greeted at our table as well aftwr being seated. However, during the experience, service was exceptional. From serve staff taking explaining the dishes to us to the staff wiping up our table between courses. Their attention to detail and promptness was lovely. At one point I had to leave the table for a long period of time so I missed the 5th course. They took it away because it was cold and brought me a fresh hot dish. They were extremely kind and thoughtful of my 9 year old. Misc notes before food review: This is not a kid friendly venue, especially if you have a picky eater or a child that doesn't like to venture out or expand their palate. There are options that kids could like but very limited. They do get to choose a la carte from the regular 4 course meal menu. There is a parking garage across the road that closes at 10. Worst parking and customer service experience of my life. Please dont pay to park here if you can help it. There's if some free or pay to park street parking. They have a 4 course regular menu for $90pp and a 7 course chef tasting menu for $175pp. The chef tasting menu is said to be limited time but looking at the other reviews, it seems like the chef tasting is pretty much the same and one or two courses vary. We were able to do the 7 course experience for $125 due to a promotion going on. Everyone had to do the same experience. Portions are quite small and you may leave not fully satiated. But the experience is lovely. I would say it is a little over priced, but again we pay for the ambience, presentation and experience. Drinks: I really enjoyed the drinks I was able to try. They are an experience when you receive them. The presentation is so lovely. See pictures. I got to try the lychee bomb which was excellent, and my favorite of the drinks I tried. Love the flavor pairings, sweet with some savory hints. Hocus pocus was a bourbon lovers dream. Great pairing of the berry puree and bitters with bourbon. The this is not lassi was really nice with lassi flavors with blackberry hints. And thick as well. The blush and bashful was tart and really unique. I tried it without the foam. And lastly the spring awakening, this was my least favorite. The alcohol pairing with the kiwi cucumber flavors didnt really fit to me. All the drinks definitely could tell had alcohol. Food: We did the non-vegetarian tasting with 7 courses. They do have a vegetarian tasting as well. The presentation of all the food was pretty lovely and I quite enjoyed that aspect. The sabudana vada and chana masala panisse was lovely, super flavorful and I would say my #2 for the night. Perfect start. First course - The tuna tartar pani puri was really nice and unique. I would never have thought to pair tuna with pani puri but it really worked. My #4 for the night. Second course - Hokkaido scallop... it was perfect. The hollandaise was so flavorful but did not over power the jumbo scallops natural taste. And the scallop wasnt over cooked. This is a scallop lovers dream. My #1 for the night. Third course - quail egg kaftan, this was a dense kofta, which i appreciated. Fourth course - black cod. It initially appeared undercooked and thought it would have a fishy smell and taste. Pleasantly surprised with the delicate way it was prepared yet no fishy taste or smell. Fifth course - lamb seekh kabob - this was a hand held one, which I enjoyed. All the flavors in one bite really brought thr flavors out. However this was probably my least favorite of the dishes. Sixth - pork cheeks vindaloo was really nice. Very tender and moist and rhe sauce was quite nice. Pre dessert was exquisite. It was so refreshing, cleansing, cool, and tart. It made my mouth water for dessert. Dessert we had the chocolate tart which was nice but nothing special that I noted. The chocolate and the crunch went nicely together. However if I had to choose I would go with the kesari mango dessert. My 9 year old waa able to do a la cart from the 4 course meal choices. The beef short rib was amazing! So tender, so we'll cooked, so flavorful I throughly enjoyed it. My #3 for the night. Garlic naan was soft and not to burnt. And her dessert, the kesari mango was super delicious especially the sesame brittle. Id love to try this one again. I probably wouldn't come here again unless someone specifically requested to come here. But overall my experience was a nice one. It was nice to try this once.
