Upscale, elevated Indian street food with some fusion twists. The menu is varied and there's a little something for everyone. I had the lamb chop which was a very sizable portion! Servers were nice and helpful with the menu, although another staff member bringing drinks to a nearby table accidentally spilled one all over my friend's foot. No harm done but they also didn't acknowledge the accident and barely offered to help until we asked for some napkins.

I've been wanting to go to Chai Pani for months now and finally snagged a reservation! They fill up on the weekends so I don't recommend trying to walk in unless it's earlier in the week. I ordered the gin rickey but honestly did not taste any alcohol so may have received the regular rickey?? It was very refreshing and flavorful. We got a bunch of dishes to share and everything comes family style. We tried the heirloom tomato chaat special and the disco bhel to start which were both solid. I enjoyed the fresh tomatoes and the mix of spicy/tangy flavors! We also ordered the sloppy jai, pav bhaji (veg), and spring veg uttapam. The uttapam didn't really wow me which is a bummer as someone who is always a fried pancake fan! The sloppy jai and pav bhaji were my favorites! The lamb in the jai was so tender and delicious and the rolls were soft and buttery. The pav bhaji was more of a sloppy joe texture than the lamb but enjoyed both. Service was solid with consistent water refills and check-ins!

Very cute restaurant. Lots of indoor seating. ADA accessible with ramp. Vibrant decoration of Indian culture (beautifully done). The prices for food were slightly higher. The food was good. For someone who doesn't handle spice well it was a good amount. The butter chicken my friend ordered had more lemon than tomato acidity. The pan puri had so much yogurt we could barely taste the other ingredients... They took while to bring us naan. Don't think I'd come back though. The service was sweet.

My husband & I stopped by Chai Paani in the Union market area during our trip to DC. The restaurant is conveniently located in the middle of a bustling neighborhood. We were promptly greeted & seated since we made a reservation prior to showing up at the restaurant. However, walk-ins do have to wait for a bit before being seated (because of how popular and crowded this restaurant is). I cannot say enough good things about the food, it took me right back to my time in India. All the flavors were authentic & hit the right spots! I wish I lived in DC so I could come here often!!!!

Finally got a chance to eat here! The space is BEAUTIFUL! Very thoughtful and intentional with the design. You walk in and it smells delicious, getting you ready for an amazing meal. Definitely recommend making a reservation. We walked in and got lucky to have two seats at the bar available for us, but don't risk it like us. We ordered the aloo tikki chaat and disco bhel to start. The aloo tikki chaat was amazing! So flavorful. We then shared the lamb which was incredible. The meat literally fell off the bone. I had a mango lassi on the side to balance the spice, which I recommend. And to end the night, we had to order the gulab jamun. Amazing!!! Ugh the warmth and sweetness is exactly what we needed. Amazing meal, can't wait to come back and try more from the menu!

Even though I had heard great things about this spot, we had been by it many times without going in. It looked like it might be a tourist trap, given the decor, but I was so wrong. The food was phenomenal. The chili chicken was spicy, crispy, filling, and a hearty portion, we ended up taking some home. There is a kids menu, high chairs, and super friendly service. I also loved the iced chai! We will be back for sure!

This restaurant offers everything you'd love: 1- Amazing hospitality from the door to the table. 2- Breathtaking scenery, providing pure cultural vibes with rich vibrant colors and festive music. 3- The BEST Indian street food, every dish was carefully prepared and told a story on the plate. 4- A place where ALL of your guests can enjoy a great meal. Jumping into my experience. I didn't make reservations and the hostess was so kind to accommodate me and inform me of other great opportunities to visit, one being their Pani Puri experience. Needless to say, I'll be back! I sat at the bar and received A+ service from Amanda who was supported by Renee. Amanda's personality is what you'd appreciate in a bartender, she knew the menu top to bottom and was excellent with recommending dishes and cocktails. Drinks: Kaapi Martini- a rich flavored Chai espresso martini. This drink, while delicious, was more on the creamy side and needed a half ounce more of liquor to take it from latte to cocktail. Other than that, the rich Chai taste was certainly divine but I like to have a break from sweetness or milky drinks when enjoying cocktails. Malabar- the STAR! This smokey drink was made with elite status in mind. It's the type of drink with a perfect credit score and a few properties in the Maldives-gosh this was amazing! The tequila stirred with Campari, fresh lemon, rose, and mezcal were paired together so beautifully, each supporting the other without canceling out in taste. It was the perfect balance and the smokiness added a mysterious flavor to the mix. I absolutely loved it! Golden Hour- another divine drink. Its bright color brought a festive vibe to the atmosphere and the vodka shaken with herbal liqueur, Indian turmeric, sweet pineapple, and fresh lime balanced well. It wasn't too sweet but it carried the right flavors with the turmeric and pineapple setting the tone with a citrus/warming feel. Food The Chaat and Street Food section: SPDP-toasted puffed up puris stuffed with potato, red onion and cilantro and topped with sweet yogurt, tamarind, and green chutneys. The final component was sev added on top, which is crunchy chickpea noodles. This dish, while messy to eat, is exactly what you want to order. IT WAS AMAZING! Let's explore the flavor profiles on this dish....first, the balance of sweet and spicy was insane! Imagine taking a bite and your mouth is hit with some sweet heat, that's what the sweet yogurt and tamarind offered all while the green chutney cooled down your mouth. It was ridiculously flavorful and divine! The Pav section: KFC sandwich aka Kashmiri Fried Chicken sandwich- the BEST chicken sandwich in town! As someone who adores a good chicken sandwich, there is a lot to be said about one whose flavor profile sweeps you off your feet with just one bite. The chicken breast was the juiciest and most perfectly seasoned!!!!! Brined to perfection, this chicken breast was amazingly juicy. Placed on a sweet toasted buttery bun and topped with Maggi-mayo and sweet pickles, I was stopped in my tracks by how delicious this was-my goodness! Sweets Gulab Jamun- This is the way to conclude a beautiful culinary experience. The Gulab Jamun was impeccable in taste and I tried a scoop of their ice cream on the side, sending my sweet tooth on the wild side. Both were perfect. Would I return? YES! You probably can't keep me away from this place!!!!! Do I recommend? ABSOLUTELY! Please support businesses that take the time to make their customers feel good all while painting a beautiful story through their dishes.

In-FREAKING-credible! You may have read my poor experience at an Indian restaurant the other day, but this restaurant more than makes up for it. My friend and I dined here after abandoning two other Indian spots in Noma as options. This place was eye-catching from a block and half away, humongous, like a warehouse, tall, festooned with color and visual tour de force. The service was phenomenal. The host, our server, the other servers, the food deliverer--every single one happy, friendly, conversational, and warm. They seem to love their job and want to share their energy with guests. The appetizer was a large portion of the sabudana vada tots, which were deep-fried tapioca root vegetable pearls with green chiles, served with a delicous tangy-sweet dip. SO SO AMAZING. Not a 5/5, a 10 of a 5. I can't explain my logic. We were also thoroughly impressed with the two utthapams we ordered: one mushroom and one cheese. The portions were huge, every bite as amazing as the last. The dipping sauces (coconut chutney and cilantro chutney) were described when delivered and tasted fabulous. The vibe. The ambiance. The food. Chef's kiss. Home-freaking-run! I will come back a thousand times. You oughta too.

Chai Pani was mildly underwhelming. The service was definitely a strength, including the host/hostesses. But the food left me underwhelmed. I got the chili chicken, which I expected to be spicy and it was. I also tried the okra which was cooked very creatively for a dish that is hard to make good. I ended with the lamb shank, the quality of the meat and how it was cooked was very good, but the sauce it came it was so spicy it made it hard to enjoy the dish. I love Indian food and Indian food fusion, and I'm used to the spice that comes with it, but between the chili chicken and lamb shank it felt like they were spicy for no reason, the spice didn't seem to enhance the flavor experience. I will say the drinks were solid, including the mango lassie. Overall, good spot and I recommend it - it just didn't quite meet expectations but the expectations were very high.

My wife and I recently ordered for a takeout dinner the okra fries, dal makhani, naan, and the cheese uthappam. While the delivery person through a third-party app took a while, the food was still warm when it arrived. The okra were quite salty, although deliciously crispy and seasoned. The cheese uthappam was the star dish-extremely flavorful, the perfect amount of cheese, amazing texture, and the coconut sauce was an ideal complement. The naan was rich and buttery, and the dal makhani was smoky, well-seasoned, and nicely salted. I highly recommend Chai Pani and I look forward to having Chai Pani again!

I cannot overstate what a fun experience this is for all of your senses. The sounds, sights, colors, size expanse of the space is a feast for the eyes. The staff is lovely, especially the greeter at the front who is so warm and Friend. The food is delicious their menu as well explained. The drinks are fabulous. And around the restaurant is some of the best shopping you will find worth the trip. The staff is lovely -especially the greeter at the front who is so warm and friendly

The photo experience begins before you enter the restaurant. The decorations add to the cheer inside. Chai Pani is location close to Union Market. We visited as soon as the place opened at 11:00am. The place fills quickly. If you are visiting for dinner, make a reservation. Parking is sometimes available nearby. When we see a spot, we grab it. There were tons of choices. The toasted SPDP was chilled, but accurately described. I didn't carefully read the description. It is full of powerful flavors. The Vada Pav looks like sliders. It is vegetarian. The mint chutney is good. The fried chilis are not hot. The Daal Makhani was a religious experience. The lentils are topped off with yogurt. They are baked overnight. Just delicious! The rice was a nice touch. It was a flavorful meal. The restaurant is colorful and fun. We'll be back.

This has been on my list to try since I saw them building it and well worth the wait! The decor on the outside is fun, whimsical, and whisks you away to India. The same bright colors and style follow through inside. As soon as you walk in, you're enamored with the most delicious scents that automatically get your stomach growling. We had a reservation and were seated promptly. Our waiter came over shortly and went through the menu concept and gave us her recommendations. Since they use a shareable plates style, it allows you to try many options. We started off with the chai tea which was a strong start. We decided to get the chili chicken, KFC chicken sandwich, and the lamb as our main entree. WHEW. Everything was a hit. The chili chicken was fried perfectly and paired well with the rice. The KFC sandwich was amazing. Crisped to perfection and the sauce on top took it over the edge. The lamb?! Tender to the touch. Every time we tried to pick it up to divide it, it kept falling apart. Definitely looking forward to coming back.

Dining…read more When Ashok Bajaj opened Rasika in Penn Quarter in 2005, he didn't just open a restaurant--he revolutionized how the nation's capital views modern Indian cuisine. Two decades later, it remains an absolute powerhouse and a masterclass in culinary consistency. The Accolades Rasika's trophy case is legendary. Chef Vikram Sunderam secured a prestigious James Beard Award for Best Chef: Mid-Atlantic, and the restaurant has consistently retained a top-tier spot on The Washington Post's 100 Very Best Restaurants list. It's the kind of place that effortlessly balances critical acclaim with a fiercely loyal local following, famously serving as a birthday hotspot for President Obama and a staple for D.C.'s culinary elite. The Menu While the iconic Palak Chaat gets plenty of well-deserved press, the true depth of the kitchen shines brightest in their classic entrees and customizable heat profiles. The Lamb Shank: A definitive triumph of slow-cooked execution. The meat is spectacularly tender, effortlessly falling away from the bone at the mere suggestion of a fork. Infused with a rich, aromatic blend of saffron and roasted coconut, the sauce achieves a profound depth of flavor that is both deeply comforting and complex. Saag Paneer (Malai Palak): Rasika's take on this classic elevates standard creamed spinach to an art form. The spinach retains a vibrant, fresh green character, expertly laced with garlic, onions, and green chilies. The paneer cubes are beautifully delicate, acting as the perfect velvety vehicle for the impeccably spiced greens. The House-Made Hot Sauce: For those who appreciate true heat, Rasika offers an exceptional house-made hot sauce that is cooked to order. Rather than just dumping standard chili oil on top, the kitchen freshly fires up this blend to your exact specifications, seamlessly integrating a fiery punch into your dishes without sacrificing an ounce of the underlying flavor profile. The Verdict Rasika isn't just a great Indian restaurant; it is one of the finest dining institutions in Washington, D.C. Whether you are a regular or a first-timer, the flawless execution of the lamb shank, the sophisticated balance of the saag paneer, and the tailored precision of their custom-cooked hot sauce make every meal feel like an event.

Then, as soon as you sit at the table, the wait staff is attentive to your needs and uses such care to keep your water glass refilled and your table cleared between meals. Thank you! Drinks: we were there for the happy hour so we both wanted to try something special. I ordered the Chai espresso martini and my boyfriend ordered the Pili margarita. The Chai espresso martini was GOLDEN! If this drink were to go up for cocktail of the year, it would come out on top. Might I say that chai is something that you can mess up and I've had encounters where it was watered down, not the case here. I tasted the fresh and real chai and the richly brewed espresso. This drink wasn't just a martini, it warranted deep conversation with each sip. My boyfriend raved about his Pili margarita and talked about how excellent it was to taste fresh mangoes, a burst of citrus, and spiciness. A beautiful culinary combination Safe to say that both drinks were our favs!!! I also had a glass of their white wine and it was dry and refreshing. Well done! Food: we ordered several dishes from the happy hour menu. Please note that they aren't shy of providing excellent portions. Manchurian wings: a star dish! The fry on the wings were perfect but the seasoning puts this dish over the top. Highly recommended! Vegetable samosa: flaky dough with the most delectable sautéed vegetables. You'd definitely want to try a few of these! Gobi manchurian: a beautiful dish for non-meat eaters and meat eaters. Similarly to the wings, these cauliflowers were perfectly fried and seasoned to perfection. Actually, at one point, I thought that I was eating a meat dish because it was so tender and juicy inside. Please don't miss ordering these! Spicy chicken tikka: the dish that makes you ask "what spices are in this? They're EXCELLENT!" Such a juicy and tender cut with the perfect blend of flavors. Order, order, order! I think it's safe to say that we enjoyed ALL of our selections and appreciated the modern twist on Indian food classics. They didn't stray too far from the beauty of these dishes but added just enough personality to win you over. Lastly, we ordered dessert! We originally went with their bread pudding which came with cardamom ice cream but the amazing host, Dave, surprised us with their special Gulab jamun. The cardamom ice cream was AHHH-MAY-ZIN (spelled how I need you to say it!) it was amazing! But let's get into this bread pudding. I have so many questions: who is the pastry chef? How did they master such perfect bread pudding? Also, why is this dessert SO GOOD?! Best bread pudding and ice cream EVER! And I don't say that often about much bread puddings. The Gulab jamun was also my favorite because it wasn't sweet as the others and I felt so satisfied taking bites of this with the beautiful ice cream they placed on top. It's a no brainer that I'm coming back soon and that I'm going to try their dinner menu next. Please make the reservations and go support this spot, you won't regret it!

The first time I visited, I was left wanting more in the flavor department. I asked for spicy, and although what I received would be considered spicy to some, it wasn't nearly as spicy as I expected for Indian cuisine. The depth of flavor can be inconsistent, although for American standards it is perfect. What I've experienced with some Indian restaurants is the flavor level depends on how close the batch is to almost empty. I've experienced some restaurants stretch their gravies by adding stock/water. Jab We Met seems to take pride in serving consistent gravy texture and consistency. The customer service is always good. The place was busy on a Fri night, so highly recommend making reservations. Order included Bison Momo ($16), Blue Cheese Reshmi Kebab ($14), Spicy Nawabi Duck Kebab ($16) which indeed had a subtle enjoyable spice kick to it! Meen Pollichathu ($28) came with a very delicious Khichdi, and the Wild Mushroom Biryani ($24) continues to be a top dish at this place. Gulab Jamun ($10) was a very comforting dessert and a perfect way to end the night! Service was excellent, and food arrived within 15-mins of placing the order. Noise levels on the average end, including a rather loud table next to us where the dude was definitely buzzed. Will continue to be one of our favorite places whenever we are in DC!

This is my second time dining at Daru & it is a favorite in the city for good reason! The first…read moretime I came (about 4 years ago), the dining room had a trendy, moody feel that made you feel like you were at the coolest spot in town & the food was packed with so much flavor. I remember we ordered the daal burrata, the bison momos (ordered a 2nd one we loved it so much), lamb shank, pesto paneer, scallops, etc). It was all perfect. Living across town, we don't come to H Street very often, so I finallyyyyy made it back after 4 years! Upon walking in, the staff were so nice and they also made sure our water cups were never empty! We ordered all the same favorites from my first time dining at Daru! This time, the food was still really good but not as flavorful as I remembered. If I were coming back, I would still order the lamb chops (so tender; cooked to perfection), the bison momos, the pesto paneer, scallops, and the garlic naan to soak up all the sauces. I would pass on the daal burrata and the potatoes though.

We've come to Rania probably half a dozen times since it opened, but last night was the first time…read morewe tried the full chef's tasting menu. Holy. Smokes. Certainly the best meal I've had in DC in years, which includes meals at Jont and P&P in the past several months. Unquestionably the best Indian meal I've had on Earth. The parade of dishes does not have a low point, which is incredible given the range of "mains" from chicken, to sable fish, to lamb taco, to pork cheek. Each dish shows clear French influence - we had most of the five sauces at least once - but with clear, vibrant warmth from Indian spices. Even at places like Eleven Madison and Le Bernardin, there's usually a miss or two. Not last night. Which brings me to the question: why not two Stars? Three? I think some of the answer comes back to ambiance and service. The chef's tasting does not have a dedicated space, flow, or timing. The rhythm of it can be somewhat offbeat with the constant arrival of over-the-top cocktails at the tables around you. And also, it has honestly felt like many of the waitstaff were "in training" on each of our recent visits. I know staff turnover is real and constant, and the staff last night were all perfectly kind, but I think there's a level of consistent experience - "worth a detour" - that has to elevate even perfect food beyond itself to garner the higher levels. Anyway, never mind that. And don't change a thing about the food or presentations. World class.

Rania was my first dining experience at a Michelin star restaurant. My partner and I decided to try…read morethe signature chef tasting menu, discounted to $125 per person as it was a weekday dinner reservation, as opposed to the $175 per person charge on the weekends. The tasting menu included 7 courses (drinks were a separate charge). Each course was creative, innovative, and presented beautifully (like a work of art). The flavors were phenomenal, especially on the seafood courses. My favorite course was the black cod fish with scallop foam - just divine. The meal fused Latin American and Indian flavors beautifully. While the food was out of this world, service and ambiance did not meet the standards of a Michelin starred restaurant. The dining space lacked creativity in its decor; it felt quite sterile. Service was fast and attentive but lacked the personal touch I expected. The acoustics in the restaurant are not good; we could barely hear the servers' explanation of the courses. Overall I found Rania to be a very good dining experience, and would recommend it to foodies looking for a unique fusion fine dining experience in DC
