Food was fantastic here and all the meat is halal! We ordered the tandoori chicken (bone in) it was fantastic so moist and flavorful. The lamb saag was very good (great saag flavor lamb super tender). Baingan bharta was so smoky and delicious; I would 100% order this again. We also got the idli sambar which was very yummy! I hadn't been here for a while. I was in the area to play pool league at the Atomic bar. My friend and I decided to try this place which is under a new management. My first impressions were not great as everything seemed pricey. $20 for a dosa and most of the curries were in the range of $24. We ordered Gobi Manchurian for appetizer. The taste was good, but the quantity was disappointing compared to some of the restaurants I have been to. Mysore masala dosa was great. Chutneys were so delicious. 5/5 for food. Coconut chicken curry was delicious as well. I think they will get more people if prices were slightly more reasonable. Service was great! read more

I recently got a garlic naan and the lamb vindaloo for takeout from Dakshin Indique for a weekday lunch and loved my food. I got the order exactly when it was supposed to arrive, although I didn't get plasticware (the recipe said I hadn't requested it, which wasn't the case). The garlic naan was large and delicious-plenty of garlic, crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside, and went perfectly with the rice and lamb vindaloo. The lamb was cooked perfectly, although I would have loved a few more chunks of lamb and more spice. I would recommend Dakshin Indique the next time you are in the mood for Indian food! read more

GLUTEN-FREE REVIEW: Dakshin has an extensive menu and is both informed and conscientious about gluten free food. I felt very safe, and the food was delicious, too. There's more to order than just the usual dal or palak paneer or jalfrezi that I usually order at other spots. As a side note: I've never seen a dosa so big. The dosa came on a special, long platter and reminded me of a party sub sandwich in size! The staff checked on us multiple times- seemingly not just because they were interested in our experience and wanted us to feel cared for, but because they are friendly. It was quiet when we were there, and we had a view of the street for people watching- and a nice, sunlit dinner. And they have homemade tonic syrups for drinks (alcoholic or non-)! There's both a regular tonic syrup and a garam masala tonic- bring a friend so you can order both. I got the regular tonic as a non-alcoholic drink, and my companion had the garam masala gin and tonic. Both were really good. We've discussed going back with friends just for drinks, since these are the best cocktails we've found within walking distance of our house so far. read more

I faces about the fabulous cocktails, the good service, the amazing food. and here's what happened: 1)they were "having issues" with their liquor license. 2)the food came out of the kitchen lukewarm 3)there weren't enough servers so the evening was a teeter totter of attention and no one to be found. 4)the bathroom was gross i hope it was an off night. but my recommendation credibility with my friends (something I'm hugely proud of) took a major hit. read more

UPDATED REVIEW: March 12, 2023 I experienced another takeout order over the weekend and it was consistent with the previous experience. The Chicken Curry was bland compared to traditional Indian flavor expectations and so was the Lamb Roganjosh. Both lacked a reasonable portion size for the price. From the photos you can see the gravy thinly coats the proteins. The owner did reach out to me recently after my last review in December 2023 to let me know the quality has improved and so did the portion size. Anticipating this I visited again this weekend and the portion size seemingly remained the same as you can see from the photos. With all of the protein removed from the containers what remained was a container 1/2 full with gravy that lacked richness. I also wish the restaurant would separate the portions of white rice and not assume the entrees would be consumed together by one person. The inconvenience here is if multiple people are eating the food, but not in the same place. When two entrees are purchased I think it makes sense to separate the white rice by portion. This is a high 2* experience however this place can be a 4* Indian restaurant with a few tweaks and attention to detail. PREVIOUS REVIEW: December 15, 2023 I've dined here before, inside the restaurant and it was a good experience. On this occasion I purchased takeout. What I love about ethnic food is it generally stands up well in transport i.e. takeout and delivery. However on this occasion while the food was OK I wasn't completely satisfied with the overall quality of the food I ordered. The flavor didn't quite rise up to the authenticity I expected from Indian cuisine and certainly not what I know this restaurant is (or once was) capable of producing. It could have been an off day in the kitchen however for the incredibly small quantities I received in my takeout order there really is no room for inconsistency. Friendly service and delicious food. I came in for dinner early on a Monday. I was welcomed in and promptly seated by a window in the bar, which is a cute area- colorful pillows and a comfy bench sit against the wall. The food itself was hot and delicious. I got the chicken tikka makhani and garlic naan. I wasn't asked spice level, and it was definitely milder than I'm used to, but great flavor. I'm sure they would have accommodated if you like it really spicy (I personally don't like to set my tongue ablaze, so I was good). Made a reservation for a group of 7 at Dakshin Indique unsure about the restaurant. The menu looked fantastic and reviews looked great, but it was one of those places where I had never heard about it (word of mouth is important!). Fear not, I will be talking about this place non-stop. My friends and I sat for the bottomless brunch plates (not the drinks, though that is an option). We weren't super familiar with Southern Indian cuisine, but after a few embarrassing mispronunciations, we tried almost all of the available plates. Every single dish was liked unanimously, and I heard no complaints across the table. It was a really colorful and fun Sunday brunch spin that introduced us to new dishes, but the atmosphere and service is also worth mentioning. The restaurant was very clean and manicured, lots of natural light that was appreciated on a sunny day like this one! The service was quick too, with our waters being refilled in a timely manner and the food coming out as prepared. This is definitely my new brunch spot to get away from the same old bottomless you can find throughout the district! read more

They mentioned that they have new owners/management so it's possible they are still finding their groove but we have to be honest and it pains me to give them 3 stars so let me start by explaining... the food is delicious and staff are nice, it's just not seasoned like traditional Indian food. The food tastes like a westernized, milder version for non-Indians who have never had Indian food or who can't handle the seasonings of regular Indian food. The lamb roganjosh was like soup and not creamy at all, tasted like regular soup/sauce made in any kitchen and not like an Indian curry. It wasn't bad, just not Indian tasting. The mango lassi was too much on the lighter side in color and tasted like it had more yogurt than mango. It was delicious, just not what was expected. The chicken biryani had a bit more flavor than the lamb roganjosh so it was my second favorite thing however, I would be lying if I said the flavors weren't muted - we didn't even eat the yogurt with it because the flavor was already light. The garlic naan is the only thing that checked all the boxes - it was fluffy, flavorful and quite big which made me very happy. I would recommend getting that if you ever go. I don't know if the mild flavor is intentional for the new owners or if it's just a mishap as they figure things out but I was disappointed because I love Indian food and had been looking forward to having it for dinner. That said, if you have never had Indian food before, I think this would be a great place to start in order to see if you can handle more. If you like Indian food but feel like it's usually too spicy or the seasonings mess with your stomach, this is also a perfect balance for it. Besides people who love and enjoy traditional, Indian cuisine, I truly think there is a crowd for this restaurant and they just need to intentionally market it to them. read more

This is one of my favorite places for Indian food in the area! Not only is there food good, but I love their unique cocktails! Their mini dosa appetizer and bhel puri are my two favorite dishes. Additionally, even though the other restaurants around the area are always crowded, I have always been able to get a table here. The service is quick and the waiters always give me great recommendations. The only reason I can't get this place to five stars is that it is expensive considering the relatively small portion sizes. I really wanna know what people got that wasn't as spicy as they were expecting or where their issues with the spice were, whatever. Everyone has opinions. Anyway, we started with the House of Cardamom and Mumbai Mule drinks on recommendation from our server. Both were super good and I liked the subtle notes of the cardamom on mine. We had the Vegetable Mini Dosa and Samosa Chaat to start. Both drew rave reviews, including the chutney accompanying the Dosa. Mains were the Tellicherry Peppercorn Chicken and the Malabar Fish Curry, which were very nicely spiced and super tasty. We brought home leftovers and maybe could have used a smidge more spice on the fish curry, but everything was super good. As was our side paratha bread. Only minor nitpick is the appetizers came out very quickly, barely 5 minutes after we'd ordered them. That was interesting. read more

I really love Indique's brunch. I love an international bottomless brunch because I don't really eat American cuisine, so Indique's fits the bill. I've only been for brunch, but keep meaning to get here for happy hour and dinner. Their brunch is fun. They play good music and have unlimited tamarind margaritas, brunch punch, mimosas, and more. I really like the tamarind margaritas because I love tamarind. The brunch food is a fun take on Indian. I like the chicken paratha tacos, because paratha actually makes a really good taco shell. The pickled pork belly is tender and flavorful. And a more traditional chicken tikka makhani makes me happy. I'm obsessed with the appam waffle. The cardamom jaggery sauce is delectable and addictive. Recently, a couple at the next table let me know that the chef is from Kerala (same as them), so the menu tends to have a distinctive taste from that state. Certain items, such as the waffle or the Tellicherry beef are noted Keralite dishes. Indique is one of the few restaurants that serves these dishes, so I really need to get back and try more southern Indian cuisine. Staff is friendly and service is excellent. I was once served food on a dirty plate but they took care of that. The only recommendation I would have is that during brunch, they portion the food for party size. For example, as a solo diner, I would appreciate one taco, instead of two. I look forward to returning to Indique soon. read more

Was super optimistic because of all of the great reviews but was overall disappointed. Good cocktails and the bhel puri was great. But everything else was pretty bland and disappointing. Tried another new place during these crazy times and I think it went well overall! What did I get? I've been pretty busy with work so I've been ordering extra to have leftovers the next day...and maybe the next day. Don't judge! I got mango lassi (always a yes), saag paneer, lamb vindaloo, and garlic naan. Mango lassi was pretty standard though I almost wasn't to say I've had some that have a smoother or creamier texture but all good. Saag paneer was pretty good. I wish the cheese was in smaller cubes but fork it! It's easily remedied. Now not sure if people know because I did not...palak paneer vs saag paneer. Difference is in which region of India and also spinach vs any combo of greens. Thank you, Google! Now the lamb vindaloo. I think it was good. I say think because it was much spicier than I expected. I cried a little while eating it but it was good. It got me to eat a lot of the rice and naan. Thinking about it still makes my taste buds tingle lol. It was good just be aware it's not the usual "spicy" level people usually get in restaurants which I appreciate. I think I'll order here again. I went to this restaurant when I was visiting DC with my family. We sat outside, and it was a lovely time. Their samosas were plated in a way that I'd never seen before (think vertical food), and they were DELICIOUS. Really, all the food was very good. The service, while friendly, wasn't as good as I would hope. They seemed not to have some of their systems ironed out in weird ways--my friend arrived after my family, and they put her plate and her silverware by different chairs; they asked for our order, and then went inside to get an electronic system. On the whole, though, it was a very good experience. I would definitely go again if I'm ever in DC! read more

Yes, you should do the weekend brunch ($25) and yes you should add the unlimited brunch cocktails (additional $12). Dishes you shouldn't miss out on are: 1) Chicken Kebab Eggs Benedict - minced chicken, garlic, ginger, poached egg, paratha, masala hollandaise 2) Chicken Tikka Makhani - boneless tandoori chicken, tomato gravy, fenugreek 3) Appam Waffle Sundae - rice + coconut milk waffle, toasted coconut gelato, cardamom jaggery syrup 4) Cookie Butter Dosa - lentil + rice savory crepe, speculoos cookie butter, cream Since it was AYCE, we pretty much tried 80% of the brunch menu. Make sure you only fill up on things that are actually good! Service wasn't the best, especially during the rush of people. They got orders mixed up frequently and took a long while to get us certain dishes. It was understandable since it got pretty busy, but that just means management needs to make sure they're staffed appropriately. I came here for brunch and we ate our faces off. They have a $25 unlimited brunch plate option (food only, drinks cost extra). We initially told the waiter that we wanted two of everything, but he was against that methodology. Instead, we ordered our dishes in waves, the number of orders for each dish was left at the waiter's discretion, and the pacing was up to the kitchen. Overall, our meal was at a good pace, and the waiter did an adequate job of judging how many orders for each dish - since it is all-you-can-eat (AYCE), you can always order more of something (which we did). Must get: - Samosa Chaat - not your traditional samosa, but the flavors are there and bonus points for creative presentation! One plate is probably enough for three or four. - Chicken Tikka Makhani - tender chicken in their creamy tikka makhani sauce (think tikka masala and butter chicken), served with basmati. - Papri Chaats - pita chips, potatoes, and chickpeas in a cool and creamy yogurt with tamarind and cilantro chutneys drizzled on top. A cool finish to add on top of any of their savory dishes. Serving size is a big bowl, which was enough for our table of six. - Cookie Butter Dosa - better than their savory dosas! This cookie butter dosa hit the spot! The dosa was crispy, had warm, gooey cookie butter on the inside, and was garnished with some mixed berries on top. It was so good, we ordered another round for the table. Pro tip: Ask to get it a la mode (aka add ice cream)! Also enjoyed: - Chicken Kebab Eggs Benedict - because no brunch is complete without your eggs benny. The poached egg was perfectly cooked. - Bhelpuri - the first time I heard of Indique, I was at a farmers market and they were doing a cooking demo... with samples! They served their bhelpuri, and I've been a fan ever since. This is one of my favorite Indian street snacks, as I love the texture from the puffed rice. - Achari Chicken Paratha Taco - one of the first dishes we were served. Flavorful chicken and beautiful presentation. Other dishes we tried: - Lamb Dosa and Veggie Dosa - each plate comes with one deconstructed dosa (served in a cone shape) - Breakfast Kathi Roll - nothing special - Tellicherry Peppercorn Beef - has a kick to it (aka spicy), beef was tough - Vegetable Shepherd's Pie - has paneer at the bottom - a nice surprise - Pickled Pork Belly - I liked the flavor of the pork belly, but it was very fatty. I wasn't a fan of the coconut milk + rice pancake; it was gelatinous - Appam Waffle Sundae - not what I was expecting for a sundae. It was actually just waffles (and not your Belgian waffles, as noted on the menu, these are rice + coconut milk waffles, which were a sweeter version of the pancake that came with the pork belly dish) and ice cream on top, topped with some mixed berries - Additional items ordered: Vegetable Biriyani; Masala Omelette; and Parfait (for dessert) Pass on the: - Cauliflower Pecorino Kulcha - cheese was overpowering - Salmon Slider - salmon was overcooked; no distinct flavor other than tasting fishy We came to celebrate a birthday, but they didn't do anything special. I've done unlimited brunches elsewhere. There is definitely some room for improvement here, particularly in the order taking. Pretty sure only 1 of 3 of my first round orders actually ended up on the table the first round, the 2nd item showing up after asking about it 15 minutes later and the 3rd item never showed and I was too full by then to still get it (Got the dessert items instead). Definitely have a reservation and be aware that the noise level is pretty loud in here as it is definitely a popular brunch spot. The food was pretty good. The breakfast kathi roll was my favorite, and the cookie butter 'dosa' was tasty as well. But I feel like the food could be better. I get it, it's quantity over quality here, but still other restaurants do a similar concept and the food tastes just a smidge better at the other places I've tried. read more

Here is the main problem. This is not authentic Indian food. And this problem is not unique to this Indian restaurant. They add sugar to most, if not all, gravy dishes i.e. anything that is not dry. This is a move to satisfy the "American " (i.e. "white") palate, and neutralize the natural heat that the spices (which are there, and I can taste) give out. I ordered about 5 gravy dishes last night and every one of them had added sugar, an absolute no in any self-respecting Indian kitchen with the exception of Gujarati (Gujarat - State in India) dishes where they do add sugar to many of their savory dishes. This restaurant does not advertise its cuisine as Gujarati. Dven their Veg Biryani had a little added sugar. Their breads and Tandoori Chicken chops (which are both dry- and anything dry for that matter) are excellent. But the rest of it, I wouldn't touch them again. Sorry - unless you leave out the sugar and invite me back, my review stands. I am of South Indian heritage and I cook myself. And I just noticed that this restaurant advertises as South Indian, which makes sense - Dakshin means South in Hindi. Yelp doesn't allow me to post a new review, so this is my second edit. A special mention to the Chicken Chettinad (or Chettinad Chicken) dish. Chettinad is an area in the deep south of India in a district called Ramanathapuram (google it). The Chettiyars are a proud people with a talent for trade and commerce. The district has some tremendous houses with marble floors and huge burmese teak pillars ( the chettiyars made a lot of money in Burma, now Myanmar, in the teak and other businesses). Chettinad weather is extremely hot most of the year and their cuisine is the same, very hot with peppercorn and red chillies, the heroes of most gravy dishes. Chettinad Chicken is one of the cuisine's claim to fame and it is supposed to be flaming hot. Nothing else qualifies. Dakshin's Chettinad Chicken has added sugar and tastes mildly sweet. This would be called dessert anywhere in South India, and the chef who is responsible for this wouldn't have a job as it would be considered as insulting to the community. I could go on but I tried again this morning, to check if my taste buds were wrong last evening. They were not. read more

I was very impressed with Indique. Unlimited Indian food and drinks for brunch?! I mean, what more can you ask for? Especially given the relatively modest cost (~$30). The brunch small plates are great for sharing or for keeping all to yourself. My lamb dosa wins points for both appearance and flavor. The pickled pork belly served on a rice pancake was so very tender. I also tried a peppercorn beef dish, a vegetarian shepherds pie, mini salmon burgers, and I believe a samosa chaat. My friends spoke highly of the wraps on the menu, but as I don't eat eggs I stayed away. The house cocktail of the day was a white wine spritzer and was more tequila than wine. And if you think that's a complaint you don't know me. It was a pleasant surprise and I'm glad I had a nice cushion to absorb all that. The tamarind margarita was pretty good though the seeds took a minute to get used to. They also serve a mango lassi with rum, something I'd never thought of by I'm glad someone did. Decided to try this place for brunch after a recommendation from a friend. $25 for unlimited tapas style food and $12 for bottomless drinks. AMBIANCE: A small two-story spot in Cleveland park right by the Metro. With different color painted walls and hand-crafted Indian artwork on the walls, it was a nice vibe. FOOD: The presentation was great. Even a dish as simple as a samosa had nice presentation. The food was spicy to me and I love spicy food. Started with the samosa chaat and chicken tikka makhani. The chicken tikka makhani was basically chicken in a creamy tomato sauce with rice served on the side. It was very delicious. DRINKS: I am always a fan of Margaritas. I saw the Tamarind Margarita on the drink menu and figured I'd give it a try. It is definitely an acquired taste and although I am a huge fan of tamarind, I did not like it. The after taste tasted too much like Indian food/spices rather than a refreshing drink to enjoy alongside delicious Indian food/spices. The Rum Lassi on the other hand was absolutely delicious. It was basically an alcoholic mango smoothie. I ordered two of those and left with a buzz. SERVICE: The service was definitely subpar mostly due to the buffet style menu. We were never asked if we wanted more drinks. Each time, we had to approach the server ourselves to place a drink order. A reason I am deducting a star is because we were forced to either have the entire table choose a la carte or have the entire table choose the buffet option. This was annoying due to the fact that some members of our large party were pickier eaters and some did not want to drink as much. Overall, this place was a good experience. I have been eyeing this place for a while now. My friend decided to take me for my birthday and everything was delicious. We ordered the lamb shank, chaat papri, saag paneer, lamb vindaloo, garlic naan and mango lassi. All of the meats were fall off the bone. We enjoyed the vindaloo more since the broth was so rich in flavor and cumin. Big tip try to drink the lassi towards the end of the meal as it definitely had a lot of tryptophan and made us sleepy. Flavors here are authentic and prices are reasonable. When we arrived the restaurant was completely packed. If you want great Indian food that won't break the bank this is your spot. Awesome brunch! It's $25 for unlimited small plates and additional $12 for bottomless mimosas/cocktails. I ended up ordering just about every vegetarian item on the menu. I started off with the cookie butter dosa which hands down was my favorite item there. Ever had trade joes cookie butter? Tastes even more amazing when you put it on a dosa! The dosa was crispy and topped with berries and powdered sugar. It was honestly so good I wanted to order another one but wanted to save room to try all the other items so I didn't. Next I ordered the chat duo. It comes with a small scoop of bhel and Papadi Chat. The bhel was decent but I absolutely loved the papadi chat and definitely recommend getting it! The vegetarian breakfast Kati roll was really good! Ended up getting it twice. Also got the egg dosa right after followed by the masala omelette. The masala omelet and the Kati rolls were my favorite of these three. Next I ordered the vegetables shepherds pie. It was awful. There are much better things on the menu then just a bunch of potatoes so it was nothing special. Also though the masala veggie burgers were average. Was starting to get full but I ordered the apam waffle sundae and asked them to put a scoop of ice cream in it. Very tasty! Presentation of the food is phenomenal and definitely picture worthy. Awesome brunch! $25 for unlimited small plates and $12 bottomless cocktails/mimosas. If in the cathedral heights area check it out. Food was great, plates and silverware were clean. Strong drinks (recommend: punch rum and lassi rum). Gave this place a 4 out of 5 because our server Amit though a nice guy, continuously served our food late, I get they were busy and servers have to manage multiple tables but if he's not running the food or drinks, why are they late and continuously asking what we ordered? Their waffle and Sunday on the brunch menu were pretty subpar, there are other "Indian" desserts I think would be better for the small plates atmosphere. Also their pickled pork belly though deliciously, reminded me of the spicy Korean noodles you buy from an Asian mart than South Indian cuisine. OVERALL, you gotta try the Benedict chicken kabob, which was a fun fusion of flavors, oh and the masala chicken and pepper beef were amazing hands down. I also, enjoyed the aloo chaat if you're into potatoes and chick peas (aka chana ;)) Anyway, for a first time visit my boyfriend and I had a great time, praise for the liquor giving patience and we were happy to walk 20 mins back to the national cathedral or else we would of rolled ourselves home. I recommend their Saturday brunch - delicious! Since it's bottomless small plates, I think we ended up sharing most of the menu options. My favorite were the tacos (so much interesting flavor and texture), the peppercorn beef and the kulcha. Eggs are pretty much my favorite food, so I was disappointed by the runny, super oniony omelette, which was my least favorite dish. They also have some unique cocktails as part of the bottomless deal. A few were way too sweet for me, so I stuck with the classic mimosa, which they refilled often, to my delight. The staff who greeted us then later came by to check on us were very friendly and kind. My only complaint about the restaurant itself is that it was freezing the day we went. It was already cold and they had fans on. I kept my coat on for most of the meal, but warmed up eventually from food and alcohol lol. Overall though, it was a nice brunch place. read more

Visited Indique for the first time for their bottomless brunch on a Saturday. The restaurant look and feel is very authentic with 2 levels. The service is pretty good, servers were very kind and quick. Food - There are plenty of vegetarian options on the menu. Other bottomless brunches I've visited, the portions are usually very small for each plate as it's unlimited, but here the portions for almost everything is huge. Would recommend ordering one plate between 2 people in the beginning to try all the different items on the menu. If you begin with a plate for yourself, you may get full easily. The portions are pretty big. My favorite was the Cookie Butter Dosa! It was so delicious. Also the Appam Waffle w/ ice cream was really good. The plain Dosa and samosa chaat were also really good. Some improvements needed for main course items. The Papri chat needs to add some chole to it. It only had a ton of yogurt and some chutney. The vegetable shepherds pie, was not that tasty. It had a weird texture to it as well. Personally did not like it. Also the veg Kathi roll did not much flavor and was kinda bland. Would also recommend having various options for kulcha. They only have a cauliflower flavored kulcha but would love some other options as well. Overall a decent experience, something new to try and price is not so bad. read more
