    Garlic naan and plain naan
    Maria L.

Wonderful service and delicious food. A wonderful bday celebration. Samosa chaat were delicious and so festive looking! I loved my chicken tikka extra spicy and garlic naan. My friend's Mom enjoyed her Dosa and took the rest home. Always have enjoyed the food and lovely people here. Will be back.

    Lamb Vindaloo

I recently got a garlic naan and the lamb vindaloo for takeout from Dakshin Indique for a weekday lunch and loved my food. I got the order exactly when it was supposed to arrive, although I didn't get plasticware (the recipe said I hadn't requested it, which wasn't the case). The garlic naan was large and delicious-plenty of garlic, crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside, and went perfectly with the rice and lamb vindaloo. The lamb was cooked perfectly, although I would have loved a few more chunks of lamb and more spice. I would recommend Dakshin Indique the next time you are in the mood for Indian food!

    great dessert.

Straight up delicious. I'm not one to pass out undeserved 5 star reviews. I am very critical. This was a delightful order to receive via delivery. I was impressed by the thoughtful display of the yummy dessert.

    Chicken Curry Lamb Roganjosh
    Hammed A.

UPDATED REVIEW: March 12, 2023 I experienced another takeout order over the weekend and it was consistent with the previous experience. The Chicken Curry was bland compared to traditional Indian flavor expectations and so was the Lamb Roganjosh. Both lacked a reasonable portion size for the price. From the photos you can see the gravy thinly coats the proteins. The owner did reach out to me recently after my last review in December 2023 to let me know the quality has improved and so did the portion size. Anticipating this I visited again this weekend and the portion size seemingly remained the same as you can see from the photos. With all of the protein removed from the containers what remained was a container 1/2 full with gravy that lacked richness. I also wish the restaurant would separate the portions of white rice and not assume the entrees would be consumed together by one person. The inconvenience here is if multiple people are eating the food, but not in the same place. When two entrees are purchased I think it makes sense to separate the white rice by portion. This is a high 2* experience however this place can be a 4* Indian restaurant with a few tweaks and attention to detail. PREVIOUS REVIEW: December 15, 2023 I've dined here before, inside the restaurant and it was a good experience. On this occasion I purchased takeout. What I love about ethnic food is it generally stands up well in transport i.e. takeout and delivery. However on this occasion while the food was OK I wasn't completely satisfied with the overall quality of the food I ordered. The flavor didn't quite rise up to the authenticity I expected from Indian cuisine and certainly not what I know this restaurant is (or once was) capable of producing. It could have been an off day in the kitchen however for the incredibly small quantities I received in my takeout order there really is no room for inconsistency. Overall the experience could have been better. Knowing their reputation I'll give their takeout another try if in the area.

Friendly service and delicious food. I came in for dinner early on a Monday. I was welcomed in and promptly seated by a window in the bar, which is a cute area- colorful pillows and a comfy bench sit against the wall. The food itself was hot and delicious. I got the chicken tikka makhani and garlic naan. I wasn't asked spice level, and it was definitely milder than I'm used to, but great flavor. I'm sure they would have accommodated if you like it really spicy (I personally don't like to set my tongue ablaze, so I was good). The portion was just right for me to finish everything with no leftovers and be perfectly full. Definitely would go back for quality Indian food!

They mentioned that they have new owners/management so it's possible they are still finding their groove but we have to be honest and it pains me to give them 3 stars so let me start by explaining... the food is delicious and staff are nice, it's just not seasoned like traditional Indian food. The food tastes like a westernized, milder version for non-Indians who have never had Indian food or who can't handle the seasonings of regular Indian food. The lamb roganjosh was like soup and not creamy at all, tasted like regular soup/sauce made in any kitchen and not like an Indian curry. It wasn't bad, just not Indian tasting. The mango lassi was too much on the lighter side in color and tasted like it had more yogurt than mango. It was delicious, just not what was expected. The chicken biryani had a bit more flavor than the lamb roganjosh so it was my second favorite thing however, I would be lying if I said the flavors weren't muted - we didn't even eat the yogurt with it because the flavor was already light. The garlic naan is the only thing that checked all the boxes - it was fluffy, flavorful and quite big which made me very happy. I would recommend getting that if you ever go. I don't know if the mild flavor is intentional for the new owners or if it's just a mishap as they figure things out but I was disappointed because I love Indian food and had been looking forward to having it for dinner. That said, if you have never had Indian food before, I think this would be a great place to start in order to see if you can handle more. If you like Indian food but feel like it's usually too spicy or the seasonings mess with your stomach, this is also a perfect balance for it. Besides people who love and enjoy traditional, Indian cuisine, I truly think there is a crowd for this restaurant and they just need to intentionally market it to them.

This place was AMAZING!!! From the minute we got here we felt so welcome and the service was so top notch. Di the owner was so so friendly, and you can tell that everything about this place, from the food to the drinks to the atmosphere is made with love and care. The paneer makhani and masala dosa were absolutely delicious--I can't wait to come back and try more dishes!

    Bhel Puri
    Kristen H.

This is one of my favorite places for Indian food in the area! Not only is there food good, but I love their unique cocktails! Their mini dosa appetizer and bhel puri are my two favorite dishes. Additionally, even though the other restaurants around the area are always crowded, I have always been able to get a table here. The service is quick and the waiters always give me great recommendations. The only reason I can't get this place to five stars is that it is expensive considering the relatively small portion sizes. But if you have some money to spend, and are in the area, I definitely recommend this place!

Unfortunately, the last few visits haven't been great, and tonight was the worst it's ever been. I ordered the matar paneer and it was watery and almost completely flavorless, which is very unlike what I've had there before. The rice was even more disappointing -- it tasted old and was hardened into clumps, almost molded into the shape of the container instead of being individual grains. It was difficult to even break apart. The samosas were good, which was the one bright spot, but the garlic naan barely had any garlic on it. Normally their naan is amazing and very flavorful. I'm really disappointed because this used to be my go-to spot for Indian food. We were very hungry but decided on 4 smaller plates, which was exactly the right amount of food. Highly recommend their Crab Kathi Roll appetizer, the Crispy Spinach with Dates, the Chicken Cafreal and the Eggplant Fritters - although the mild spicing and flavor of the eggplant was outshone by the other robustly flavored items; still tasty though. We made a lunch reservation on OpenTable and made our way to the highly anticipated Chai Pani. Once we were seated, the waitress greeted us and asked if we had dined at Chai Pani before. Since it was our first time, she gave us an overview and explained that the dishes are great for sharing. They also had some specials - the magic masala tomato chaat and grilled swordfish were being featured. We started with the kale pakora chaat ($15) and SPDP ($13). We loved the kale pakora chaat! My standard for a kale chaat is Rasika's signature palak chaat. Chai Pani's kale chaat holds their own. This chaat is more frittery than loose kale pieces, which made it easier to serve and share with the group. The flavor and texture were on point. The addition of the grapes and melon seeds gave the dish more sweetness, freshness, and great presentation. I would definitely order this again. The SPDP (puffed puris) were yogurt-laden, which made them less appealing. When they were brought to the table, the waiter instructed us that they are meant to be eaten in one bite. I appreciate the instruction, but the puris are a little big (it would be easier to eat in two bites). I didn't really taste the other ingredients other than the puri shell overloaded with yogurt. For the entrees, we ordered the butter chicken ($22) and lamb kala masala ($34). Both came with a small bowl of jeera rice. The lamb shank was excellent! I've had the lamb shank at the Michelin-rated Rania, and Chai Pani's lamb shank is better! The meat was tender and moist. It fell off the bone - always a sign of great cooking. The butter chicken was solid but was not a standout dish. This curry definitely had some heat to it, but the portion felt small for the price. It had a smoky flavor to it and used white breast meat, so it was on the dry side. We also got a side of naan which was pretty standard but great for sopping up the curry. Service was kind and bubbly. It started out strong, but it waned as the meal went on. We were checked on when the starters came out, but not necessarily checked on when the mains came out. She was knowledgeable of the menu and did check if we wanted to order any more drinks. The table was set with a water carafe, so we were able to take care of our own water cup refills. Bottom line - I would come back here again. I think the chaats and street food dishes are where Chai Pani really shines, and the lively, upbeat ambiance adds to the enjoyment. Chai Pani is a lovely addition to the Union Market neighborhood - definitely check it out!
