This concept is genius! Can we have fast food that tastes like real, flavorful food? Yes! Apparently we can. First off, it's actually fast. Like, on par with McDonald's, if not faster. You can walk in, order a bowl, and it will be assembled quickly in front of you. Second off, the taste is decent. Not outstanding, but certainly solid and filling. I would happily eat it again. (Would recommend adding veggies to the bowls.)Third, the restaurant is really pretty. Whoever designed/decorated it did excellent. Prices aren't awful.......15-16$ for a decent sized bowl. Stopped in to see if ready made Kati rolls and bowls were in the case on the wall. It was empty but a staff member asked what I would like to order (made on premises). I decided on a Bombay veggie pao (Indism style veggie burger). It came out fairly soon wrapped in foil in a cardboard container. The bun was warm, fluffy, light and sprinkled with spices. The patty was soft on the inside and stuffed with mashed potato and chickpeas. It was spicy and savory. Outside was crispy. The patty was topped with mint-cilantro chutney. This offshoot of Bindaas replaces another Indian fast casual spot that I really didn't like. The menu here is broader and better. I have to say though, I wasn't wildly impressed. I got a vada pav with fries, and I was underwhelmed by the sandwich and overwhelmed by the amount of fries. The sandwich, which is basically also fried potato, didn't come with quite the accompaniments I think I got at the sit-down Bindaas, and it certainly wasn't Chai Pani level (noting that there is now a Chai Pani in DC). The fries had a bit of spice and were satisfying in a basic way. But I ended up wishing I'd gotten something with a little bit more variety to it. Truthfully, I wish I could give a 0 star review. I really enjoy Bindaas food, they're a great fast casual version of Rasika (and are owned by the same people). I wanted to try something new today, and ordered the Paneer Korma. I had no idea there were nuts in the sauce, and typically restaurants post nuts/shellfish etc next to the menu item. I asked if I could get the Tikka Masala instead, and the owner gave no apology. Instead, he told me that I should tell the restaurant what I'm allergic to before ordering. He said, "We're giving you a new one, what else would you like us to do?" And headed to the kitchen, where I could no longer see him. Either way, the hostess at Rasika directed us to Bindaas Bowls and Rolls. I must say I was initially very disappointed by the change of plans and was very skeptical that their impromptu referral would be good BUTTTTTTT it definitely was! Bindaas Bowl and Rolls is an intimate Indian restaurant that gives the fast food vibes of Cava! I got a veg bowl and was blown away by the freshness of the salad, the toothsomeness of the spinach, paneer, and sweet potato koftas, and the general yumminess of the rice, beans, and veggies. I got the chicken tikka masala kathi roll and it was pretty good! I wish it was made-to-order and not grab-and-go, as the lettuce inside was really soggy. I also wish the roll came with a sauce to give it a little more oomph. The flavors were just ok and on the salty side. Because of these reasons, I'm not sure I would get a roll again. The sticky toffee pudding was also in the grab-and-go section, and it was really good! It was very sweet and moist, but only when fresh (it was dry when cooled to room temp). It is a bowl situation. And that's good, and quality and taste very much reproduced in every visit (over 10 times in more than year and half). Whether it is bowl or entree or chaat item or drink, they always had perfect taste. The staff are very courteous and waiting time was short. Often the store manager/owner came out and talked to us and I see families and business men and yes a lot of local elites. Over time, we ended up in relishing gun powder fries and Vada Paav and paneer dish. Mango lassi is awesome too. I frequent a lot of Indian restaurants in DC since I am from India myself. I've previously been to the Bindaas in the GW area and had a great experience there but my experience here was nothing short of terrible. We had ordered Lamb Vindaloo but we had a few problems with it. First off, the brown rice was tough as hell, secondly the lamb vindaloo curry was extremely salty. Credit where it's due, the rajma was good. When we went up to the counter to ask for a refund or a replacement since it wasn't exactly edible enough, the manager I think? He was extremely dismissive to our request. He said that the brown rice is supposed to be tough and kept telling us that the curry is "spicy" and not salty. When I went to the counter the second time I informed him that we have no problem with the spice level but the salt is just overbearing and the rice is extremely tough, I invited him to try it and he said that "I know how it tastes, we made it here" if anything this came off as completely rude and condescending. Ultimately after a conversation he decided to replace it with a less spicy and sweet korma curry which was the same quality as the vindaloo. This experience was a stark contrast to the experience we had at the Bindaas at GW. I understand that this is a fast moving place but would've expected around the same level of hospitality and quality since they share the same brand. I created my own bowl, ordering chicken tikka with half moilee sauce and half tikka masala. The tikka masala has a standard smooth buttery flavor which complements well with the chicken. The moilee is a milky coconut sauce that I also thought paired well with the meal. The ambience is pretty casual, as this is like an Indian chipotle. I've been passing Bindaas Bowls and Rolls in Penn Quarter for the past few months and was eager to give it a try. Having gone to the Bindaas restaurant in Foggy Bottom, which I really loved, I had high hopes for this location! After checking out the Rothkof exhibit with my sister, we ventured to Bindaas B&R excited to try their Tikka Masala and Kathi Rolls. For my bowl, I got the Basmati Rice, Chicken Tikka Masala, Black Eyed Peas Masala, and salad. The rice and Chicken Tikka were solid, however, not as spicy to my liking. With that being said, if you prefer a more mild, sweet Tikka, this is the dish for you. The Black Eyed Peas were delicious! Think of it as a Channa Masala minus the chickpeas and swap in the Black Eyed Peas. Very flavorful, soft and packed with spice. The salad was also a fantastic addition to the meal. I could taste how each of the thin vegetables was drizzled with lime juice - just like a classic Indian side salad my mom makes with each of our meals! I also got the Vada Pav, called the Bombay Burger on their menu, and it was phenomenal! A deliciously buttered bun, spicy cilantro chutney, jalapeños, and a potato center filled with spicy mirchi (chili). This item tasted incredibly authentic and is something I would definitely come back for. The staff was incredible! Very patient, accommodating, and kind as we enjoyed our meal. Fantastic service! This place just never misses. I went back again for lunch and I like how quickly we are able to get our food. This time I tried the lamb balls again but with a coconut sauce. The sauce wasn't as spicy as I'd like but it was still very good. The lamb itself has a lot of flavor. I tired it with the lemon noodles, and think that I'd of enjoyed the rice better. The salad that comes with it was good as well. I also asked for the mushroom saag and it had such a nice flavor. Some of the best saag I have tried in a long time. Have been to the Bindaas in Clevelandpark many times but this is the first time trying out this location. This is a fast-casual version, with seating but no waiter service. Compared to similar fast casual places in the same area, the availability of seating is a definite plus (and on this occasion is the reason we decided to have lunch here as our first choice turned out to not have any seating). It's not a big place but there are two small counters by the front window, a small group size high table in the middle and row of four two-tops each along both sides. Ordering is simple and fast - there are a few set bowl choices or you can build your own. We got the salmon, lamb and Paneer bowls plus some extras. The salmon bowl comes with noodles which I didn't realize or would have swapped it for some kind of rice. but all are very tasty, although the food is not as hot (as in warm) as I expected. Not the same as the full service Bindaas since the menu is more limited but quite adequate as a fast casual place. Pricing is comparable to similar restaurants in the area. read more

Rasika and Vonda's have the same hospitality group so you know going in that it's going to be great Indian food. It's like a street food version of Indian food. It's served chipotle style where you can pick from sides and greens and proteins, as well as sauces. The food comes freshly made, with burgers and rolls as well. The burgers are so good and the bread on the burger was the best part of the meal by far, which is so weird to say. This restaurant is in the same chain as Rasika and Bindaas (as you could guess from the name) so I had high expectations. I particularly love the chicken tikka masala at those two restaurants, so I had high hopes for the chicken tikka masala here. You choose a base (rice, noodles, etc.), sauce and protein, and it then comes with a salad. You can then add a side (chickpeas or saag paneer when we were there) for an additional $2. With the side, it ends up around $16 with tax but before tip, which is definitely on the pricer side of fast casual. But its still way cheaper than going to Rasika or Bindaas. The chicken tikka masala ended up being pretty good. Maybe it was because it wasn't made to order, but it didn't quite taste exactly like the Rasika CTM (but who knows, I could be imagining things). The rice was tasty, as was the saag. We also got an order of samosas and they were pretty good, better than the ones from our neighborhood Indian food place. I think this place is aiming to be a competitor to RASA, but they are slightly different. RASA is more similar to chipotle (to be clear, I love RASA), and this is more, I dunno, upscale? Either way, highly recommend it, particularly if you like Rasika/Bindaas. read more

Ragz and I stopped by for a late lunch today. Shared the chicken tikka Kathi roll and the burger/ vada pao. The vada pao was actually pretty yummy. It's not a real vada pao - it's a burger bun with gun powder masala. But the burger patty was delicious - could have been a tiny bit crispier. That gunpowder masala was legit though, and we both loved it. The Kathi roll was a great concept, just poorly executed. A tortilla instead of a traditional roti/ parantha made the whole things bulky to eat. The filling was too saucy, causing everything to be really soggy. The entire thing was filled with clunky spinach and what seemed like bokchoy. There was no chicken to be found, I think there was some ground up into the sauce, but gosh - such a disappointment. The place itself was clean, service was quick and the ambience was nice - spacious but not sterile. The music was a mix of Bollywood and American pop. Will I be back? Great lunch spot with casual Indian-American fusion concept. There are a variety of bowls to choose from on the menu or you can concoct your own creation. The food has a bit of a spicy kick but not overpowering with spices or too much heat to handle! I've thoroughly explored the menu over the course of 4 visits, here are my faves - Quinoa Korma Paneer Kofta Balls, Paneer and Red Pepper Kathi Roll, Veggie Burger Wada Pao, and crispy Samosas! I've tried different combinations of the grain bases and the Curried Quinoa is hands-down the best and most flavorful followed by the Basmati Saffron Rice. The Coconut Brown rice was a bit dry and while the Lemon Rice Noodles looked promising, they were brittle and over cooked. You can always ask for 1/2 serving and get 2 different bases! While it's not featured on the menu, you can get Roti for $2. The tender veggie Paneer Sweet Potato and Spinach Kofta Balls are bursting with flavor! They have a bit of spicy kick and pair well with the Korma and Quinoa. There are lots of hearty meaty protein options as well. It would be nice to see Paneer as a protein option. The savory creamy Korma curry is mild and has a nice nutty cashew and cardamom flavor. There's spicier and heartier curries with a red tomato base to choose from as well - Tikki Masala, Vindaloo, and Moilee, It would be nice to see a creamy Palak spinach curry on the menu. There is never enough curry to soak up all the quinoa or rice. Ask for an extra scoop of curry! The sides change up daily. The sides of creamy Palak Mushroom and the Palak Corn side are delicious and flavorful, but very spicy! I wasn't a big fan of the super spicy red chick pea curry. You can get 1/2 serving of the sides as well so you can try both for only $2. While I'm not typically a fan of hot grab and go pre-packaged food, both the Paneer and Red Pepper Kathi Roll and the Veggie Burger Wada Pao were surprisingly very tasty and flavorful! Of the 2, the Paneer and Red Pepper Kathi Roll was my pick! The Kathi roll is a thin moist Roti like tortilla filled with a stew of paneer, red peppers, and other veggies. It wasn't dry and surprisingly not messy to eat and quite filling. It's very similar to the Roti rolls in the Caribbean, but 1/2 the size and much easier to conquer! Veggie Burger Wada Pao was also quite tasty and made up of potatoes, sweet potato, and a heap of other veggies with mint cilantro chutney and had a spicy kick! The petite burger is quite small and wish it was bigger and came with a side of fries or a salad. The meal felt incomplete as I was still a bit hungry after devouring the burger. Don't mess out on the crispy samosas! The petite Samosas are very tasty with potato and pea filling with a mild spicy kick. The sweet brown chutney and cilantro green chutney pair well with the samosas. The fresh Watermelon Mint juice was refreshing! Wish the chunks of mint were much smaller and finer and kept getting stuck in my straw. They also have Mango Lassi, will have to try that on a hot summer day! What a great lunch spot! I was looking for something filling and delicious and I found it right here. They use the "Chipotle model" of dining. You can build your own creation or go with something they've already curated. I had the chicken tikka and it was delectable! I got the salad on the side and everything was absolutely perfect.
